Hi Amy I just discovered you and so happy I did as you are an inspiration for my creative journey. Yes, please provide a video on the proportional tool and how you use it to scale up to larger canvas sizes. Many thanks in advance☺
That was fun. I'm looking forward to see what you think of the Sennelier oil pastels. I bought 3 to try and I found them to be too sticky for my taste (not that I am anything more than a beginner in oil pastels myself). I prefer the Mungyo because they are not quite as hard as some of the less expensive brands but not as sticky as the Paul Rubens or Sennelier. I am also very interested in seeing how you figure out a composition. I cannot yet figure out how to move things around so they are different than my reference photo. If I try to move them, I struggle with figuring out shadows and highlights for the new position. Finally, regarding Amazon If you are still within your 30 day return window, you go into your orders and initiate a return and just choose exchange for the same item. Then all shipping is free. I recommend that for the paper pad where the first three pages are unusable. If you are within the 30 days, no need for customer service.
I'm really excited to try them! I hope I like them! As far as the Amazon, I live in a very rural area. Round trip, its fourth minutes to the drop off. They used to have free pickup for damaged items but not anymore.... thanks for watching and their will be a composition video coming soon!

I got the same Bee Company watercolor paper at Walmart because it was so cheap and I wanted my kids to have better watercolor paper. Turns out I LOVE it to practice on. I made a full artwork using mixed media (mainly water) and it help up to all the water and such. Totally recommended by out of all the cheaper alternatives to practice on. Great items you got! I can't wait to see what you make and you're reviews on them all.
Oooh that sounds lovely! I can't wait to try it! I've been on the hunt for a decent but cheaper watercolor paper for a while now! Fingers crossed this one is the one!
You can fix the watercolor paint brush. Buy the “The Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver”. It will come with instruction on how to fix and preserver your paint brush, but what you do is take a cleaner brush then coat the brush with a heavy amount of the cleaner and let it dry. A couple of days later rinse the brush and it will be straighten. I hope they replace it, but if they don’t please try this method to fix it for your self. Sorry this happened to you. It is frustrating.
You’ll love the Luxarchival paper! Try it with your colored pencils as well! Makes them perform like pastels! Her other products are wonderful too! This was a fun haul! I broke down and did the Temu thing lol! Got a lot of academy and Baohong papers which are nice, some watercolor markers and other things. I would love to see how you do a composition from start to finish. Thanks for all you share! The Conte pencils have quite a few lightfast colors like reds that are hard to find in other lightfast brands. I like them for underpaintings or refinement layer.
Oooh! Someone else who uses conte crayons for an underlayer! Did you know you are the only other person who commented and said you use them? I was getting a little worried! It seems like enough people are interested in a composition video that I Will have one coming soon! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
I have a set of Conte à Paris 18 Colour Crayons that came in the cutest little 4x4 box with drawers that open at 3 levels from 3 different sides with red ribbons as drawer pulls. Hard to describe but it is really sweet! I haven't really used the crayons yet because I was afraid I would destroy the box! I will take your advice and try them for underpainting! Just discovered your channel and I'm loving your videos! Thanks!
It's a 40 minute drive for is so not great for gas.... oh well. Maybe I can try to save it. And I am so glad you are enjoying the channel! Thank you for watching!
Your videos have inspired me to keep up with my art process as I am a new creator. I would love to see a video on how you prepare and calculate for a composition with tracing paper. Your tips are very helpful
Finally got time to watch this video and it was definitely fun. I'll be interested to see what you think of the oil pastels - I haven't taken the plunge on a decent set yet but had been swithering over the haiya ones after seeing good reviews, but like you I worry about the light-fast thing. I don't mind using non light-fast supplies for my own sketchbooks or for something that would become a print etc, but I'd worry about selling anything original if the medium wasn't light-fast. Another lovely video that started off my rainy Scottish Monday morning in a happy way 😊
I feel the exact same way about the whole lightfastness thing. sketchbooks, I still don't care, but I used to do practice piece on cheaper paper with non-lightfast materials. Several times I made a piece I ended up really liking and then was really mad at myself for not using materials that will stand the test of time! And a rainy Scottland sounds lovely right now! It's been so hot and we've been in a drought all summer! Also, it's fun knowing people from all over the world are watching my videos! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
I just found your channel and I have watched a bunch of your videos. You are talented and humble. Im so glad that you are on here. Life challenges and discouragements could have limited you but you preserved. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Thank you so much! I was actually having kind of a bad morning and your comment made it a lot brighter! Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! I really appreciate it!
