I apologize to some of you who requested or asked if I could make some more videos like this. I love bringing to light moments, or stories that don't get heard or seen even though they should. Its 2020 and this year has been extraordinarily tough at our home. I promise I will make more. If you have suggestions don't hesitate. Also, if you have images and favorite audio you wish to be put together for a keepsake of a family member that may not be with you anymore, I might be able to help. Lost my Uncle who fought in Vietnam to 5 cancers from Agent Orange just a few months ago. My father diagnosed with prostate cancer and there is a bit more, but I want to create a channel where it can be a learning place and giving place. I have had some mental health issues flare up this year as i am sure some of you have had as well. In times like these i rely on good music, food(sometimes too much) and words of wisdom. My grandmother turned me onto Mahalia Jackson. My grandmother was born in 1915 to a German and British woman and her father, a German and Danish man. My grandmother graduated from Stephen's College in 1935 with a degree in Phys. Ed. Quite the thing for a woman in those days. She was 20. She lost her mother when she was around 12 and her father was too busy running a business to help. She grew up on her own, but apparently they had some live in family help from The Smiths. They were a black family that knew her grandfather. This was in Kenosha, Wisconsin. About as sour cream white as you could get. And yet, the Smith family introduced gospel and blues to my grandmother, and in turn I appreciate it to this day. When we are low, or down and out we can always turn to good music, dance, and words of wisdom. My grandmother used to tell me, "Sometimes, you have to toot your own horn." and she was and is right. She passed away in August of 2011. She was just shy of 96th birthday, so we gave it to her. She earned it. At her wake, I had rehearsed a song she sang to my wife and I at our wedding reception. She had terrible arthritis and hunched over but from her singing days with the Sweet Adeline's she belted out in her baritone(yes baritone) voice, Irving Berlin's "Always". I sang that at her wake to give it back to her, and I have not sang it since. If any of you read this lengthy comment, i hope you understand how special you all are and how loved we all should be. My grandmother taught me integrity, grace, spunk, courage and humor, all without telling me how. She lived it.
I read this😀. Thanks for sharing both this video and your Thoughts. I love Mahalia Jackson more than I even knew. I'm not even a huge gospel music fan, but "old rugged cross" was the number one song I played on iTunes. I had no clue I was even listening that much. I just love that song and how she sings it. I live in Chicago and I plan on driving by her old house here. Thanks again for this post!
" that's the height of disrespect " ..Not to let hate get into my heart 🤗... What a beautiful, intelligent woman 🥰 we soo need her today 2019 /20! 💖🙏🏽💖
Totally love Mahalia Jackson. Named my first daughter after her. What people.... black people had gone through in those days and still is; so sad. God bless your souls Mahalia. We will always love and appreciate you.
What a beautiful interview! It inspired me. I will listen again and again. I love and always have LOVED Mahalia since childhood. Truly a great woman!!!
Such a depth of wisdom!!! A true Mother in Zion!!!! Queen of Spirituals, Hymns, & Gospel. I don't care who they give that title to after she passed away!!! She will always be the Queen. I love Albertina, Shirley Caesar, ward singers are electrifying, but none can match the Power of Mahalia!!!
"I don't wanna hate, I want to love." She knew what bitterness and resentment could bring people to do and didn't allow that to overcome her. She spoke out against wrong while promoting what is right. I wish more of my people would take those traits because until then we will always be in bondage of hate.
Well stated. I think we all could learn by listening to James Baldwin, Mahalia Jackson and the like. From another time but their voices are so relevant now.
Thank you for posting this wonderful interview with the mighty Mahalia Jackson. A joy to hear her speak so eloquently about racial equality. So sad to reflect that her words are still as relevant now as ever they were. God bless Mahalia! ❤️
I am glad everyone has enjoyed this video for over a year. My grandmother loved her singing. Sad to say I have been unable to make more like it due to a.medical condition. I am not sure how to say this but I need some help yall. If anyone knows someone who gives loans let me know. Our credit is no where near what it should be and we are close to being evicted. Sorry to throw this out there but maybe someone in the 13 thousand folks might be able to help. 2 weeks later I can pay back. The timing is all off. Have a great night!
