My cat. I make her toys that smell like catnip, and guess what? All she wants is the string. I try making her beds and stuff but all she wants is to scratch cardboard. I think she would like the tree stump scratcher, because she already has one that's worn out.

Just one important tip. Never use "fabric" inside the shelter. Fabric will hold water/moisture/snow and the cats can freeze to death because of the cold blanket/fabric. Instead, always use straw. Straw is hollow and won't hold water or moisture, any snow will fall beneath the pile of straw and sublimate away. This is particularly important for shelters in very cold climates in winter. Straw will also hold the animal's heat much more efficiently than fabric but the important part is that it won't stay wet.
So, between the storage bin and the styrofoam box you should put straw as well?
rofllol255 you’d still put the shiny insolation lining but all the tutorials from shelters say to use the straw in between the container and styrofoam. I believe the straw will also help keep things cooler in the summer.

Recently, a stray cat has been wondering into my backyard. Well, for about 7 months. At the beginning, I tried being friends with her and I knew it would take time. My family never wanted me to feed her, because they just didn't want a cat. I secretly brought her milk and bread. One day when my dad was cleaning the pool. The cat rubbed against his leg and my dad is very allergic to cats. He gave her a pet and fell in love! His allergies never reacted to her and he was fine. Now my whole family loves her and we just started letting her inside the house!! I've never had a cat, but I want to give this kitty a home :) that was my story. Read if you like!!

If you want to make a stray cat shelter, but live somewhere that gets ice/snow, don't put fabric bedding inside. Instead, use straw or other loose material. If you've ever left a towel or shoes outside, you know why :P

It’s not that, your cats love the things that you get along with like your bag, play with your cats toy for some days and watch your cat get along. It’s just like the favorite ball that we have and play with, our cat will always go for that ball only

Did the stray cat shelter during winter bc I know a certain stray that I feed. She had babies in the shelter (I made it bigger by adding some extensions) and she and her babies all have homes now. Most of them with me. Okay, fine, all of them.
Hi Patty, so that you don't end up with the original cat's grand-kitties and great-grand-kitties, etc, call your local animal shelter and your county's domestic animal services to find out if they offer low-cost spay and neutering for feral cats. I do TNR (Trap, Neuter [or spay], Return [to the person feeding the cat]). My local shelter charges only $35 for sterilization per cat which includes a one-year Rabies vaccination. The very tip of the cat's left ear is cut off while under anesthesia in order to identify that cat as having been sterilized. I live in Florida.
Ahhhh my parents just surprised me with an adopted cat for an early Christmas present, while I was at my friends house they got her and all of the supplies from her, we named her Luna and she's so sweet!!!

As one of several scratching posts I keep around I made my own out of a piece of ash branch left over from tree trimming. Just attached it with screws to a piece of wood for the base and then secured the top end to the overhang of my kitchen island for added stability. It goes with the rustic decor of my kitchen and is easily and easily replaceable (I cut that branch into several pieces to keep) and plus it's kind of cool to see my indoor cat claw the heck out of an indoor "tree". Next I am thinking of making an indoor cat perch made from real tree branches.
2:08 This is a petpeeve of mine .... In several of these diy videos people are cutting in middle.. MIDDLE OF THE FABRIC. Why not few mm away from the seam or Something?

One time I went to the dollar store to buy wire coat hangers so I could make the cat tent, and I found an already made cat tent for $3.

I have made the cat tent before and finally had to call it a disaster. My cats only got in it a couple of times and for all of 10 seconds. They mostly liked playing around it, jumping on it, and sitting on it; causing it to be squished and go flat.

That window tray cannot be safe. I get that it holds 15 pounds, but if that suction comes loose, the tray, cat, whatever comes with it, potentially breaking your window also.

i’m gonna use heavy-duty suction cups and drill in 5 eyes instead of 4. My cat is only like 4-5 lbs so it should be fine

Made the Cat Tent from 3:10 for my cat Sox. I put a towel in the bottom as a comfort mat and sprinkled a little catnip over it and then put a small pile of food in the inside corner to make her feel welcome. She seemed a little sketched out at first, but I gently set her inside and now she loves it in there.

Ok, I only got as far as the ladder one and have to call shenanigans. The ladder alone is like $50. Rope is also expensive. The cat bed is another $15 and that lamb's wool thing doesn't look cheap. The rug might be cheap if you live by an ikea. So all the materials would be over $100. Why DIY something if you could just go out and buy one (and not have to reglue your freaking elmers glue constantly...)?
I live in Michigan and have made many stray cat houses, some similar to what you showed. The problem with a blanket in cold weather is that it will retain moisture then freeze, maybe to the cat's fur. Use straw, not hay but STRAW, (around $4 per bale) straw does not hold moisture, hay does. Pack it full without compressing it too much and the cat will burrow in and make a warm nest. Straw is also good to pack between the two coolers as it is good insulation. I'm going to try a couple of your ideas, probably the scratching post first..
HOLY SHIT. I did the first one with a larger stepladder for my 3 cats and they love it SO SO MUCH. My smaller cat, Dolly, likes the blanket hammock between the steps while my two larger cats, Frederick and Thomas, sleep in the bed above all the time. THANK YOU!!

