UPDATE Looking at this now I dont think it is anywhere near 50x, maybe 12x magnification. Such a shame! Still fun for the price though!
literally says 10x on the product page. the math for calculating it yourself is not hard, strange it wasn't in the review.
@@katanshin Unfortunately it was down to me being very naïve, I wasn't shown a product page originally just a sample picture. But to be honest if they had told me it could wash dishes I probably would have believed them!
@@mcphoney lol fair. really this stuff all just comes down to quality of the optics, you can get zoom easily enough but it's zoom without the chromatic aberration or distortion that's the trick. I notice they're still trying to flog them today hence I'm here! It's true their lenses are better than some cheapo versions on amazon, but it's really no comparison to some of the new compact cameras out there which can handle 50x zoom which is when things start getting fun!
@@katanshin Ha ha! Well said! This is the one I want to really try out and I think Ive seen somewhere an 80x zoom one too! But its just way out of my budget! www.gearbest.com/other-consumer-electronics/pp_3004511227967621.html?wid=2000001
@@mcphoney I have a 50x telescope and i cant get that close to the moon. Any tips?
To take a sharp pic while using a tripod and a megazoom, use the timer. Set the timer to 10 secs. Focus your frame. Press. Hopefully in the 10 secs the phone will stop shaking and the picture will be sharp. Same thing with regular cameras. Always use timer and tripod to take megazoom pics.
Thanks Juan! I should of thought of that myself!! Top tip is much appreciated!! 👌
Or get a Bluetooth controller to activate the shutter.
Good advice! Thankyou! 👌
Yea slon on, thought I use 3 sec timer. After preparing the phone for photo
Thank you for your tips information
This is a real review. Don't be fooled by phony reviews by Starscope ( there are 5 at least)
Starscope is a scam'

MCPHONEY Did you add the phone(s) zoom through the scope and did you compare view with 8x$ did it really magnify 50x?
the chromatic aberration of these cheep optics drives me nuts.
I like Amazon's "Compare with similar items" chart they provide with nearly everything sold on Amazon. It shows you other monoculars that are about the same size however they have lower advertised magnification. That's an indication this cheap model is exaggerating the magnification. Magnification is determined by: focal length÷objective (or ocular) lens. According to the specs it's 170mm long with an ocular lens of 18mm. That's definitely less than 10x. Still a decent package for only $27.
Well said!
What if you take a picture with out the telescope and zoom it. and other picture with the telescope. and compare the picture qualities ?
Quality would be degraded by the added optics. It's the same with DSLR cameras. You add more lens, more moving parts and you get a significant downgrade in photo quality. That's why prime lenses are the sharpest you can get (traditionaly) for dslrs because they have no moving parts. Adding the "50x mag lens for the phone" would degrade quality a bit. If you use this kind of phone attachment I would suggest (to get maximum quality) to use a solid tripod. If you are doing video zoomed in like that make sure your tripod is video friendly and has a maneuver arm to quick release and fluidly move the camera. I would also see about using the best quality phone you can for video and that has some sort of stabilization in it.
Of course you would have a much better experience with a dslr. You can get a nice used zoom lens on adorama.com's used section and camera bodies for as low as $40.
I just bought a 12x zoom lens from eBay for four quid, to be honest it doesn’t look too different from this 🤔 I wonder if they are just using the same lenses but charging extra 🤔
Tbh I was wondering about this only yesterday. I think I was blatantly conned when I bought it! 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Even though it stated 50x magnification, it does only look about 12!
I did find one with true 80x magnification but it was £200! Slightly out of my budget!
@@mcphoney ....it's possible then that your stated 50x zoom lens starts from let's call it a ¼x wide angle cos then a reality based 12x magnification compared to a standard accepted lens will be 12 ÷ ¼ which then comes to 48x range . That's assuming that you mean a zoom lens when you say zoom lens . Often and pretty much always folk call a fixed telephoto lens a zoom lens . A zooming lenses is an adjustable focal length lens . The common man will say it is an adjustable magnification lens .
I see it's not you who said zoom lens.
as a professional photographer, the way he touch and knocks on the lens makes me feel uncomfortable
I was looking for this. I'm sure the oils on his finger help the zoom
.....so you'd agree that a telephoto lens is not a zoom lens. Also being told 8x or 50x or 29x is meaningless. The real info is the focal length figure compared to standard accepted focal length
Do you know how much should be the magnification(zoom) of monocular 80x100. Its hard to find?
