As my Mother likes to say "You made the right mistakes." Mistakes are how we gain wisdom and you made some good mistakes early on and applied what you learned from them to get where you are now. And now you are sharing them with us so we can learn as well!

Exactly! we learn from our mistakes and move on. I wish I could talk to myself in my 20's, I am in my 50's now but I would be more candid. Be responsible, save your money, don't lend, manage your finances. I never did anything mucho bad but I am much smarter.

Sell those jeans, there’ll be someone who’ll want them, even with a little hole, and even if you don’t get a lot of money for them, you’ll get something to put towards a pair that fit. Sell that Coach bag too, if you only use it very occasionally, then a cheap, smart bag will do just as well, and won’t have the bad memories associated with it.

I bought an apartment back in the 80s. I listened to other people telling me I would make a fortune. After I bought it interest rates went up to 20%. All my income went into paying the mortgage. I owned it for 10 years and in that time developers bought up many old houses in the area and built apartment blocks and flooded the market. After 10 years my old apartment was now worth hardly more than it cost me.
After all expences taken into account I made $4000, that's a bit over 1 dollar a day for the time I owned it. I would have been 100k better off if I'd left my money in the bank in my savings account.
It is false that you always make loads of money on real estate.

I'm a 40 yo female, was married for 12.5 years. I'm 4 years out of my divorce now. Worse time of my life. I fought hard to save my marriage, even after the separation I was still fighting to save it. I was madly in love with my husband. My heart was so broken. I cried night and day, even had to take 1 year off work. I was so sick from the stress and trauma that I didn't think I was going to survive it. The best advice I got was to accept and surrender. I stopped fighting to save it, then accepted and surrendered to my situation. That's when the healing began. I started focusing on healing the trauma, my health, and surrounded myself with friends and family. Be patient with yourself. Stay present, and take it day by day. Focus on putting one foot in front of the other. Everyday that you get up is a success. It might seem so far away from being on the other side of this, but you will get through this. I promise you, the pain gets easier with time. I honestly never thought I could get over that hurt. But I did, I survived...and so will you. Hang in there. Sending you strength.

The worst decision I made was moving to Arkansas during the 2020 covid crisis. I was going to live "rent free" in tiny house on what I was told to be my property. It cost me more than I could afford. Too many mistakes because I did not know myself well enough. The most expensive camping trip I have been on.

As far as the jeans go… check with a local dry cleaner. Sometimes they do mending or repair. Get them to slice the sides open along the seam and sew in a black satin ribbon. That will get u the size up that you need. Ironically they will also match your mistake purse for an ‘elevated’ casual look. I like the idea of holding on to them as a reminder not to make the mistake again but you could at least get some use out if them.

The worst financial decision I ever made was to pay for and actually go on a cruise with people I did not know well and did not really care for all to impress the guy who was organizing the whole thing. But I was so miserable the whole time and questioning how I could have possibly made such a horrible bad decision to waste my money!

When I regretted mistakes like this my Mum reassured me “At least you’re not making the same mistake twice.“. That was true so luckily I learned things. However, I have learned one biggie that you didn’t mention. Never, under any circumstances sign your name to anything (contract, loan, co-signature etc)that involves another person. Don’t sign on for a debt that you aren’t 100% sure of (ex. a spouse wants to buy a motorbike on credit and needs you to sign a loan app). Or, do not enter into a business with another person (even a spouse) if you have any trepidation at all. I have learned this the very hard way. Please can you do a video about the implications of cosigning (on your credit profile, on your relationships, on your future purchases). Hand in hand with this is not lending money unless you are willing to gift it to the borrower.

