Failing Turbo Makes 1st Road Test Not Good- Mack May Never Run

- Join along as we discover that the turbo internal oil leak is getting worse and pushing oil into the engine casing some issues. So a quick swap with the parts truck and its back to the races. A fuel leak on the top side of the engine delays us quickly but we get it sorted and head out on the road only to think the fuel timing is off. With some adjustment its all go and so much better off. Thanks for watching along.

12:47 One of my father's favorite sayings. "If it's got t*tts or tires...it's gonna give you problems". No wiser words have ever been spoken.
I was just thinking the same thing. Don't know how many times I heard this from the old timers. Now that I'm one it still applies. He did get rid of the first one but the tires are really making up for them. LOL!
@@DPCCGM I was told if it's got tits tires or tracks
You could power a windturbine 😊😊
With Yenko riding proud on the air ride seat = In Chris we Trust! 👍👍👍
Hello from Bergen,Norway 🙂🙂🙂🙂 Love the long videos, keep them coming please. 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Eg og e i Bergen 😊
This is better than watching them Stupid shows on TV. keep it up Chris. Farming always a struggle.
Chris just needs the other two stooge's
Soon you will have a brand new truck as time goes on lol. Keep up the great work.
I like the head cam specially, when you’re driving it’s pretty cool
Head set a little dizzying but love the angles! Like you not throwing crew chief under bus lol. It's all about learning. Mistakes teach more than right the first time.
Need to learn how to drive it again..... you have to remember, you didn't have fancy gear shift knobs on it last time.... lol
Looking good on the road! With the copilot on board!
I was taught to step the idle up to a 1000 with the hand throttle. Just a thought good luck
Chris also don’t forget your air leak by the dipstick, also the old Mack 6 speed the old saying was you could smoke a cigarette between shifts 😅, thats the bad thing about the old 6 speed has that leg before turbo spools up for the power to come back. The second run what i could hear it sounded better, turn your idle up to 800 and get your tack cable fixed that will help as well with you watching it when shifting. When you are warming it up idle up to 1200 if you let it slobber it wont get hot enough to burn clean. Trust me i ran Mack’s all my life had 28 of them… nothing is tougher than a bulldog!!!
Unhook the puff eliminator and you won't have the turbo lag
RESPECT! ! !
My heart was in my mouth in the final few minutes of the road test in case something blew up. Can’t believe how good I felt when I saw your towers over the hill and knew you were almost home. 🎉
I enjoy farm videos in the field but enjoy shop videos as I’m doing the same thing right now. Spent most of the day searching for parts and tools.
When you take something apart and put it back together there is always Gremlins they will haunt you for a while until you defeat them and just remember you're learning
Chris keep the faith You're doing great with the truck.Back ib 72 when I started an old Timer said Trucking would be easy and great if there weren't so many moving parts!
I’ve rebuilt and been into alot of engines if there oil or coolant in the exhaust it can take a while to clean it out usually a couple good pulls on it cleans them out
I hope you can get your hot pressure washer going! I can't live without mine. Makes working on equipment so much better!
Nice vid can't wait and when international is on other tank trailer it will be amazing I like the mack r model drove one but I kinda can't wait to see other truck and manure set up the og combo back together again keep up the good vids Chris
Tighten the bolt and the nuts for the gasket maker sit . Me and my brother are mechanic for for 22 years and going strong .
That was great Chris lot of quick fixes but we are getting there thank you for sharing and your time.
Hope all is good Chris. Thanks video. Have a good day.
You'll be fine with it put a load on it and clean it out. It seems to have good power.
Time to send that turbo to Ariad Diesel Service as always enjoy your videos
Hope that in the end it all works out. Keep up!
What do you mean, the Mack may never run! Never give up, you'll get it going! Nice parts truck, see, you got your moneys worth already! All's well that ends well!
Loved the road trip, keep going at the wrenching
Keep up the awsome content chris your doing great keep the head cam lot of great content you post I watch big 👍👍👍👍
That's a good one, " the turbo gets a little warm. " yep, it does....😅
Good to see the old girl back on the road.
