This was EXTREMELY helpful. I'm 36 and I've never highlighted or contoured before because I'm afraid of looking like a clown. Also when I've seen other tube girls (20-somethings) highlight and contour in their videos it just seems like they are putting on tons of product and it ends up turning me off from doing it on myself. I'm all about not looking too over done. So this method you have shown us seems a lot more doable for me. Thanks for looking out for us girls who are no longer 20 ;-) lol
You are a rare gem in the world of beauty...so great at what you do, yet humble. So successful without having attitude. Love all the mature face tips! Binge watching you now!
I am a new watcher and this is me first video of yours and I learned so much! I am in my late 30s and are showing aging to where the younger beauty gurus techniques don't all work for me anymore. So glad I've found a mature beauty youtuber!
thank-you for this video. I'm reading the comments and I feel the same way . I look in the mirror after doing my makeup and i feel like I look great then take a photo and I can't believe what I'm looking at. I'm 53 and I have always been told that I look so young but lately...wow I'm just shocked so now I'm doing the Botox thing on my forehead and using retinol and I have to say I'm really starting to notice a difference in my skin .,your channel has changed my life in such a good way . you are wonderful and a great teacher.
Still relevant 4 years later. I'm mid 50's and just starting to take interest in makeup. Your style of artistry next to your teaching abilities are a perfect way for me to enjoy myself and learn new techniques.
This is hands down the best H&C tutorial! Especially since it's for mature skin. I was always so confused about putting H&C under foundation vs. over. Now I know the how and why of doing both! Your results are so natural and beautiful looking and I can actually think I can pull it off on my 45 yr old face. Much respect to the 20-something beauty gurus, but I'm not interested too much in following their tutorials, as gorgeous as they are. I'm realistic with my expectations and I know I will never look like them with that young supple skin they have. Oh how I miss it. So thank you so much for this tutorial!
I've been watching you consistently after I found you a few months and am over 75! Am homebound (unrelated to age), and suspect that there are others of my decade at home who entertain themselves with UA-cam. Your videos help me look like I still like myself as needed--in public or with family, and especially in photos. We mail-order! Maybe there are others my age? Could u add 70s to your listing of age groups? "....40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s" .
Yes I agree,I just turned 73COME last week and l need the help for making myself look better,I got married at16 and had red hair and freckles, and was skinny I love"ed waring makeup then and trying to look better for myself, husband, and going out in general. But now very seldom fix my face at all, children are grown and my husband has died and I seldom get out of the house, but watching these Galls teaching the art of coverage and concealing has gotten My Attention.Thank You.
Elle. I'm 74 and your videos have been more helpful than many. I love the techniques you offer as well as detailed explanations why you choose each product. Also stop feeling you have to qualify your advice. You're a makeup professional so you DO know better than a 13 year old kid. Don't worry about acting like it! That's why most of us are here....to get professional advice. :))
I just turned 60 and I will go kicking and screaming before I let my age get the better of me. So good for you for keeping current and enjoying UA-cam. 👍🏻❤️
Love your videos! You have mega talent!!!! Having just turned 70 and seeing all the lines and wrinkles I am always trying to find different techniques for applying makeup. I have a long, thin face and have always been told not to contour and never to use powder. Also that "less is more" so I really never look made up as I am afraid I'll look too made up. Would love a video showing the mature 70 year old with lines and wrinkles what is the best way to apply makeup to our faces and what the best products are for us.
Elle Lear Artistry, thank you again for another 101 tutorial. I actually am self taught and watched UA-cam videos on how to contour and highlight my facial features. Unfortunately, the tutorials I found were all on young women 10 or more years younger than me. I really appreciate your take on the "Contour & Highlight for Mature Faces". The techniques you showed will help me a great deal! :)
You know what i love most about this? even though it was alot of work and steps and probably way more than i would do on an average work day, you don't look like you have alot of makeup on. You just look beautiful and fresh and natural. I really like that. It seems like alot of people on youtube are so busy being pretty and creative, that they just over do the look and although i appreciate the creativity and artistry, i am never going to wear that look or even attempt that look. So it is the same as looking at pictures in Allure magazine. I love your looks because they are just classic beauty. Good job!