Can the phone be positioned in portrait and landscape position? Seeing if it can be used with Switcher Studio for live streaming from a distance
Can you get a 8x or 12x and co pare it alongside to this in the same video?
Solid review. And you're interesting. For some reason I didn't feel like I wanted to skip through the vid. Very well made. Good job. 👍🏼
Cheers Abady, that is much appreciated! I find I do talk too much to be honest! Ha ha! But once again thankyou for your kind words! 👌👌👌
Get a life you twat
Will adjust camera in portrait or landscape mode?
How do you attach your phone to this. Do you need a specific adaptor or does it come with one?
The product claims 12 power. For $50, it's an okay deal. I got one to read trailer numbers from the dispatch office and it's adequate. I don't have a smart phone but I have a tablet so I ordered the kit. If it actually works with my tablet I would find it a pretty good deal. What people should understand is that the higher the power the more it will shake unless mounted or on a tripod.
Has it got a bit of a compass or a whole compass? Pedantic Pete wishing you all a good year.
Wonder if you could help, i work in construction and use a laser level so have to align the laser with a pencil mark but i maybe walking up and down a room adjusting the laser until it hits the pencil mark can be time consuming. My question would you know if the cheap £7.00 + monocular's would be good for spotting my pencil mark fo ranges from 6 metres to about 30 metres so i can adjust the laser without walking back and forth. Cheers
Hi John, Apologies for the 4 month wait on a reply. Being brutally honest I dont think it would make out your pencil mark much at all. Maybe from 6 metres buts that about it id say. You can get better monculars/phone telescopes however for a bit more cash. Ive found a phone telescope with true 36x magnification but cant really afford to buy it. If you search APEXEL 36X phone moncular it should come up on youtube! Hope that helps!
I'm a virgin phone telephoto lens vid watcher.
Like everyone else has said, it was well made and clearly showed me what I wanted to see.
Thanks mate 👍
Thank you!
@@mcphoney This cannot work for double or triple camera, right?
Very helpful video. Thanks.
Thank you so much ❤️❤️💕😊
Just for reference : "AIRRRRRTH" is the planet you are currently standing on. You are welcome. 😆
1/2 the vid is dude loving the packaging lol
I do love a bit of packaging me!
However my current videos don’t do it any more! 👌
And its STANDARD packaging - nothing special.
Most amusingly, he seems to like the cheap, low class graphic design - the sort of thing that results from getting the receptionist who did a graphic design short course to make the design rather than paying money for a top line graphic designer.
I got a StarScope Ad before the video, I thought it was the review. Lol.
Interesting. Thanks for the tips!
No problem! 👌
Hi, some of the ads show thermal imaging, is that built in or is it an attachment you have to have on your phone? Cheers
Hi Paul, so just to confirm this definitely does NOT have thermal imaging and is also NOT 50x magnification. Unfortunately my naivety at the time believed it was but it’s probs only around 10x magnification.
To summarise it’s a cheap and cheerful device that does magnify but not by 50x. I’ve seen them on wish for about £10 too!
Btw this video has gone nuts recently, is there a string of adverts flooding the web or something?
Cheers for the update, I’ve just watched the advert myself and it looks to me like another con like the one I received was! 🤦🏻♂️
You can also find these or similar too on aliexpress for much cheaper. True the scope is not that good but if you can get it cheaper from the price you pay on amazon it might be worth trying it out.
I love your reviews plain simple and on point.
Can you use it without phone?
when a telescope says something like 12X50 it means that it gets 12 times closer, and that the diameter of the lens is 50mm (millimeter). the higher diameter you have, more light will into the lens so the picture will be clear even in dark conditions.
...yes, and I gather it's a telephoto lens here , a zoom lens is an adjustable focal length lens but everyone says zoom lens when it ain't .
Cool stuff ....love it ....watching from North Borneo
Thank you
Good review george russel
I enjoyed the review. Is there a reasonably priced tripod you can recommend that can point up?
