Great video! I've written my tips below.
    The good stuff:
    1) Visit one of the parks. Universal Studios Hollywood, Disneyland, Six Flags Magic Mountain etc. Try buying tickets online. For example, Universal tickets are cheaper if you buy them online, and they give you early access.
    2) Visit the Getty Center, it's free, but you have to pay for parking.
    3) If you visit Santa Monica Pier, visit 3rd Street Promenade. Santa Monica Pier wasn't that special IMHO. But 3rd Street Promenade was nice.
    4) Visit Beverly Hills, here visit the Rodeo Drive and the Beverly Gardens Park.
    5) If you want to see the Hollywood sign, either go to Lake Hollywood Park (Google Maps sends you to Griffith observatory). And if you want to get even closer, hike to 3390 Deronda Drive. There is a hiking path there which is the closest you will be able to get to the Hollywood sign. You can also take an Uber or Lyft if you don't feel like hiking.
    6) Visit Griffith observatory, it has paid parking and closes at 10 PM.
    7) Visit one of the museums, like LACMA (if you don't want to visit the museum, you can still visit the Urban Light which is outside the building for free to visit), California Science Center or the Petersen Automotive Museum (if you are into cars).
    8) Have a studio tour. You have one if you visit the Universal theme park, but if you want to get closer to the sets, you actually have to purchase an expensive VIP ticket. Warner Bros, Paramount Studio, and Sony also have a studio tour. Disney has one as well, but it requires a membership.
    9) If you are into sports, you can visit the Dodgers Stadium or the Staples Center.
    10) There are a lot of events at the Los Angeles Convention Center. If you are into gaming you have the E3 expo. If you are into anime you have the Anime expo. If you are into K-pop, you have the KCON. If you are into comics, you have the Comic Con.
    The bad stuff:
    1) There are traffic jams ALL THE TIME. So, if you are renting a car, you need navigation and will be in traffic jams a lot of the time. And a lot of people are ignoring the rules. Like driving in the car pool lane while they have no one else sitting next to them.
    2) Do not walk alone at night at Sunset Boulevard (we got threatened by a crazy homeless guy with a knife)
    .
    3) Sunset Boulevard and Hollywood Boulevard are full of homeless people. And the streets are dirty. Whoever is in charge of the city doesn't seem to care about this.
    4) Most old touristic places to visit are extremely overrated, however the newer places are nice. Venice Beach looks like it hasn't been taken care of for half a century.
Visit the Venice Canals or the Marina del Rey instead. Hollywood Boulevard is also pretty disappointing. Yeah, there is some good places to visit at these areas, but they're often hidden next to the deteriorated streets/parts.
    5) If someone offers you a CD, reject it. The CDs are empty. But they pretend like they have their own songs on them, and ask $20. Also avoid paying with your credit card at the Venice Beach tshirt shops. Some overcharge you (scam you).
    6) The street performers can be annoying if you don't like that stuff. It personally didn't bother me. You will also have people annoy you in a superhero costume to take pictures with them, and then ask money for it. So be aware of this. There are a lot of them at Hollywood Boulevard (just like at Times Square in New York).
    7) Cities like San Diego or San Francisco IMHO look a lot better taken care off (in LA you only have luxury places like Beverly Hills that are taken care of in a similar fashion while in San Francisco or San Diego the majority of the city feels like that, safe, clean, and the being taken care off). So, I had mixed feelings about Los Angeles. Like I said before, old touristic places look like they've been extremely neglected. So, if you have high expectations, you will be disappointed.

If you reside in North America. High HIGHLY SUGGEST NOT to fly in to
LAX. If much of your travel plans includes, Universal Studios,
Hollywood, NBC and Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank etc, fly in to Bob
Hope-Burbank/Hollywood airport. The drive to these places range from
5- 10 miles. From LAX, these places range from a distance from 17-27
miles. That is a very considerable cut in drive time/ride sharing/taxi
    money and time.

We love California! We miss it dearly!! We want to know since we both don’t have our own cars, and I (Dani) don’t like to drive and Channie can’t drive for personal reasons, is Uber a good reliable source to get around for a week without using too much money!?

    • @ChelseaMcGrath
      @ChelseaMcGrath  6 років тому +1

Channie and Dani yes I also do use Uber when I travel in USA. We don’t always hire a car for every location. When I was in Las Vegas I got a 15min Uber ride and it was only around $9 or similar. Very cost effective and fair pricing. Also from my experience a very reliable way to travel. You can view the car hired on the apps map and see the car, their licence plate and also their reviews and star rating. Also before you book you can check the total estimated cost of the trip from point a to point b x

When you stay at a Airbnb does the host stay with you?

    • @ChelseaMcGrath
      @ChelseaMcGrath  6 років тому +3

Cristina Orlando so there are different homes available on Airbnb. Some are private rooms you share within someone’s home who will be there. Others are rent entire home so you pick up the keys and stay there alone as if it’s your own home. Some places you rent you don’t even have interaction with the owners and you pick up they keys in a drop box (:

L.A. resident here: The Hollywood Sign is totally overrated. I feel if you see it from a distance, that's enough. Avoid coming during the summer, and the weeks before and after summer. Not only is it crowded, it can be hot. Better walking weather during the other months. Rain is more likely in the winter, but that is what umbrellas are for. There is a way to avoid the high parking fees at Universal if you don't mind parking in the metro lot on Lankershim Blvd. (it's now about $2) and walking in and out of the subway so anyone observing doesn't think you're in the lot for the wrong reason. After that, take the bridge across the street then the tram up the hill to Universal City. Just visiting Universal CityWalk, and not going to Universal Studios, is free. Nice to hang around for a bit, see a movie, or go to a restaurant. If you do take the subway, it's only one stop between Universal and Hollywood & Highland.
As far as taking a tour to see the city, I don't see anything wrong with that, especially if this is your first visit and don't have friends living locally to help navigate you. The city is big, traffic can be something you're not used to, and parking/navigating can be a headache. A tour can help you see things without getting lost.

I don’t doubt that the Hollywood Sign (among other attractions) in LA are highly overrated, but it’s important to note that locals will of course find it overrated because they live there, see it every day, and to them it’s nothing special. For people who live nowhere LA and have never been there, getting close to such an iconic staple is exciting! Just something to keep in mind.

I disagree, Venice Beach and the Hollywood Boulevard are the ones that are totally overrated. The bus tours are also wayyyy too expensive IMHO. Lake Hollywood Park (and the surrounding of the Hollywood sign) are actually pretty nice compared to the places I've mentioned before.

The Studios are not in Hollywood. They're in Culver City, Burbank, and Studio City. Hollywood is a dump, imho.