Ok I had to stop the video to get this comment correct. You can use a cement block wall to hang things on. I helped my nephew with the walls of his inherited family home it was a cinder block construction. We first used a small 4 inch grinder to create a small square flat space. We then used some of the advanced hooks from 3M that can come off easily. On one wall they wanted to hang a HUGE clock so I suggested we use a hook held in place with epoxy. We used quick dry epoxy and I said let’s put this in the exact middle in case you decide to change the clock out, they agreed. This works well even today the renovations are 8 years old and still holding strong.
I'm excited to see what you think about the Sennelier oil pastels. I love mine! The Caran d'Ache Neopastels (not to be confused with Neocolor I and II) are the other brand, that I know about, of oil pastels that have lightfast ratings and are available open stock. I think a video on the proportions would be very useful, if you can find the time to make it - maybe demonstrating it in a live? I hope you have fun with all your goodies!
We live in a condo and I tried to get my brother to make me something like that shelf because I really didn't want to borrow another power drill and I wanted to be able to take it down. Ended in failure so I might try for that.
I filmed the last one I did, using derwent inktense blocks for an underpainting. I haven't done anything with it yet, but I probably should! I do plan to do a lot more tutorials when the kids are back in school, and I have some uninterrupted time to create! So keep an eye out for the upcoming videos! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@winterwoodsstudio oh gosh yes there's no time when the kids are still on holiday. Ours went back last week and I'm just about fully recovered. I tidied my studio yesterday so I'll have no excuse but to get on with things now!🤣
@@terrilyon6825 That sounds heavenly! I love my boys so much, but there is never enough time to get everything done when they are home! Of course, if anyone asks me that first day they are back, I'll be blue and missing them and saying the house is too quiet!
As for the Neptune brush, put it in warm to hot water for about 30 seconds in a cup- do not dip the ferrule, just the tip. And try it several times till the brush hairs straighten out. May work out!
I bought the Sennelier oil pastel pad along with their specific fixative. If that was Blick they would tell you to keep that pad and send you a replacement!😔
There was a super nice wooden pastel sharpener box at Blick that I didn't quite have the money for but it's on my wishlist for sure! I'm sure you can do it other ways, but it had a pastel shavings catcher so it wouldn't leak, and you can make your own neutral pastels from the shavings!
The HAIYA Oil Pastels have lightfast ratings right on the pastels themselves. I've been trying to decide between the Mungyo Gallery and the Haiya so I've been watching any reviews I come across.
From what I'm hearing the haiya aren't the same as the munygo. I hear they're much softer. So I guess it sort of depends on what you are looking for. And decided to wait to get them until after it's not so hot. I'd heard too many stories about them melting in transit!
I am really looking forward to your upcoming pastel videos. I work in colored pencils and pastels, and there are so many watercolor videos on UA-cam, but not nearly as many in soft and oil pastels. I would really like to see your thoughts on the Art Spectrum Color Fix and Lux Archival paper. I would also be interested in how you use the proportional scale. Side note...I live in Tampa where the Mt. Visions are made. They are wonderful in my opinion. And one more random thought--I love Susan Jenkins's videos as well and learn so much from her. But I enjoy your pastel videos because your style is a little less impressionistic. I hear a lot of people say they want to "loosen up", but I prefer a more realistic style.
