I'm thinking of diversifying my portfolio with a mix of less volatile assets like dividend ETFs and maybe allocating a portion to bonds for stability. The point about having a plan and rebalancing as I get closer to retirement age resonated with me

Your caution is valid. when health challenges hit me at 53, I realized my savings wouldn't last. with only a fraction of my $3 million goal. I turned to investing. Now, 3 years later, I've amassed $2 million, nearing my target. early retirement has risks but strategic planning pays off

Rising prices have affected my intention of retiring at 62, working part-time, and building my savings. I'm worried about whether individuals who weathered the 2008 financial crisis found it less challenging than my current situation. The stock market's volatility, coupled with a reduced income, is making me anxious about having enough for retirement.

40 now, and everything is paid for. Fortunately, I had a college economics teacher who taught me a lesson when I was 18 years old. That lesson was: you can't buy something else for every purchase you make. Having multiple sources of income is prudent, as is living within your means. I have a 13-year-old vehicle because it is all I need, I like it, and I can do whatever I want with it. My net worth is $900k, and I can pay my bills without stress, but I don't live like I have that. I have no complaints.

To be honest, the financial advisor's role can only be ignored, not dismissed. Therefore do your research to get a reputable one and that should be any individuals main route into the market.

Thank-you for a very informative presentation. I've always looked at margin of safety in relation to a company's valuation, but this interpretation is very useful. I'm grateful to my younger self for making consistent contributions to index funds in a 401. I had plenty of capital to deploy in to cash-flowing assets when I rolled it over to an IRA after retirement. Your comment about adjusting allocations at different stages of life is relevant and important. I hope those working toward retirement gain the knowledge to prepare a plan for their futures.

I agree and wish more UA-camrs would talk about cash-flowing residential real estate in the investing mix. To be fair, real estate is NOT one thing. Different types and locations are totally different. In more rural areas, the property value doesn't increase alot, but the rents are normally much more stable. You don't see the wild fluctuations. Even in rural areas, annual increases in prices and rents goes up 3-6% per year. That's pretty stable.

For me the margin of safety category is better thought of in terms of time than %. As I am likely 2-3 year’s from retirement I have been starting to build cash in high yield and some bonds segment of my portfolio. I want to have 5-7 years of safety to ride out any market crash. When I was younger there was no need for that time buffer. 6mo to a year was plenty of safety when you have a paycheck.

When the FED sayes inflation is to high SCHD and QQQM are going ot DROP , so sell them BEFORE the FED raises rates and put them in a monye market which will soon be paying 5%. Typicall VOO and FAANG arent effect by FED raet hikes. Whne teh FED raises retes they do so to force INFLATION back down to 2% , so people stop buying things and companies dont make their 1/4ly numbers so people sell the stocks and thye drop further in vlaue. The FED is causing MOST of the problems responding to evil inflation. Whne the fed rasies rates growth and dividnd stocks always drop but the int rates banks pay goes up. NVIDA has defied FED rate hikes (cuz they dont have debt they are what was called a FAANG stock now called The magnificent 7 that domnt have DEBT and dont resond to fed moves, which is why you can pretty muhc just leave your monye in VOO regardless what the FED does ) also they just beat their numbers whne most other comanies dont due to FED rate hikes and people selling and shorters shorting. So VOO and the magnificent 7 can pretty much be left alone whne teh FED says inflation is to high. CONCLUSION: Socks that have DEBT SCHD/QQQM are going to drop in value whne the FED says inflation needs to be lowered down to 2% so they raise rates whcihs casues people to sell and shoirt sell and they go down in vlaue , then becaue peole have stoped buying thye drop further whne thgey dont mnake their 1/4/y numbers, now everyo ne is in money markets paying 5% wating for teh FED to be done lowering rates and 3 months after they are don loweing rates every oine will go back into SCHD/QQQM whcih will go up again as inflation rises and bank raets drop to nothing casuing CDs MMs etc to pay very little. If you invest and inflation is rising your stocks are going up but bakns arent paying anything so inflation is yoru friend unfortaunitly your retired parents and gransd parents SAFE invetsments bonds/cds arent paying enough to buy meds bread and gas so for them inflaion is VERY BAD. VOO and the magnificent 7 levels the paling field for every one ! If all you ever did was buy VOO, set up automatic bank payments for every month and went into a coma whne you woke up you would be rich!

The return on dividends on BND is okay but the growth is not good. It looks like, on July 1, 2020, the value of the ETF was $89.46. Today, it's $72.17. Even back on May 1, 2008, it was $78.12. Why after 16 years, the value of the ETF is lower? This is a concern to me, especially if I were to invest a portion of my retirement savings in it.

I think when i get ready to retire i am selling most my 403b into the bond etr but then keep my SCHD to get two sources of dividen passive income but then theres a little geowth on the SCHD as a general ETF. The vanguard bond ETF with a 4 % growth might be safe but no room for growth unless you can survive alone off the dividen!

I’m a noob so forgive the basic question. I am currently investing in a 3-Fund Portfolio (VOO, VGT, SCHD) in my taxable account. When I near retirement if I want to switch those to safer options like BND, is there a way to do that without creating a taxable event?

    • @aaronhellem5413

I think it might be possible to convert to a Roth IRA, because any of the dollars contributed at this point are already taxed. Once in a Roth, any capital gains and dividends are not taxed, either in trading within the fund (i.e., selling growth to invest in bonds) or when you start to take withdrawals. The caveat, I believe (this is only from my personal experience and research and is not meant to be financial advice: I repeat, I’m just a regular schmuck and not a financial advisor!) is you must hold the Roth for five years prior to taking any withdrawals, which you can start doing at 59 and 1/2. I’ve never done a Roth conversion from a taxable brokerage, so I’m not even sure if it’s possible, but may be worth looking into.

    • @janshuster1426
      @janshuster1426 4 місяці тому

If it is in a retirement account, any trading is not a taxable event.
Roth is NEVER taxed, 401k / traditional IRA is taxed when you take it out to spend.

Genuine question here if anyone has the answer.
BND is down like 20% over the last 4 years and is at an all time low. Seems it usually trades between like $80-85? Isn’t the purpose of bonds to avoid that exact kind of loss in capital? Or is this an anomaly? Why would you want to invest in BND?

Prof - Now that I know about your rooster, I have one question about your portfolio.
I buy the rationale (for now) on international. However, in line with your discussion about pursuing a lower standard deviation, I would have expected you to add some other investments with lower correlation to the equity markets to lower the standard deviation of your portfolio.
I do this with real estate (both direct investment in rentals and REITs), and a tiny bit of gold and art. You’ve reminded me to check on other possibilities like small cap, etc. as I will be transferring $$$ from my 401k soon.
Wouldn’t RE be a positive add to your model portfolio?
    🙏

I am trying to keep diversification in mind, but when I look at the correlation between SCHD, VOO, and VGT they are very correlated - rising and falling in the same stock market ocean. Because of this it goes into convulsive spasms fighting to grow any way it can out of desperation. Tricks, gimmicks, rule changes try to stimulate the economy and prevent it from falling but they only bring temporary relief to people since, when you factor in inflation we are declining.