The house mistake... I can relate. My husband's dream was to have a new construction house. We found new development that was being built in a town that I wasn't particularly crazy about. I kept my mouth shut because I wanted my husband to get what he wanted because he works so hard. We had to put our house up for sale in order for the builder to let us pick our lot. Our current house sold in 6 days and we were excited.
A couple days later our lawyer called and advised us not to proceed with the build because something was fishy with the builder. We couldn't back out of the deal because you know how THAT goes. We had originally figured that we would rent something for the 6-12 months it took to build, but now we had to find a house!!! We found one, but the sellers hadn't found a house yet so we had to wait pn them. We waited for a bit and they found a house, but it was going to be 2-3 months until they could close. We don't have any family and nobody else we could stay with, especially not with our 3 cats. Time was ticking and we already pushed out the closing by a month. Our buyer refused to wait any longer. We needed a short term rental QUICK which was next to impossible to find. We were about to be homeless. Talk about a nervous breakdown!!!!! (If you ever feel like talking about that, I'd love to hear it because I've been there!!!)
Anyway, we finally found new townhomes right under the wire that were being rented about an hour away from where we wanted to be. We talked the manager and he agreed to let us rent month to month. I was finally able to breathe!
Had I just had opened my mouth and said I wasn't feeling the area, we wouldn't have ended up in that mess. My husband was also unhappy I didn't say anything about not liking the area. He told me to never bite my tongue again when it comes to something so important!

I was in car accident as a kid, and handed that money at 18. While I didn't do anything wild like go on mad shopping spree, etc, I did do things like go to school out of state and just basically waste the immense opportunity I had on tuition, rent and eating out. I am upset with myself but also like, wtf parents, why didnt ANYONE TELL ME ANYTHING?? I basically look at as if I did same as taking giant student loan, a mistake many college kids make. There were a lot of circumstances at play, and it is what it is. I also remind myself that probably if I HAD tried to invest then I'd have ALSO made some big mistakes. I only figured out the method of low cost index funds at a low cost place like now, 20+ years older, (cringe) so 18 year old me definitely had no chance. Financial regrets are really hard to process . I blame lack of youtube then! :D

The house thing may come good in the long run. Just on buy once cry once, in the UK we have a similar saying "Buy cheap, buy twice." I can relate to the jeans thing but with me it's shoes. I have bought several pairs that rub my right little toe several of which have ended up in charity shops - I always thought I'll "wear them in" - amazingly this almost never works - if an item of footwear isn't comfortable from the start it will likely never be.

My worst financial decision was using most of my paychecks for an entire year to buy clothing from where I worked at. It was around when I first started working, it was a relatively pricey retail store where jeans would be minimum 100 dollars which was something I never had the chance to wear. What justified me buying all these clothes was that they were good quality, which is still true. But...a lot of the items I got I rarely ever wore. To be fair, I was still unsure of what my style was at the time and still currently, but that experience did help me figure out items I would actually wear again and again. I have definitely learned a few lessons thanks to that! Love your videos and remember to be kind to yourself :)

Dude. Sell the purse and the ripped jeans - remove their negative presence from your home. You HAD to buy the cheaper couch - a better couch wasn’t an option at the time. I wore a retainer and my teeth still shifted. And the house fiasco involved a ton of bad luck during a crazy moment in real estate history. I wish I could help wipe away the regret and self-blame that you carry. 🤗🥰 Onward and upward! You ARE smart - and human, which is why your subscriptions are increasing so quickly. 🙌😃 (And why I started back at your first video to make sure I see them all to gather your many pearls of wisdom.❤️) 🙂Wendy, Guelph

You could totally sell those jeans even with the flaw. Since you paid less than they are actually worth you might even make your money back.
My two worst mistakes were combining all the finances when I got married and then living above our means. When that relationship ended I had no savings and a lot of debt. Took me years to dig myself out. The one good thing to come of that is that I am now a very mindful consumer and will always keep my own accounts.

I help with expenses of course. I have a lot of credit card debt. Now I borrowed money to help pay other debt. BIG MISTAKE!

I moved into an apartment which already had two huge, ancient, fold-out couches. After way too long- about twenty years- I finally got so sick of looking at them that I spent an entire day tearing them to shreds (I could not get them through the door, I have no idea how they got in there) and hauling the pieces to the curb. I got a very nice recliner and rocking chair off Facebook Marketplace during COVID. Much, much better and I'm annoyed I waited so long.

Hi Nicole, congratulations on 100 videos and 20k subscribers. I'm sorry to hear you have had a break down. I had a severe break down a couple of decades ago. It was a really tough experience at the time and was the result of PTSD but also feeling stuck in some difficult circumstances. Now that I have the benefit of perspective, I can see that this experience was one of the most positive experiences I have had as it taught me so much and resulted in enormous personal growth and new insights that have improved my life. Regarding mistakes, everyone makes them but it is what you learn from them that matters. I have heard it said that the most successful people have made more mistakes than other people. Daring to try can often result in mistakes but is also the path to greater success. I appreciate your honesty and humility.