Citizen X Thankyou! Glad you enjoyed it. I take it for tripods you mean to use with this? I suppose it depends what you are going to use it for. My son loves planes so I took him near the airport along with a cheap 10/12inch tripod and it worked well. (Set it up on a cafe table for him to look through) but I was given that so no idea what it cost. I know you can get small ones off amazon if that’s any help? (Search Velbon cx mini tripod) It has “ok” reviews too. If you are looking for something that goes higher then obviously the price will increase...along with the weight of it! Me personally would just look for any budget version as I expected it to get thrown around in and out of bags, dropped etc! Sorry I couldn’t be more help! Ps. I haven’t tested the velbon cx mini tripod but like I said, seems to be fairly decent!
If you google bird spotter scope tripod and click on images theres some ideas there,i bought a jessops scope which came with the tripod but im sure they will be available to buy seperately, ive only used the scope once ,but the tripod for alsorts, its simply 3 sturdy metal legs and a twist grip handle so you can slowly loosen or tighten to move camera/scope smoothly,i even use it with a p900 camera for quickness to set up,thats how sturdy it is,but obvs i wouldnt let camera balance alone on one but smaller stuff is fine
I have used tripods with a 60 mm zoom spotting scope. the tripod cost about $64 back in 1986 and weighed a little more than 6 lbs, but for something like this it should it steady, but you have to remember that whatever the maximum zoom of your phone (Zp) times the diameter of your lens ( Dl) squared /divided by the magnification(M) you're using squared would give you an idea of the light gathering power at that combined magnification.
You can probably find them online at decent prices.
When the combined magnification of the phone and the lens gets above 30 power , you're gonna wish you had a tripod, usually the heaviest you can economically afford.
I got a similar telescope that had the attachments and absolutely no instructions, and there is no manufacturer or website to look up! Thanks for showing me how it all works! One thing that I have already found out is that it won't fit on a phone with a Rambo case on it!
Spencer Frasher A Rambo case? As in John Rambo? How awesome! Shame it doesn’t work with this monocular though!
No probs for the demonstration, glad I could help! 👌
These can be bought for as low as £3.69 on eBay at the time of posing and the connector to attach the camera is different, probably still plastic and they probably changed it so phones that put the cameras in the centre of the phone rather than the top corner can use it.
The chromatic aberration from your video looks far too much to be useful as a telephoto lens, at least during the day time. My guess is, its probably 2 lenses like a Huygens telescope eyepiece but lets be honest, for the price, you can't fault it.
If China man sell a product with 50 x . that means its magnification is 5.0 x
this shit is usually about 12x and diffraction is just like in kaleidoscope
@Remo Gaggi definitely, like buying a knife in America, over priced monopoly.
Funny
A bit racist don't you think, Mr Magoo?
@@markboudreau1410 naah
There is nothing great about that zoom. How do they get away with the lies on the add. I have a 10euro monocular that has a similar zoom to that
Hi. Can i use this on a multiple camera phone like Samsung A50? Thanks?
Possibly however as I dont own a A50 I cant test it for you. The iphone I tested this on has a duel lens and that worked ok if thats any help!
3:00 is that a focus dial or a zoom dial? I thought mobile phones are fixed focus that these phone auxiliary lenses are focused on infinity so no need to adjust focus on whatever focal length you're in? And also, at 4:25 the black shadow at the edge is called "vignetting" not a lens distortion. Another thing at 5:13, again that is not lens distortion but a vibration shake caused by slow shutter speed of the phone's camera in low light and high magnification that caused shaky image on the details of the moon.
Thanks for your thoughts! Much appreciated! To be honest this is just a cheap and cheerful monocular that has been sold with a phone attachment. I dont think it is even 50x magnification! (Something I didnt realise until someone else commented!() In regards to the zoom/focus dial it is just a focus dial Im afraid!
Good news however is that there is a proper phone telescope available and I really want to try it however its slight more expensive and I cant afford it! (Yet)! Thanks for watching and commenting too btw!
I came here to verify the claims of that phony ads at Facebook claiming how good this phone telescope attachment is, especially zooming in the moon much like how the image look when viewed on the live view of my Sony mirrorless camera body attached to my $300 worth Newtonian astronomical telescope. It turns out that a lot of people were being fooled by that 50x phone telescope ads.
mannydeguzmanjartist Most definitely! I’ve seen the adverts myself on Facebook. Some of them advertise an 8x zoom phone monocular but claim you can see the planets!! So false!
Being brutally honest I don’t mind the one I have reviewed in this video, especially for the price! Plus my 5 year old son loves it!
@@mcphoney ....if your son loves it then that's everything. After all they really are only a toy .
So is good or not good ...
