Okay, this is an update after my making and trying this dish soap. Results were that this recipe does leave a film on the dishes and that in order to ( through trial and error ) eliminate this you need to add 1 cup Baking Soda and 1/4 cup Lemon Juice to this recipe. The water, due to the soap, will still be grey but will not have the greasy water appearance. This method works very well as I have tested it on glasses for streak and clarity. All is well now with a little rework.
@marshwillow "ADD" 1 cup of Baking Soda and 1/4 cup Lemon Juice to your already made recipe and you will definitely notice a big difference in your water. I too was getting that greasy feeling and residue left on my dishes. Now, I am happy to say I love my dish soap. Hope this helps!
I want to thank you for this. I love it! I am now sharing it with friends and anyone who wants to learn this skill. I use my stick blender at the end to make it well blended and it pours so much more easily. Love the scent.
Hi Annie, Loved your video on dish soap making. I did make a 1/2 batch to start out with tonight. I remember my older relatives using this type of bar soap and having it sit out on their sink tops for their dishes. Kind of brings back back some great memories for me as well. I love the smell also. Okay, wish me luck! Thanks again for the great video. Rick
KoloniaPNI, I've tried using Ivory soap to wash dishes--it doesn't rinse off the dishes and will give you digestive issues. To be specific, I spent a lot of time in the restroom after the experiment, so please don't try it! Octagon says on the package that you can use it for dishwashing, and I've used it personally for some months. I've heard that Kirk's Coco Castille soap is safe to use, but after the Ivory experiment I've been afraid to try. Hope this helps! ~Annie
Just to point out - when you raise the pH of something you are making it basic or alkaline not acidic. If you are raising the pH to increase the cleaning power of the product, by adding acidic ingredients (Vinegar, citric acid, etc) you are lowering the pH you just increased. However I do believe Borax is a base.
Thanks for the video, tried it and loved it! I too am amazed by the rude people here. Clearly they don't pay attention to the recipe ingredients and the video. Also if you run the dishwasher when full you use LESS water than washing by hand!! Plus the heat sanitizes the dishes. THANKS AGAIN!
Growing up in the Appalachian Mts. of E. TN our mother always had Octagon soap on hand. Not for washing our clothes but to make a paste and apply to poison Ivy poison Oak and Poison Sumac, which it seemed to stop the itch and spread almost instantly.
I was at a local discount store a few days ago and I happened to look down on the soap isle, and holy cow, they had Octagon soap. I cleaned the shelf. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price. I ended up walking out of the store with 19 bars of Octagon soap for $7.60 before tax. What a deal!!
oh, and the pumice soap... i use lava bar, try it on laundry stains for the grease stains! lava bars were designed for oil rig workers, guys at refineries like me so imagine that. its easy to get grease stains out the dishes!
You can get washing soda from Ace Hardware from the store or order from their online. They have Fels Naptha laundry soap also but it's too expensive to get more than a couple of bars on line. Just hold off until you can get to your grocery store or Walmart.
40X, to make washing soda, preheat oven to 400, then put 2 cups BAKING SODA in a 9X13 pan. Break up any clumps. Put pan in oven on middle rack. After 30 minutes, stir well. Bake one hour total. Let your newly converted washing soda cool. Pour into air tight container with lid. Keep air out of your washing soda or it will turn back into BAKING SODA!
Hi Annie this is good I like things like this I make some of my own products and solar cook a lot. A cheap supply of sodium carbonate is to pick up baking soda at the dollar store and heat it up to 400 deg f in a toaster oven and it will go from sodium bicarbonate to sodium carbonate in about an hour.Ed edsworkshp
love this video I did recieve my octagon soap from lucky mojo as I said it cost me 3.50 a bar but it was well worth it. I ordeed 11 bars as it takes them 2 weeks to ship. THANK YOU I really am glad to have this product. Mercedes out in Las Vegas No one here sells it and will not order it. So at least I can order it from Lucky Mojo. God Bless
Hi Mslissa22! I wouldn't use an aluminum spoon but I think stainless steel or those nylon spoons would be fine. I just always use a wooden spoon out of habit!
IT'A A GREAT VIDEO, THANK YOU ANNIE! AND BY THE WAY, THE TIP OF SUBSTITUTE WASHING SODA FOR PH RAISER THAT CONTAINS SODIUM CARBONITE WAS GREAT FOR ME,SINCE I CAN'T BUY THIS PRODUCT HERE IN PUERTO RICO . THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND TO SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH US!!!
I have tried several home dish soap recipes and I have been very disappointed maybe it was the soap.Octagon wow I didn't know they sold this anymore but I am going to find it and try your soap. Thanks for sharing...
Thanks for the posting! Unfortunatly OCTAGON soap is no longer being made by Colgate Palmolive..... Would Fels Naphta be as effective as Octagon? I read that you have substituted with ZOTE, do you still use one-half of a bar?
I use Pink Zote soap and get a gallon of concentrate using one bar of Zote. Here is how i do it. In a half gallon of warm water melt the Zote then do the "Trick". The "Trick" is to use a electric hand mixer to get the melted Zote to be creamy form not "foamy" so it wont clog the bottle when dispensing. Then add 1/3 cup lemon juice, 1/3 cup white vinegar, 1/2cup washing soda*, 1/2cup baking soda as you are whipping it. then let cool down. add the cream to a 1 gal jug and fill the jug with water. Viola!! a gallon of dish washing soap which fills 9 empty 14 oz bottles. ( Zote $.99....lemon juice $1.00 bottle.... baking soda $.50... *washing soda (if made from baking soda )$.50... white vinegar $1.00 bottle.) ((to make washing soda in a pinch baking a 1/2 cup of baking soda in the oven @ 400 degrees for an hour turns it into a usable washing soda in case you are out of washing soda.)), My friend Hana told me she took the one gallon i made for her and made two from it and it works just as good for her.
Bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Pour over a mixture of 2 T Washing Soda (not baking soda) 2T Borax 2t. dawn dish soap 1/4 cup of lemon juice added after pouring in boiling water to avoid clumps Stir lightly and funnel into an empty milk jug or other gallon container. Then fill the jug almost to the top with warm water. Shake prior to each use,, That's it! Add Vineger to the rinse dispenser
I would pour the hot mixture in first so that I could use the rest of the water to rinse the last of the soap mixture out of the pan -therby getting all the ingredients into the final bottle
Thank you so much for this information Annie, I've been looking into inexpensive ways to make homemade laundry detergent, fabric softner, body scrub/wash and dish soap was my next target. Luckily, I stumbbled upon your video. Thx A million! =)
Dear Queentut1977, I don't have the barcode for Octagon, the only store that sold it near here went under. I've been using Zote soap in the recipes instead without issue. Amazon.com has Octagon as well as Luckymojo. I hope that it helps. You can substitute Zote without issue on this recipe. I like to use a little more of the Zote when I make it.
I tried this with the Zote soap and I did not like it for washing dishes. It made everything greasy and i had to use large amounts for anything to feel clean, mind you I do rinse my dishes right after I a done. It does work really well as stain remover for clothes tho. I am going to try this antibacterial soap net time.
I don't make my own liquid soap instead I used my homemade soap bar to clean my dishes. I don't like to melt the bar because of low sudsing. But I will try to make a liquid soap by using potassium hydroxide. But I love my lye soap with 0% super fat I use to wash my dishes and I grated them for my powder laundry.
Raising the ph makes something more alkaline ....and the main use for soda ash light (what ever they call it on the box)...is to turn hard water into soft water in laymens terms ...basically all you're doing there is stretch out a bar of soap which would be more suited to washing your clothes instead of dishes...
octagon is no more, they stopped making it, i use castile soap it is also rated for dishes. you can actually turn baking soda into washing soda, you cook it in the over, you can look up how to do that, or ebay.
I would think that instead of pouring the water in the jug that was not used in the cooking process you could use that to try to clean up the pan a bit more so you can get even more of the soap into the jug at the end..
Colgate no longer produces Octagon soap. It is $159.00 for 3 bars of it on Amazon as of 1/4/2023, so this is out of my price range. Can I use a Dove bar or Zote instead?
THANK YOU AND I FINALLY ORDERED IT TODAY ON LINE $ 3.50 A BAR FROM LUCKY MOJO. ZOTE ONLY COST A DOLLAR A BAR. I WAS NOT SURE IF I COULD USE ZOTE. THANK YOU ACE HARDWARE DOES NOT CARRY IT.
Genevieve I don't think adding vinegar to the mix would harm a thing! @Ogala64 For really greasy items (plastic or whatever) I make sure I have a good lather built up on my washcloth, sponge or whatever - I keep a bar of the soap beside the sink for extra heavy-duty lather. Scrub with the lathered cloth and rinse well. I've yet to have a greasy dish or pan beat me.
Does this soap cut grease at all? Right now I am using watered down Dr.Bronner for my dishes. My one complaint is that I still have greasy residue left in my sink and on dishes.
why cant it be substituted? I've seen this same recipe using that napa soap, kirks, zote and dr bronners. it can be substituted, you can use any grated bar soap that you want to use. and you should use distilled water and not tap water
can I add scent (essential oil) to this recipe? Wasn't sure, also, about the grease-cutting properties of this recipe (is that what's meant by the Ph comment?). Please re-state. Thanks for video!
hi annie i tried this it works .i would like to know does it supose to thicken up ,mines is watery and what can i use ti thicken it a little thank you for this vedio
While simmering the mixture, could U add half the remaining water to Ur container, reserving the other half to rince Ur pan of lather after putting mixture into container? & also rinsing funnel?
That soap is no longer available in stores. And the people that have the last of them are selling them on eBay or amazon for over 7dlls each. I will substitute for Ivory soap.
Thanks for making this video it is really gonna save me money but I have a question I made it and it seems very liquidy is there a way to make it thicker and also can u add something to change the color like food coloring? Thanks!
Annie, Can you use citric acid instead of the super washing soap since your trying to raise the ph level? What about adding some TSP. I have several pounds of the above laying around when I bought it from a farm supplie. And is there a way to thickin it up a little. My G/F loves to waste.
I called the manufacturer that made octagon soap and they said that they no longer make it so i am trying to figure out what kind of soap can i substitute in this since she says in video that you cant substitute it - otherwise i need to find a different recipe to make the dishsoap - any suggestions?
Hello, I tried this recipe using zote soap as you mentioned not having any issues with it but when i wash dishes there is a filmy residue left behind. Is this normal?
Zote leaves a film on dishes like a bathtub ring. I do like it for the laundry soap recipe that I found. They probably discontinued this soap because they want everyone to buy there expensive soap . They probably just bought the product out for the company I would say that Palmolive definitely has an interest in getting rid of it anyone else know any other substitutes besides zote?