I hear you on the house. I bought one while in the middle of a total rehab of my existing house (insurance water claim). I bought a total fixer upper that needed a lot of infrastructure done to begin with, along with its own water damage and alot of other issues. I finally put my first house up for sale while working on the new one and had two mortgages for about 6 months or so. It was nerve wracking! In the end i stopped paying on the original while having a buyer who was being a problem. What should have been a one month sale turned into 6 months or so! I was ready to just walk away from it if i had to. Most stressful time of my life. thankfully it all worked out though i am still working on my house a little at a time 6 years later. I only do cash which really slows things down.

Mate, that was a brutal lesson to learn!
I guess lessons that I’ve learned, years after the events, are to start investing when you’re young and to control your investment costs. I did 6+ years in the British army, when essentially all of my pay was my own because food and accommodation was deducted at source, but when I left I had about 3 months pay in my pocket and two cars in my parents garage. What a waste! Now at 50 I’ve finally taken control of my pension, I dread to think how much I’ve lost in fees and inappropriate investments over the last 25 years. I’ve got an offer in on some land at the moment, but if that doesn’t go my way I think I’ll just focus on a retirement age of about 62, and do more cycling as my hobby since it’s free
I hope my kids will continue the good start they will get when they start work. I started pensions and ISA’s (UK tax free savings accounts) for them when they were babies. I think with the massive wealth transfers that are taking place right now they’ll need all the help they can get 🙁

  • @heatherhawkins7808
    @heatherhawkins7808 Рік тому +18

I think the reason why so many are impressed with you is that you have a very low percentage of bad financial decisions compared to most people. You generally seem to take a systematic approach to financial decision making which increases the odds of making good financial decisions (obviously the house decision wasn't made in your typical way). The majority of people do not take a systematic approach to decide making and this causes a lower success rate. Anyways, the absolute worst financial I made was marrying an abusive man at a young age and moving in with his family. He didn't allow me to complete my post secondary education. I took full-time care of his abusive mother who suffered from Parkinson's and fibromyalgia. Managed her medicine, physio, medically appointments, the 4000 sq home etc for 7 years. Worked for nothing at my husband's business for 5 years while he put everything in his name alone. My kids were taught to abuse me as well. It took over 4 years of court to get out of the situation and a lot of money. Left with no career and no resumee. not to mention the psychological/emotional damage.

The worst financial decision I ever made was selling my house I had for 36 years about 5 months before real estate exploded and could have gotten an extra 200,000. That hurts real bad. I was only 24 when I bought it. My only house, lived in it for 36 years, getting older, wanted to downsize, then the market EXPLODED, 5 months AFTER I sold it. That hurts bad. But I have my health and that's all that really matters. Health is more important, right? 😣

Mostly new Gym clothings coz when i got painful back, i stopped my membership and never go back even i had already recovered. They've been in my closet for more than 6yrs untouched 😅
I purchased too a house and lot in impulse last 20yrs ago, paying high interest rate, community not yet established and too far my work and where i was living. But recently i realized how much the area has developed and i feel the big mjstake of buying a single detached then is actually a good decision as how u wont be able to find a better place if i just only save my money to buy, mostly now are townhouses with restrictions in ur own homes, and limited yard space. I may add, buying a lot of plants (from succulent to veggies/ herbs) that all died. Now im caring for an indoor plants, a lot again died but this time some are surviving, i can declutter all but it's diff to declutter /maintain minimal with these plants

Your honesty is refreshing. My biggest financial mistake was taking on student loan debt. Didn't even pick a decent major and have yet to ever even use that degree since I don't work in anything related. Dumb. Also once upon a time I purchased a brand-new truck at too high of an interest rate, and that too was very, very stupid and took years to recover from.

