    I’ve had this for 50 years, and I have learned how to use it to my advantage. Long term memory is so sharp vs short term. I can recall events in detail 40+ years ago. Short term...I can lock myself in the house cause I can’t find my keys. 😝Focus on what you are interested in, IS way above normal people, so is the recall, and that is a huge advantage for research, etc.

    • @RachelLara
      @RachelLara 3 місяці тому +1

      We tend to be discrepant in the areas of working memory and recall. Long term memory is a gem as we store information by piggybacking it onto other information.
      People tend to think we lack dopamine but actually it’s that when our dopamine crosses the synaptic bridge it’s actually disabled. It’s like being throttled by your internet service provider.
      I always have to tell people “INTEREST BASED NERVOUS SYSTEM, not a behavioral choice, guys.” Lol. I annoy me too.

    Great ep. But I’d just like to say - ADHD is seen as a disorder, not because there is something wrong with us but because our brain differs from what is considered normal or typical. We shouldn’t dispute that we are far more likely to have addictions, be out of work, have eating disorders, etc. When ADHD is managed and/or treated, yes we can excel. But just flat out saying it’s a superpower can be harmful. It definitely wasn’t my super power when I was struggling to hold down a job, when I had PNA and when I didn’t want to be on Earth anymore. It’s still not my super power because I have up and down days. I can be so productive one day, then it’s like my body needs to rest for a week.

      Are we far more likely to have those things because we “have ADHD”, or because we have internalised the belief that we’re “not normal” and therefore not right? Food for thought. I’ve personally had a lot of peace in accepting myself for exactly who I am, and that’s powerful.

    I found it refreshing to flip the script & start emphasizing the positives. I loved the Ferrari analogy. Choosing to see the glass half full rather than half empty has changed everything in my life. For instance, I recognized that my desk job had become monotonous and repetitive, so, harnessing my ADHD creativity, I reorganized and restructured files and forms to streamline certain tasks for a better flow. I knew it was working when I ended up with more time and everyone else adopted the same format. And, yes, I’ve been divorced, but I stopped looking at it as failures and started thinking that I’ve been blessed to have had 3 people who thought enough of me to want to spend their lives with me. (I’m in my sixties, so those marriages were fairly long & had ran their course.) Yes, I have challenges in life, but I don’t beat myself up about it anymore. Self-acceptance is good medicine. I’ve rambled on here a bit, but I hope someone will find something worthwhile for their own life. Thanks for the video.

    The think is no matter how creative your job is it gets monotonous, I am a Copywriter myself but I get bored with the daily work which doesn't interests me, i do get moments to shine and show my creativity skills but they are rare in comparison to bread & butter tasks, so the challenge remains there. No amount of superpower can compensate the lack of consistency!

    Medication has made all the difference in my life and my son born with ADHD, it gives us focus with our superpower. Stop villainizing medications when they’re the difference between able to accomplish goals and rudderless inattentivity. The only people who should have any say on ADHD medications are people who have been thoroughly diagnosed, otherwise your dim, uneducated purely speculative views are as invalid as a person telling a fish how they should live in the ocean.

      My brother in-law and his wife chose to homeschool their son.By the time he started highschool, He was undeveloped socially, never learned social skills properly and couldn't understand social ques. It really damaged him. We would sometimes babysit their son and he was unbearable. He go hyper, jump around and accidentally tear posters off walls and when he would play with my son and his friends , they found him extremely odd. I pulled my brother-in-law aside grilled him about needing to be around other children. My brotherinlaw took my advice and finally put him in a public school which greatly improved his social skills but by this time it was almost too late. Be careful.

      @@RachelLara that's why you need some sort of relationship with your children's educators. Then you can monitor.My son had some terrible teachers that weren't addressing his issues and just putting him into corner with a colouring book and he wasn't learning anything so we shifted schools. But kids actually need a little struggle, they need challenge ,discipline and authority and most importantly they need to be around other children, they need to experience positive and negative interactions with a variety of other kids. This is apart of learning to cope in the real world. Personally I think my brotherInlaw and his wife kindve ruined their son by robbing him of this with homeschooling...

