For those of you wondering how to move your book around without destroying it (since you are messing with the transforms when you move it from its original position), make sure you have all of your book items in one collection, then rename that collection to something like "Book" for organizational purposes. Then all you have to do is hit Shift A (or click on "Add" at the top) and add a "Collection Instance", then select "Book". It will give you a linked copy of your book that you can move around and manipulate all you'd like. All you have to do on your original book is focus on when you want the page turns to animate, as the page turning animations are linked to this book. Hope this helps.
I recently did this and it was so easy to follow your tutorial :) Altough I had a problem with the Commotion Add-on, because the animation started with the last page and finished with the first. In this case you just need to select the Reverse checkbox and everything works out. Great Video!
This is incredible, I have so many ideas for this, you have such knowledge of blender, you should have more views and I bet you will take off soon as a blender genius. I think the commotion is something blender should have as default.
If you want to move the book without messing the animation there is a basic solution for that, First select everything related to the book, press shift+A and choose "Mesh" then scroll down and click on "Parent To Empty" This will recognize the parent tree then create an empty above everything without changing anything.

For some reason once I get to the gradient portion the pages don’t have that heat signature and moving the gradient doesn’t seem to work, using 2.8 Edit, found out its a bug in that version. Hope it works out on my home desktop Edit 2: Almost perfect, for some reason my animation of the pages was flipped so the bottom half was folding in rather than the top half. I just fixed it by simply checkmarking reversed in the Commotion tab before offset animation
Im getting stuck at 13:11 - the rotation of pages doesn't rotate their origin points and pressing ctrl doesn't change their movement... ** Edit ** At 12:11 - highly suggest anyone trying this tutorial to start the page duplications at the top and shift + D copy (the piece of paper with its empty), dragging them down towards the bottom of page along the z-axis (instead of starting on the bottom page of the book like the tutorial does) - it will make the animation much easier and way more intuitive later on in the tutorial.. Also, for anyone getting stuck at part 13:11, just add a location constraint to the page and set the target equal to the empty that page is hooked onto. It has the same effect as auto rotation with location and you don't have to mess around with the origins (as the tutorial does later)...
You are a STAR 🤩 this was so helpful and not just for making this incredible book but also this will help for so many other things I wanna make thank you so much💖💖💖💖
Another Jewel added to your crown. As expected, an excellent tutorial from you (I'm not surprised but still impressed) Thank you for all the work done to deliver it. I followed the complete tutorial and I'm in my way to get a really nice animation. There are few points I want to ask you about 1) I believe the 0.05 thickness of the cover is a little bit high compared to the total book depth so I think may be 0.04 which I used could be something to consider 2) I added a half circle (with a diameter equal to the cover thickness) at each side of the spine and fill it with a face then extruded along the spine length, so if you look at the spine from the front view, you will see a rectangle (same to what we have in the tutorial) sandwiched between 2 half circle extrusions. In the right cover half there is the same half circle face extrusion on the left side and vice versa to the left cover side, So when the book open or close, these half circles will fill the empty corners between the spine the the covers, This is very close to what your final animation looks like, Did you use some similar technique? Please advise if possible 3) Can you advise, Please the number of pages you used in the final animation? I used 30, Is this enough? 4) In case we have a soft cover book (or even a magazine like voque fashion thick magazine) do you think any changes are required? may be bringing the pages animation even closer to the cover animation! Sorry for the long comment and thanks again. I will send the animation as soon I'm done (I have still to add the lighting and a ground surface to the book). Cheers
Thank you for the really nice compliments! :) I'm going to answer your questions based on the number. 1: You can have any thickness you want. I guess it really all just depends on what kind of book you are going for. 2: Yes I did something kinda similar. I extruded the ends of the book cover near the spine to fill it out. Then I beveled both ends so that it is rounded. 3: For my final animation you saw at the beginning of the video I used 73 pages. Again this is personal preference it is based off of what kind of book you are creating. 4: For a magazine it would probably be pretty similar except without a cover. Just use pages and have them be much closer together. I'm not exactly sure how that would look. I would need to do some testing and play around with it.