I add lemon essential oil and lemon juice which really helps cut grease.

If the washing soda Raises the ph (which it does) then it makes it more alkaline. Great video.
Best I've seen for dish detergent. Thanks!!!!
jee
I use my own homemade Coconut bar soap. So far it seems to work fine
Judy Herman does it leave a film on your dishes?
How you make it
oh, and the pumice soap... i use lava bar, try it on laundry stains for the grease stains! lava bars were designed for oil rig workers, guys at refineries like me so imagine that. its easy to get grease stains out the dishes!
Funny, I found it at my local grocery store today. (Food Lion in SC) It was still $0.97 a bar.

you can substitute octagon for pumice bar soaps... They get stains out like you wouldnt believe! Thanks for the steps!!!
Fels Naptha Soap has lemongrass just like Octagon soap does you can find it in the laundry aisle at Kroger and Walmart.
You may also be able to put some drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract to make it antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungus. Can't hurt to try.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND TO SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH US!!!

good video, you might save some of the water and add it to the pan to get all the soap out. Just a thought.

Raising pH lowers acidity, raises alkalinity.
Right
The Octagon soap is way overpriced today and I heard it's no longer available.
that was very well done just a question is it as good as dawn .
I would pour the hot mixture in first so that I could use the rest of the water to rinse the last of the soap mixture out of the pan -therby getting all the ingredients into the final bottle

When I find Octagon i'll make my dishwashing soap. Thanks for the videos. Keep them coming.
Dear Queentut1977,
I don't have the barcode for Octagon, the only store that sold it near here went under. I've been using Zote soap in the recipes instead without issue. Amazon.com has Octagon as well as Luckymojo. I hope that it helps. You can substitute Zote without issue on this recipe. I like to use a little more of the Zote when I make it.
I have found the Octagon bars at The Vermont County Store.. you get 6 bars for $9.90 and that will last a very long time.. in making liquid soap....
Sorry I have to correct you: raising pH would produce a more alkaline solution, not a more acidic solution.
You're great, Annie, I'm glad I stumbled upon you!
Thank you so much I'm so trying to save money and this will help me out alot. I'm going to make it one soon. Keep up the good work.

Luzvi Germinal I do that, too.
if you can't find Octogon soap in a store, they sell it on Amazon, and Ebay. (its a little more expensive though)

