I am a recovered Heroin Addict. Clean for 13 years. Enabling an addict in any way is what keeps us from stopping. I had to hit rock bottom. Lose everything and everyone. No money for drugs and it wasn’t easily accessible. Once you hit a point like I was in. I had no choice but to seek help and start rebuilding my life. In no way is enabling drug use doing anything but keeping them on it. 90% of People with my addiction end up in jail or 6ft under.
Ignoring survivorship bias though. You realize that providing support to criminals is counterproductive. The goal of criminalizing anything is to create fear/stigma and to put up barriers to help/treatment.
Yup. Harm reduction does make sense though. Unlaced weaker substances, shouldn't be as much of a main concern as rehabilitation and acces to it, mental health, prosecution of those who are commiting crimes like selling fentanyl. You shouldn't be able to do drugs in the street ,Portugal actually has a good system for it.
Pretty sure that’s the entire reason they allow it. The government hates you and wants you dead. But until that day they will use you to further their sick agenda.
I run an SRO in Vancouver on Granville street. I got brought in here to clean it up after a machete incident. I have been here for about 2.5 years and it's finally gotten to where it should be. I have the safest, cleanest, and quietest SRO in Vancouver and it's all because I don't believe in Harm Reduction as it is right now. I believe that everyone has a right to a safe environment to live in and I won't budge on NOT renting to heavy addicts. If I think it's going to be a problem then it's not going to be here. Solution: Consequences for actions: Hold people accountable for what they do... STOB ENABLING NEGATIVE BEHAVIOR: no where in history has enabling EVER helped anyone.
That guy that had $65 and "just needed $5 more" will always be $5 short when he talks to someone. You feel like a hero for helping him get the right amount he needs, but you just were lied to.

I hope things turn around for him..