@@BlenderMadeEasy Thank you for your reply and sorry again for the long question that required the long answer. I'm actually making the pages, one by one for the book (I made already 30 yesterday) that can be used for regular speed animation (No details required) as well as a slow one so the pages can be read. so 73 by 2 sides so 146 required. I will see how to break a PDF file to page images and then apply them to the material of the book pages, I will send you the animation as soon as it is done. Thanks again
Also for those doing this tutorial in 4.2 I don't know about 4.1 and before but the Book Cover Rotation didn't work for me and if i doesn't work for you either under Affect Transformation click on Legacy Behavior that should fix the rotation of the book cover if it isn't working :)

I followed the tutorial from the beginning, but at the 6th minute, if I turn the slice, as soon as I go past 45 degrees (with the left cover on top), the right cover moves instead of the left cover... I don't understand why.
It went well for a long time with 3.0. Once animating all the pages leads to strange behaviour. Shortly before 90 degrees (frame 14), the weight paint does not catch (as it looks). Trying the same on 2.93 works fine. This kind of differences can drive me mad 😖
This tutorial is great, but I have one criticism. It'd be neat if there was a way to keep the pages from snapping to the same edge of the book when the book opens. Right now it's just a straight line, so each individual page gets stretched when the book is flat open. Not sure if there is a fast way to fix this, but it would be nice to keep each individual page Plane to stay the same dimensions from when the book closes and opens. Also if anyone knows of a way to fix the Plane stretching, I'd love to hear it :)
Great tutorial!I I want to animate the position and rotation of the whole book while the pages flip, is there any way to do that without the constraints/modifiers going crazy?
The key is to make sure all of your book items are in one collection, and then create an instance of that collection (shift a, collection instance, "your collection")
thank you so much for the tutorial! this is just what i needed. one question though, the cover of your book are three separaterd objects. is there a way to make it single object without ruining the animation? thanks again!
Thank you! :) Yeah I thought about that. I think the only way would be to use an armature instead of constraints. I didn't really want to do that so that's why they are separate objects. If you know a little bit about rigging it should be pretty simple to set up.
Hi mate. I always get stuck around 6:00 my cover does not rotate correctly. I dont know why but the inner edge of the cover doesnt stay connected to the spine when I rotate. I have tried this video twice each tie getting the same result. Is there a pre-beginners vid. Thanks in advance. PS. Is a blender problem or a computer problem?
Amazing tutorial, thank you But I have a problem with texturing the pages. For example, this book has 90 pages. I use a 3-second video to texture these pages. This video is 30 frames per second, and a total of 90 frames, which is just right for on the 90 pages of this book So the problem is when I link the video with the geometry to the base color, it defaults to using only the first frame of the video to give all the book pages the same texture How can I automatically make each frame of the video correspond to each page of the book, so that the first frame of the video is on the first page of the book, the second frame is on the second page of the book, and so on, how can I do it? thanks
I'm currently having an issue trying to place each side of the page with different images which I got the right part correct but then the left part of it is very difficult. thou I'm using geometry node/Backfacing
Hi I know a lot of other people have asked you this question but I just need the specifics. How do I make the spine round like yours? I know you said bevel the edges but I am trying that and im not getting the result you got can you tell me exactly what you did?
For some reason fillping pages started from the last page after applying the offset, I just checked the reverse button which solved my problem on the commotion.
Great video, but I have two questions. 1. How can we make the plain for the sheets not to stretch? 2. Would you share how this book can be imported correctly in Ue4? Thanks in advance for the possible answer.
Nope xD. But i managed to get even better result (having ue4 in mind) by making the following: 1. Made a book cover that looked real (Geometry, materials) 2. Made a paper piece 3. Assigned skeleton to the book cover so it can open with the bones as i rotate them (like 5 bones) 4. Made like 5 bones for the paper piece so i can animate it in Ue4 to open/close 5. Smooth the assigned faces to the bones so it looks good when bending 6. In ue4 i made some sockets on the book cover for the paper pieces 7. Animated book to open and papers to turn over. 8. Assign every paper automaticly to the book sockets and putting the in a array(BPs) 9.I can now get the first paper from array and play turn over animation ;) Extra: You can even customize every page of the book

@@cassidycarson5305 derek elliott has a new tutorial on box folding. I feel like it has the same concept for animating the spine of the book. Haven't tried it myself but i think it works!
