Nice work though mate. I would have taken the trunking right up to the edge of the boxing and only used one trunking for both cables. Only saying because you asked for us to comment. Also, I always use printed label dates for my next inspection stickers as opposed to a sharpie. Other than that......👌

Yes as you say Jordan it is sometimes just not practical to do a complete rewire. I usually replace the con unit, fit all RCDs or RCBOs if poss, do all the usual tests etc, check the accessories are in not damaged and leave the system in safe condition. Sometimes you just have to minimise the upheaval and cost.
Your idea about cleaning-up after yourself is brilliant. All trades people should do it.
Hi Jordan great video as always buddy. Had a similar situation myself with an elderly chap, his lighting had a major fault that couldn't be repaired. The whole house ideally needed rewiring but just replaced the consumer unit for an spd rcbo one and rewired the lights only. Had to use trunking for the switch drops too because too much mess chasing out as he was of ill health.

We had 4 of the old fuse boards like them , the client wanted them Changng down into 2 current consumer units absoloute nightmare job as 3 of the fuse boards where in one cupboard and the other one was the other side of the house , nonetheless we got it done
Are the elderly couple gonna plug the main fuse in while your busy changing the CU in the same cupboard 😌.

No fixings for the tails between the Supply and the Consumer Unit? Looks as if they are "free" to flap around or to be moved.
What will happen if the busbar touches the metal backbox will the main fuse blow

Is the voltage operated RCD not preferred anymore due to the fact it cannot isolate the supply at fault currents specified in current regulations for personal protection ( 30mA)?

I’ve still got a fuse box like that in my house. Changed the fuses for Mcbs years ago to make it a little safer. It does however have a separate rcd protecting it.
Are they still a common sight? And if so are they deemed as dangerous compared to latest standards? I think my house was rewired in 1980.
Wouldn’t it have been a good idea to mount an isolator where the VOELCB (voltage operated earth leakage circuit breaker) was? It would mean the next time someone (possibly you) is working in the consumer unit they can fully isolate it...
And to answer the why are VOELCBs no longer allowed: they require the fault current to pass through the earth conductor to detect the fault (so do not work if there is an alternate path to earth such as through a water pipe, or in a damaged flex on a double insulated device), and they introduce significant additional resistance into the protective earth conductor (which could mean an alternate path such as a water pipe is a significantly lower resistance path to ground). An RCD is just a better solution to the problem they were trying to solve.

Top work what do u charge for a board change Hager rcbo boards with surge protection especially a miniature rcbo. Are expensive. Off topic u and dss are both from Cambridgeshire do u guys not get on ? Or rivals ? As u shout everyone else bar dss and Thomas Nagy on the UA-cam front

Cracking job Jordan, only thing I'd maybe do differently is install a 100ma type s rcd and a nylon gland at tails entry point for the consumer unit. Keep up the good work!

The reason he pulled the mains fuse is there's no main switch to isolate the fuseboard from the incoming live and neutral.
Rory Ashton I’m a little surprised he didn’t just leave the VOLEB and use that as a isolator while he changed the CU. They double up as a 60A Mcb too. 3 functions in one 😎. 2 of them still good!

Absolutely to work safely and part of this means to work on dead circuits at all times unless it is completely unavoidable to do so, hence his removal of the cut out fuse. However, the question is does Jordan have permission to break the cut out seal from his dno to allow him to work on the de-energised supply to the distribution board?
If this was the case, I would rewire the most loaded circuits, like the kitchen, oven, hob, tank heater, etc (maybe non copper or thin conductors) and also circuits that are critical for safety. (eg.: not earthed where the earthing is an absolute must )
Earth electrode resistance was high as you took the measurement through the coil of the ELCB,
I would have removed the redundant Cooker Control Unit
I don’t think I measured the coil as I measured on the incoming terminals of the ELCB

That voltage operated circuit breaker could’ve had the earth removed then used it as a main switch for the installation.
Within our region, old tt systems like that which have a new head and new supply cable coming into the property are almost certainly overhead TNCS systems. The reason our DNO don’t connect the installation to the PME is usually down to lack of bonding.
Every time its a call to the DNO and only on 1 occasion they haven’t connected it to their PME terminal and that was because their plans said that PME possible on their lines.
Looks like bitumen tape. Used it back in the....ahem....early 70’s. It dates back older than that. When it was wrapped around bakelite, or ceramic connectors we called it a pudding joint.😂

Without knowing the details of your particular installation it's impossible to say if your electrician was being too picky/trying to make work for himself or whether there really are critical issues which can only be resolved by rewiring.
I would certainly suggest seeking more than one opinion if you don't have the knowledge to make your own assesment of the installations condition.

Did you use double flat cable entries on your compression glands, if so, where did you get them?
JRT Electrical I didn’t, but you can get them from wiska. Not sure if they do one that fits 6mm and 1.5mm
I think you’ve made the right call there. Your clients now have RCD protection and a potentially lethal circuit serving the cooker replaced, what you have left them will probably outlive them, and shouldn’t be the cause of their demise. Well done.

Voltage operated ELCB's will only detect an earth fault returning to the device and not parallel paths, also need at least 50 Volt between the outgoing earth and the main incoming earth to operate. You also made a mistake when testing the Ze with the ELCB in circuit as the voltage coil can add quite a few ohms extra impedance to the reading!

