      I hate it when your rolling along coming to a hill and some jerk in front of you slows you down becouse they want to keep to 10 mph below the speed limit 😡

      @@markdunbar8219 Some trucks can't go faster... like mega carrier trucks. They are governed and have reduced torque. My company turns our trucks down considerably and it sucks!

    The most important thing for fuel economy is the weight ofthe drivers right foot. If to heavy it causes excessive fuel consumption and increases general wear and tear on the vehicle.

      I use cruise control on the highway. My right foot means nothing . Fuel quality and aerodynamics are the most important.

    Highway speeds make the biggest difference in my fuel economy. Driving 55 vs 65 changes MPG for big 7.3 IDI engine from 17 to 21.5

      Yes, squared law applies on speed related drag, so 10% speed reduction means only 81% of the drag. The man is generally right and yes, miracle magnets or other snake-oil fuel products do nothing for calorific value. Sadly, tailgating has a huge beneficial impact on fuel consumption, but promotes collisions!

      Wonder what kind of fuel economy you'd get with an electronic 7.3 IDI.
      By "electronic 7.3 IDI" I mean a 7.3 IDI with an injection pump but controlled by an ECM and solenoids instead of a mechanical rack, governor, and check valves.

      @@electric7487 I've thought about this before, but one of the beauties of the IDI is it's simple and mechanical, and therefore incredibly reliable. Still I'd love to see one with modern injection and pumps, an ECM and modern features like injector shut-off on deceleration. Probably bump those numbers up to 23-24 mpg. Pretty incredible for a 40 year old diesel engine displacing 7.3 liters. It's funny, my buddy's with their modern 7.3 powerstrokes average 15 mpg, albeit more power.

      @@Taydrum I just found out that Caterpillar are using those distributor-style common rail fuel pumps on their C7.1 and C9.3 off-highway engines. Seeing as to how the IDI's fuel pump is also a distributor-style pump, I think a common rail system would be better for a new IDI as it makes everything much more compact. Also, I'd like to see spherical swirl chambers like the ones shown in chris.chemidl.in/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/1.005.jpg

      @@electric7487 Definitely a good place to start, however I know these things get complicated fast. Probably runs a different fuel pressure range, and the IDI stock injectors pop at a pretty low pressure. Would need newer injectors, and that would probably affect the timing. I believe those are also 6 cylinder injector pumps.

    slowing down is what I do to save with heavy loads, usually when I pay for fuel. Brakes dragging could be a reason for a sudden drop in fuel economy. All excellent and complete methods.

    No free lunch anywhere. I have run 60 mph everywhere, minimum idling, back off on the hills, little throttle on acceleration and made top fuel economy in a small fleet of 200 trucks. I didn't really try for this. The data sheets came in and that was the result. I did this more than a few times but mainly did it because of fuel cost.
    Kenworth T600, Cat 425, 18 speed with tall rubber(24.5).

    I think driving speed is a significant factor due to drag. The first time I had driven through Utah and Nevada in our diesel pusher, several semi trucks passed us on I-80 driving over 70mph. Since I live in California, observing these trucks flying past us was shocking since the speed limit in CA for vehicles with over 3 axles is 55mph. Needless to say, the fastest I usually drive our 34' diesel pusher is 65mph.

    Your math is just fine, but 5 mpg to 6 mpg is NOT a "small improvement." It's 20%. That's a huge improvement.

      Chad Jessup however I do run Alcoa ultra one rims with Bridgestone M710 drives and Michelin xline energy steers to maximize fuel economy the best I can. I also run the lightweight steel drums, it's not cheep to run efficiently but I was getting 6.8mpg pulling a reefer with my 96 international coe so imo it's well worth it.

    Great information. I have a 1981 Mercedes 240d. The has answered many questions. I use Amsoil synthetic diesel oil for Classic diesels.

      Find out how much the timing can be advanced on those. I think it’s 24 or 26 degrees max. That really helps fuel economy from what I hear.

