  • Peugeot 406 - Top Gear 1995
The Peugeot 406 is a large family car that was produced by French automaker Peugeot between 1995 and 2004. Available in saloon, estate and coupé bodystyles with a choice of petrol or turbodiesel engines, the 406 replaced the Peugeot 405 in Peugeot's lineup, and was itself replaced by the Peugeot 407.
It used the same platform as the Citroën Xantia, though without that car's sophisticated hydropneumatic suspension system.

I was a taxi driver for best part of 20 years, I drove 405s and 406s for a lot of that time. With the 406 I put 450,000 miles on it, the back arm rusted off it and the electrics were questionable, and the timing belt broke at 150,000 miles, long after the recommended interval for the belt (our cars were company cars and weren’t always serviced on time), but it seemed that whatever we threw at them, they just wouldn’t stop! When everything else fell to pieces the old 1.9 xud diesel with 450k was still running sweetly

The ride quality and refinement were likened to being almost Jaguar XJ like at the time by one motoring journalist. The way it was totally unflustered with bumps, potholes, dips and crests in the road and felt planted around corners makes it my favourite out of all the cars I've owned so far and it was still rust free and running well with over 140k on the clock when sold (2 litre petrol).

It is also immensely strong for a 90s car with plastic bumper, mine got rearended when a scooter ram into my rear bumper at speed while I stopped making a three point turn. The bumper was scuffed but otherwise damage-free.

I don’t know what Geoffrey did with the car or that is was a pre-production unit, but the 1998 model was easily pushed into throttle-off oversteer. Just don’t tell my father🤫. And even with the base 1.8 16v was just fast enough, just use the complete 6300 rpm.

Chris Goffey was right at the end. With the 406, 306 and the 206, Peugeot started to decline and though these cars still were successful, expecially the 206, but you could feel that it's not the same good Peugeot. And when the 607 came, as the first hint of the giant frog faced front, the writing was on the wall.

I'm thrilled with how good some of the newer Peugeots look, especially the 508. I have a 97 Peugeot 605 Turbo 2.0, and i wish the 607 which replaced the 605 had been a bit nicer.

@@Hipas_Account 605 TCT? That's something you don't hear every day!
I have its sort of weird brother, a '93 Citroën XM TCT. I've always been more of a Citroën guy, specially on the big cars (the quirks, novelties, the greatest suspension of all time, etc) so the 605 was never in my radar but admittedly, it's far from common and I'm happy someone is taking care of them.
Also had a 2000 4th restyling 306 as a 1st car (bought it 4 years ago, lasted 2 years on my hands), good comfort, good gearbox, not bad but not great stability, horrendous engine and worse reliability. The 1.9d was supposed to be tank but leaked everything everywhere, had no power at all, fuel consumption was rather high, and of course, sounded like a tractor. Replaced it with a VTEC Civic, not as comfortable but a billion times better everywhere else, never looked back.

Prophetic summing up there from Chris Goffey. How right he was as Peugeot certainly started their slide with this and the 206.
Dad had three 405's before getting his last company car, a 406, in 1998. 405 was 200kg lighter and it showed in handling, economy and performance compared to the 406. Whoever started making the decisions at Peugeot in the mid 90's caused their reputation a lot of harm.

My uncle ran a European wide security company and did 700,000 miles in his 2.1 5 speed Executive. He was so busy to keep with the 9k oil change intervals he'd often service it himself over many Autoroute rest area drains! Things were so different back then. Two box rebuilds, one Bosch fuel pump, two AC compressors and three alternator's, one rack and a few discs along the way. Good car, his wife made him replace it and it got pushed to the back of the garage.

    Superb review
I still own a 406 coupe 3.0 V6, from 2003, its the second coupe I got. Perhaps the coupe still looks better today than the other variants, though to me they still look very nice and represent an era, where Peugeot still build really good and well engineered cars. The review is spot on, because the 406 was and is about a comfortable smooth ride as where the models from the 70's and 80's also. I had to choose many company cars over the years, though more recent Audi's, BMW or Mercedes couldn't beat my old 406 Coupe comfort wise. Of course I'm biased and really still love my 406 Coupe, though I was surprised and still am how well and reliable the 406 is. I do really appreciate that this review have been added, for sure watched it at the time, though I forgot all about it ;-)

Once out of town it was great but in hindsight it would have been a lot better with the HDi or a petrol.

When Puegot had a beautiful elegant understated😍 sedans in their lineup alongside hatchbacks and estate or wagons . Now it's all boring Crossovers 😴 😒 and maybe a hatchback somewhere. We never got a 406 in India as it would have been a affordable premium sedan below Mercedes E class W124 or 201 maybe. We got a hand me down 309 in 1994 with 1.3ltr petrol and 1.7ltr diesel I think . Which was a sales flop as Premier automobiles labourer had strikes and Premier cheated on Puegot literally by manufacturing another outdated hatchback from their old business partner Fiat "The Uno" hatchback. This made Puegot mad and they left India in 1997 effectively closing the production of 309 . Only a few 1000units were made and the car had good demand initially despite being outdated. But the news of bad quality dashboard plastics which couldn't survive the Indian summer killed the excitement in afterwards alongside limited service network and showrooms.