I had a Cummings lost the turbo and Cummings in Hubbard Ohio put a new one on it was a big cam 400 they put that baby on the dyno and wound it right up tight he said he could burn out the oil in the mufflers and after cooler faster then me taking it on the road he had the oil blue smoke flying lol 😂. Great video stop playing with you're timing it's a good way to burn a piston ... I still love the 300+ the one I drove ran as good as my 400 Cummings 👍👍👍😎😎😎
Sounds good just have to work the kinks out it takes time may run a little different when you get the top on the air filter
I think it was a great video. My friendly competitor had a superliner, some r models and a u model. The u model was a little hard to get used too. Hes gone on to other makes since then. The trucks went from steel vacuum bodies like your friends septic business to aluminum .The tank manufacturers wont give a warranty on aluminum unless its mounted on air ride.
Nice vid, Duffy. Could you explain the 2 stick in one video… I’ve only ever driven eaton transmissions
Sounds better than 3/4 of the trucks around here. Have fun man
If you use simple green spray on let sit 15-20 min hose it off. You do not need to press her wash it.
I heard the old macks had a antipuff valve for smoke but might have been too much trouble to use them.
It’s a good thing you have nothing else to work on so you can continue to spend time on your hobby😅
My mechanic had me heat up bolt on tensioner on my fan clutch belt adjuster. Then he had me pour cold water on it ,kept doing hot and cold until bolt loosened up.
Yenko seems happy with the Mack
Ah how those real Mack engines make a real nice purr.
To anybody that doesn't know, a leaking turbo is how you get run-away engines. Leaving such a thing on and hoping is a $12k+ mistake.
With all the oil luckily you didn’t have a runaway engine
Geez that truck has problem after problem
It does sound nice
Chris i'm running on inches! I'm sure some one thinks you should go buy a newer truck. When you get that truck in shape , it should last as a farm truck. I've got an old 1 ton I use on my small operation , it's diesel. I need to put an o ring kit on the diesel return system. Your truck sounds good!
The battery is not charging I would make sure you wired that unit in properly I got one of those similar on the boat when the main batteries fully charged it dumps the charge to the other batteries
Been waiting for that ride
A good song for the Mack, is the song Return Of The Mack by Mark Mirrison. 😂😂
That spare motor for some day is looking like today
Smaller turbo should spool up quicker. I had a turbo go on a Mack I was dríving. Accelerating from a stop sign weighing in around 90000. Boom and a grinding noise that sounded like shoving a angle grinder into hard metal till it stopped. Lots of black smoke. Broken shaft!
Head cam is worthwhile.
Long Vids are good...👍
That's why you have it. The previous owner realize it was in the parts deaf spiral. Shit happens buddy
You gotta try the " brick over red Barron pizzas". Gotta be brick over. Best frozen pizza
You’ve yet to say if the motor feels like it has more power with the new head. It should be like night and day difference
I nave a freshly rebuilt Mack turbo rebuilt by D&W Diesel in Worcester but it is from an E6 350 not sure if it is compatible with yours.
Your a helluva mechanic Duffy, you've got the special attention for it man the first video i watched of yours that got me to your channel was tearing apart that big John Deere transmission. That kinda attention to detail is rare now buddy don't fret the let downs on truckin. its always like that that is just what it is man so worth it to run the old stuff its just MADE for the job. and its MADE to be replaced and repaired unlike the more modern rides. I always like a dirty old manual aggressive truck. be it a volvo or a mack or an old international of freightliner. doesnt matter. all those old solid mount, golden days trucks are still shining.
Put field lights where the black out light r
You need one of those bolt heaters so you don't always have to use your torch.
Those things seem very handy.
after 1/2 hr, of opperation retorque head bolts
hang in there...
Great job Chris !
Never let that Mack idol under 1200 , that’s where all your oil is coming from
If that's true what is causing that to happen? Is it a crankcase breather or piston ring sealing issue?