    In my experience the biggest factors in reducing fuel consumption are, reduce speed, less acceleration, correct tyre pressure, aero improvement, keep to maintenance schedule and anticipation to minimise speed changes etc. Reducing speed and how fast you accelerate have the added benefit of prolonging engine and transmission life, and time between overhauls. If you thrash it you trash it.

    I remember learning to run the engine down to peak torque in an old series 60 class back in 2000. If you've never ran out under load that low of rpms you may think it is breaking your engine because it sounds bad, but it does bring the fuel mileage up and didn't seem to hurt the longevity of the engine. Great video, thanks for the content!

    Biggest fuel savings I’ve ever had was disabling the stupid 4-cyl mode in my V8 Silverado 1500, and having it tuned. Plus it drives a hell of a lot better. Anyways I think for OTR diesel applications driving style/ speed, and not idling for long periods of time are the biggest fuel savers!

    My (local/hourly) quad axle dump, 2006 KW with CAT C13 ACERT with 4:10 gear ratio.
    I shift @ 1500 RPM and I use my Jake always.
    My MAX speed is 60 MPH @ 1500 RPM.
    I keep up on my tire pressure weekly.

    We have a stretch here in Tx (SH10) and the speed limit is 85. Drove through there once and it was strange feeling my silverado bounce off the rev limiter every few minutes with that stupid 96mph or whatever limiter GM has or had?.. Anyway good stuff man, keep em coming!

    Higher compression means better fuel economy, and this means changing oil, making sure the rings are not worn out. etc.

    My son has a KW T800 C13CAT 475 it has 1.500 million miles and still running good no blow by no oil leaks hardly uses any oil after 15.000 oil change. Great fuel mileage my son takes good care of his truck he uses Mystick oil and lucas additive in his oil and fuel

    aero dynamic wereout for me unless I was running empty pulled an rgn 7 axle setup most of the time the difference between 65 and 70 was half mile to a gallon Lucas fuel additive after running 90 with and 90 days without worked out to 2/10 a mile gallon better with proper tire pressure makes a difference. also tires last longer and have less tire problems it all counts in the end

    Well explained Josh. A formula 1 motor is a good example of high RPM in a small displacement engine giving high horse power. They have low torque hence need lots of gears and lots of skill from the driver to keep the car in the power range. They are also very high tech and have a short and expensive life. Horses for courses. Jeff

    I have a FL70 Freightliner and regularly got 10mpgs...one of the things I do is to always take my foot of the throttle if I see a red light down the road...just coast...saves brakes, clutch and fuel. Sometimes you don't even have to stop and start...you just keep moving...

      Yup. That’s one of the biggest inefficiencies you avoid there. Stop/starts are a killer. My car gets 60mpg but traffic lights put it down to 36 average.

    I figured some of this on a 40’ motor coach. I drove for two years at 60-62 mph. I improved mpg by bumping speed up to 66 which put that engine in max torque range.

    One fuel additive that does what it says is Enerburn which reduces soot and increases my regen interval a lot. There is a similar new product called BetterDiesel FBC that does the same and includes injector cleaner. My regen interval was about 350 miles and is now about 500 miles.

    I think a lot of people will gloss over the fan concept and the amount of power they can kill. First off yes I know the demo is on a gas engine but remember the equation for HP doesn't change (=[RPM x Torque]/5252). Watch Engine Masters episodes 20 (fan) and 35 (accessories) on motor trend, since they removed them from UA-cam.

      I agree it's very huge, but I find I can't run 55, even though I'd like to, because of time limit, and traffic jams.unforseen setbacks that will make you miss appointment times.

      Aaron Garcia my Freightliner got close to 3/4 gallon better at 68 than 55. Gearing has a lot to do with it. Fleet trucks are specked incorrectly. Cheap cookie cutter trucks.

      Well at 75+ mph my 95 powerstroke drops rpms, 4th gear. Below that it's 3rd and 2400rpm

      Seems to me manufacturers could install gearvendor type units on the 1 ton and under trucks and we could all save a ton on fuel costs. But that would cut into CEO salaries and we can't have that now can we.

