Regarding taxi and them costing an arm and a leg ! I can understand that being an American you are not used to public transportation but Budapest has a very good public transportation system Cheap ,goes everywhere and very effective! No need for taxis 😊
Agreed! The public transportation is wonderful and it's such a fun/beautiful city to walk through as well :) Can't wait to get back! Thanks for watching!
Taxi does not cost an arm and leg. You're tourists, that's why they rip you off. But,you probably used an independent taxi. These people, like those waiting outside the airport, will rip you off and are specifically looking for tourists. I'm not a local, but I speak Hungarian. Makes a difference. Huge difference.

Talk about your experience. I found Budapest a cold, rude and hostile place. The Hungarians were very unpolished. The service was terrible and every human interaction was bad. On the other hand, Romanians were very welcoming and friendly. I am not even thinking about revisiting Budapest whilst I am positive for going back to Bucharest at some point. 🇬🇷🇷🇴
Visited Budapest this past summer. I wish I had seen your videos beforehand. It is an exceptional city. We enjoyed seeing all it had to offer. The Jewish Quarter is definitely a must experience. My favorite city though is Prague.
I spent 2 days in Budapest last week. We pretty much spent the entire time up on Castle Hill on the Buda side. It was definitely more our speed (Wife and I are 50 and daughter is19). We loved it, especially the evenings once the Viking Tour groups and other tourists left for the day. Next visit will focus on the Pest side. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this succinct overview of Budapest.I lived in Budapest and taught there during 2018-2019. I agree with much of your take-aways such as reasonable prices, etc. I would add that the transportation system is one of the best we've ever experienced anywhere, whether tram, train, subway or bus. Biking also is a great way to get around. I would disagree with your comment about smoking, however. We found that many natives smoke, so much so, that cigarette butts were everywhere. But if you're reading this, and haven't been to Budapest yet, IT'S A MUST SEE.
Thanks for sharing Stephen! It's such a great city and I'm jealous you got to live there for so long. You'd know better about the smoking than I would so I'll take your word for it :) Thanks for watching!

I just spent 2 weeks Budapest, and I have been coming forever, It's a great city to walk, I've walked from Buda castle to Hero's Square, not a big deal and a beautiful walk. the Metro and buses are fantastic, easy to use and very inexpensive, the 100E goes to the Airport with very few stops, so there is no need to use a taxi in Budapest.
Few if any US cities have a transportation system like Budapest and cheap and clean and safe. The newest metro is design excellence. It rivals the jubilee line in London only a fraction of the cost to build. You can travel from one of the main train stations to a new underground train station under the river to outer edge of the city in 15 min Trains run every 2 min - no drivers. 9 stations all great design - all different. I lived in prague and they have a great transportation system and had recently completed an extension of one of ther lines but nothing on the level of Budapest . You have 4 metro lines including the first in Europe. There tram lines - trolleys and trolly buses and many bus lines. Ferry boats zig zag up the river. Regular Schedules all change after 10pm with much less service that may be a big negative.

Hadn’t thought about the lack of public toilets but now that you mention it, I can totally see that! Never noticed anything particularly bad about the air quality but appreciate you sharing your perspective 😄
As for the taxis...the legal way is to have the meter on and pay what it shows at the end of the ride. The fare depends on the distance, how much it took to get you there, and how much you made the driver wait for you if it was ordered on the phone or the app. So in fact the "fix rate" cabs are the shady ones.
You have to see Szimpla Kert but I enjoy Csendes Létterem quite a bit. Very different feel and worth checking out. Essencia is a top tier restaurant and half the menu is traditional Hungarian (other half is Portuguese). Much cheaper to go at lunch. Hope this helps!
The tourist spots are all reachable by their transportation system there, no need to walk much. Just research before going to know the tram no. and stop to alight. Likewise, not all eat like you do. And it's a given if you stay in many establishments area, that it would be noisy.
Ok, it’s been 10 years since I was last there, I’m hoping mass tourism hasn’t ruined the city as it has with Prague etc. One of my favourite places that I’ve ever visited and I’ve travelled extensively over the past 20 years. Gorgeous city.

That taxi thing seems to be dealt with. All taxi’s have fixed rates and they are published on a plastified card in every cab. Not cheap, not too crazy either. But than again, I am from the Netherlands, where everything is expensive.
I suspect, the reason you spent so much money on food and that you haven't met many locals is, that you were all the time in the center, where obviousely food is more expensive, hence not many locals would afford. But this is the case with all capitals. I remember when I moved to London 20y ago, I had so many questions, and only after asking the 10-th person I got a reasonable answer Actually half of them said something like "me no speak inglish" lol.
I mean, it's not either taxis or walk, there's public transport, it's pretty good and inexpensive. The city may be spread out, but I don't see how Paris or London is different and Budapest is not a one-day program anyway.
Never apologize for providing insight! My experiences are limited so it's great to hear from locals who have had different experiences. Thanks for sharing!
Most people (especially the younger folks) speak English. I had no problems communicating with only English but it never hurts to learn a few key phrases of Hungarian (I’m in the Singapore airport right now brushing up on some of those Hungarian phrases - flight to Budapest leaves in a few hours). Highly recommend you visit even if you don’t have time to pick up any Hungarian. It’s an awesome place!