Blend the highlighting/contouring *upward*… and with beauty-blender spritzed with setting spray! Voilà! Can't wait to get up tomorrow morning and work on the ol' mug again, Elle! You're turning this into a fun new hobby for me (and I've worn makeup for 5 decades now)! 👀
Elle, if I can even LOOK like I've got your gorgeous complexion, I'll put marshmallow fluff, 10 W 40, Scrubbing Bubbles and whatever ELSE it takes to do so! Rock on!! 🤷🤷🤷
Elle, I think this might hv been a request of mine along with other viewers too, because the mature face is so different because of sagging. I appreciate yr listening to us & coming thru with such a great explanation & showing step by step how & why. Best contour video I've seen for mature faces! I think I need to get a contour that blends easier! I will try this one. Thx so much again!
I absolutely LOVE your content! I found your channel a month ago and have been binge watching. I watch a lot of Beauty Channels and have learned so much from yours.
One of the best explanations of contouring I've seen so far! I'm a young (inside) 55 -year-old who's starting to age all at once. Your explanations are very concise and easy to understand. One thing I'd like to say is that you play with your hair a lot and it can be distracting. You might want to pull it back. Otherwise, you rock!!
This video is wonderful. You'd be surprised at the number of we "more mature" women that watch your videos. So please keep us in mind as you plan your ideas. I met a tiny little old lady once and I complimented her on her complexion. She took my hand and poked my hand with her finger..."Every day! You have to fight it every day." And now I do.
This comment is a little late but ive bern watching (binge) watching alot of your channel and i am so glad i found it. Im 31 and really just starting to get into the makeup and how i apply it thank you for having such an amazing range of videos on your channel. Be blessed
It made so much sense to do a large portion of contour and highlight before foundation-I had never thought of that, but it looks SO much more natural! Congrats on the bump in subscribers! More people should know about you! XO
Great tutorial! You have a such an approachable manner and make more complicated techniques seem so easy and accessible. I will have to give this a try. Thank you!
Hi Elle...I'm one of your new subscribers, I'm 60 and am needing some new ideas... what used to work just doesn't anymore. Today I tried a couple of your techniques and they were wonderful...Thank You for making make up fun again!!!
I just across your video as I was looking for contour videos for ovet 40+ . Most of these techniques I already do, your techniques are great. Thank you.
I don't know why I feel so intimidated by cream contour and highlight, but you explained it so well, I think I need to give it a go! Thanks for another great video!
And I’m 42 and brand new to makeup aside from lipstick when I have a special occasion. But now I’m getting older, I think it’s time for some help! Thanks, Elle!
I love how u show & teach the make up tips specially the contour part, it's easy to understand & follow specially for someone like me who doesn't know the proper way of putting on make up...thank u for sharing
Hi Elle! I just found your wonderful UA-cam page. Thank you for explaining the contouring and highlighting so beautifully. I am especially grateful that you included us women who have Fuller faces. I I have always loved makeup and skincare since watching my mom as a little girl applying her makeup and doing masks. I studied everything that she did and thought I know exactly what to do. So imagine my surprise when I was at the time in my life around 15, well at age 12 my mom gave me a light blush because I have very light skin and people kept asking me if I was sick LOL. But imagine my surprise when I went to put on my eyeshadow exactly as I had always watched my mother and it looked horrible. That is because my mother has beautiful big round eyes. She also has a long face and I have almond-shaped eyes with Fuller cheeks and a combination of almost heart-shaped with a square jaw. I'm sorry to go on and on but I'm telling you this story because trying to find out how to do my highlighting and contouring has been like that moment with eyeshadow. Everyone has firstly put on tons and tons and layers and layers of contour and highlight and cover up and then layers of Foundations and powders. I was so thrilled to find someone that actually demonstrated in a way that women can understand, that looks so beautifully natural and that you gave advice for both types of faces. I just wanted to say I really enjoyed this demonstration I've signed up also because I love the way that you are open to everyone. You're a great teacher and have a great personality! Sorry for such a long post but you are so warm that I felt I could finally tell my eye makeup store LOL looking forward to more great demonstrations.☺
Goodness gracious, girl! Without a drop of makeup on your face, as was the case at the beginning of this video, you look unbelievably young and healthy. Yes, I have trouble with the 'gaunt' phenom and as I've seen others share, I'm deeply troubled by what I see in photos of myself. I have an entirely different picture in my mind's eye of how I look and it's so depressing to see the sagging stranger in the mirror. It does feel as though I aged all of a sudden leading to an overwhelming shift in my appearance. I don't consider myself vain or shallow and I never used to be so concerned over my appearance. I took it for granted. I didn't recognize how pretty I was in my 20's and 30's, and how differently you're treated when you're attractive vs the homely and mostly invisible woman I've transformed into. Your videos give me hope. So does the prospect of dental work improving my appearance in the near future. I suspect it may be unhealthy - this longing I have to move through the world unseen, because of how painfully self-conscious I've become. I'm beginning to wish I'd never blossomed when I was younger. I was a wee ugly duck; awkward-looking all through my childhood and into my teens, with buck teeth, frizzy hair, an allergy to fashion and poor social skills. I was clueless and hard on the eyes. Somehow, that all changed in a drastic way when I reached the age of 17. My teeth were fixed, I lost weight, I learned how to work with my curls and I grew into a bit of a looker. In my early 40's, I've become a full-grown ugly duck, everything about me that was pleasing to the eye has gone away. I've aged very poorly and once again, I desperately need dental work. That's something no amount of make-up can disguise. When did looks become so important? I always thought people placed far too much emphasis on the surface, neglecting the importance of the substance within. Throughout my life, I've felt more drawn to, and more easily charmed by, the underdogs and castoffs and misanthropes, some of them shy and/or socially awkward. There are those people who become more beautiful, not in spite of their flaws and idiosyncrasies, but because of them. Particularly those whose hardships have helped them become more compassionate and understanding... more fully human. In any case, that's my 2,000 cents and then some. Forgive me for how absurdly long this post is. Brevity is for the birds.
