I’m 6 months late to this comment, and you’re probably right for the most part. However, I have taught several boyfriends how to ride, and they said they LOVED my lessons. They complimented me on explaining everything very well and being patient. I know one of them continued to ride even after we broke up. Not sure about the other one…. But the second one I taught was a natural! He was in his 50’s and had never been on a horse in his life, but he was VERY fit from running, skiing (both water and snow), and other physical activities. He also had wonderful natural balance and rhythm. He was able to post the trot perfectly during his first lesson (I had him on a lunge line for the trot work) without holding on to anything. He was able to post AND stay in balance enough to hold the reins properly without moving his hands/hanging on to the horse’s mouth for balance. I was QUITE impressed! In fact, I couldn’t make him admit that riding was difficult until I made him stay in two point during the trot for several minutes duration, while reminding him to keep his heels down, eyes up, etc. He FINALLY admitted that it was difficult to do all of that at the same time, and conceded that riding was physically taxing! 😂 I actually ended up teaching him to jump small cross rails. If we hadn’t broken up, I think he could have gone on to do some small shows. I guess whether or not you’re able to teach a loved one/partner to ride depends on your level of patience and ability to make the person you are teaching feel comfortable and praised for their accomplishments.

Key is that you can't force anybody to ride.
Maybe let him pet some horses first or just give huggles. If he wants to ride, the great first time is just walking for the whole time. If that gets positive feedback, then continue on.
Snacks and small amount of bribery is recommended.

Pete, that was brilliant for your first lesson. You learned an awful lot of different skills. It’s all muscle memory. Feels very awkward at first, but soon becomes second nature.
30 years ago, I got my then-boyfriend, now-husband, to try a lesson. After he got off, I asked if he wanted to do it again. He told me that he preferred his racing bike because he didn’t like transportation that had a mind of its own.
I’ve never gotten him on a horse since. Even after we had a daughter who wanted to ride, he volunteered to do all horse-related activities, except for riding. So you’re well ahead of him! I know that it means a lot to Meg that you did it.
Spot is a perfect size for you because you are so long-legged. I am envious of the length of your leg. Equestrians all want a long leg, but mine are short.
Meg, loved this as part of Vlogmas!

Another great way to start my morning! I love Pete’s analogy of running with a beer 😂 I’m keeping that nugget for the next time I teach someone to post the trot

Well done, Pete!!! Epic job, that was so good. The flexibility and strength comes with time/work, and don't listen to any *ahem* experienced riders who seem to forget there are muscles that *only* get worked by riding, so no one who hasn't ridden before or hasn't in a while is going to be super strong with rising trot right away. I really hope we see more of Spot and Pete! Can't wait for the next vlogmas episode, too 😁
