Whats up guys! My name is Kenji and I am currently a medical student at King's College London after graduating from the University of Birmingham with a Bachelor's degree in Medical Science (BMedSci). In this video, I talk about my experience studying Biomedical Science at the University of Birmingham and how it compares to studying Medicine at King's College London.
If you enjoyed the video, please give it a like and a comment so I know to make some more! Also please show support by sharing it with a friend who's also interested in Medicine :)

Studying medicine had always been my dream as a child, the entrance exam for medicine in my country is very difficult and only a small percentage get in. I worked my ass off for that exam and I just passed it. In my first year of med school I came to the painful realisation that I hate people, I don’t want to work with people (patients) all the time. I changed to biomed and realised that that was what I wanted all along, I just didn’t know biomed existed when I was little, but medical research is what I’ve always wanted.
And now I’m in my second year of biomed and I’m loving it :)))

@CJ Official If you're going to apply to Med school I'll give you a piece of advice. Make your writing legible, and fill out your test request forms properly... If you don't they get rejected at the lab and delay your patients treatment /care. As a trainee BMS I find this infuriating and frustrating that fully qualified doctors cannot write out their full name, ward area and test requested on a bit of paper... Or even in some cases make it readable.

Couldnt agree more with every word of this video. Switching from a Biomed degree to medicine has been such a welcomed changed. Biomed was a lot more draining a degree than Medicine. Don’t give up on trying to pursue Medicine if you’re really passionate about it. Doors will open for you if it’s meant to be, just have faith.

@@akifrahman Yeah of course! I always wanted to do medicine, and I certainly had the grades to go straight in but unfortunately, I had to repeat one of my college years for personal reasons. What was made quite apparent very quickly was that despite having a reason for the repeat and having solid grades, most Universities wouldn't consider my application for the standard A100. Instead of letting that be the end of my goal of getting into medicine, I decided instead to apply for Biomedicine with Biochemistry, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and then applied for Graduate entry medicine where I was offered a place on my first attempt. Just goes to show that even in the face of rejection, when people are telling you that it will never happen, you need to believe in yourself and keep on pushing through!

2:38 really crazy how the course build-up is soooooo different, firstly among Uni's within one country, and then again compared to other regions in the world. Your 2nd year was soooo specialized already. Basically organ systems were all covered in anatomy and physiology in my 1st and 2nd year. My 2nd year (in Ghent, Belgium) was molecular biology, biochemistry, histology, statistics, immunology, biological model systems, biomedical analytical techniques, biomedical literature review...
In terms of workload: indeed. In Biomed you perhaps go ahead and apply earlier, as in medicine you need more basic stuff to memorize before applying. In essence, biomed trains you mostly to progress to research, which is to CREATE new knowledge. Medicine, mostly, is to apply the medical practices that exist, so it's to APPLY knowledge. But it doesn't mean you can't be both a MD, PhD and still get into research of course, perhaps only clinical.
12:25 good point there. Thing is, grades are a momental snap-shot, there's so much more to learn 'on the job'. Still, medicine holds a lot more responsibility directly as you're immediately dealing with humans. So if I had to choose, I would rather see a physician graduate with good marks based on a strategic call where they divided the exam load between 3 terms (1st exams, 2nd exams and reexams), than someone who pumped it all in struggling in 2 terms only and doesn't know several muscles for example. You get my point? For biomed, a certain grade rate is required for entering a PhD for example, but you can get a job in industry (or somewhere else) as well if you don't have the best grades out there :)
    Great video, Kenji!
Great to see fellow honest 'guides' for the next generation into science/medicine!

I've done Biomedical science for my degree and loved it, and now finishing my master in Immunology (Vaccine yeay!). Yes there is a lot of presentation + writing essay because you need to get used to writing thesis and proposal which is can be 100 pages long and present your paper to your audience. But if youre passionate about what youre doing, everything is easy. Not to mention, you can test your theory right away using cell line or mice in the lab. It gives you satisfaction if your theory/hypothesis is correct and working in the lab is fun as hell. Unfortunately, job scope for medical research are limited, atleast here in New Zealand. Youre relying on fund or project to get paid and survive. If you ran out of idea or your research didnt get approve, you end up not getting funds and become jobless. But you can still work in the pathology lab in the hospital or clinic, or work in the lab for food industry where they pay you hourly. Overall, I love Biomed, its fun to learn, but there's cons that worth noting.

I am so happy that I find ur vid on this matter. I'm currently studying biomedicine for my bachelor's degree, and i was thinking of continuing into medical school. However, I find that very hard because unlike the US, Canada, UK, etc, my country, Indonesia has little understanding on what biomedicine is. And the way med school works here is very different. So, I'm currently having a hard time on figuring out what to do after I graduate. Not to mention that biomedicine is usually a graduate course here (don't know why, I thought it was a 'premed' course in other countries, but apparently not here lol), so... yeah.. Often times I feel like I chose the wrong choice, like taking biomedicine is not a good choice if you're studying here (because it's very uncommon and most people don't know what that is, which is sad).

Here in Brazil its almost like this! People really think undergrad biomedical students are just studying biomed because they didnt get enough entrance exam grades to be accepted into medical School (here in Brazil you can do medical School right after high School) Unfortunately thats true in some cases, but me for example, I can't see myself being a physician, I love Biomedical sciences and I want to get a PhD degree in a lab abroad, but sociaty needs to value this degree as well, its so hard but people think its less important🤧

Fellow Indonesian here! I aimed for Forensics for the whole time, so I might not be the best example. But I used to think that to be a forensics officer, I had to have graduated from MD (equivalent) first, which is a hard think for me to accomplish as I am from social studies in High School (I am not allowed to switch to Sciences back then by my advisor because they need 'smarts from social studies' to throw to competitions to). Then, I took Biology for Bachelor and Forensics in UNAIR for Masters. And when I realized it, the Forensics program I am in, is more like forensics development and medicolegal instead of medicine aspects of it, hence I may not able to even work in the carreer I am set to. The one I am for required medicine for Bachelor and Forensics as specialization, so you can imagine how bamboozled I am. It is as if my whole life has gone waste, along with my youth, just because my HS teachers need someone for them to uplift their reputation.

@@WildSkyGalaxy Most of forensics programs in Indo are specialization for Pendidikan Kedokteran (Bachelor degree equivalent of 'med school), so it is literally a Masters for docs. While the one I am in is the only Forensic program someone from social studies can enroll in, as it works like biomed, hence more research and development orientated. I will not able to be a doctor, like at all. While to be a doctor will not be my priority, my choosen career ended up to have that as requirement. It is truly pity that in our country, social studies students still not able to be a doctor, if it does, I can enroll in one. Instead the only choices are either I study abroad or give up entirely and waste a lot of money.
There is a program called Magister Kedokteran Umum (M.Kes), but even though it has 'doctor' in it, you are in no way becoming a doctor after graduate. It is also similar to my degree, and works as a stepoing stone for someone who has more ambitions to be head of nurse, head of divisions/specializations, or head of clinic/public hospitals/etc. As we called it 'jalan buntu'. Either you graduate from biomed and adding another bachelor degree that will ended up the only one you use or just keep doing biomed if you are in love with research and development aspects of it.
Btw, where do you study biomed from? I also adding another Bachelor in my belt. I study at IVET semarang for Biomed XDD