If people had a more positive mind set to always help one another And not be so caught up in their egos it would probably be easier for people to better them selfs
Tbh I feel so unsafe as someone who is living in vancouver, the number of times I see someone attacking people or holding a knife in public spaces is insane
No, he's not... he's spreading misinformation and straight up lies... you guys are just way too dense to do your own research.... we as a society are cooked if brains develop the way yours has..
This one hit close to home. My dad left due to drugs when I was 5 and his brother randomly found him begging on the streets in Vancouver many years later. He is clean and sober now, and has a family, and we have reconnected. It just really goes to show that only people who truly want the help/support will take it.
My bio dad ODd on H. The last time I spoke to him, I was 8 and told him not to speak to me unless he was sober. Hadn't spoken to him for 15 years. I'm super glad your dad got out of the hole. Now it's our turn to stay out of it!
Legalizing drugs is a political, passive way to tell addicts, "You're on your own, but we'll profit from your internal demons & vices throughout your struggles"
Except drugs have not been legalized at all. You cannot sell meth, cocaine, heroin, or anything else at all in Vancouver-or at least you can’t in a way that it would be taxed. The city is not making profit off of selling drugs; safe injection sites are free to use. I just want to warn others about this guy turtlechad btw; he’s a horrible person. I’ve seen him comment under white-supremacist “scientific-racism” videos saying some of the most deplorable things imaginable. Do not take anything he says at face value.
I live in a town near Vancouver. Hardly been downtown. Been down there twice. Second time saw a guy screaming that he'd kill everyone there. I prefer to stay away.
As someone from Canada, I respect and appreciate your research and hard work Tyler, please keep saying the things that need to be said and giving people voices that need to be heard.
Getting arrested for drugs and the possibility of going to prison due to drug use.... made me clean up and change my life.... 8+ years clean and sober.... Id probably be long dead if i never got in trouble for it.
THANK YOU for posting this! I advocate for this on X and UA-cam comments because my brother has been an addict for 20 years and the only 3 times he's been clean is every time he's come of a decent stint in jail, every rehab and halfway house he left to keep using. People think it's inhumane but you honestly might save some people's lives such as yourself.
Wow. You are a self loathing idiot. It took someone else to punish you for your bad habit to make you stop doing it? You're literally like a child who's scared of getting grounded.
Exactly. Stigma to me, is another word for shame. Bring shame back because this isn't the answer. Being an addict is NOT a disease. Whatever doctor said that should be slapped because it takes away all accountability to the addict. Why does an addict steal, and screw their family and friends, if it's a disease it's not their fault. If they get clean and relapse, its not their fault. That's ridiculous.
You should do a video in Kamloops, BC which has the highest crime rate per capita in all of Canada. The drug problem is crazy bad for such a small town.
It’s just sad… I’m from Alberta (Canada) and we lost my father in law about a year and a half ago to OD. These videos can be a hard watch sometimes. But I appreciate how raw and real they are and how kind you are to the people you speak to. My father in law died surrounded by naproxen kits that were useless, the fentanyl he was given was laced with something else that made it pretty much a guaranteed death :( he was so proud to be a grandpa and was always making us and our kids little trinkets and things to show us love. I could go on and on but I won’t clog up the comments 😅 we love and miss him very much though. And I know he hangs out with us. Im a stay at home mom and feel him with me a lot. Fun fact about him: He’s from the Vancouver area and He waterskied to the hospital the day my partner was born 😂
Omg that’s tough I’m sorry u went through that as a fellow Albertan the drugs here are insane at least in my area the amount of meth and cocaine is ridiculous
Walked down East hasting at 18, offered crack, pills, fent, stolen food everywhere. So compassionate. Meanwhile, here in Japan there are no drugs, the streets are clean and safe, and my children walk to school alone and also take the bus downtown without any parental supervision to hang out at the mall with their young friends. Enjoy your compassion, Vancouver!
You dont see them because the government in japan pushes all the homeless out of the cities to the outskirts or forests. So that people think japan is this perfect utopian society
Don't worry because soon Japan will be flooded with european style cultural enrichment and not even you are going to feel safe in your own neighborhood day or night all year long for probably ever❤
The depth of all these people is astounding. To see them speak so eloquently about their experience and in addition their opinions being so mature and educated. It adds a whole new level of visceral emotion. I wish I could hug each and every one of them. With proper steps put in place for access to rehab and recovery the method is possible. Look at other European countries that have done the same. It’s so sad that when we as a country attempt to make a change it’s half winded and ends up causing more harm. These people know why they use, they also know that based on their options it’s sometimes the only choice. My heart breaks for all of the vulnerable people that want to get clean and do better but may never have that chance or opportunity. As a Canadian I hope that in the coming years we can be proud of our contribution to bettering the lives of each and everyone one of these people.
I have lived and worked in close proximity to the downtown eastside for just over 15 years and my heart breaks every day. I see needles all over the place, I can’t reconcile the juxtaposition of a booming tourist trade with rampant drug use, the fear that this brings when it is now in your neighborhood and the ever present desire to help, and not knowing how. I have children and due to many reasons, one being the ridiculous cost of housing, moving is not an option. I hear sirens everyday, ambulances, police, hospitals are all over run and it is a huge wait if you need urgent care because, of course, and I would not have it any other way, every life is worth saving. Harm reduction is one piece of a larger puzzle and that puzzle has been abandoned. Saving a life needs to include giving people the opportunity to live a life they want to live.❤ My son introduced me to your video. Thank you for taking the time to make it.
Tyler your interview with Dr. Julian Somers is incredible. I have a Masters of Economics, and have published research in housing policy. His understanding of incentives, social frameworks, and cause/effect is spot on. He is a very smart person, and his research is incredibly valuable at the moment. All of my prior literature and real world experience supports the idea of integration among safe/well run communities is what truly helps people. Please help him get a platform at all possible. If his data is correct, it might be one of the most important social studies of our time.
As he said tho, he was ordered to destroy the evidence because the government had committed all their money into this crap plan. Ultimately, it’s never going to get better, the government will continue to waste our tax money on these people because they can’t begin to admit they have failed. All these people saying they want help here and there will never get it because of how easily they can get drugs. Vancouver will continue to get worse, and the homeless drug epidemic will continue to spread until our government can come to their senses.
Rehab saved my life. I was an IV meth user and a horrible alcoholic. That one guy is right, you have to be ready for change. Rehab is a lot like that mouse experiment. You’re surrounded by dozens of other people who were also ready for change. Honestly rehab was a really great experience for me and it helped save my life. 2 years clean and sober, working full time, living in a nice little 2bdr apt with my also sober girlfriend whom I met in rehab. We’re both living completely different lives than we were a couple years ago. We do change we do recover. God I pray you please help that woman in the chair who wants to get married. I cried like a baby watching that. Obviously I pray everyone else gets help too. This is so heartbreaking. Thanks for spreading awareness Tyler!
I tried meth once and I was so fucked up I crushed up the ice and sniffed it just see what it was about theres not much of if it in CT I was tweaking all day
As someone from Vancouver, thanks for making this! I've been by these areas a few times and it's interesting to hear from the people who live on these streets