Wow I really see how much there is a need for these types of videos! As you can tell, I do not make videos often. If I were to, who would you love to hear and possibly see next?
Miss Mahalia Jackson , Expresses herself well and speaks Eloquently. If I dare to say as well as those people . Who purchased their degrees and I must say. That a majority of people from the so called mainstream or White People. Should be singing the song “How I Got Over. “
When MLK was in Chicago preparing a protest march, he asked Mahalia how much she would charge to sing at the march. Mahalia: "I don't charge the walkin' people."
Very powerful!!! and thought provoking interview with the Queen of african american gospel Mother Mahalia Jackson. Unfortunately Mother Mahalia Jackson there is still that spirit of racism in the united states of america. You can't change anyone with a racist heart and spirit only God can. I will rebuke any racist spirited person in the name of JESUS CHRIST. Jesus Christ died for all races of people. There is no such thing as a superior race. The God I serve is superior all mankind.
It's a deep shame for anyone to be refused service but the idea of someone refusing service to Mahalia Jackson. The fact they wouldn't throw down their coat to keep her from walking through a puddle let alone refusing to serve a sandwich to Mahalia Jackson. That is... that gets me. Hard.
She knew not to be moved to hatred, she understood the wrong in her time and called it out but knew to pray not to become, her self, hateful. I don't see that as much in my community as I'd like to.
It doesn't pay to hate Jonathan. I know it is hard not to resent those who have wronged you. But l pray everyday that l will be filled with love for everyone.
That wrong is still around today. You have to hate the wrong done to you and correct wrong behavior. If you accept the hate America has given for four hundred years. That means you have just become docile. Thus you will be dealing with this hate that America just keeps on giving for another four hundred.
@@lisablack124 If you allow hate to enter your heart, you can be manipulated to do evil and you become no better than those who wrong you. When you love you react with logic and God will show you the appropriate way to solve the problem. Don't let your emotions deceive you.
Jonathan Hazley I do not no what community you live in but Miss Mahalia, was talking about the hate that Whites have practiced now for over four Hundred years against Americans Descendants of Slavery @ADOS. No other people in America except Black people allow themselves to continually to be mistreated . This could be due to an inferiority complex. . Why should Black people accept being bottom caste. Especially since the enslaved Americans made America Great. And ADOS people have gone without Reparations. While America gave The Japanese Reparations . Also Obama gave the Jewz Reparations for something that occurred in Germany. I was always taught you give love to those who are capable of loving you back. Also the slave owner was given reparations for the lost of his slaves. The descendants of the slave owner continued for generations to receive the same compensation. What kind of love are you seeking or do you just want approval from those who care not to want to love you back.
Back in the 50s, Mahalia was a "hot property." CBS gave her her own radio show & she hired Studs as the mc. A CBS toady comes by. "Mister Terkel, you have to sign this." - a loyalty oath. Studs: "No, I don't sign those things." "Oh, but you must, you must." Mahalia comes by. "What's that, baby." Studs: "Oh, you know." Mahalia: "You gonna sign?" Mahalia knows damn well Studs isn't going to sign any loyalty oath. Studs: "Nah." "Ok, let's rehearse." The CBS toady: "Oh, but if he doesn't sign, he can't be on the show." Mahalia: "Well, if Studs isn't on the show then you're going to have to find yourself another Mahalia Jackson." Studs, in telling the story - "The CBS toady went away and didn't come back. ... Mahalia Jackson had in her little finger more guts, more integrity than (CBS president) William Paley and all his minions." Moral: Sometimes you just have to say "No. ... Here I stand, no."
I think I like Mahalia's music best. Without the black contribution of blues, gospel,r&b,jazz, this world would be a different place. I can't even imagine what music would sound like.
