  • This video shows you how to insert your 3D model into almost any location in the world in less than 10 minutes! All with only Rhino and Google Earth.
    Google Earth is a computer program that renders a 3D representation of Earth based primarily on satellite imagery. The program maps the Earth by superimposing satellite images, aerial photography, and GIS data onto a 3D globe, allowing users to see cities and landscapes from various angles.

    Thx this is awesome.
    A little advice:
    Most ppl do not need to have basics explained like how to get coordinate, where to point north or how to setup transparency.
    It was rather difficult for me to get the essentials out of your video. Which is:
    Type the earth location command, get the coordinates from GE, export it as Google earth file ... done.
    Most tutorials just waste too much time with basics and don't cut to the point.
    Still, didn't know you can export files for GE and import in GE.
    Thanks

      @@ArchiHacks at least you had your model already. Saw quite a number of tutorials where they literally started by opening the software.
      I mean, most beginner stuff is already out there one way or another, very complex things maybe effort a broader context.
      Time stamps also help quite a bit.
      Way too less are UA-camer utilizing them anyway.

    how did you put the google earth model in rhino ?

  • @undergroundmonorail
    @undergroundmonorail 2 роки тому

    Hi, I don't know if you're still reading these comments but hopefully you hear my plea :P
    When I try to follow these instructions with a textured model, the model shows up in Google Earth but it's completely white. If I take the texture off of the material and assign a flat colour, Google Earth respects that, but trying to apply a texture just gets it flat out ignored. From what I can tell from my research, it *should* be able to display textures, but it's refusing to do so. (And yes, I've checked 'save textures' in the save dialog.)
    I don't know much of anything about 3D modelling and this video was already a huge help, but do you happen to know why I'm having trouble with this?

    • @undergroundmonorail
      @undergroundmonorail 2 роки тому

      I've solved this, sort of! I have no idea *why* this works, but just by fooling around I managed to get it working.
      What you need to do is open the .kmz file as a zip file (it's really just a zip file with a special extension) and do two things:
      1. Rename the folder containing the texture images (I renamed mine to "textures", I don't know if it matters)
      2. Open the .dae file in a text editor, find the nodes that have the name of the model, a slash, and the name of the texture image. The name of the model will have any spaces replaced with "%20". Replace everything before the slash with whatever you renamed the folder to
      This *shouldn't* change anything. It's still just pointing the path to the folder. All it did was change the folder name and update the references to it. But for some reason, doing this got my textures to work.

    Nice one thanks! The only thing I think you missed was the scaling of the picture in rhino- you just eyeballed it because it was an example. But is there a way of accurately sizing the picture to the correct scale?

    • @ArchiHacks
      @ArchiHacks  4 роки тому

      I'm glad you liked it!! Not that I know if this is 100% accurate, but if you take the screenshot with the scale (one of the check boxes on screenshot mode), you can use the bar scale to get fairly close :)

    • @3kids4dogs2cats
      @3kids4dogs2cats 4 роки тому

      actually, it's easy to scale. Measure something in the picture using google earth so you know it's size. Then measure the distance in rhino. Use your calculator to find the ratio and voila, you have the correct scale factor.

    • @ben3000
      @ben3000 4 роки тому

      @@3kids4dogs2cats Thanks for your reply - I know how to scale, but the problem is this is still eyeballing it as the accuracy is still limited by the amount that you can zoom in on google earth. It's not a big problem, just useful to know the limitations of this process.

    • @ArchiHacks
      @ArchiHacks  4 роки тому +2

      If you make sure that your Rhino model is scaled correctly, it should translate precisely. If you're finding them way too small or big, try adjusting your project unit! Let me know if that works for you : )

    • @TimHalvorson
      @TimHalvorson 4 роки тому

      Archi Hacks is there a way to export poly lines from Google Earth to Rhino? I think a good workflow would be drawing that boundary with flat satellite imagery in GE since you can measure accurately in GE. Does GE measure tool take the distance following the topography or is it based on the flattened ground so the points selected ignore 3D extruded buildings and topo in GE? Your workflow mentioned also requires you to have known dimensions to size your building properly so getting clarity on the measurement tool would help a lot!

    • @polinapowers

      so after spending all day testing out dozens of export options i figured couple things that might help: 1. if you have block instances (your file was a dwg or some revit export) - explode block definitions, it will take longer for buildings to import into earth, but it will work. 2. if you have no blocks, try reparametrizing your geometry. purge the file and then export. good luck.