It's so funny because to me the city is SO quiet and NOT spread out at all, it's such a concentrated walkable city. Also for the smoking I feel like EVERYONE smokes including the women...Hungary has one of the highest rstes in lung cancer
I agree! I wasn’t necessarily looking for it - just noticed that most other cuisines were available but never stumbled across Mexican food. As usual, the local cuisine is the best! Thanks for watching :)

The “conservative” mayor you write about started his career in SzDSz, a liberal party. Then he became “conservative” as the prime minister who was originally a young communist, then liberal, then “conservative” and now the only “friend” of Putin in the civilized Europe. Budapest has always been a liberal city and I am proud of it.
@@attilahalmai4590 Orbán was a secretary of KISZ (Alliance of Young Communists) during his secondary education. This is a position you need to be elected by your fellow young communists. His fellow young communist trusted him and he was ready to have this position. He has declared that Putin is his friend, such as Erdogan, Bolsonaro, Salvini and other idiots. Budapest since 1990 has been a liberal city, Orbán could never occupy Budapest and now he punishes the city pumping out the money. Otherwise it’s ok.
@@gyorgynemeth543 In the 80's every youngster between the age of 14 and 18 was a KISZ member, there was no choice then. Orbán never declared Putin as his friend, just has normal relations with Russia. As you call many nations' prime ministers an "idiot" showes the narrow mind of todays leftists-liberals: when they have no thought, they try to humiliate the opponent. That's why Fidesz won the elections for the 5th time now (and 4th time in a row), because leftists has no idea, no talent and no plans about the future. Nothing to tell something positive to the nation. And far the best mayor of Budapest was the conservative Tarlós István. And anything that is built in Budapast is built by the Fidesz, but opposed by the leftists (Millenáris, Városliget, Magyar Zene Háza, Néprajzi Múzeum, sportlétesítmények. The 'hates' are sooo hard to find in awesome cities like Budapest! Some of them are moreso things that tourists would want to know/be aware of before. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :)
Budapest became popular 10 years ago, when the previous mayor cleaned it up. Many liberal people live in Budapest and this mayor was a conservative. He was therefore replaced for political reasons. Now we have a stupid, clueless mayor who doesn't do anything, just politicking, but also badly. That is why the development of Budapest stopped three years ago. Unfortunately, today's mayor is not interested in his task of making Budapest beautiful, clean and orderly. Maybe in two years they will replace it and choose a normal one. But unfortunately the liberals choose for political reasons.
I agree about the clueless mayor. He needs to spend a bit of money in getting rid of the litter, cigarette ends and rubbish in the streets outside of Belvaros. I noticed the city is a lot dirtier since he's been in charge.
@@annewoodcock5706 Unfortunately. He has 10 deputies and 51 advisers. They cost the city a lot, but they do nothing. We are waiting for the new election, but this unfortunate person may be elected again. For political reasons. There are many liberals.

Need to know about the less crowded places in europe..
Which places do you have in mind?
Really useful thank you
Glad to hear it!
That taxi thing seems to be dealt with. All taxi’s have fixed rates and they are published on a plastified card in every cab. Not cheap, not too crazy either. But than again, I am from the Netherlands, where everything is expensive.
Glad to hear that. What part of the Netherlands are you from? I'll be spending a couple months up there this summer
I suspect, the reason you spent so much money on food and that you haven't met many locals is, that you were all the time in the center, where obviousely food is more expensive, hence not many locals would afford. But this is the case with all capitals. I remember when I moved to London 20y ago, I had so many questions, and only after asking the 10-th person I got a reasonable answer
Actually half of them said something like "me no speak inglish" lol.
I wish you were right but I think it may have more to do with me eating out 3-5 times a day haha
Are toilets readily available in Budapest?
I never had issues with not being able to find one :)
I mean, it's not either taxis or walk, there's public transport, it's pretty good and inexpensive. The city may be spread out, but I don't see how Paris or London is different and Budapest is not a one-day program anyway.
Agreed!
What was better: Budapest or Prague?
Depends on what you're looking for cause both cities are great. I enjoyed Budapest a bit more but love Prague too
@@camdendavid I lived in Prague (10 & 8) for 17 months. (that is why I know how it is there: 🥶
I’m sorry to mention, but as a local i have only been scammed once so far and it was a Bolt driver…
Never apologize for providing insight! My experiences are limited so it's great to hear from locals who have had different experiences. Thanks for sharing!
Do people speak a lot of English in Budapest or do I need to learn their language before going there?? Thank you!! 👍👍
@@camdendavid thank you! Will definitely visit Hungary in the future just to experience everything you did. 🙂 also if you have the time, visit my country the Philippines and go to our beaches here. ⛱️ hehe take care!
And bring your lady.. 👍
@@mark_alvarez You can count on it!
It's high on Sarah's list!
Use the public transport 😉

