Coffee maker does the same thing if you don't put the grounds in the top. Just run water through it with a tea pack in the cup, add sugar to it and presto. Fresh hot tea

To be fair, the art is both visually impressive in how it make much out of little, and its funny and clever. You don't need high detail to make good art.

Flavor is not the reason you aren't supposed to heat water in a microwave.
The water can superheat to above boiling temperature but not actually boil until the surface is disturbed when you pick it up, at which point it explodes boiling water all over your hands and face. This phenomenon is called a bump.

You can, in fact, brew tea from water heated in a microwave. You just have to make sure it doesn't get too hot and make the tea bitter.