I'm a social worker from Frankfurt, Germany and we've had a drug problem since the 80s that you don't find anywhere else in Germany. Frankfurt has five places where you can use safely and there are lots of other support options, such as a school where users can catch up on their school-leaving qualifications or experience regular everyday life with volunteers. The situation has steadily improved; even if Frankfurt is still associated with drugs and the main train station is notorious throughout Germany, it is no comparison to the 80s.
@@thisisforonecomment In 1994, the first facility was opened where safe consumption is permitted. The whole thing is called the Frankfurt Way and is divided into four areas: prevention, counseling and therapy, harm reduction and repression. As I said, Frankfurt is still known for its drug scene, but also because these images from the 80s still exist in people's minds. I would still avoid the main station as a tourist.

I applied for a job in the harm reduction field in the downtown east side of Vancouver and was denied employment because when interviewed I conveyed my intention to help people overcome their addiction and regain their health and sobriety. The woman interviewing me said that most if not all of these people are too far gone to change and that this system simply allows them to live a little longer but trying to help others become sober and free of the lifestyle is counterintuitive to the SRO's and harm reduction model which is in place. Good times. These woke lefties want to maintain their funding to slow kill their brothers and sisters because it's their livelihood, never mind actually helping people.
Tyler, you may have really saved that nice lady's life. That is so cool man. I am 16 months sober from fentynal myself and I hope that women can be able to say that some day soon.

I used to visit Vancouver a lot for work and thought it was always nice back before 2016. Went again last year and was shocked how bad it has gotten. And thats from someone who lives in SF.
Yes, our city has changed in 10 years. Bulk of immigration over the past ten years too had changed the city so much. Not such a nice city anymore, crowded, criminals gangs from China, India, Mexico. Sad...
As a former addict, you always say you want to change, but nothing will actually change until you do...and you'll tell yourself this until you die or actually stop. Quitting whatever your addiction is is one of the hardest things to do. Life will never seem the same after you quit (as you've become accustomed to that feeling of living), but you'll be better off in the end for it.
😂😂😂 stop playing blame game. These type of addict exist everywhere, only difference is in western world they do publicly in side of street. Shit take, there was a stigma around people having issues with mental health leading to generation after generation not seeking help. I'm with you on drug use though, that's a choice.
Until it happens to you or your friends or family right? All stigma does is stop people looking for mental health help before it gets to this. And regarding your " stigma works" argument? Even when people are strong enough to get away from this, as soon as you go for medical help in a hospital for example, as soon as they see your history your often stigmatised by the staff. Treated terribly by " care" staff because you had a mental health crisis years ago. And it happens a lot. You also agree with that?
Stigma yes. Not having a stigma just basically means no shame. Every doper I've ever heard said they got addicted to escape reality or a fked up life. What a joke. You get high because it feels good and you wana party. I say this because I've been thru and done it all. Do some get on dope because they had a bad childhood or something, sure. But that's about as common as a fat person being fat being they have a thyroid issue and not because they eat like shxt. Bring back shame.