watch your channel all the time. Love everything you do. So professional and beautiful. thAnk you for this lesson in contour and highlight. really helps.
Ok, I know my comment on this video is way delayed, BUT, this is an amazing tutorial!! We have a similar face shape, though I’m a little older, & this was so so so helpful!! Your explanation of it all was so helpful. Thank you!
Best highlight and contour video that I've watched so far. Thanks so much for your effort. I didn't see u applying loose powder to set your foundation. But I usually do....so could u pls let me know the proper routine....loose/pressed powder should go before or after bronzing/contour powder and highlight powder?
This is the video I've been waiting for. I ask you a few weeks ago about this. I have got such sunken cheeks and need help. I look so dead in photos. Thank you so so much. It really helped.
luv2dance I am so glad you are enjoying these!!! I am using the elf one I reviewed. It is a little thicker then I like for this look but I thinned it out Xo 😘
Elle this is a great, excellent, amazing video! I love it! specially on this year when everybody is crazy about highlighting and sometimes we don't know how and when we should wear it, I have combination skin and that stick it's a little to grease for me , if somebody has the same problem, try the sticks from smashbox they're very creamy but not greasy I love them.
Awesome 👏 well explained . I’ve watched rather a few on contouring and highlighting. Contouring videos are usually too involved . The everyday women becomes quickly overwhelmed. So glad you mentioned to skip steps for particular face shapes . That double stick would be too easy. Cheers
I have always been a bit scared of makeup, because generally speaking, when I try to use it I look like a clown haha! However, I copied what you did and my face looked soooo much younger than my usual throwing on of foundation and blusher! You made it so easy to follow, thank you! ❤️
Hi Elle! I am very new to makeup tutorials. I've been watching them for a few months now and have come across some terms that confuse me like baking your makeup, buildable makeup and others that I can't think of at the moment. You are gorgeous and then some and I know you're an expert so I was wondering if you could do a newcomer video for us newbies. Thank you so much! 😀
Thanks Elle,Great tutorial video. Its difficult to follow especially if we dont have.enough time.could you please make a video in a very simple and easy make up ttecniques?Do I have to clean all the brushes and sponges after use?
Hi Elle! I'm new to your channel and over 50. Great tip about using this product on the eye area and the setting spray tip! Never thought of that. Also, what foundation and concealer did you use and the shade color? Thank you 😘
hi Al thank you so much for all your videos they're very helpful and I love all your tips for mature women as you're getting older or makeup changes and you get to a spot where you don't know what to do so thanks so much for your videos
Hi elle. I love your channel especially this one for the mature face. I'm the big 50 this year and have not worn make up for quite a few years. I'd like to ask if Possible what colour concealer and contour do I choose. I don't want to go too light or too dark. HELP please
Hi please can you tell me what colour hoola you used .? Your technique was great , I'm excited to try it as I've never seen it done this way before and it's much more subtle. I myself find it hard to contour, as I have a fat, round face with multiple chins lol. It's hard to know what to do as you age, as your so used to doing your make up one way and now everything has to change as I have things I never had before like , extreme dark circles, hooded eyes , creases under the eyes ect, ect.. Makes me wish I was a man as then you could just wash your face and your done lol .