    No this is another very important thing an old truck driver taught me there's a magic spot on the accelerator pedal and any less pressure on the accelerator you slow up the tiniest bit more pressure on the accelerator you maintain speed but beyond that,,,, any more pressure on the accelerator with no gain of speed is wasted fuel so always calibrate your foot to the speed mean and don't have your foot just stomped on the floorboard going the same miles per hour back to foot on out of the accelerator,,, and match it to the exact speed and load

    I knew two guys that ran together, same truck, same engine, same loads in all kinds of terrain, souped up 350 Cummins and 5x4s. Only difference was one had higher speed rear ends so he could cruise in 5 direct instead of over. With the power going straight through the transmissions in direct instead of the counter shaft in over he saved 10 to 12 gallons a day over his partner. These were bull wagons on mostly local hauls, so they were not driving high mileage. For a long haul trucker on mostly flat ground, I would expect more difference.

    Hey there. Totally diggin all your knowledge! Thanks for sharing! You have zero idea how much YOU help people like me learning diesel (CAT)! I am running dual CATS 3116’s in a marine environment (Knotty Hattitude). I did not see anything about cold condensed air via intake to increase fuel efficacy increase. Obviously I’m knew to diesel and have zero clue, lol. Wondering if I can get better engine “room” circulation will this increase efficiency in anyway? I guess Im asking if colder condensed air makes a difference in fuel economy for Diesel engines? Btw SW Florida here. Engine room is not sealed, but no forced air mechanism in place just KnN intake filters on engines.

    Aerodynamic resistance is the the speed squared ie double your speed and you burn 4 times the fuel. Also tyre pressure makes a big difference and the make of tyres. Tyres in the UK have a energy rating, wet weather breaking and noise markings on them to help you choose.

    Few Ideas I had watching this
    - You mention jake brakes. They would increase fuel economy if not using air?
    - Alignment of the wheels.
    - Mirrors. Are cameras legal to use?
    - Drain on electrical, lighting, accessories, does it make a good difference?
    - Are there upgraded turbos that would be more efficient?
    - Misadjusted brakes or bad wheel bearings.

    well, using the jake brake does technically increase MPG, since you literally do not burn any fuel for the distance travelling with the jake brake on, plus it reduces brake rotor and pad wear

    Also you can play with the ratios of the truck, like double overdrive.. (inverted gears) and lower the axel ratio, like from 411 to 355. I'm talking because own experiences. Mine a 1995 wia volvo m11 reg 10 speed and 411 rears. Switch the transmission to a 9 inverted and 355 rears, went from 6 mpg to 8.5 mpg. At 72 mph im at 1200 rpms.

    Big things on a 425b, valve set (not cat spec) advance injection timing and smaller exhaust manifold to get you turbo boost up higher, and propane injection we have two doing consistent around 7.5-8 mpg loaded

      Cool! Does the propane replace diesel use 1:1, meaning you save a gallon of diesel and burn a gallon of propane? Or is the propane more, or less efficient?
      Hear anything about water injection? I’ve heard good stuff about that.

    Hey Josh. I'm a fellow Cat truck technician here too! Nice video and full of good information. Lately we have been getting dinged on warranty from Cat for owners having aftermarket software and "hopped up fuel injector codes". Perhaps you can use your channel to spread the word about the subject on changing software and Caterpillar's reaction to it. We are a relatively small shop in the big scope of things and Cat has been really cracking down on warranty claims using the warranty report information against us and I feel that we need to get the word out to the owners that this is happening. We have been denied four times for a total of about 10K worth of parts and labor that we are now having to have the hard conversations with customers about, so any way to spread the word around about another danger of "hot software" would be a good subject to talk about. Really enjoy your channel! Keep up the good work!!!

      Not sure if I'll make a video on it, but yeah you have to watch for any sort of fiddling with the fuel system at all. Cat is bad about training their mechanics and warranty people in general from what I've seen.