It's heartbreaking to see the guys that have been doing this for decades and still here. They are talking pretty normally, and they don't sound happy, but here they are. I appreciate you. Great video.
Could it be because we tried prohibition and incarceration for a century now, and it was a complete failure that ruined people's lives for no reason at all? What is the alternative? Continue the policies that have completely failed and left us with more drug use than ever before in history anyway?
At this point, legalisation is the only realistic solution. We've tried making drugs illegal, and that failed. We tried sending drug users to jail, that failed. We now have more global drug use than ever before and we've spent BILLIONS fighting this losing battle. If you don't want to legalise drugs, and considering that the current policies have totally failed, what are you suggesting that we do about the situation?
Go back to the middle east or whatever authoritarian shithole you are from where your overlords throw you in prison for everything. Citizens deserve autonomy and part of having freedom is the freedom to make your own choices good or bad. The government is to serve the public not throw people in prison for substances.
The fact that in a free society people should be able to do what ever they want with their bodies. In fact majority of the drug related deaths can be blamed on prohibition.
Unpopular opinion, but here goes: If it was fully legal, it would be sold by the government and TAXED, this is not the case. Instead they fucked up big time by not tackling the SUPPLY of the drugs. A lot of addicts would prefer to get actual heroin instead fent or even worse tranq. The government "could" facilitate this and at the same time wipe out the cartels and a lot of the crime that is associated with the drug use. But for some reason, they won't. What they're doing here is just idiotic and a goldmine for the cartels, get those addicts proper narcotics and they'll be able to get their shit together, let them rot on a dodgy supply and well, this is the result. That's just how I see it, I'm probably wrong, but until I've seen something convincing policy wise that actually works better then Switzerland, I'm going to keep that opinion.
@Leojw10shoplifting is effectively decriminalised now. The police never show up for hours so eventually the security have to let them go. However they are usually only caught after doing it multiple times and becoming a bit too confident. Oh and the police are 100% aware of every person in the town that does these things.

I remember as a kid back in the 80s, Ronald Reagan used to talk about fighting “the war on drugs“ and now look at it, you don’t hear anything about it and it’s 10 times worse than it was then, and much more dangerous.. it’s also crazy that if you see paper money on the street you could die from picking it up. I live in a small town in Alabama, you would never think fentanyl would make it here. My wife’s uncle bought some pills out of the hood and took one, he never woke up. Another kid at a high school eating a piece of candy,dead.. it’s horrible and a really good friend of mine, a couple months back, I got a phone call from my mom saying he had passed away and it was fentanyl..Something really needs to be done about it. They’re targeting everyone who has a few dollars. even our children, this is also why we need to control our borders..
This is the Tyler Oliveira style I fell in love with some years ago! This is raw, talented journalism, amazing editing and storytelling, and most of all, taking risks in conflict areas to tell a powerful story. Keep up the amazing work, Tyler! 👏👏👏 May I also remind you of the fact that our Native American population in our motherland, the Continent of America before the European Colonizers arrived, was around 15 millions, while the European population in their motherland, the Continent of Europe was around 25 millions. Today, Native American population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering TWO BILLION! A shockingly sad truth. 🙁 In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return to rightful owners Native American people. Notorious global cardinal crimes the Christian West has committed, and benefited a great deal, such as centuries-long global Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? 🤷