I'm going to try that contour/highlight stick. I'm 44 (told I look younger) and contouring has never really been much in my usual routine. I generally end up looking like I have dirt on my face or something when I try contouring and bronzing 😕
thank you so much this video is the best iv seen on contouring so well explained and simple. iv tried a few cream contour pallets but they look cakey on me so I'm definitely gonna buy the maybelline stick. heading for 39 this year I have the same shaped face as you and a high forehead too so will be trying this out...btw what foundation did you use it's beautiful over the contour
I love that you actually commented and replied to my comment. i am a new subscriber and i am just trying to learn how to apply make up now that my face and skin has changed a bit now that i am in my mid forties. (gasp). so thank you!
Thanx Elle you are beautiful as always. And double thank you for using drugstore products, I can go n get all the things you used. P.S I know what that product was. I JUST bought it.
Great informative video! I must say I laughed when you remarked on your slight dip on your jawline, I promise you in 10 years you'll look back and laugh too!
I'm really going to try this . I have to admit since I've grown older (59,) and my face has changed dramatically, I don't like how I look in pictures anymore. I actually can't even remember the last time I took a photo. Sad but true.
eva Draper I'm sorry that you feel that way but I'm with you. Once I turned 50 it's literally just downhill. That said tho I decided to just keep staring at my self and embrace it because there's not much we can do unless we have thousands of dollars for cosmetic surg which I'm not against but I also don't want to change the way I look if that makes sense sometime plastic surgery will really change your face and maybe you really won't like the outcome. That's even more scary to me. Anyway so I just take a lot of different selfies and basically force myself not to hate what I saw because that is what other people are seeing. I know it's really hard to watch ourselves age. I also find that the more attractive/beautiful people are in their 20s,30s and even 40s (because I was pretty hot in my forties, so I've been told, lol) the harder it is to accept the aging process.
Sylvia Carrasquillo WOW! Thank you for saying that because that is what has gone thru my mind-I was told I was a beauty until I started to hv weight gain early 50's & it is hard to accept that change along with sagging, droopy face, etc. I've decided to let my grey grow in because finally I'm starting to accept my changes and age.
PLUME 1 good for you, we just have to think differently too. I'm teetering on letting my grays grow in too!! Oh and the weight gain. I've gained weight too but not just gain it's like I'm gaining weight in odd places so my body shape is changing too. 😭😪what's amazing is as soon as 50 hit BOOM all down hill! But no matter what we are gorgeous just in a different more mature way!!!
First Ladies I love this sense of community you have going here!!! Keep it up!! Secondly I have been really trying to learn to love me where I am. Love what you got and find what makes you happy. Love you both xoxox
Great tutorial ....so I've been doing it all wrong as far as placement of the contour. I'm going to watch again. Do you always use cream contour? I have a powder palette & a Tarte Stick Contour crayon. Thanks so much. Elle.
Jane Warrick I'm not Elle but I am a freelance MUA and whenever I'm working on more mature client's I use only cream under or over foundation if it's a more everyday event or something and I use cream under foundation with powder on top like she did or I'll just use powder if it's a special event. hope that help's (:
cherry c. Thanks so much Cherry...I'm going to try this today.. mature skin takes a rethinking & less makeup for sure & I so love playing with makeup. Have a great Sunday.😘
Thanks!! great question, I actually only usually do powder contour because I want it to be very subtle but more mature skin looks amazing with the extra hydration that cream products give it. but you do want to set creams because they can slide over the day xo
Elle Leary Artistry Yes Elle...it's a beautiful thing. Love learning the best way to do makeup as I age ...thanks to all because I don't want to look like a clown & I have to change my application process. Lol 💕🌷
Thanks for this video. I am having a photo shoot in a couple of days and still looking at my best possible avenue. Remember I am coming from a generation that thought make up was rouge (blush) powder and lipstick.
Great video!!! much needed! also, could you help with mature eyes? my eyes are becoming so much smaller as I'm aging...they seem so small when I look at myself in pictures HELP
Could you do one for a working mom who is a minimal makeup wearer and work in a werehouse. If i wore all that i would feel too dressed up. Also how do you not sweat off your makeup in hot sweaty weather? Thanks
I can TOTALLY relate!

The MOST helpful contour and foundation video that I have found!!! I'm so happy I came across your videos!
Glad it was helpful!
For the first time in over 10yrs I put makeup on. Thank you so much!! I never knew how good it would make me feel. 😃
Contour and highlight before foundation...mind blown 🤯 and it makes perfect sense because the foundation just brings it all together.