Great video Nicole and congratulations on reaching 20K subscribers! As for whether or not you are smart - I’d say you have & show intelligence, you are honest and can be shrewd in dealings with others and you are clever and witty. All that adds up to smart.
My biggest financial mistake was investing in mutual funds with an advisor who talked circles around me but who I thought was “all that and a bag o’ chips” because he had monogrammed shirt cuffs and fancy cuff links. I got sold the bill of goods from my parent’s generation - bankers have our best interests at heart and are smarter than we mere mortals. Oh so wrong - I still beat myself up regularly over that decision. Roboadvisors and online brokerages didn’t exist when I made that mistake.
It’s unfortunate that you had to go through such a pummelling when you bought your current house. It’s hard to weather a storm like that on your own - you are one tough cookie. So glad you’ve come out the other side and can keep on sharing your stories. Looking forward to the Q and A.

One of my financial regrets is spending almost $200 on a Johnny Was sweater. It's a medium and I wear a small. So it doesn't fit very well. I shop at thrift stores mostly and if I'd have found it at a thrift store I'd have been thrilled. But now I look at it and think it doesn't give me commensurate joy. But I can't get rid of it because it cost so much. It doesn't spark joy, it sparks cringe.

Just found your channel and am laughing about the turd couch 🤣. Not sure about Canada, but in the US, most furniture stores have 0% interest credit cards for like 2-5 years. I bought my couch back in 2011 that way and still have it (and love it!). It did need a $200 spring repair a few years back. Money very well spent.

Despite your sharing of some of the 'financial mistakes' you've made, what's most important is that we learn from them. You are very self aware and your ability to 'overcome' those financial mistakes, reflect and grow is amazing. You should be very proud of where you are at!

Wow!! Just started watching your videos and your right .....I am decades older than you but overall you are one of the most level headed thirty year olds I have heard speak in decades. Your house experience seems average for the times. But the house market today seems much better. The younger generations can take awesome lessons for you! In my generation we call that a starter couch. Your grown up couch is on the way!! Hahaha. It's refreshing to listen to you and makes me think there is hope!! I am retired these days .......... in the South Eastern US. In the mountains!! Bought land and a nice house. No mortgage , low taxes, older vehicles, and nice people and area. Retirement heaven for me and time to ride my motorcycles and tinker with vehicles.
Your future is bright!! Your attitude is great!
You are doing wonderful for the world today!! We all make poor choices in life but learning to roll with our choices and make better decisions in the future!! Life is a learning experience. There is no plan or owners manual!! Do you know how to make God laugh?? Tell him your plan for life!! My plan even made me laugh !!
Keep up the good work!! 👍
    Cheers,
    Rick in Ole' Virginny!!

Life lessons and growth often come with hard knocks. We all have them. Some big some small. You learn more from mistakes then you learn from what goes right. What makes a person is how they deal with it. Seems like you are doing fine, and it will all pan out. Do not be so hard on yourself. Give yourself some grace. I have done that with clothes. Done that with furniture too.

I just found you so am binge-watching (and I know this is a year old) BUT just know going into Invisalynes that it may cost you after you're done. I had a similar tooth situation, but to ease your mind, after 2 years of religious retainer wearing, the ortho told me I was 'done'. He said there'd be some shifting, but it was ok. Fast forward 30 years and my teeth are definitely shifting and I got invisalynes. When I finished, they mentioned I would need retainers, but surprise: add on cost. Then after a couple years (you get 2 retainers for the cost) I was then told they 'loosen up' and I"ll be buying replacement plastic retainers for life. Every couple of years or so...boom. Another 300 bucks. So just know going into it. for me, it's an ongoing cost.

Hey Nicole - You are smart because you have done great. Everybody makes bad decisions. Next time you want to sell your house and buy a new one put in a clause that states the purchase of your new home will only go through if the one you have on the market sells. That would have prevented you from being put in the situation that you were in. Just remember that for the future because things can change in an instant like they did for you.

Great video and good advice as always. It’s a really shame that good financial management isn’t taught in schools here in the UK, and I’m guessing not in US and CA. So many people make the same mistakes with money in their earlier years because money is thought of as something to be spent rather than a path to financial security and freedom later in life. I wish I had viewed money differently in my 20s and 30s and had known what I know now I’m in my 50s.

Infortunately, I was not ready to learn from the internet earlier and nobody tought me so it is what it is. I wish I knew about all of this in my 20s as i started working at 16 and, at 18, I was working full time.