Love your content Ty, Been watching for some time I love how unbiased you are. And how you show the truth everyday people see and mainstream media doesn’t cover.
As a social worker against all these measures to allow people to use easily without consequences, i can tell you that those who are in favor of safe supply and making drugs use legal aren't in it to help people. They couldn't care less. They have a background in government institutions or other fields with no knowledge of how challenging living like this can be. They lack empathy and are only there to get as much funding from our governments as possible. I have colleagues and even managers who are exactly what I just mentioned. They simply do not care. Unfortunately, they tend to hold the positions of authority.
I lived in Vancouver and can confirm that this whole thing is normal.. if you go there you’ll see a bunch of homeless people and druggies.. it’s sad honestly. Along with this, weed and vape stores are EVERYWHERE.
I've lived in Vancouver my entire life and this has definitely gotten worse. My cousin is down there she has warrants out for her arrest. She's robbed everyone in her family multiple times aswell as other serious crimes, i hope she ends up doing time but every time she gets arrested she's released the next time. our justice system is a joke
My main concern is how to survive all of these financial and political crises, especially in light of the US political power scuffle. The government has really called things more difficult for its citizens, but l thank God that I'm favoured with $97,000 every 2 weeks! I can now give back to the locals in my community and also support God's work and the church without waiting for the government.God bless America.
When people say 'get clean,' it often comes with an unspoken question: 'Clean, but to live in what kind of life?' For many struggling with addiction, the prospect of sobriety isn't just about giving up substances; it's about facing a world that feels broken, harsh, and devoid of hope. If the alternative to the high is a life of misery, isolation, or continued struggle, then the choice to stay addicted might feel like the only way to escape the pain, even if only temporarily. The world has fallen hard for so many, and perhaps for some, the high becomes the only glimpse of peace or freedom they can find.

Same, 12 years but I had to quit cold turkey on my couch. I think the MAT programs in the US are pretty bad too.
The government requesting them to destroy their data is so strange. I never heard about anything like it.

10000%

I want to take a moment to genuinely thank Tyler and his team for all that they do. They don't just provide us with youtube content; they provide us with legitimate investigative journalism while doing their best to remain unbiased, and that's something that no longer exists within legacy media in the west. All legacy and main stream media and even some other youtubers are bought and paid for, and they only serve those that are putting money in their pockets rather than the people they are speaking to en masse.

And you lazy, brainwashed mfs don't do any research on anything and just believe some random guy on youtube..UA-cam... Who the hell ever in their right mind think that legalizing drugs is a good idea? A lot of these politicians shouldn't be voted in.
Nobody thinks its a good idea. Its all corruption.
Politicians get paid to make this happen. What they care about is money, not people after all.
Canada has fallen so far. Drug legalization is nefarious apathy to put it simply.
No evidence to support that legal drugs cause more drug use
So true! Maybe to wipe out drugs and to fix the whole mess, we should make drugs totally illegal. Oh wait, we tried that ..
How come it's working really well in Portugal then?

Its the same here in england uk. You got people high on drugs in bustling shopping streets and shoplifters everywhere police barely do much
@Leojw10shoplifting is effectively decriminalised now. The police never show up for hours so eventually the security have to let them go. However they are usually only caught after doing it multiple times and becoming a bit too confident. Oh and the police are 100% aware of every person in the town that does these things.
I live in Vancouver BC. Its actually horrible. The drug use and homelessness 😢 is crazy.
Go To Toronto and see how ridiculous it’s gotten there with both the homelessness and crime crisis going like crazy plus they can’t defend themselves in there own home.Personally I like the title “Inside The City Where It’s Illegal To Defend Yourself” since the mayor and chief said to leave ur items at the front door for the robbers instead of defending ur home and family
As an American I lost my mind when the Toronto police had a press conference telling people to leave their keys just inside their front door so home car jackings would be safer. Canada is so lost right now, it's sad cause there's tons of great people up there.

I really admire your growth in these videos, I noticed how you level yourself to the man and it’s something that seems so little but is so incredibly helpful in making people feel more comfortable and able to communicate, it’s a tactic used with children to calm them down and idk it’s the little things that matter so ❤ 9:41
I remember as a kid back in the 80s, Ronald Reagan used to talk about fighting “the war on drugs“ and now look at it, you don’t hear anything about it and it’s 10 times worse than it was then, and much more dangerous.. it’s also crazy that if you see paper money on the street you could die from picking it up.

May I also remind you of the fact that our Native American population in our motherland, the Continent of America before the European Colonizers arrived, was around 15 millions, while the European population in their motherland, the Continent of Europe was around 25 millions.

Love your content Ty,
Been watching for some time I love how unbiased you are.

I think the guy was lying. No way any real doctor would prescribe fent, its not a medication in any way and it literally rots away your flesh.
Not so hard to afford drugs when you prioritize them over housing and food and everything else
