    Sounds like Sparx Gen 2 is still the best bang for your buck. Glad there’s some competition though to keep both companies honest.

    Great first impression. I'll watch part 2 anyhow, but the info on the calibration process was all I really needed to see/hear. Same for the lack of filter and dust management. At that price point it sure seems to be missing some important features.

    It's so wild how much these things cost still. Milwaukee or DeWalt could make a compact portable sharpener that runs on power tool batteries with the highest quality motors in the world and sell them for $399 easily, including a battery. I sharpen my skates by hand with a Milwaukee M12 cordless rotary tool with a half inch stone ball attachment and my edges are always good. Takes time and practice, but I'm into that whole setup for $60 and the whole thing fits in my pocket. I have enough stone grinders to sharpen my skates every 2-4 weeks for the next 10 years for $60.

    Great review! I've been using this sharpener for a week now and the flaw you mentionned about the adjustement bugged the heck out of me at first. I did use about 10 % of the ring usage simply by resharpening everytime like you metionned before getting it right. Mine was off center from the factory. One thing I can mention, if you remove to bottom tray, there is mopre room to work in the machine. I have bigger than normal hands and i had enough room with it removed to work in there. I was also not able to use the app because it does not work on android at the moment... Another fail for me but I certainly hope the app will help on that side. As for sharpening, it works amazing!!! I had the rink pro shop staff verify the sharpen and he was quite impressed by it! If the small and larger flaws can be fixed by software this is an amazing machine!

    I really had some high hopes for this. Would have considered switching from Sparx 2 to Bauer if it had, 1) ease of use (this doesn’t appear to be simple to use) 2) a profile option (nope) and 3) an app/screen that automatically calibrates multiple sets of skates based on personalized settings such as Kid 1 right skate, Kid 1 left skate, Kid 2 right skate, etc (a large wish but no again). Going to stick with my sparx gen 2 quite a while longer it seems.

    • @joeSaysThings
      @joeSaysThings Місяць тому

      Profiling adds a huge layer of complexity to the machine. Pro-sharp's machine that profiles is way (WAY) more expensive. These machines are for skaters who want to sharpen, not professionals who want an affordable machine.

    hmm sounds like they have some kinks to work out before its going to compete with Sparx. My only complaint with Sparx is the "sparx toe" I wish it would do a full cut so I don't have to take it to a shop once a year for a traditional stone sharpening

      @@ledlightskate8189 that’s just another tool I have to buy. And a waste of time it’s silly that they can’t make their machine do the whole blade. That is my only complaint and my solution right now is once a year before the season starts I take it to the local pro shop and have them do it with an actual wissota machine.

  • @joef2504

    Great video! Easy of machine adjustment is everything and making things less complicated (like manually locking the skate in place) just makes tons of sense...its their Gen1 unit so we knew there would be mistakes, but they had 2-3 generations of Sparx machines to compare to and they still chose to release this with the issues is just strange...full disclosure i'm a happy Sparx owner, but the more players in this portable skate sharpener space = competition = better products and faster innovation...

    Sounds like a failure to me. I was hoping someone would give Sparx a run for their money here to maybe drive down some costs, but this ain't it.
    What I got:
    Looks cool
    More money
    Heavier and larger
    Going to be messy
    Not as portable
    Pain in the ass to load a skate
    Pain in the ass to change a stone
    Pain in the ass to calibrate
    No flat bottom V
    Hopefully they recognize all these flops and the V2 is a real contender

      add sparx’s other features that you can remove the base and clean it sonewhere (backyard) away from the house using air gun, height of the grinding wheel adjustability, and with the pro base, the quick access glass door are other things Bauer needs to be better at as well. You would think Bauer/Prosharp would’ve studied the Sparx and made it better. They totally missed the mark on this one.

    • @3beltwesty
      @3beltwesty 4 дні тому

      Sparx studied the older Prosharp skatepal units and copied its self centering clamp.
      Then used Prosharps diamond dust wheel abrasive design too.
      But added a chip in the sparx wheel to milk the profits off the discs.
      Ie classic razor blade inkjet cartridge model.
      So they sell the cool spark unit at cost and ride the disc sales.
      The older Prosharp units with a self centering clamp go back 2 plus decades and are very robust.
      Spark created a plastic low cost version to sell discs.
      The Spark designs beautifully made a cool cheap unit to sell discs.
      The old prosharp units with the 100mm diamond disc will sharpen 500 to 1000 pairs of skates at a fraction of the cost of the Sparks discs.

I had the same guy sharpen my skates for 25 years when I lived up north, now I get them sharpened by the equipment manager of the Knoxville Ice Bears 🤷‍♂️

    • @StillAliveAndKicking_
      @StillAliveAndKicking_ Місяць тому +2

      @@dalastbmills The two machines are quite different, except in that both are automatic machines and use diamond coated grinding wheels. As for doing things properly, I sharpen my skates each week, one pass on a Sparx. The sharpen is excellent, the profile maintained, edges perfectly level. Manual sharpeners take off more metal, cost more, you have to travel to them, and they change the profile with time. I prefer to do things properly.