Appreciate the kind words! Yes, we really enjoyed Prague. Such a beautiful city and easy to pass time walking the streets and taking it all in. I'll definitely check out your channel - sounds awesome! Cheers to you and your channel as well. Maybe one day we'll have to meet up on the road

Which city do you want to see next?
Ljubljana
I probably won't make it back there this year but here's my love and hate video for Ljubljana from a couple months back :) ua-cam.com/video/TmBOO111wcA/v-deo.html
Vienna!
Istanbul
Firenze. I have been there this summer, but it wasn't as great as I expected. I liked other Tuscanian cities much more, such as Siena, Vinci, and my personal favourite Lucca. But I would also like to hear others' opinion about Firenze
Thank you for speaking respectfully and you’re absolutely right! Unfortunately, Hungarians wouldn’t be so intelligent speaking about the U.S.
I appreciate your feedback and you taking the time to watch the video! I'll have a part 2 coming soon :)
It's so funny because to me the city is SO quiet and NOT spread out at all, it's such a concentrated walkable city. Also for the smoking I feel like EVERYONE smokes including the women...Hungary has one of the highest rstes in lung cancer
Love getting the different perspectives :)
“Night rate” 😅
Hate! Just try to be cool, man! And sorry, a great city, so why all those selfies? So much to show from here when visiting as a tourist!
Awesome city! I'll try to get more b-roll next time. Thanks for watching!
Um, why would you look for Mexican food when you're in Hungary. Makes little sense.
I agree! I wasn’t necessarily looking for it - just noticed that most other cuisines were available but never stumbled across Mexican food. As usual, the local cuisine is the best! Thanks for watching :)
As if June 2024 using Uber helps avoid taxi scams
I am recently learning Hungarian..
How are black people treated there..
What about racism..
Budapest felt like a melting pot of cultures BUT I'm as white as white gets so I'm sure that impacted my experience there. Joel TAMARA and Tia Taylor are both black travel creators and have made videos about their experiences in Budapest and a few other towns in Hungary. I'd recommend checking them out for better insight! Thanks for watching :)
Hi I'm from Hungary! Well, we had nothing contact with colonism in the past (only one country who had possibility even if didnt do it because of its not human) so black people are neutral because of dont have experience with them. We not hate them BUT we dont have guilty for them like for west...
If you stay kind and you dont want to say us how can we live you wont have nothing problem. :)
Ive been there for a month and never met a single racist person
@@harmatihajnalka281
This is 100% correct. My husband is Hungarian and I have been here three times. Many of them are happy to marry inter-culturally and as far as race, it is a neutral thing for them.
Omg I haven’t seen Mexican food really?
Do you really want to eat Mexican food in 🇭🇺🤦♂️
I’m with you! I’d much rather have the traditional stuff
He said it with an S.
Thanks for sharing!
Orbán was never a communist and he is not a friend of Putin and Budapest was not always a liberal city. Otherwise it's ok.
Karácsony is zero talent, big mouth). So I should be very silent instead.

Why should you take a taxi in any European city ?
Come on, get out of all those metal boxes and get some real interaction with the city and the people
Budapesh
Love it
Love it
I visited Budapest and wasn't impressed by the food , nothing to compare with Paris or even Brussels .
Sorry to hear that! They've got some great cuisine if you know where to look :)
Interesting perspective. I really enjoyed Budapest!
@@camdendavid I'm glad. I hope it will improve a lot, because now it is stagnant.
The young people in Budapest will vote for liberal again most likely, but hopefully not. Really hoping for a conservative one next.
Nah bro your trippin

Huh? Not many smokers? Seems like every other person smokes in Hungary.
I was surprised by the lack of smoking! It felt like there was less smoking in public spaces compared to other European cities
@@camdendavid The smoking in indoor public places was forbidden about 10 years ago, and also in some outdoor public places like entrances of malls etc. It is such a relief for us, non-smokers.
@@eszterhassay4525 Thanks for the insight! Happy to hear the changes have made a positive impact
I’m not sure how it compares to other European countries, but the inhalation of secondhand smoke is constant. It appears about half the population smokes
This is a lie! Every food is Hungarian there!
Haha are you saying that every food is Hungarian because we're in Hungary? Or are you saying there's only Hungarian cuisine? I found tons of other types of cuisine and loved the food :)
@@camdendavid of course you will find numberless restaurants from Chinese Greek, Italian and so forth. Hungarian Food is not restaurants! Hungarian Food is what you find in the market! I feel racism is prevalent in Hungary. Also, I find people have a very stern attitude, especially the service workers - servers, shopkeepers, etc. I experienced this because I visited Budapest for 5 days and come from an East Asian background.
Appreciate you sharing your experience!
So you generalise on the basis of a 5 day visit? Nonsense. Budapest has a booming population from Asia as it happens.
You may feel that everywhere then. My husband is Hungarian and I’ve been here three times and know hundreds of them. Hungarians are known for marrying people of other cultures.
Hospitality sucks and owners are racist and rude! Never back again!
