My greatgrandma used to play the piano to these old movies at a cinema in the north of England 😊. There was no music for this, she'd just look at the screen and play whatever seemed right at the time
I can see that the actors there are saying something while shooting these silent films. You can see that they move their mouths, so they talk. I believe that it was easier for the actors to say sensible meaningful text than just to mimic with their mouths.
Shame there's no audio. Anybody know why that is? And don't say because it's old because I've seen an older movie with a soundtrack. Crazy story, though, definitely the most violent and terrifying movie ever made at that point. The same person who wrote Bluebeard also wrote Cinderella, both adapted by the Cinemagician himself!
This is a silent movie, my friend. Normally when these were shown, musicians would be present, playing the music live to match the screen and sometimes they had their own score. Nowadays, soundtracks are often added to these movies but not always. Out of interest, what older movie have you seen with a soundtrack?
Antoinette Tussuad No, that was the wrong wording. I didn't mean I have seen a soundtrack attached to the film but rather one put in to the video to match the film. I'm a bit silent movie fan but I don't much like listening to them with 100% no sound.
Ooh~ I suspected so but I wasn't sure! (^^;) Hehe, I'm sorry! I agree, it would be nice to hear a score put to this one. When watching these, I usually have Musica Antiqua (Spotify) playing in the background when watching these but it doesn't often match. Oh well, someday!
Antoinette Tussuad Right. It takes the right score to match the mood and flow. Some films aren't silent but don't use a score like many of the works of Luis Bunuel, I guess making epic film scores was always a more "American thing".
FenceDaGreat That's true! They do a bloody good job, too, but when it comes to the epic-battle-final-scene stuff, I find it wears a bit thin very quickly~ A lot of it is just so generic but when they get it right, it's breathtaking!
Good I am happy that they are dead because if everybody lived forever 1. The world would be overcrowded 2. Everybody would be starving because there wouldn’t be enough food to feed everybody And 3. Everybody would be in poverty

Another gem by Méliès. It's an outstandingly told story for the time.♥

Not just a tale of murder, ghosts, and revenge...but cannibalism too. They had cook soup with their feast!
the editing effects are very impressive
yes he was ahead of his time
If the odd way the actors move bother you, slow the speed down. It becomes easier to watch.

121 years passed, big chunk of time. Who is that young beauty at 4:25? I have not heard anything about her since then (1901). What is she doing now?
She's dead my man