I'm so glad to hear that you like the fact that my art is "tighter" because I recently decided I don't want to fight it anymore! I am who I am, and I create the way I create and I just don't think I am great at working in impressionistic style and maybe that's ok! I'm still trying to find my place here on UA-cam as well so I appreciate you insight into that! Also, I'm a little burned out on watercolors which means I need to switch to a different medium for awhile! Thanks for watching and comment, Michele!
@@winterwoodsstudio A tighter style is perfectly okay and I agree that you shouldn't fight it! Everyone is drawn to different styles, both when creating art yourself and enjoying the art of others.🎨
If you love realistic style done with pastel sticks I recommend Emma Colbert Art. I don't see realistic pastel artists that work almost exclusively with sticks. Every realistic pastel artists I see mostly use pencils for precision
@@loati94 I love Emma! Although to be fair, she also uses pastel pencils for details too. But she does quite a bit of each piece with sticks! Which is very rare, you're right!
@@winterwoodsstudio Yes! She uses pencils for specific details and to refine some shapes but it amazes me how she can paint something so realistic and only use four pencils for touch ups. Like she says, her sticks are like her brushes and each one has a size and shape perfect for each stroke.
I think you will like the Lux pastel paper. A product I purchased had a 4×6 sample piece on which I did my very first soft pastel painting. I wasn't happy with part of the painting and ran it under water. After drying, I had no problem finishing the painting. I think it's great paper. Very nice haul. Wishing you well on the opening of your online shop.
Hi Amy. I think that a proportional composition would be a great tutorial. I hope you can send that damaged packed back! I would try it through the automated process. It is easy and painless...at least in my area. I take returns to the nearby UPS store and I don't even have to box it. I just open my Amazon app on my phone and it's scanned and my money is refunded however I want the funds back (unless it's cash - UPS doesn't do that). I am adding comments during your haul otherwise I will forget everything by the end of your episode. haha I bought the same Sennelier set! The colors are gorgeous but it is way too soft for me to know how to use it. . Then again, what I know about oil pastels would fit in a thimble. That's why I gave up on the pastel tutorial and got out the gouache instead - I just don't know how to get any sort of details with such soft materials. But since I am on the world's worst no-buy, I then bought the 72 set of Mungyo's in a wood box! I only purchased them in a wood box because weirdly enough, that was cheaper than the ones not in a wood box. The box is really nice looking. Lastly - let me know what you think of the bee jumbo pad. I thought it was a great find! I find that it invites experimentation and doing things I never would have let myself do on an expensive 100% cotton paper. I hope you enjoy!
I'm glad you got a good deal on the wooden boxed set, Tracie! I think I must have too because I wouldn't pay more for a wooden box normally! And your gouache painting turned out so beautifully I can see why you switched! We don't have a ups drop off that accepts unpacked returns and the closest ups hub of any sort is 20 minutes one way so 40 minutes round trip.its long enough that it makes me mad to pay for my gas to return something they screwed up... oh well! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Ugh...that's just wrong of UPS to not be consitent with its stores. I live in quite the rural area but have a UPS store less than 10 minutes away. Do you have any stores with Amazon lockers? We have those all over here. Of course, I guess things are different on the West & East coasts because that is where the greatest populations are. Even though I am in a very rural area, the edge of town (and UPS store) is only 10 minutes away.
I think it helped that I got some free supplies to try during that time from a few companies! I'm not sure I would have made it otherwise! Thanks for watching!
I've wanted to try them forever! Andrew Tischler (one of my favorite Oil Painters) uses them! For some reason I thought they were super expensive! I will have to check them out and see! Thanks for watching!
The pad of paper that had damage to the first pages was pulled from the Blick box not Amazon like you said but you might be able to send back for exchange.