Can you use soap flakes instead of the Octagon soap?
I bought most ingredients on amazon great prices!
Any good Castille soap should work. Ivory soap is pretty pure, and there is a brand you might be able to find in the UK, called Dr. Bronner's.
octagon is no more, they stopped making it, i use castile soap it is also rated for dishes. you can actually turn baking soda into washing soda, you cook it in the over, you can look up how to do that, or ebay.
I don't think it would hurt anything autumnjrain as long as there is enough water to properly allow the bar of soap to melt.
I switched off when I saw colgate octagon soap. What's the point? I need simple easy to get ingredients!
go to walmart and get linda laundry soap
I would think that instead of pouring the water in the jug that was not used in the cooking process you could use that to try to clean up the pan a bit more so you can get even more of the soap into the jug at the end..
Excellent video. I hate spending so much on dishwashing liquid. Thank you.
small correction. Soda wash makes water more alkaline, not acidic. 11.0.
They still make octagon. I just saw it in the grocery store about a week ago.
Thanks so much for sharing. I think It is more healthy and environmentally friendly to use your soap.
Thanks so much for sharing this. Great video.
Colgate no longer produces Octagon soap. It is $159.00 for 3 bars of it on Amazon as of 1/4/2023, so this is out of my price range. Can I use a Dove bar or Zote instead?
You can buy zote at a big lots just found it yesterday
@apbmaxim Ty for that I figured it out a bit with some homemade Dish washer powder but I shall add these to it immeadiately.
Hi. That Octagon soap is going for at least $20 bucks a bar now. Wow
I know you said Octagon, but I cannot get it, so may I use another soap bar rated for diswashing?
Great vidio very informative and easy to understand
Octagon has been discontinued, any idea for a substitute?
You can use Zote soap.
95TurboSol you can buy it on ebay too, but it is so expensive.
Zote or Ivory
if you where to add soap first, then add water to pan and dump in to the bottle would get a lil more out...
thank you for this recipie...
Actually an increase in pH is a reduction in acid and an increase in alkalinity.
You can substitute the octagon soap with dr bronners bar soap.
Wow! dat wuz very kool!! ima try dat this week. Perfect timing 2! im almost out of dish liquid! lol. Thank u Annie!! Great video!!
Thanks for sharing this is very helpful video
I live in the uk and we don't have octagon over here, there must be some substitute available
I realize this is an old vid but now in 2019 that octagon soap is for five 7 oz. bars is...129.00 on ebay!!
why cant it be substituted? I've seen this same recipe using that napa soap, kirks, zote and dr bronners. it can be substituted, you can use any grated bar soap that you want to use. and you should use distilled water and not tap water
@indyniable11 Would you change your opinion if you remembered that only one half of the bar of octagon soap is used in the process?
Where are you from that you can find those items? I can't find Octagon nor can I find washing soda or any store that has a pool section.
can I add scent (essential oil) to this recipe? Wasn't sure, also, about the grease-cutting properties of this recipe (is that what's meant by the Ph comment?). Please re-state. Thanks for video!
hi annie i tried this it works .i would like to know does it supose to thicken up ,mines is watery and what can i use ti thicken it a little thank you for this vedio
While simmering the mixture, could U add half the remaining water to Ur container, reserving the other half to rince Ur pan of lather after putting mixture into container? & also rinsing funnel?
How does it work on oily plastic containers? even Dawn doesn't help me with those oily plastics.
That soap is no longer available in stores. And the people that have the last of them are selling them on eBay or amazon for over 7dlls each. I will substitute for Ivory soap.
Thank you i love this idea. have a bless day
great job. can i use ivory soap if i don't have oct.soap?
Octagon is no longer sold in supermarkets. What is a substitute? Buying online is too costly.
Hey Annie I have a problem here.My dish liquid leaves grease on the dishes any ideas?I followed exactly......hugs
Thanks for making this video it is really gonna save me money but I have a question I made it and it seems very liquidy is there a way to make it thicker and also can u add something to change the color like food coloring? Thanks!
Annie,
Can you use citric acid instead of the super washing soap since your trying to raise the ph level? What about adding some TSP. I have several pounds of the above laying around when I bought it from a farm supplie. And is there a way to thickin it up a little. My G/F loves to waste.
I called the manufacturer that made octagon soap and they said that they no longer make it so i am trying to figure out what kind of soap can i substitute in this since she says in video that you cant substitute it - otherwise i need to find a different recipe to make the dishsoap - any suggestions?
octagon soap is so expensive....
basicly its like laundry soap home made maybe more concentrated correct?
Hello, I tried this recipe using zote soap as you mentioned not having any issues with it but when i wash dishes there is a filmy residue left behind. Is this normal?
Thank you very much for this information.
Romila Lal was
My Grand mother use to make that when i was small
Awesome and amazing thanks for sharing wow THANKS for explaining as you go
Can you add white distilled vinegar to this recipe?
Ivory soap is lemongrass scented too. So is Coca-Cola!
Robert Goodman ivory! Yes
Is half bar the whole soap or half of that?
I know this is an older video, but the colgate's octagon soap is no longer being manufactured or has changed names. Do you have a substitute now?
Zote leaves a film on dishes like a bathtub ring. I do like it for the laundry soap recipe that I found. They probably discontinued this soap because they want everyone to buy there expensive soap . They probably just bought the product out for the company I would say that Palmolive definitely has an interest in getting rid of it anyone else know any other substitutes besides zote?
Thanks for the video. I found Octagon at Velocity Market for .79
can you substute sunlight bar soap for the Octagon soap? I can't seem to find Octagon soap anywhere in Canada. Thanks, April
