I made designed and wired up my pedalboard about four years ago. I've made every mistake you listed today, and after getting all the problems sorted, I can say my rig has been going strong ever since. I've never had a cable fail after playing more gigs than I can remember.
I just got a 3 pack of those cutters…lol. Hakko 951 is awesome soldering station. I’ve had it for 11 years and zero problems. Heats up in a flash and tips last a very very long time
thanks for the feedback! I'll post on our social media / email list when the jig is done (I'll definitely forget to post here if I'm honest) @goodwoodaudio on insta / email list is on the bottom of our home page at goodwoodaudio.com
Thanks for this; you had some great tips (cable and advice). One question though, if making a permanently set board and you want your cables cut to length, is the aforementioned looping of the cable going to allow for clean cable runs, or is there better practice on a board where things won't be moving around and you don't want any extra slack?
That's why we started 'looping'... you get clean cable runs and the slack needed. Check out our insta... we do this all the time on our setups and it looks great.
I can’t believe how wrong I’ve done this. I’m an electrician specifically controls. Even though we never use solder. But because of this, I had un warranted confidence. I was putting the iron to terminal, heating, then dropping solder on the heated metal. Needless to say it wasn’t the best practice and I just always thought soldering was just difficult. I was basically soldering the way a plumber breezez a pipe.
This was a fun class a couple of weeks ago. I hope you do some more in the future!
I had fun too! Thanks Dan! I think we will.

Im so glad to hear I'm not the only one making those mistakes...although I feel bad for you as I know those mistakes are so frustrating in the moment!

good to know! 951. Love it. Good price too.
This is so good!! Would love to see more; power cables, TRS, midi.. thanks for this. PLEASE add a comment when the jig is available.

At least now I know I'd be totally useless doing plumbing solder! haha I would have taken my cable approach to it!
I’m just curious what size soldering tip (mm) and solder (.050 vs .032) you’re using? And do you use that same setup with your DC plugs too?
0.8mm chisel tip and for DC I'd use the 0.032... for 1/4" plugs, I use 0.05. Anything small (midi, 1/8", DC I use 0.032)
Hey where’s the best place to buy dual lock?
our parts store! ha. If you get a full roll, you won't find anywhere cheaper.