Is there a way to move the entire book cover (including pages) in an empty controller parent, so I can animate it in different rotations, positions, etc.? Plus how can I "cover" or "merge" the spine edge and the covers to hide the edges?
Actually I'm going through an animation, where the book fliping have to be shown, I tried so much to figure the method, I did cloth sim with the papers but it eventually goes wrong, I left it for future and wallah you solved my problem!
For anyone watching it now, at 8:55 When adding the keyframe for me there was no add keyframe button. Just right click the angle number and there'll be an option to add it there :) Thanks for the amazing video!!!
instead of manually moving the origin (coordinates ) of each page, just add a copy location constraint to the page and set the hook as the target. if someone wants to make a 1000-page book for some reason, manually resetting the origin from the viewport seems like a bit of an inconvenience especially if one needs to flip separate pages back and forth like a storybook type of animation.
I'm not used to the tool, but you definitely need to add some other constraints with this. Tried it and figured out the pages would fall "inside" the covers (at least inside each other) when the book was open, since their origin is on the spine.
Bit of advice for anybody wanting to have good Normals - Solidify the original copy of the page before carrying on with this - have a thickness of 0.00001 m or something, just so you don't have to worry about backfaces. Just had to do it for 76 pages because I couldn't be bothered starting from scratch again (probably would have been faster in hindsight but oh well!)
Lovely tutorial! However being a blender newbie I'm stuck on how you filled in and rounded the edges of the book spine gaps not to be so sharp when applying the book cover texture on top. TY :)
Nice tutorial.. I was wondering if there was any benefit to using Alt D instead so you're not adding more tapology to the scene to help with rendering times and for lower end pcs/potato-tops? thank you!!!!

but when I offset the animation, the last pages are coming before the first page
How do i add animations in the pages and how did you end up making the spine of the book so Smooth
Just right click the angle number and there'll be an option to add it there :) Thanks for the amazing video!!!
u can delete the cube to place it over again... good job
Thanks for the video, but I want to know how can I export this to a fbx file?
0:17 deletes default cube
0:21 adds a new cube
w h y
Because it’s the RULE
You need to start dubpicating pages from top, otherwise it seems really weird
Please commotion addon isn't installing on my blender 3.0
How do I fix it please
You know it is a thing in blender when we delete the default cube and add in another cube
instead of manually moving the origin (coordinates ) of each page, just add a copy location constraint to the page and set the hook as the target.
if someone wants to make a 1000-page book for some reason, manually resetting the origin from the viewport seems like a bit of an inconvenience especially if one needs to flip separate pages back and forth like a storybook type of animation.
Can you show this steps your channel
I'm not used to the tool, but you definitely need to add some other constraints with this. Tried it and figured out the pages would fall "inside" the covers (at least inside each other) when the book was open, since their origin is on the spine.
Bit of advice for anybody wanting to have good Normals - Solidify the original copy of the page before carrying on with this - have a thickness of 0.00001 m or something, just so you don't have to worry about backfaces. Just had to do it for 76 pages because I couldn't be bothered starting from scratch again (probably would have been faster in hindsight but oh well!)
You can copy modifiers to all selected next time to avoid starting fresh in the future. Word of advice! 😎
Lovely tutorial! However being a blender newbie I'm stuck on how you filled in and rounded the edges of the book spine gaps not to be so sharp when applying the book cover texture on top. TY :)
Did you solve the problem?
@@michaelalando no sadly, it would've required me going back too many steps so i had to drop this tutorial :(
@@victoriaxpoison Sorry about that. Holler whenever you're taking it on again. Cheers!
Hey, your videos are awesome! May I ask for you to recommend some free apps/websites to create a ready made animation? Thank you.
the intro was nice 😂 first of all delete the default cube and add a new cube🤣
Greate Job
13:57~ I can't find the orange bar, so my 30sec key frame's form of the pages are so crooked. What should I do?
Thank you for your awesome video!!
no need to snap bro use limit rotation set it Min -90 max 90 and you are done
Nice tutorial.. I was wondering if there was any benefit to using Alt D instead so you're not adding more tapology to the scene to help with rendering times and for lower end pcs/potato-tops? thank you!!!!
nice video but just 4.4k likes we should like it
