My Commandant. I had just learned how to properly salute and was walking across the parade deck when a lot of brass headed toward my direction. I kept going and gave my first actual salute. "That's a sharp salute, Marine." One of them said. As I walked further an officer strode back to me, and said "Recruit, you just received a compliment from General PX Kelly, Commandant of the United States Marine Corps." I responded with "Sir, that's my first actual salute." The Officer grinned and said the Commandant would be very pleased to hear that." I still love the Marine Corps.

I was a "Plank Owner" at the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force Headquarters, Special Operations Capable, MacDill AFB., Tampa, FL, (RDJTF HDQTRS, SPEOPS), precursor to SOCOM. I was a Lance Corporal, heard two Officers at Marine Corps HDQTRS talking about how they needed to find some Enlisted Marines to fill these Billets followed them into their office and volunteered. LTGEN P.X. Kelley was the CINC, USAF, MGEN Taylor, and USA, BGEN Steiner were the rest of the command staff. General Kelley was by any amount of measure, the best Officer I ever served for. He saved my butt literally from some things that should never have been handed me, and he promoted me twice. His autographed picture still hangs on our living room wall. I still have all the photos of him holding our oldest Son at my awards ceremony for Joint Service Member of the Quarter and Year awards. An Army Captain told my Wife and I; we should not have brought him to the awards ceremony, General Kelly said, " nonsense, I'm a grandfather and this is the next Generation of Marine" and carried him around and played with him for most of the ceremony. When he left to become Commandant, he told me, "SGT Seaton, if you ever need to speak with me, drop me a line", truly a compassionate Man and a stellar Marine Officer. Semper Fidelis, General.

He was our last Distinguished Speaker at the Army Command and General Staff College in 1985. My classmates came to me after the visit and said "Let's get rid of all the generals in the Army and give us a few Marines like General Kelley." I was proud a Marine. He was incredible as a Marine and our Commandant.

At the 26:00 minute timeframe, you see the Marine Body Bearers. What they do is awesome. The Marines use 6 men instead of 8. They also carry the casket at shoulder height the entire time. Lastly, they are the only service that raises the the entire casket above their heads. So no man stands higher than you, before they lay you to rest. These men are dedicated professionals.

I had met the General a number of times when I worked for Admiral James D. Watkins, CNO at the time, but it was a number of years later I saw him for the last time at Washington National Airport (Reagan). The General was waiting in line to check in for his flight, and it was the first time I saw him as a civilian citizen. We talked for a few minutes and he assured me he remembered me, but he met thousands of folks during his career. When I think of a Marine or meet a Marine, he's the yardstick I measure them against.