Stray cat shelters usually need entry and exit points in the event something else wants to get in. Nicely insulated though.

true but if there are 2 exits it won't be that warm, also as the others said as well, if there is a second opening other predators might come from behind.. and also yea.. the opening is too small.. maybe there could be a second opening where it won't be cut from the upper side so it can close a bit but in an emergency the cat t be able t get out

Benadryl. Or just be around cats awhile and you'll get over the allergy. Plus if you bathe them once in awhile it makes a huge difference. I dont bother with a tub bath, just a wet cloth with a little pet mousse, scruff their neck and wipe'em down does the trick. Its best to sneak up on them while they eat 😻🛁

If you're going to make a stray cat shelter you should use straw not a blanket, that's what the humane society suggests. Don't use hay but straw is good
That stray cat shelter is great and all but what's stopping other unwanted woodland creatures (like skunks, ew) from moving in?
You'd really only make one for a specific cat, I imagine. Like there's a stray you've been feeding, but winter is coming and you want somewhere warm for her to stay. The cat's presence would keep other critters away. Ppl shouldn't just set one out, hoping some random cat will find it XD
My garbage bags are mint scented to ward off critters so I suppose mint essential oils could work possibly but I suppose a fox or stray dog could still move in

Have these people ever even owned a cat? You can’t use nails for the first one because it’ll hurt their claws when they scratch, and cats like to stretch out when scratching so the stump thing won’t work. Those catnip biscuits aren’t really healthy either.
That first one had other issues too- what about the ladder hinges? Um, ouchie? And you should probably cover the top in padding (corners = ouchie too) just to be safe
Idk, my cats have a little cardboard scratcher on the floor that they love and they don't really stretch out on it. We do have a cat tree that they stretch up on to scratch, but I don't think it's a requirement. I think they just like the texture of the cardboard
There’s these two stray kitties I always see running around my neighborhood. Now that it’s cold, I’m definitely going to make the shelter and hopefully they can stay warm😭 There’s also other small critters that hang around, so hopefully the cats get to the shelter before they do

On the first one, i like it, but i would have nailed a square flat board slightly bigger than the cat bed, to the top of the ladder before i glued on the cat bed. With it the way it is there, the cat only has the very middle part of the cat bed to comfortably sleep on.
People with anger management issues find it hard to resist the impulse to act out when they are angry.

Use straw instead of towels if you’re going to put the shelter outside and don’t plan on cleaning the towels every week :) towels hold water and the cold
In areas where it has wetter seasons, straw is a warm alternative to the fabric in a stray cat shelter. It stays drier.

All really good ideas, one thing though, don't put any fabric in an outdoor cat shelter. They will track in rain or snow & it will stay damp or wet all winter & cause respiratory illness. Put straw ( not hay), it will not hold water & is porous so it will hold body heat as well 💖👍
The ladder at the beginning needs a board attached to the top for support of kitty laying in the bed!!! 😕🐈💖💖....Other than that....I really like these!!! Especially shelter for strays!!! 😎🖒🖒🐈💖💖

It's not fur that people are allergic to. It's the dander (skin and oils in the skin) that contain a protein that people are allergic to. The protein is also in the cat's saliva so they spread it every time they groom.

A stray cat shelter, if left outside, should have two openings so the cat can escape if danger approaches, such as a coyote or an unfriendly other cat.
Wow some of them are really nice! I especially liked the tree bark scratcher, the food tray hanging thing and the tent made out of tee-shirt. The stray cat shelter is nice too, but instead of clothes, hay or straw should be used so that moisture isn't retained inside.

i think my most favorite was the last one for stray cats. that was a really cool idea specially for during the winter months. it makes for a GRATE little hiding place for them AND there kittens. specially if there looking for a place to HAVE them. its small and comfy and WARM. maybe a bit snug but it will work non the less sill there 8 weeks old or so.

I hope you’re joking about that... Some people build cat shelters for people who cannot have cats inside their homes (allergies, cat supplies like litter, etc.) and the cats can have some shelter from the cold.

One change, for stray cat shelter use straw for the bedding instead of a blanket. Cat can burrow in and stay warmer that way.

uh hi if you're making the cat shelter (or any house for cats) i have a protip for you: make two doors, the cat feels more safe if it has a back door to escape from if someone tries to attack it
the cats will more likely use the shelter/house if it has two doors
For wetter colder climates, it would be better to use straw for bedding instead of any fabric bed. As once the bed got wet and cold it would freeze and not keep kitty warm. Straw would drain the moisture and act as insulation keeping kitty warm.
