  • How To Increase Honeybee Population Going Into Winter.
    The secret to increasing the honeybee population into winter is to feed feed feed. Ultra bee pollen, and 2 :1 sugar as long as possible, then put dry sugar. Honeybee population will also increase by killing all the Veroa mites with treatments, kill off most of the hive beetles with beetle barns, put on entrance reducers, make sure honeybee hive is tilted forward, make sure the winter honeybee hive is ventilated.
    Beekeeping news is Brushy mountain bee supply is going out of business, and Kelly bee is merging with mann lake bee supply.

    Well, regardless of one's opinion, the video was not boring if you love working with Honeybees. Hence all the questions for the newbies to the hobby or honey harvesters. This is the way I see it with pollen in winter. If you were living in a wooden building with little insulation and it's freezing cold out you would need plenty of protein to survive. If not you wouldn't be able to go out and obtain your protein to ensure survival. I would bet this lack of pollen is why a lot of colonies are failing. I've seen on different channels of failed hives from overwintering and when they pulled the frames out, there was honey stores but absolutely no pollen stores. These hives had been treated and feed healthy stimulates. Mite counts were checked and near Zero, no hive beetles and tests showed no viruses. But they didn't catch by observation there was no pollen stores. When I suggested that is what killed them, and the bees were dead in the brood box, I was criticized by them stating you don't feed them pollen late in the season. Oh well, but mine produced brood into the first week of January and it a cold winter here. When late February rolled around I already had swarms to catch. And David did state it depends on your geographic area. But I know one Beekeeper that gets replacement brood into December by doing this and the only colony he lost was due to moisture. Just try it on yours and see the difference. Coloraic intake is vital to every creature in extreme cold weather. Just saying!

    My girls here north of Nashville are still bringing in pollen from somewhere on the warmer days. I have also noticed a decent build up of numbers in the hives. I was worried because I saw queen cells and was forded to do a late split in Late September. The original hive ended up splitting itself anyway so my attempt to prevent it was in vain. Yet both colonies are now very strong.

    I wish it was 60 degrees here around Baltimore Maryland. It snowed four inches this past Thursday, but it was fifty degrees today Nov 19, 2018 and the bees where flying and taking Pollen substitute that I put in an empty medium hive for them. Thanksgiving day the local weather person says the high will be 32 degrees. Happy Thanksgiving David!

      @@davidhaught84 Yeah up in the north you could go 3 months without any flight. I agree first thing in spring you should feed before trees get up and running. Last year my bees were desperate and took old floor out of our compost bin. To prevent them scavenging garbage I will definitely feed this year.
      I completely agree about NUCs. I lost one of my 4 hives and if I had a NUC I could have prevented it. Going to run a few NUCs next year to breed queens and have as a backup. Wintering NUCs is tricky in the north too, have to merge before winter and have at least two boxes. They need more food and like to go up instead of over when its really cold.

    Hey David I mentioned a week or so back that Union county had lost all our Goldenrod due to several hard frost. You had mentioned that we probably still had some in remote locations. Since I told you that we've had a couple of 22-degree nights and just yesterday coming back from Whitetail hunting I found one of those remote locations and yes the Goldenrod was still bloomed and I absolutely was amazed. Of course it wasn't an acre of it, but it was a nice little patch. And are honey bees can find it even when we can as you are aware. 😉

    David, by comparison, I live in the Southern Texas pan handle. Our humidity is in the teens most of the year, today was 17% the low was also around 20f but the high this afternoon was 72 and we are forcast for highs in the 70s through Thursday. How would you approach feeding sugar syrup under those conditions? I've been feeding every two to three weeks on the warm forecasts. What would you do. BTW thanks for the great queens back in October. The hit the comb and we're laying on day 4.

Wish i didn’t have to Manage a butcher shop and just do bee’s. But that isn’t realistic. To the ?s how many brood frames do you start a 5 frame Nuc with? And how many shakes do you give? Also did a trap out on a ladies house, took a couple weeks but finally got a Nuc full of bees 3 full frames and queen. But don’t see eggs or larvae. Soon as I brought them home , 2 days ago started subbing and giving them sugar water. How many days would you give her to start laying? I was thinking nothing yet because they haven’t been nourish well till I got them to my home. Sorry for all the questions but appreciate your time. Thank you! 🐝

    If you have trouble getting your sugar water to turn clear just put it in clear jugs and place it in the sun for anywhere from 3-4 hrs to one day depending how strong the sun is and it will turn clear.

    I'd love to try a package. However, all advice says they'd never survive the hardship of a Canadian winter. I winter my hives indoors and temperature controlled but it's still darkness at +4 C for 5 months. Hell of a big change. The old timers here before modern insulating materials, higher costs and prices used cyanide to gas all their bees every fall then they'd all start with new packages imported from the US in the spring.

  • @SkirnirW
    @SkirnirW 5 років тому

    Hey David, I was wondering. Could you also wrap hives with insulating material like the silver stuff that those Hot/Cold shopping bags are made of? Or would that make it TOO warm inside for the bees?
    I'm just throwing an idea out there.

    Pollen substitute shortens bee life. Because substitute lacks several nutritional properties that are critical for bee development. Using supplement shortens bees lives up to 2 weeks or more. If fed over a long period of time it will affect brood rearing. It is a short term supplement not a replacement. Search for "Fat Bee Skinny Bee" for an excellent explanation of honey bee nutrition.

      Spoilage will not be a problem. Insects and pests can be with no bees to run them off and at night I've had cockroaches and mice get in the feed. Humidity will cause it cake so you may have to loosen it up occasionally.

      @@antoinetteliberto4471 glad I could help, please make sure you and your grandson understand. Keeping bees is not like a dog or a cat, where you put out food and water and they are fine. It is a considerable amount of effort during that first year, I am a first year beek with just 2 hives, and I was in my beeyard nearly every weekend doing something most of the time it was just for an hour or 2, but its time you must dedicate. The first few months is checking on the hive to make sure it is growing, you have brood in all stages etc, It is all about making sure they have enough to survive the winter time. Then comes the pest control, varroa & Tracheal mites, hive beetles, wax moths. Believe me it was worth every moment and has been an amazing experience this first year, but it is not a set it and forget it, go get honey and the world is great. It is an investment in both money and time needed to sustain them as pest free and healthy as possible.