    While following your hyperfocus might seem like good advice for maximizing your potential with ADHD, my experience has shown that it can also push away loved ones like your spouse, kids, parents, or close friends. I’ve pursued my passions intensely, only to realize later that I lost important relationships in the process. This often led to deep disappointment, and I found myself sabotaging my own passionate creations, whether they were business ventures, projects, or art. YES! THIS! ❤ ADHD is NOT a deficit of attention. It is a deficit of Executive Function of the brain due to a lack of dopamine regulation. This video oversimplifies the condition and does not address the actual problem. He only addresses the symptoms.
      Regarding the symptoms, ADHD is a condition that is INTEREST-BASED. So the lack of attention or the behavior of hyperfocus is directly related to their interest in the discussion or topic, or activity.
      For the speaker to imply that ADHD is not a disorder is just plain WRONG!

  • @renatapeters3681
    @renatapeters3681 4 місяці тому +20

    There are some good points here to focus on the positives attributes of ADHD, especially seeing as as children we are exposed to 10,000 more negative criticisms exposed to/ received from others as young children under the age of 10, than neurotypical children. So hearing some praise is very welcome.
    However it’s harmful to the adhd person to say it is not a disorder because it will exacerbate the majority of people not seeking treatment. It is said to be the most easily treatable mental health condition that exists. The consequences of untreated adhd include 14 year shorter lifespan due to accidents, 50% addiction rate, much higher obesity rate, much higher health problems due to lower execute function to do things like turn up to a doctor appointment, remember to take medication, difficulty cooking healthy meals etc etc.
    Some other sad and dangerous stats:
    2.5 times more depression
    70% or more have another major psychiatric diagnosis
    80% comorbid 2nd disorder

    I just started meds for the first time ever for adhd in 32 years, it’s a none stimulant, and has so far been amazing. I don’t have a never ending highway of random going through my brain.
    It’s not really a super power when I’m supposed to be working and messing things up, cause my brain wants me to put songs together or figure out why there is an orange peel on the ground something. 🤣
    I’ve learned to manage a lot without meds but my anxiety was through the roof, depressed, tired when I need the energy, and have the energy when I don’t need it. Never felt like sleep got me anywhere, and would cause me to be unmotivated do to being so burnt out.
    If you can manage with out meds that’s amazing, but sometimes you need a little bit of help.

    Just to clear up some confusion, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) are the same thing. ADD is just an outdated term. They added the H (hyperactivity) becuase they noticed that some individuals are more hyperactive than others, and by including it in the diagnoses of the disorder they were more accurate at finding and diagnosing the disorder. ADHD is not a one size fits all, essentialy it is a disregualtion of executive function. Scientists have also made a discovery that brains with ADHD have a significantly less basal level of dopamine, (the motivation hormone) when compared to neurotypicals. However some people get affected by it differenly, some people are more hyperactive, some are better at hiding it. I do not have any degrees in this field but I am someone who has struggled with ADHD, and have spent the past 3 years deep diving into my condition, listening to neuroscience and psychology lectures and reading scientific research in hopes of finding ways to make it work in this world. I have actually learned a lot about it in a relatively short period of time due to my intense hyperfocus and wanting to learn about it.

      Sir, you have any tip's how to deal with ADHD and how to work

    • @runningriot7963
      @runningriot7963 2 місяці тому

      @@memeskiduniya5930 Fist I reccomend you find a job that works with your ADHD and not against it. Just google jobs for people with ADHD. On a psychological level, I've found that breaking 1 project into smaller subtasks makes it esier for me to complete, rather than getting overwhelmed I can see it's really just made up of a few smaller tasks I know I can do. Also for whatever you do that is hard to get started, think about the work and come up with some sort of reward for yourself for doing it. For example, what is the least rewarding thing that I could do if I accomplish this task that would make it worth doing. Giving yourself a reward, even if something small like a guilt free pass to play video games for an hour, or eating your favorite food after... gives your brain enough motivation to get going. And then from theres it's usually not too hard to keep going. You get a small hit of dopamine after commpleteing the task and that is usually enough to keep going for a while. Alot of people say that taking medications like adderall can help alot, but be carefull becuase if you take adderall and then scroll through reddit, you will scroll through reddit better than you ever have before. Make sure you are ready to do somehting before you take it. And of course, talk to a docter about medication if you go that route so they can prescribe the right one for you. As a life long ADHD'r and someone that studies physchology and neuroscience there is a lot to explain, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I reccommend you do some of your own research online as well. For starters I reccomend you check out the channel "How to ADHD" on youtube. Good luck!