Can you tell me how to see full screen. I just see the size of the telescope hole and it's not clear. I have the iphone 11 pro. Is there help in learning how to use it?
....I'm guessing it means you not getting the lens close enough to your phone lens ½mm even ¼ mm closer makes a difference. Anything in between you can file down ? But very very carefully .
this kind of scopes can be used on a digital camera too?
If you could get it to stay still somehow or attach it to your camera then i suppose so yes!
What's the price?
how bout u use this with huwaei p30
Great review
Nature & Technology Thank you! 👌
Before purchasing I was under the impression that the starscope was all you needed, when it arrived I tried to zoom, nothing. I found out from starscope that I needed an I-phone which was not told an advertisement. This is a great con
I have a Canon camcorder which zooms very well and kicks the crap out of this device, nice review tho mate!
thank you great vid
No problem! Thankyou for watching! 👌
Nice review.. thanks
cyberyan No problem! Hope it helped! I should have done more footage with it attached to a tripod though! Ha ha!
He reminds me of Peter Wingfield or Adrien Brody
A lot of people say Mesut Ozil as well!!
Come on man make up your mind! Which one is it?
Ed Tudor Pole…
how does one get subtitles on UA-cam?
Yeah, there's no way that was 50x looks to be less than 20x, but even then it's nice to have those cheap scopes around.
Just make sure to never look at the Sun, you can use it to project the sun on a white sheet of paper though.
THANK YOU HAVE BEEN VERY HELP TO ME ,PITTING ON MY LIST TO BUY,
No problem!
Dont buy they are crap
What price sir
I brought one of these for $25.00 from Banggood about 6 months ago. The magnification is around 6X. I have a set of Minolta binoculars that are 7X this is less than that. Basically, they are nothing but a bloody con.
He lets you enjoy the brain dope reward like you bought it so you don't have too.
IT DID ECKSHILLY WEHHHHK FAHHLY WELL
I tried to connect the samsung s21 ultra, but could only zoom in 5x from the phone, then it showed a black screen. Why is it?
I’ll be honest this device was a con! So it’s only around 12x magnification but I do still use it as a monocular. As for only 5x zoom im not too sure. But when the screen goes black (it does it on the iPhone as well) i think the phone can’t cope or is trying to adjust. It’s a bit fiddly but you may have to move the phone/monocular around until it works again. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful!
Subscribed. Such a cool guy.
I'd have one today, but I'm not interested in having an optic with only _'a bit of a compass'_ on it. I'd need a whole one.
To be honest this is a nice little device but its a very cheap and cheerful product that is not 50x mag. Does come in use when I take my son to watch the planes coming into land at the airport but thats about it. For the price its great but for professionalism...wouldn't recommend!
entertaining video , it would be funny to see you as an Anne Summers host lol
Some of the videos on their website showing it’s incredible zoom were actually ripped from UA-cam and are actually taken with a Nikon p1000
I noticed that so I looked for a honest review before wasting money. No thanks!!
The packaging look like autozone brake pads 😭😭😂😂😂💯
Would have been nice to actually see the phone attached to the product.
That’s a good point. Apologies! I still have it though so can send pics of it connected if you have an email address?
Just to confirm btw I don’t think this is 50x magnification...think it’s only around 12!
I still like it though!!!
This monocular has the correct designation 8 x 42. This means a magnification of 8x by no means 12x and not at all 50x. Detected by comparison with a quality 10x50 telescope.

while showing the images it may have been better to just let it stand on it's own without holding it, or can it and how does it attach to said cell phone, all I saw was a cap think with a clip like a chip clip.
Totally agree, my apologies! Was one of my early reviews/demos! And I was even naive enough to believe that this was 50x mag when it looks only about 12x.
So yes, it’s not exactly the best demonstration.
Funny thing is however I still use it to this day!
I did find a true 50x magnification one but it’s not cheap! Maybe one day I’ll be able to review it though! Thanks for watching and commenting too btw!
@@mcphoney I appreciate the reply and would like to see 50x as I'm sure others would also. Cheers.

Guys guys guys he wasn’t clickbaiting it wasn’t actually 50x but it said that it was on the scope he didn’t know that it was only 12x or 8x he got a con scope and he thought it was actually 50x
Thankyou, that is very much appreciated. Honestly I didn’t realise it wasn’t 50x until someone else mentioned it in the comments!