    I have been a mechanic for over 40 years. 30 of those as a heavy equipment and truck mechanic working for or with companies and fleets, so basically I live with the equipment and get to see in real world conditions year after year the same equipment. That gives me insight into things that most mechanics never see
    One thing that Always increased fuel economy and increase the life of the machines was switching to Amsoil synthetic lubes.
    I've always seen increases in milage of a minimum of 3 mpg.
    Same on heavy equipment, more hours per tank.
    I had a 95 FL 70 with 8.3 Cummins Allison 6 speed that I always got 6-7 mpg. (Service Truck ) at 135,000 miles I switched everything to Amsoil, engine, tranny, rear drivers, power steering fluid, front hubs and ujoints.
    MPG rose to and stayed at 12 to 14 mpg. By reducing friction you increase available power and reduce rolling resistance.
    Not all oils are created the same and that includes synthetic oils.
    Most lube oils sold in stores are a class / Tier 3, or 4 if marked syn fluid, meaning the base oil is petroleum refined to a slightly higher level with a synthetic additives package.
    Class / Tier 5 oils are true synthetic oils.
    And very few companies sell a Class / Tier 5 lubes.
    Amsoil is one of those that does.
    I have used Amsoil for 40 years not only in my own vehicles but also on my customers fleets.
    I start out with 1 vehicle or machine for a new account and let them decide based upon what they see. I have never had a customer say No.
    On of my earliest accounts was a paving contractor, hiway , roads and large parking lots.
    They had pick up trucks, medium duty and heavy duty trucks, earth moving equipment such as Cat D9s, tract hoes Cat 225 up to Car 345s, scrapers, loaders, asphalt machines etc. 100 machines not counting office pool cars.
    The first full year after running Amsoil lubes in everything they saw a 40 % decrease in fuel purchases, and a 60% increase in equipment production time.
    Meaning far less down time, fewer breakdowns less parts purchased.
    Their savings in the 1st year more than covered the cost of the change over.
    Also with Amsoil you stop change intervals based on hours or miles but by analysis of the lubes.
    After doing test based on miles / hours we established new test intervals which were greatly increased over factory specs.
    Buy using oil analysis to set change intervals you save even more.
    In all the years and all the different companies, machines and vehicles I ve never seen a failure related to Amsoil products.
    It's well worth the money.

    I took a 96 classic with a 475 Detroit. Swapped injectord gateless turbo advanced timing 13 single od 3.07 rears with 11r24.5 truck ran an avh speed per gps of 70 and was getting 7 mpg. Every truck i have owned or setup for people got better mpg with higher hp settings normally 550hp. More power more torque. Allows you to pull better on hills and get back off the fuel.

      Where you are really picking up the mpg, is the 3.07 ratio. If you aren't pulling heavy haul. It works great, just have to keep to the manufacturers recommended minimum rpm and not go below (danger Wil Robinson, danger), some flat-landers would try and pull a higher gear getting into a big grade, pulling max power at low rpm, do that enough times and I believe the cylinders will be dancing in the block before long.
      I'm more of a Cummins engine type. Grew up with the Big Cam III & IV. I like Cat just never ran them. Two friends ran them, one worked great, the other, the engine nearly broke him, he still has it 30+ years later, and uses the truck for hauling his excavator around.

    Scania 16.4 liter diesel produces full 740 horsepower at 1300 rpm and holds it to 1900 rpm. With max torque around 2700 foot pounds at 1,000 and holds it across as well. Sounds like a great city/highway engine to me.

      Yes, but, and there is always a but. A lot of roads in Scandinavia, do not have 100 kph limit, so your not getting into the aerodynamic wall (air resistance going up with the square or cube of speed over 55 mph/90 kph, at which point it overtakes rolling resistance). Those engines are mostly spec'd for their heavy haul.

    It’s really hard in the summer but if you don’t idle at night you will save a metric ton of money. 10 gallons a night x 300 days on the road x $3 a gallon = $9,000 a year. For the winter get a diesel parking heater they use a gallon a day for heat.