    I was diagnosed in my mid 40s Asperger's with ADHD. Of course my next move was to hyper focus on exactly what that meant 😂. But all through the education my take on it was I was only different because I didn't fit it with what everyone had agreed was the normal way of doing things. So my focus became how to get around them and use all my extra talents to the best of my ability. I have to say it was always kinda half assed until I retired and found myself alone for the first time in my life. I gave myself permission to do anything I wanted in any order it presents itself without questions or condemnation. I simplified all outer world tasks with auto pay and Alexa and have been living my best life truly happy and grateful for every moment. I appreciate this video even though I felt it was a bit simplified to an extreme. But that said I agree 💯 are we truly handicapped in any way other than not fitting in? I certainly do not find that now that I have had the opportunity to ignore their rules and run. 😂❤

      Very true! I would argue, people who don't have ADHD never focus properly on any one thing, because their brain is always multi tasking. Whereas, hyperfocus allows one to be 100pc present and pay attention to details normal people miss.
      Even meditation, one might think it is harder for people with ADHD but actually when you do it with the rewards and benefits in mind to five the right motivation, (forget alpha), can reach theta level in no time because of the ability to hyperfocus.

What’s missing though is the discussion of the serious deficits and the fact we exist in a neurotypical world and the critically important information: treatment is often life changing for people, this usually means medication. The stigma against medication damages ADHD’ers lives due to reluctance to even try medication, like stimulants, all the while seriously brain changing medications like SSRI’s are given out to people like candy.
    The life ruining negatives of ADHD are real, and few people will thrive without serious treatment which will in many cases be medication.

    Well... they say with ADHD it's better to work with your hands, e.g. art or design.
    But generally, I've got a mild tremor in my hands, which tricks my brain into thinking I'm more anxious or nervous than I usually am.
    Depending on the situation, my tremor becomes uncontrollable.
    People always point it out and ask why I can't just hold my hands still.
    My grip strength also fluctuates dramatically.

    I appreciate the fact that theres a push to remove stigmas from mental health issues. However, realistically, I think the idea that the word "disorder" should be swapped out can be more harmful to some people. The expectation someone adds to themselves to embody this "superpower" can cause some to go into a downward spiral if they cant reach those "superpower" states. Realistically my adhd brain IS "disordered" in our highly structured, time-conscious world. And yes, I can be hyperfocused and creative, but that can ALSO be a disadvantage from a practical point of view when tried and true systems are in place or when i have other things to do which the hyperfocus blocks out. Not everyone has the luxury or opportunity to follow their passions or be as creative and assertive in their work environment. We cant all adapt our environments to suit our brain function. Yes, I have a disordered brain, but that doesn't define me, it's simply something that has to be managed. It doesn't add or remove any intrinsic value I have as a person. It doesn't have to be a super power for me to be valid, and having a disorder doesn't invalidate me either.

    This does nothing to help any person in school including masters and doctorate levels. When you must take certain courses to graduate.
    Hyperactive is more energy?? Also called psychomotor agitation. People move bc it’s uncomfortable to sit still. Not that there’s an abundance of fantastic energy. You minimize ppl’s pain in being unable to sit still
    I appreciate your attempt here, but as someone who doesn’t have it you walk I fine line of patronizing or minimizing something you have zero idea what it feels like.
    Didorder is bc many ppl feel they don’t have the capacity to create order in their minds and lives.
    An example is adhd ppl can start 10 projects but finish 1 or 2. They get bored easily.
    They often lose items a LOT.
    They can interrupt or blurt out Inappropriate things.
    They can read a page and have no clue what they read.
    Common is when attempting to focus scans show the prefrontal cortex turns off. The part of the brain needed to focus and learn turns off, ppl feel tired and sleepy when supposed to be focusing.
    It’s more than a trait.

      No. We have dopamine. The issue is that it becomes disabled on the reuptake. So when it crosses the synaptic bridge to meet with the other neurotransmitters it’s disabled -.- sigh. I equate it to being throttled by your isp.

    This was hard to sit through. Many people with ADHD (and like disorders) have difficulty in working memory, for example. This affects how we understand others language wise. Its a physical that's not a character trait or super power. It sucks. When I found this out on my 4 hour nueropsych test, when I found this out, calling it a trait undermines the severity of it.
    Of course we can change our perspective on how we internalize our symptoms but this video feels more like its undermining peoples symptoms. Telling a clinically depressed person crying is a super power because every other person cries is inappropriate. Same difference.