The pad of Sennlier oil pastel paper was 100% from amazon. The Ampersand harddboard board from Blick had a little damage on the corner too though. Maybe you were thinking of that? If it was from Blick I would have already had it taken care of! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Watching your videos is a joy. I work mostly in pen and ink and colored pencils so I'm not up to date on all the various paints and pestels, but it's fun to watch you open the packages. I'm looking forward to giving the command shelves and hardboards a try. Amazon's packaging is absurd. I get a lot of packages from them, particularly books and paper pads, that are damaged. I don't even bother to contact them anymore but send them back immediately and reorder, or pay a dollar or so more and buy the paper at the local art supply store if they carry it. (Also a good reason to pick up a few fine liners😀) I'm always up for tutorials on color theory, techniques and composition, particularly with colored pencils and pastel pencils, if you ever feel like making any.
Pen and ink is my first medium and I am already getting ready for Inktober! Do you do inktober? I have a haul of inktober art supplies coming up in the next 3 weeks or so! I'm excited for it! I am hoping to do more tutorial videos once the kids go back to school in early September, There is so much more to do when they are home for the summer, I have trouble finding blocks of time to work on them. I wish I had an art store near me, but the closest thing is a Michael's and it's two and a half hours away! Thanks for watching!
@@winterwoodsstudio I'll watch for your inktober videos! September and October tend to be my busiest times of year and I've never made it all the way through but will try again this year. I have a particular sketchbook, inks, dip pens and fountain pens ready to go.
I have the 72 set of Haiya pastels. They have lightfast ratings and pigment info. I usually just go by pigment info. They're nice, though. With Amazon, if I have an issue, if I can get in a chat with someone, they will help me out. Bummer about the brush. I hate when that happens. I am on a No Buy August for art supplies. It's tough, but I am doing it! Hehe. Great video. Have fun with your new stuff!
Yep. I try to go by pigment info too, sometimes, though, depending on how the pigment is processed in can affect light fastness. Or at least that's what I have been told. It's nice the lightfastness is right on the wrapper! I love that! If it wasn't so hot here I might have just ordered them but I was worried about them melting! Thanks for watching!
Nice video. I’d gladly pay $10 for shipping from Blick’s! I just ordered a bunch of individual colored pencils from Dick Blick; there’s no free shipping if you’re not in the contiguous 48 states so I had to pay $30 for shipping! It would have been $35 but I I removed a 5 x 8 inch sketch book from my order.
Holy moly, that is A LOT! Yikes! I hear you though! Sometimes we just need what we need. I actually had to order some paper from Blick last week, and it was $24 and I paid $10 shipping because i needed it and I didn't have it budgeted to place a $60 order. Sometimes we just have to do what we have to do! I hope you loved your colored pencils!
It's only a guess, but it looks as if you might be doing a lot of pastel pieces in the next few months? 🙂 It's a medium that I'll probably not try myself, but I do love the vibrant results that it can give. So I'll be very happy to see all the pastel items put to use as the year progresses. You seem to have had a bit of bad luck with insufficient packing and/or breakages in this batch. The Blick one was a bit surprising (I've never had a problem with any parcel from them) but at least you know they'll readily put things right. Amazon is a different kettle of fish entirely and I now use them only as a seller of last (rather than first) resort nowadays - which in practice means almost never. I guess when you just want the one item, though, the Blick shipping cost rather tips the balance in favour of Amazon. Anyway, thanks for the video - hope to see the pastel stuff real soon. Best wishes, Brian.
Me too! They are sitting on my art desk waiting. I've had so much stuff to do on the business end of my youtube channel this week and last that I haven't had much time for creating anything! Hopefully I can carve out some time today! Thanks for watching and commenting again! I appreciate the support of my channel!
That would be awesome except the nearest Lowe's or Home Depots to us is two and a half hours away!😂 oh well. I'd trade that for our remote wilderness area any day!
You may have mentioned this, but if you are avoiding toxins and have trouble with the oil paint fumes, why don’t you switch to water soluble oil paints? I ask because I have never tried oil paints because of a lll the mess and fumes but I was considering trying water based oil paints as an alternative. Am I overlooking something?