    Well as an engineer compression ratios are critical to running an efficient engine along with preventing friction losses and energy into heat loss prevention. Gear is critical to, but namely for diesels 14:1 -22:1 is the sweet spot for compression ratios depending on fuel delivery.

    I'm an Old Farm Boy and we ran Fleet 1540 in all the fleet from the Ford Ranger to the 350 horse Cummins do the D7 cat,,,,,,,, and I never shut engines down I always let them idle,,,, now in the Ford Ranger I discovered when I went from sleep 1540 to synthetic 5w 30 I gained two and a half miles to the gallon,,,,, all my equipment has very high hours and miles on them so running thick oil really made me feel good,,,, but recently I found out on the smaller engines going to 5 W 30 synthetic I've wasted thousands and thousands of dollars in fuel over my 30 years of being a driver operator,,,, I don't want to even think about how much money I wasted I never had an engine go bad but I wasted a lot of money on fuel and gas,,,,, so now I am trying to run lighter oils and smaller engines,,,,, and since I've never had an engine go bad now I'm shutting them down whenever I can so they ain't idling,,,,, just my observation thank you

    Do you have any experience with Archoil products? I've had good luck with their oil additive improving injector function on HEUI setups especially on cold start.

    Biggest improvement to a CAT is a GOOD aftermarket tune. All the CAT tunes are now low NOx tunes ...which reduces the injection timing. Years ago I drove an 01 Classic XL with a 13 double over and 6NZ that had new injectors done by CAT but they also flashed the computer for free since it had never had a reflash since new. With 4 new injectors it went from 5.9-6.2mpg to 4.8 to 5.5mpg and had the most unhappy sounding 550hp ever. The owner got frustrated with the truck and sold it for an ISX Volvo auto. I wish I knew then what I know now and purchased it from him.

      Yes, you know this and I know this, but most people don’t.
      EPA makes you waste fuel.
      All these “experts” speak their THEORY that “more power means more fuel”. They need to stop talking since they don’t know.
      The fact is like you say, proper timing and fuel delivery for EFFICIENCY, not for EMISSIONS.

    We had a 1982 LTL9000 Orange pumpkin with > 3 million miles on it. Just imagine the volume of fuel that passed through those 1/2" lines. Certainly no a virgin engine at that point but it blows my mind how much fuel that one vehicle has gone through.

    on my 2.5L TDI Van when the conditions are good it gets 25km per liter
    I drive conservatively, accelerate slow and I press the throttle as less as possible when I'm at top gear
    my top speed is about 60-90kph seems slow but that is considered "fast enough" to not cause traffic in the Philippines

    Pilots are taught that air drag increases with the square of speed. So, if you want to travel fast, gotta be streamlined.

    I don't know if you're aware of it but maybe you heard of water methanol injection. I have it on my truck I had it on the previous truck it helps fuel mileage significantly in my opinion because it increases torque by approximately 25%. it only works when you're pulling a hill. the water is injected into the intake manifold and a very fine mist it does two things it helps to cool the intake charge so you get more air in your engine and it turns to steam when the fuel Burns. it also removes a significant amount of heat from your engine. my exhaust gas temperature typically Run 200 to 300 degrees cooler I have found that I can lug my engine at a lower RPM without burning out my turbocharger. also when I look the engine at lower RPMs the steam pushes the Piston all the way to the bottom of the stroke. most people don't realize it but by the time your piston is down 120 degrees after top dead center you've extracted most of the energy you are going to get from that charge. the steam in the cylinder pushes the Piston all the way to the bottom steam simply doesn't quit pushing. snow performance has a very good system. I have a 15 liter cap right now my last dungeon was a 13 lb cat. that 13 liter cap on factory settings out pulled a 600-horsepower cat coming across California we were both running 80 thousand pounds and I don't pull him on Every Mountain grade with a stock 13 liter engine. I'm sold on it I don't even run methanol I run straight water it's very beneficial for an engine properly installed properly operated it will not damage an engine

    The main reason aero loading matters so much is that drag is proportional to the square of the speed. Double the speed, drag increases by a factor of four.

