Paris Est's TGV Euroduplex

  • TGV Euroduplex trains (class 4700 and class 800) are an evolution of the TGV Duplex Dasye (class 700). They are designed for services between France and other countries (Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Spain)

      @@ErebosSan - I like the TGV (all versions - including the Duplexes). However, let's not forget what they (and especially the Duplexes) are about. TGV are designed to move as many people efficiently as possible - which air travel in Europe does NOT do. At the distances at which TGV is most efficient, it has no peer - I am not disputing that. However, if AMTRAK got consent to have Alstom build it (which they could do at the Hornell, NY facilities they already have), it would cut the floor out from under AMTRAK's biggest critics - politicians - by taking away the biggest criticism of AMTRAK as a service - it supposedly being "for the wealthy". Liberty Duplex (along with a Duplex version of ACS/ALC) would give rail travel an option at shorter distances in North America that it currently does not have - and compete with air travel at those same distances. Air travel is rather inefficient at those shorter distances - as Europe proves.

    What TGV Duplex (and EuroDuplex in particular) is about is passenger capacity Could ALSTOM build it in Hornell, NY? Yes - Liberty is based on TGV 200 - a single-floor version of EuroDuplex. Therefore - Liberty Duplex is buildable. However, Liberty Duplex would cut the floor out from under THE argument that has been used to attack AMTRAK since the founding - the "for the rich" argument. And where would Liberty Duplex run? Please - the NEC - specifically, the replacement for Amfleet! Existing Liberty would remain - however, Liberty Duplex would be a capacity monster - which is what EuroDuplex is - and is subsidized for. I like the idea of Liberty Duplex - unfortunately, I don't see AMTRAK getting consent for Alstom to build it - due to politics - despite it making a great deal of sense. (The same would apply to Cascades Duplex - s duplex version of SIEMENS ALC-42 or even ACS-6x for Cascades, MARC, SEPTA, MBTA, etc.
