    Wow, you are a real artist, the fact that you can color match to pieces of wood this different is nothing short of magic!

    • @johnsonrestoration

      Thank you! But honestly I think of myself as a tradesman, not an artist. An artist creates things! I just problem solve (or at least try to)

      @@johnsonrestoration You have the eye for this which is an art. There's woodworkers out there that are much more skilled and do create things that couldn't color match the way you do.

    I did worked on a very similar table last year. The loose leg had deeply set finish nails. I worked in as much glue as I could into the available gap. Perhaps I could have cut the nails but was afraid of damage, also I doubt my clients would have sprung for the level of attention you put in. Very nice video.

    Very nice work Tom. It appeared to be a challenge matching the lighter panel to the rest of the top, especially with such a fine inlay to deal with. Again with time and patience, you pulled off a very close match. I lost count of the number of overnight drying periods in your video, that few minutes of video time obviously took a good few days. Wood - such a fantastic material to work with and what a reveal the top was. Thank you for posting, I look forward to your next project.

    I bought at auction a beautiful tiger stripe oak dining room table. The table top has been beautifully refinished, but nothing was done to the five, 7" extensions. I've sand the undersides and tested a number of color mixes. Matching colors is sooo difficult. Just the slightest change in red or brown or gold produces a totally different result. I have to rely on my daughter's eye.

    • @johnsonrestoration
      @johnsonrestoration  5 років тому

      Yes, matching is difficult. Especially if the wood has darkened with age, applying a stain is just too different. Always make sure your match is less red, if it's more red it will really stand out.

    Finally a video with you using steel wool!!! I was wondering if you ever used it. Do you ever find problems with residual oil in the steel wool getting into your surface? The technique I learned was very reliant on steel wool and nearly never used sand paper. So, when there was a little residual oil in the steel wool once in a while, it was a pain in the butt.

    • @johnsonrestoration
      @johnsonrestoration  6 років тому +1

      Oh yes, I've always used steel wool. The Liberon steel wool does not have oil, although when I have used other brands it has never seemed to be a problem

    • @robertm4050
      @robertm4050 6 років тому

      I thought it was pretty unique to see you apply wax with steel wool. I think I am going to buy a couple old pieces this week and see if I can flip them for some profit. You got me motivated to get going again and the weather is really nice too be able to work in an unheated shop. I meant to try and get my little kerosene heater going this weekend.