    Why is it a problem to have student with ADHD and lots of energy in the classroom? Because they are running around the classroom, and bumping into other students, grabbing their supplies, and mostly creating an agitated tone to the classroom- I know- I've worked with typically developing students and neuro-divergent students. Trust me, it's a favor to the child to take their meds, and foucs and work in one accord with the entire class. It's extremely disruptive and takes away teaching and learning time for both the other students and the teachers when an ADHD student doesn't have a doctor working with them to lessen symptoms so they can work in a harmonious way. I understand what you're saying but by definition A disorder -could be defined as a set of problems, which result in causing significant difficulty, distress, impairment and/or suffering in a person’s daily life. My life is in fu**ing shambles because of this. Kinda impossible to use this superpower when you cant even get the proper medicine or keep a job. Yea when I can hyperfocus on something I'm one of the best at it. But there's such a stigma on this, alot of times we cant even get a chance to do what we enjoy. I've been doing this without meds all my life till 2 years ago, Almost 45 now and we can't even explain our DISORDER to an employer without them firing us. Dont tell me I don't have a disorder when I'm this close to being on disability for it. Obviously you just found your niche, congrats. You're a streamer. Try working a normal job and telling me it's not a disorder

  • @DanielAngbas
    @DanielAngbas 2 місяці тому +2

    I Disagree!
    Not completely though, why? Because hyperactivity may look like it's a good thing but it isn't. Hyperactivity happens because of poor emotional balance in people with ADHD and it shows it self also by ADHDs being highly sensitive to criticism, can easily be manipulated, unable to filter jokes from people, seeing them as attacks.
    The disadvantages are more than the advantage.
    To me that's a disadvantage
    What do you think?

  • @allesmama7919
    @allesmama7919 2 місяці тому

    I was actually one of those people that refused to believe that ADHD is a real thing, despite hearing jokes about me having it my whole life… until I was late-diagnosed during a 6-week therapy at a clinic at age 47.
    For the first time, I began to understand my life & why I was the way I was, and that there’s a such thing as comorbidity related to untreated ADHD 🤷🏻‍♀️
    I was also given the Ferrari example by the doctor, but with the example of having bicycle brakes: and taking meds is like replacing the bicycle brakes with better brakes 🤔
    It would be awesome to be able to control my hyper focus though! 😂 because deciding I have to clear out my daughter’s bedroom Christmas Eve & paint all 4 walls, reposition all the furniture & redecorate during the main holiday days… could potentially be straining on a relationship! 🫣

      On the one hand, I LOVE having so much energy at almost 50 because I can keep up with my teenage daughter & her friends and I feel very youthful in my endeavors, it’s almost like I’m not aging as quickly…
      But on the flip side, it makes dating at my age extremely difficult because most men around my age are starting to slow down & have a hard time keeping up with my tempo. Chasing after that next dopamine hit riding roller coasters (I live 15 minutes from an amusement park), or spending 6 straight hours dancing at a club (which totals 21,000 steps, BTW).
      I’ve been left for this reason more than once 😢 because it’s just too much energy. But when I get hit on by younger men that could be my sons, that just feels all sorts of wrong!

      Being evaluated and assessed for adhd is really a massive, at LEAST 2 to 3 appointment process for hours and hours. I think the problems we have in school have to do with the way they teach. It's very concrete-bound, rote memorization without any integration. We are integrators. We are highly conceptual, and so the concrete-bound lessons are just plain dull. We're off making all kinds of connections between things, lost in thought. Maybe it's just me, but when I hear someone say something, hear a statement from a politician, or see some scene in a movie, I'm finding the fundamental premises in that statement. I'm making logical connections. I'm integrating.

    I have ADHD inattentive, and the problem I have is i dont really have control over the hyperfocus. Everything will lose its spark and become just like any other "boring" activity. I hate the word boring when used in this context because it's invalidating. I can desire to do something very deeply, and my brain just avoids it. And I've never really experienced actual boredom because I can hyperfocus on literally anything. I just have zero control over when the hyperfocus will come. Also, there are hundreds of unavoidable tasks that are a part of life outside of what you do for work that are affected as well, and it negatively affects you when they dont get done.
    Secondly, you didn't cover the list of secondary symptoms that come along with the disorder.
    Its ironic that you say most people have the wrong idea about it at the beginning of the video because youre one of them. I rejected treating my ADHD almost my whole life because I hated this stigma about it. Which actually made the whole thing way worse because I got through life by pretending I was normal and totally destroyed my development. Im now left looking back at all the wasted potential of what my life could have been like. I wanted so much more for myself and let myself down endlessly.