For such a cheap price though I’m still made up with it, and my 5 year old loves it even more!
Good news is that I have found a true 50X...except it’s not exactly cheap! Hoping somehow to get one to review though!! Watch this space!
Once again though thanks for the support!! 👌👌👌
madein usa? please answer.
Doesnt quite say but think its China. Just to confirm btw this is not 50x mag! I was too naive when told it was!
Can they add a photo or video taken with the actual product they advertise and sell? It would be interesting to see a pic or video taken with the product itself. WHY do they only show vids taken by another product instead?
what about adding a webcam on to it how would that work out.
Technically if you can align it correctly and hold it steadily in place it shouldn’t be a problem. I haven’t got a web cam to test it out myself but do have an action camera that I could test it out with! I’ll see what happens and let you know! 👌
@@mcphoney oh please do I love to hear what you find out and thanks for the fast reply.
Put on security cameras
Just make sure you use a decent tripod, cause almost any shaking would be noticeable.

verified at 3.8k. ABSOLUTE GOD!
It has crometic abberation?
Chromatic aberration, and Yep.
Does this work with samsung devices? (Specifically s7 edge) Pls tell me really want one and thanks for the vid:)
Edit: guess i gotta keep looking this is con
Should work with most phones, to know about specific devices you would have to work out the measurements yourself, I wouldn't reccomend this one anyway it's only 12x zoom and cheap plastic, your better off getting a 22x adjustable zoom metal one
price ye I know I got a difderant one that's 35x zoom best on market I'll give u link if u want?
I believe Orion telescopes sells a Monocular about 8 power and 42 millimeter (objective lens Diameter). It could cost between 40 to 80 dollars, but the optics shouldn't have any spherical or chromatic aberration to them, no fuzziness at the edge of the view, nor rainbow like colors. Ali Express sells several models from about $13 on up, but the lens quality isn't as good. However because you'd be viewing through a much larger lens than the one built into your phone, the image would be much brighter. Just search online for an 8x 42mm monocular.
They are crap dont buy
....it won't be zoom if it's cheap, it'll be telephoto lens. A zoom lens is an adjustable focal length lens and can't be built cheaply like a telephoto lens can be .
I got the same one,,different name off wish....works pretty good
Awesome! I still use this when I take my son to the airport to watch the planes!
@@mcphoney definitely ain't as good as advertised but for the money its ok
Yeah, have to agree there. I was told it was 50X magnification...hence the name of the vvideo...but looking back at it now I think it’s only 12X magnification.
(I should of known better! 🤦🏻♂️)
For the price though, I’m happy with it. 👌
@@mcphoney agree..its definitely not 50x zoom..
Can you use this without a phone??
unlitdarkness6 Yes indeed. It’s basically just a monocular with a phone attachment. I only use it without the phone nowadays!

No.
This is 12x not 50x
Ahmed Al-Khalaf I wouldn’t be surprised! Ha ha!! Still it’s pretty cool, especially for the price! Thanks for watching and commenting btw! Much appreciated!! 👌
Guess not even 12x, it's 8x for sure, but the low price and big objetive aperture make it a good piece, you can found one of these for no more than 15US$ on China sites...
@@euX222X it's more that 8x, I have an 8x on my galaxy s7 and its way less zoomed
HM how to order
Imagine how good this is with the 11 pro max or 14 pro. It is probably way better now.
I thought was too good to be true. Holding off buying
I’ll be honest as a monocular on a steady tripod...it’s very very good. Really would recommend it! I’ve been taking my son to the airport (only 4 years old but loves watching them takeoff/land) and I’ve been taking the monocular with us and it really did work well. For stationary objects it works just as good with out a tripod. The problem occurs once the phone is attached. If you have a very small or very light one then it would be fine but with the iPhone 6s and 7plus the connector clip just couldn’t carry the weight very well. Which is a shame.
The reviewer is delightfully optimistic but when I watch these reviews I want pure objectivity. Does said item match it's commercial claims? How does it compare with the competition? etc., etc..
Very good points Dale, and I totally agree.
I’ve been looking/going over my previous videos recently and seeing what to improve/change/takeaway etc so I’ll take your advice on board. 👌
Btw quick question, did my review for this monocular come up as a suggestion or have your seen it advertised else where etc? Because over the last few weeks this video has gone nuts in terms of views/comments! Not sure why though!