    I run a 74 A model kw with a 400 hp big cam set up at 525 to rear wheel hp. Prefco 212 injectors, 12 button, purple spring with A ported Pulse Manifold and a Holset 4 series turbo. 13 speed with 370 rears. Absolute ground pounder at 48 lbs of boost. Averages 5.7-6. Driving responsibly. Our new petes aerodynamic trucks are getting 5.2-5.5. With 40 plus years of technology I’d say we’re not that far ahead honestly.

      Actually we are “farther ahead”. Just the agenda has changed. We are farther ahead in reducing NOX gasses and couldn’t give a damn about fuel economy or power.

    Hi Josh good info. I run a Iveco cursor 8 330hp just 2 axles with a heavy 3 axle trailer. the other guys in the fleet run about 2.1-2.3 kml. I run between 2.8 - 3.15kml. took your advice about low boost pressure made a big difference btw. I can agree with you about the leadfoot thing I stick to around 85-88 kmh. 1 other thing I can add that does make an improvement is the distance of your trailer from the back of your cabin. I had the 5th wheel moved as far forward as was practical an makes a significant difference. now I'm running a dedicated trailer Curtain sider. would lowering the viscosity of gear/diff oil make any kind of difference? I live in Brazil btw. where we pay around $3.09-$3.25 per liter. Thankfully after we paralysed Brazil for 13days government caved in and gave a reduction of 0.46c l. Add this figure to that above and you get a part of the real cost! My boss pays $4.5-5 million per year on fuel. on a 30 truck fleet. It's taken about 3 years for him to finally start listening to me on ways he can improve his margins. Decrease costs etc. That's just by leading by example. The rest of te guys in the fleet are gradually getting the message through their hard heads. 2 thumbsup and keep up the good stuff.

      Lowering the viscosity of the oil in your transmission and differential will improve your fuel economy, but not by much. Less than 1 percent probably. Also, if you use a lower viscosity oil than recommended, you risk causing damage or excessive wear, so don't go lower than what's recommended for your truck. Hope this helps.

    The best thing you can do is spec your truck correctly! I have a w990 with 605 2050, I pull 105k from mid Washington to the West coast. Lots of hills. I speced it with 3.08 finals and meritor axles and I get 6.8mpg while everyone else gets 4.8-5.2mpg. I pull harder to, my buddy has a w900 with 605 2050 and everything else the same but has 3.58 finals, 105k on the dot as well and can't keep up and only gets 5.2. He has spent the money to ensure his truck is performing fully and it is, same with mine. Longer finals and more power is just better

    The cetane ratings very wildly at different fuel stops. You need to pay attention to differences in your fuel mileage and remember were you got the good stuff at.
    Engines running at lower rpms will notice cetane ratings less and you can buy cetane boost to spike it.
    When I used to drive a truck it wasn't that big of a deal, but now that I own a diesel at home with a smaller engine you do really notice big differences when buying fuel at different places.

    Been using diesel kleen in my fuel for over 20 yrs. Ceatine booster and bacteria killer... and boosts mileage 2mpg in NY duramax and almost 100 miles more in my 6NZ

    Best thing that I've done for my Ram Ecodiesel= GDE Hot Tune! Getting 31-33.5 mpg now! Dynos way more hp and rwtq. Still never smelled as clean a motor under full load on the dyno! Raising cetane with CenPeco additives did nothing for mpg.

    I drive a 2018 peterbilt 389 glider & pull a stepdeck. it's got a '99 model series 60 12.7L Detroit @ 500 hp. I drive this truck between 1500 & 1700 RPMs (when loaded) & typically drive it at 18-19 lbs or less of manifold pressure. I drive as fast as 18 lbs will get me. as fast as 75 & 80mph quite often. most loads are almost always either heavy or drag a lot of wind. the worst I've done on a tank of fuel is about 5.8 mpg, but typically avg between 6 - 6.5 easy. we run 48 state.

    Can you put turbo on any diesel engine without changing engine parts apart from exhaust manifold. Talking about a tractor engine here.
