- In this GDC 2022 session, Insomniac Games’ Anna Roan and Brian Mullen cover the setup, challenges, and lessons learned while paving the way for next-gen lighting. There will also be discussion on how the workflows and pipeline from Marvel's Spider-Man were implemented to work with this project, and how that work needed to adapt over the span of the project to create a truly fantastic visual spectacle for the PlayStation 5.

Really interesting. Rift Apart is one of the best looking games ever, interesting to see how aspects of the visuals were pulled off.
Seconded. One of the finest examples of lighting and graphics I’ve ever seen. A showcase of the ps5 generation and sad more hasn’t come at this level of quality.
I am in complete awe of how tightly managed Insomniacs game development process is. From strict compute budgets for each scene, to the pipeline itself, to even having a full department focusing on stuff like lighting. I am sure many other game developers feel the same.
Theres always a lighting team in every game studio
@@NoobNoob339 Exactly.
This should be interesting! Rift Apart is unbelievably beautiful.
one of the best lighting talk on GDC, thanks!
Love this game, plays like a dream!
It's insane how they didn't win a single award at The Game Awards
Insane Lecture! Thank you!!!
I was expecting more about RT, but this was still nice.
very interesting but they are clearly not good with presentations, they just read the written down stuff
What a great talk! Does anyone know what "Adaptation Anchor / Adaptation Range" in the slide show at the 10 minute mark actually means? It clearly impacts the amount the Emissive channel impacts the rendered scene, but it's not clear how. I can't seem to locate a technical definition of the terms online so I can use to implement it in my own projects.
I think it has to do with Automatic Exposure, when the game engine simulates the lens of the human eye that changes exposure when going from a very dark to very bright scene. My guess is, the adaptation anchor must be the middle EV value, from which the final EV value of the camera can go above or below, but only up to the defined range.
Besides the paper An Anchoring Theory of Lightness Perception, I think there might be literature in the GPU Gems book series regarding HDRI tone-mapping and automatic adaptation of exposure.
Very informative. Thanks for uploading.
Awesome talk. I learned a lot.

@@HobosLikeStew Yes. This news was not present 6-7 months ago, so this is a pleasant surprise. Really wish they'd bring the others over as well.
ratchet on ps4 was way better
That's a hard no from me
> o k
As someone who doesn't hate on that game like a lot of the fanbase does and thinks it's an overall decent game in the series, you're out of your goddamn mind man.
@@TerrorOfTalos no open levels no grind levels no hover pack levels no shooting mini game no races no flying levels I could keep going all day no underwater levels
@@trapez77 "no open levels" savali and reimagined sargasso, "No grind levels" 2 planets had at least one grind rail section, "no flying levels" didn't even know people missed these and I always thought they were just ok, that being said there's technically one during the last third of the game, "no shooting minigame" glitch?, "no races" that time trial on savali and the one arena challenge, "no underwater levels" did you even play the game? Cordelion had underwater section. There's a huge difference between saying something has nothing and just wanting more of it.