I think the crabtree VOELCBs short the trip coil when the switch is off so it wont make much difference to Ra (Ze).
how do u get ADT with that high 85ohm Ze(Ra)?
An earth leakage circuit breaker I think, Common in the 70"s retrofitted all over NZ for fire safety. Then about ten years or so later we got RCDS
Nice job mate, i notice you have said you do EV charge points, do you use one company like pod point etc or do you use all of them, also how much work do you get in that line, im contemplating registering as an installer but a bit concerned that it will end up like solar....
Conor Cummings yeah I do loads of EV Charging jobs, I am approved to install Rolec, Zappi, EO, Andersen, Schneider and a few others, generally I recommend the best quality ones which are Andersen and EO, or Zappi if they have solar and want integration for that.
I have gotta throw it out there..... But I think there must be a more efficient way of disabling and then locking out the main fuse instead of faffing around taking the fuse apart and then reassembling it again and further reassemble it when re engergising the system.

Schneider lisse are my accessory of choice. They look nice and have backed out colour coded terminals. The concealed neons are cool too. I hope you put the screw covers on!

If you don't like them at least hand them to the client and tell them to fit them once they finish decorating etc 😉 I like schneider because the double accessories come with two pairs of covers too!

Thanks for taking the time to make this video, it takes a long time faffing about to do I know. The question of bonding was answered after hanging in my mind all through. I hate it (!) when I find nothing's been bonded they can be long and treacherous routes. Ugh. And add so much to the cost of the job and make it look like a rip off to some people. God weren't those old DBs built well, like old Cryptographic machines. I like that Schneider cooker control unit, very classic. I wonder what you charged. That's quite a lot of work for one day, with testing and all, and that wall made of shite means I'd not want to piss about with it. I'dve probably put unistrut stanchions up to fix to and made a 2-day meal of it, probably charged about £650 all in, no £750, but made a judgement on that according to how much other work I had on. You're putting out a lot of videos, that's a huge amount of work Jordan. Thanks. Have you seen Dan's latest video? Can you believe the twats who put all that tongue & groove up with no allowance for expansion - whole lot'll have to come down and Dan wants that to have been the last day!!! Dont know the reg, im sure hager put up a video before somewhere saying that.
Should have bonded the water even though it’s a pvc incomer, the pipes after the stop tap are copper.
What difference does that make. There is no earth potential being brought in, that's why the regs changed. In my day the kitchen sink and pipes used to be bonded. Who does that now? It ceased to become a requirement under the 16th edition.

I watch pretty much all the spark videos on UA-cam and they've all come across installations similar to this and worse. However...... These installations have stood the test of time over decades, granted legislation and practices change over the years for obvious reasons. I'm not a domestic electrician but it just seems obvious that these type of installations this day in age will always look bad considering the kit/products you have at your disposal this day in age.

Great job. I would have charged them the minimum possible without them suspecting it was "a charity job". Plenty of profit from corporate, co0mmercial and the obviously well off. The feeling of going home knowing you've contributed a little to society for no gain is well worth it.l

As for the VOELCB, if the fault current does not return down the earth conductor, the unit will not trip.

My answer to why they are no longer used (scroll down):
A Voltage Operated Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker is connected in series between the installation exposed + extraneous conductive parts and the earth electrode. A fault on the installation causing the voltage of the exposed + extraneous conductive parts to rise above that of the electrode and mother earth causes a current to flow through the VOELCB and causes it to trip. This works providing there are no other parallel paths, such as a metal water/gas pipe or any other bonded extraneous part, where the current flows through them instead of the VOELCB and thus it isn’t effective. Another reason is a person coming into contact with a live part will not cause any current to flow through the VOELCB so it doesn’t give any additional protection whereas a 30mA max RCD can.

Five years as 10 years is from new install I think that's the general consensus .
I also put on my next inspection stickers 5 years unless it was brand new, it used to be 10 years but I'm sure its 5 years now on the 18th edition bs7671,I would have to check
Paul Tipton I go with whatever I think is best based on the state of the installation, in this case there were lots of old wiring accessories and the wiring was very old although still PVC so I recommended 5 years.
@@artisanelectrics Jordan I haven't done an Eicr for quite awhile probably over 5 years as I mostly do social housing electrical repairs ( except on a rare consumer unit change)with another electrician colleague on the Eicr's but when I did the eicr's I did the same mostly 5 years depending on the Age and condition of the installation or 10 if it's a couple of years old like you said it depends on how you find the condition.

When you look up rcbos, they say they can't protect against earth fault, what would happen if there's an earth fault?
I suppose what that means is if the main earth was disconnected then they wouldn’t work.
Rcbo is designed to protect against earth fault , short circuit and overload . So not sure where you got that info from.

They do protect against line to earth fault, and disconnect the line, removing the danger, regardless of the type of earthing system in use...

Hi Jordan. Whilst I think it unwise to show on film the ‘seal fairy’ at work it’s even worse to show you actively dismantling DNO equipment. Did they give you permission to do that? What torque value do they recommend? If there’s ever an electrical fire it could come back to bite you. Can’t you edit some of this out of the video. Hope you don’t mind the constructive criticism as that’s how it is offered.
He’s an electrician pulling a fuse, got a job to do at the end of the day. I’ve heard of dno lads giving out tags to sparks to seal it back up when done. Sure he would of tightened the fuse carrier to which was sufficient and I highly doubt he’s going to be the cause of a fire 🔥 get in the real world fella

@@richardwilliamson3624 It really depends on your DNO; SSE are mine and they allow Sparks to pull the fuse, and also have the procedure listed on their website
@@hahahahaha6412 I would pull the fuse (because I have permission to do so) and then my DNO have supplied me with a gadget. Dont know what it's called. Its like a butt plug (probably something similar to that which is up @Wrighty_26 arse) that then isolates the live parts of the cut-out. :)