I recently got some but haven't tried them yet. The overwhelming comments I get from my artists friends are that they aren't the same. I've heard they can be sticky, or a weird texture or have a weird translucency. Everybody I've talked to said I should learn to paint without solvents with regular oil paints, but it's HARD. I will be trying my water miracles soon. They are from cobra. We will see how it goes!
Cadmium is a heavy metal, which has toxic effects in humans if absorbed. It is used in pigments. Some people don't want to use it because they worry about absorption. The kinds in paints are less absorbable than other kinds. You want to be careful about putting anything in your mouth or inhaling dust (like if you sand a painting or in pastel dust). So when I use it, I don't have any food or drink in the studio, I were a barrier glove called Invisible glove, or actual Nitrile gloves if you're concerned. I also use a hepa filter right next to my easel when I'm using soft pastels.
Remember your question didn’t have anything to do with if you were selling artwork, it merely asked if you like to use light fast art materials. The majority of people don’t sell their artwork or it’s just a card or something and we like to work in our sketchbooks most of us would agree with you if it came to selling our work. You might needs to be a little more specific when you ask your question.
If there were commercials…I would NOT be here…I am premium UA-cam viewer, and I pay a monthly fee,…to watch any UA-cam video…AD FREE,….THANK goodness for that,
Same! I also have UA-cam premium, mostly because before that, my kids were watching a kids UA-cam channel and there were inappropriate ads! I had to explain what "manscaping" was to a 8 year old! We got premium the next day.

Thanks!
You can return damaged products, but if you're nowhere near a return store, it's not worth the cost of gas.
I am loving your channel!
Yes please to the composition video with tracing paper!
Oh good! I Can do that! Glad someone would like to see that!
Yes please do a video on how you use tracing paper and that thingy 😊 that calculates proportions for your compositions.
Will do! Hopefully I can get it up on the next month or so!
Please please pretty please do a video on the proportional gauge. It will help me a lot. Thank you.
Noted! It seems like enough people would like that that I will start working on it! Thanks for commenting!
Nice haul, I hate it when things come damaged. At least it's not as bad as Temo. Have a great weekend.
I can't wait to watch this later when I get the chance and then I'll be green with envy!😂
It was a ton of fun! And a lot of stuff I really needed, too, so hopefully it's still interesting!
Lowe’s has a drill bit that drills through cement walls. Just in case you really need to hang anything.😊
We live in a condo and I tried to get my brother to make me something like that shelf because I really didn't want to borrow another power drill and I wanted to be able to take it down. Ended in failure so I might try for that.
Would you do a video of your pastel process? I've not seen a whole soft pastel from start to finish (underpainting etc) or with use of washes etc?
@@winterwoodsstudio for sure it's a push me pull you feeling! I couldn't believe the silence in my house once my boy was at school!!!
Great haul! Thanks for sharing. I just love to see what people get! I hope you are feeling better today.
I'm so glad you liked it, Joanne. Thanks for watching! And yes I did better today then I had been previously, thank you for asking!
Thanks for sharing! Great fun.
Glad you enjoyed it!
As for the Neptune brush, put it in warm to hot water for about 30 seconds in a cup- do not dip the ferrule, just the tip. And try it several times till the brush hairs straighten out. May work out!
Good afternoon! I really appreciate and enjoy art supply hauls! 🎉❤😊
Woow can't wait to see you use your new supplies 🥰🥰🥰
I'm super excited to try them all!
I bought the Sennelier oil pastel pad along with their specific fixative. If that was Blick they would tell you to keep that pad and send you a replacement!😔
Woohoo! Fabulous haul! Thank you for sharing it with us! I hope you were able to get some rest!💜💜💜
I'm so glad you liked it, Melissa! And not yet, but hopefully tomorrow afternoon! Thank you for asking!
I'd like to see how you do proportion correctly. Love your videos ❤
The 3M/Scotch mounting adhesive is fantastic! I've had my role for 5+ years & the adhesive is still as strong as day one.