Elle Lear Artistry, thank you again for another 101 tutorial. I actually am self taught and watched UA-cam videos on how to contour and highlight my facial features. Brevity is for the birds.
what did you have on your skin before you used the maybelline stick ? like moisturizer /primer your skin always looks so radiant

Best highlight and contour video that I've watched so far. Thanks so much for your effort.
I didn't see u applying loose powder to set your foundation. But I usually do....so could u pls let me know the proper routine....loose/pressed powder should go before or after bronzing/contour powder and highlight powder?
So glad I found this video. I have watched others but none were as helpful. Thank you again for another extremely helpful video! 💜
This is the video I've been waiting for. I ask you a few weeks ago about this. I have got such sunken cheeks and need help. I look so dead in photos. Thank you so so much. It really helped.
These 101's are SOOO great!! What foundation are you using here?
Thank you so much!!
luv2dance I am so glad you are enjoying these!!!

That was the best one I've seen as you explained why and the placement thanks xx

I am a new subscriber, found your channel , let’s say , accidentally and love it 😊 the way you explain every step and products .
Love your Basic 101s!!!! This one was especially good for those of us that need contouring but are a little unsure of it. THANKS
thank you so much!! what a great suggestion. I have added this to my list. Please let me know if you think of others that you want me to address xo
Yes!!! Oh Elle, this has explained so much to me!!! Thank you so much!!!
I really found this helpful! I have tried contouring before. My problem is blending after applying the contour.
Most definitely and thank you! Will give it a go tomorrow.
Absolutely amazing tips and tricks!!! Thank you so much....

Your channel is great!!!💕💕💕
Thanks, Elle! Great and helpful video!!
Hi Elle! I'm new to your channel and over 50. Great tip about using this product on the eye area and the setting spray tip! Never thought of that. Also, what foundation and concealer did you use and the shade color? Thank you 😘
Just found your channel and love it. This tutorial was what I needed :-)
I'm a new subscriber & I am really learning a lot from your channel, so thank you Elle!!

Your so beautiful and I really enjoyed this video I learned alot. Your very talented. I love your channel! Thanks so much for sharing.
hi Al thank you so much for all your videos they're very helpful and I love all your tips for mature women as you're getting older or makeup changes and you get to a spot where you don't know what to do so thanks so much for your videos
WOW! Great Elle!!
Great video! What is that magical stick you are using?
Great learning tutorial for those of us with mature skin, thank you!
I'm going to try that contour/highlight stick. I'm 44 (told I look younger) and contouring has never really been much in my usual routine. I generally end up looking like I have dirt on my face or something when I try contouring and bronzing 😕
lol!!! you are not alone. takes a little practice but you will get it xo
Really enjoy your videos!!!
thank you so much!! xo
thank you so much this video is the best iv seen on contouring so well explained and simple. iv tried a few cream contour pallets but they look cakey on me so I'm definitely gonna buy the maybelline stick. heading for 39 this year I have the same shaped face as you and a high forehead too so will be trying this out...btw what foundation did you use it's beautiful over the contour
Great love that look lovely and natural perfect thank you
I love that you actually commented and replied to my comment. i am a new subscriber and i am just trying to learn how to apply make up now that my face and skin has changed a bit now that i am in my mid forties. (gasp). so thank you!
I try my best!!! I love you guys xo
Thanx Elle you are beautiful as always. And double thank you for using drugstore products, I can go n get all the things you used. P.S I know what that product was. I JUST bought it.
Love this!! Great, usable tips. Thank you ❤
Great video! Did I understand correctly...foundation goes over contour and highlight??
Great informative video! I must say I laughed when you remarked on your slight dip on your jawline, I promise you in 10 years you'll look back and laugh too!
rowena muller you are so sweet thank you!!! Don't we always looks back and say, god I thought I was ... lol
Love this!! I can't find that it cosmetic Matt highlight Hun, what's the pallet called? X
Great video, thanks. Straight forward directives that work!
xoxoxoox
Love this tutorial ❤
Dang Elle !
So GOOD !
❤️
Sylvia Carrasquillo yes yes yes!!!!
Thanks!! great question, I actually only usually do powder contour because I want it to be very subtle but more mature skin looks amazing with the extra hydration that cream products give it. but you do want to set creams because they can slide over the day xo
thanks jane!! love my community. So nice to have a fellow MUA here. Great tips and I so appreciate you xo
Thanks
Gorgeous but I didn't see what you put under your eyes ? If nothing that's great. Guess I'll try it ..
great video I gonna to try it. Maybelline sticks are cool :)
