Because of you, I worked up the gumption to open the back of an old pocket watch I’d bought my wife while we were dating. Thought it was a cheap, dime store watch. Turns out it was a 1903 IWC Schaffhausen watch with a silver case. I never would have even thought to check that out before your vids. Thanks!
Thank you for showing the slippage of the movement holder at around 19:10 when you said "I hate when that happens" . I always felt like I was the only one doing that from watching all of these other watch channels. The fact that you keep your slip-ups in the videos means a lot to amateur tinkerers like myself.
Regarding screws. I've been taught to slightly turn the screw backwards and allow the screw to settle in the threads (they are aligned) and then in the normal direction gently insuring the proper mating of the two thread sets. I enjoy your show everytime.
Because of this channel and others as well, I was able to have a great conversation with my Tax accountant about her Hamilton wrist watch (a triangle type) she was wearing and she told me how much she enjoyed the watch and also how she made sure to have it serviced and also how she actually asked to see the inside of her watch as it was being serviced, so thanks for teaching me!

I'm surprised that I didn't feel that way on this one. Normally I'm in that same boat about wanting to clean them, but in this particular one that splotchy appearance just does it for me and I think looks better than what I imagine a completely clean dial would look like.

Your channel is one of my favorites, you have a constant variety of watch styles, small, large, pocket and all have back stories. And i used ultrasonic cleaners in my professional career making micro processors and when they became available for home use I got one to clean my airbrushes for my hobbies. Great video.
I've never been one to really give watches much thought. I've only really had one and it was one that kind of went with a gift basket set of things for a birthday. But while I may never pick up the hobby, the way you talk about it and go through the process is really similar to how I feel about painting miniature figures. Like, at it's essence, it's as simple as picking up a figure you like, getting some brushes and paint and just going for it! Will anyone notice or appreciate the little details that you put into the insides of the watches you restore? Maybe not. Will people notice the itty-bitty buttons or wood grains, or the details in the scenery that I put in? Maybe not. But WE notice, and WE like the effort! Yours are definitely videos I listen to while I paint, and I enjoy the simple passion behind your craft that we share.~ ^ ^
This is my 5th or 6th video viewing your skills and I must say I have the so called lingo down on the name of the parts and how they are arranged it is very therapeutic to say the least, I have been a welder fabricator / mechanic for my life’s career since I was 18 and now just turned 60 and this would really be an outstanding hobby to take on. Your explanation of every aspect of the work your doing at the time just says hay I can do this and no matter what we tackle in life we all need to be tout how. You are a master of your craft keep the videos rolling….
I clicked on this just 27min after you uploaded it. It already had over 3k views. As I write this it is nearing 4k. I like this stuff but am a little surprised to find out so many others do, too. I know so little people in my own life that have any appreciation for watches or even wear them. To me, they are like little pieces of art.
Well, Marshall, you actually infected me. Sort of.... I have always had a soft spot for the old, antique, wood cased clocks. My 99 year old neighbor left me his old Seth Thomas "School" clock and my grandfather used to repair clocks before he passed away in 1963 and I remember pestering him to wind up some of his clocks so we could hear them chime whenever we would visit. You gave me the "push" to look into repairing those old clocks. They ARE quite similar to a watch movement, just bigger and easier for my 70 year old eyes to see the parts. I'm just a beginner, but I am enjoying the learning adventure. Like you, I also have a background in auto mechanics in my younger days. 😉
I know you p, ug your tools kits every video. I actually appreciate that. There are a LOT of crap tools ‘out there’. I appreciate that you have helped get through the trash.
Love your work, Marshall. I do disagree with calling that patina on the dial. It looks like someone spilled coffee on it, to me. I know this is a very subjective area.

I was practicing on a Weslock, and a minute hand left me when i laughed in triumph, because i did the first step. sorry for bad spelling just trying to get this out. So, 1 year later, i found it on the floor, and i was like, how?!

Your talk about brands switching to mostly in house made movements reminded me of the saying, just because you can doesn't mean you should because just because they can make movements in house doesnt mean they are good movements. The reason certain brands still exist is because they specialize in making near perfect movements for others to make beautiful watches.
21:36 - I find a silicone tipped stick is perfect for this. It keeps the perfect amount of down pressure and stays put while you focus on aligning the pivots with your other hand.
I learned a trick from another yt watch restorer to seat the pivots in the bridge. Tap the side of the movement holder, the vibrations will cause the pivots to move in to place.

I like your videos. Not really into ASMR, but your diction is quite relaxing. One video you spent some time tuning. I think possibly a neat idea would be sister videos of the tuning, separate from the restoration. Maybe not, but thought I'd mention, it strikes me every once in a while.
Marshall, always love your videos! I looked at a Yema site and while they have some inexpensive ($369) pieces, many are in the thousands range! Maybe they were priced lower in the 70s!
I had a Gibson Les Paul the exact same color as that dial, along with gold hardware. It was a really pretty guitar. Definitely a late 80s color scheme on that guitar. That hue of pink works well with gold.
12:05 dude I saw one of these cleaners at a flea market in SW MO just the other day… it was rough shape, unrestored, mostly there but the glass was not broken! Made me think of you
Great project and well done. I do wish you could’ve done a little on the face to improve that stain and fixed up the case a bit, gold looks really nice polished up a bit. Plus just adds to the effort you made. Love watching and listening… like therapy lol
Oh hey the spring bars on the straps are something I've only seen once before on a watch I recently bought. They are super convenient since if I want to take the straps off and clean the case off to get sawdust and such off I don't need to fight with them.

My favorite part of this watch is the beautiful patina on the dial! It would have been a tragedy to have destroyed it by attempting to clean/restore.
there’s times where patina isn’t patina: it’s gunk…this is one of those times.