I really like the content pastels for underpainting and sketching, you can sharpen them to a point.
There was a super nice wooden pastel sharpener box at Blick that I didn't quite have the money for but it's on my wishlist for sure! I'm sure you can do it other ways, but it had a pastel shavings catcher so it wouldn't leak, and you can make your own neutral pastels from the shavings!
@winterwoodsstudio I just use a knife and a bit of sandpaper and a glass jar to catch the shavings.
Lovely haul look forward to seeing you use these items and what you create
Those command shelves are great, the stick lasts for years!
Good to know! Thank you! I can't wait to try them this coming week! Thank you for watching!
Fab haul Amy really enjoyed 💜💜💜
A spectacular art haul! Looking forward to seeing you try out all that cool stuff!
Hi I'm a new subscriber and I absolutely love your channel keep up the amazing art content ❤
Thank you so much 😀 and thank you for subscribing! That means so much to me!
Your welcome 😊
I would love to learn how to use tracing paper to help with composition!!!😊
Great! I had enough people request it that It will be coming up shortly! Thank you for the feedback!
I would love to see how that tracing paper and wheel go
I loved the video and your haul. Those oil pastels are so pretty. Definitely use them in a video in the future.
Thank you! Will do! I can't wait to try them!
Well done on the "no-buy" i dont think i would have lasted lol
I think it helped that I got some free supplies to try during that time from a few companies! I'm not sure I would have made it otherwise! Thanks for watching!
@@winterwoodsstudio hahaha yes that would definitely have helped lol
You should try Blue Ridge Oil Paints. Handmade by one guy and comparable to the best oil paints out there. Except they are way less expensive.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
hey fellow artist, I'm new to your channel.
Thanks for watching!
love you haul. I hate amazon . im in the uk and like Ritas Burman coloring books ...cannot find anywere apart from Amazon. lovely haul happy Art xxxx
I'm so glad you enjoyed the haul! Thanks for watching !
🥰@@winterwoodsstudio
I ope you like your Sennelier Oil Pastels, I like mine!
They have palette paper at dollar tree too
Not at mine :( Our dollar tree is awful for art supplies. Probably, not many people use art supplies in my area. It's a bummer!
@@winterwoodsstudio oh that is a bummer! I can pick you some up next time I go to ours if you like. They seem to keep it stocked!
Eager to know your thoughts regarding the Sennelier Oil Pastels!
Me too! They are sitting on my art desk waiting. I've had so much stuff to do on the business end of my youtube channel this week and last that I haven't had much time for creating anything! Hopefully I can carve out some time today! Thanks for watching and commenting again! I appreciate the support of my channel!
Please make a video with the tracing paper and proportion tool
There is one coming soon!
Amy you do know that you can buy hardboard at Lowe’s or Home Depot and have your husband cut it right??? And it would be ALOT cheaper
That would be awesome except the nearest Lowe's or Home Depots to us is two and a half hours away!😂 oh well. I'd trade that for our remote wilderness area any day!
I would like a video I’m a new artist kinda learning more everyday I would like to know proportions more
Thank you for the feedback! I will definitely make one! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
@@winterwoodsstudio I look forward to hearing what you think of them and whether or not they are a viable alternative
Sennelier is not light fast btw
Reach out to Neptune. They will handle it for you.
Amazon's customer service sucks!
Hi Amy hope your ok.can you tell me about cadmium and what’s bad about it please.
@@winterwoodsstudio thanks Amy I will bear that in mind.take care.
No judgment was meant! I hope you didn't take it that way! I was just surprised at the results. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I clicked on this video because the thumbnail kind of makes it look like you're standing on a grave 😅 To be clear I can see you're not but it is what caught my eye.
Ha ha! But also, Yikes! Definitely not what I was going for!!!
You should be able to get a refund on the brush- I hope you give h them heck about it.
I'll try! Thanks for watching!
