  • In this video resident expert Nick Bigelow of Patchwerks shares a simple way to vocode in eurorack using Mutable Instruments Warps and Qu-Bit Chord V2.
What is vocoding: A vocoder is a category of voice codec that analyzes and synthesizes the human voice signal for audio data compression, multiplexing, voice encryption or voice transformation. The vocoder was invented in 1938 by Homer Dudley at Bell Labs as a means of synthesizing human speech. -Wikipedia

I knew this from the manual, but I have never heard it in action and it confirms you'll need a bit of polyphony for best results. Thanks for sharing!

Gotta love a module with a big glowing knob!

One tip, input drum loopns to second input and it will generate awesome rythmic pads.

The audio from the patch is very very quiet compared to the voice over. Hard to hear exactly what's happening without blasting Nick's VO. Great patch idea, Warps' vocoder is fantastic!

Very cool module! Once I get my case together I may swipe the Warps!

I don't know why there are not more vocoder modules, its my favourite to "mix"/vocode signals with warps.

Also, if you provide an envelope to the Level jack on Warps' input #2 that modulates the built in VCA on #2. You can mess with the vocoder output using a controller like Planar2 or TetraPad...or a knob. Some like knobs.
On a separate point, you can also just use Warps as a VCA, I discovered. Look at the block diagram that comes with the module.
I've been trying intermittently for months to get anything usable out of Warps 3 vocoder algorithms plus Parasite's vocoder. The brief notes in the Warps introduction in the box don't describe which jacks and knows perform which roles.
Warps was my first module. I got it before I had a rack. It just lay on the table next to my semi-modular box.

Too quiet to hear your patch. Modular Case volume was very low. 🎵🙉