You definitely need Jake's great work
Id say it's pushing oil on 1,2 and 3 due to the new head.
The only looking around you was doing while driving, was checking your mirrors, which any good driver, is suppose to do.
At least the timing is right. Better now than when you’re loaded and trying to make a dollar.
By the looks of exhaust manifold looks more like coming from cylinders of unburnt fuel or leaking past the rings now that you have a new cylinder head on 1 thru 3, I don't think turbo to blame seeing as last season truck was smoke free except normal acceleration smoke. I wonder if you have a timing issue as last year it was easy cold starting now you have hard starting problems. I,m placing my bet on fuel timing problem. I think 1 thru 3 pushing oil past rings.
What about the combine, have you got any plans for that yet???
Another day on struggle bus farms
I'd love to watch turbo complete rebuild
How much would an upgraded turbski cost, just curious. I know they get pretty pricey on trucks.
The old mack looks and sounds great. You did a great job fixing the old girl. And other than the crash rebuild, I'd call everything else, normal maintenance.
Your LH west coast mirror arm needs to be pushed fwd some better view around trl.
it certanley sounds more powerful wondering if the previous turbo was the correct one for the truck p
It's never going to be 100%
It's an old truck, not enough money to make it 100%
Good luck with what you have
no never know the history of em but sounds better than what it was defo never ending but to be expected its got a good home now getting the love after a hard life no doubt@@burtzorn4059
Need to adjust the steering wheel emblem so we can see the puppy dog straight up and down.
Are you sure the oil isn't leaking from the front cylinders? The oil appears to be coming out of the exhaust manifold and not the turbo. Probably rings in one of the front cylinders. Do not consider the turbos interchangeable either especially if the exhaust turbine and compressor housings are different. They are usaully VERY specific to each engine application and matched to fuel systems and settings etc. Make sure you check with the dealer to see if they interchange as you could be setting yourself up for a whole new set of heartaches.
E6 engine and e7 are usually 100% interchangeable. If I call a mack dealership on a e6 mack it's like talking to the experts on youtube they actually have no idea. And I guess you will have to see if after switching turbo that was feeding oil into the engine it runs properly. Wait actually we showed that at the end of the video that it was running properly
Got to admit I'm really enjoying these longer video's mate, keep up the great work. 🇬🇧
Seems like fix one thing and two others break. Story of old trucks.
You REALLY need to take care of your health. Huffing and puffing after little effort is not good some someone as young as you.
Thing seems like a money pit for you! Luckily you got a paint job done on it. Not like the engine was ever important
Still cheaper than buying another truck, but why do you care so much? Not your money or time spent
33 years working on mack and cummins i can not watch this anymore i tried good luck
Wayne, be honest your first few times working on Mack's you didn't know shit either.
I'm sure he'll manage without your expertise.
See yeah!
Bye... He'll be just fine without your great knowledge 😮
Did you send him a new turbo? If not then you're not helping.
Don’t waist your time rebuilding the turbo yourself. Send it out to get rebuilt. Then you have warranty coverage on. Someone like area diesel services.
I always kick my engine up to about 8 to 9 hundred RPM that keeps the engine temperature up doesn’t load up with oil in the turbo
Agree, first thing I did on my 7.3 was get high idle switch, makes massive difference in cold weather.
Mack semi trucks, never die they just live on in other trucks, that need their transplants which makes them better than before Mr. Duffy you and your team are the Mack, Semi truck doctors of New York,
The worst thing is that you would have to take the whole engine completely out of the semi-truck again just like the Kenworth in the same fashion instead of particular repairs and many more gremlins to find out on the Mack semi-truck.
Both semi-trucks are pretty much at the same stage to get the are talking to you and tell me it is time to work on all of my little gremlins that are making me ill and I Duffy, please fix them and I'll be good again big Red is saying I loved you threw a hard time with your family now it is time to love me know.
Sincerely!
R.S.V.
You can fix that turbo by finding a good machine for can overcome the problem with it .
A machine will over come putting seals in it?
@@DuffyAg yes it will . Plus every thing else that is going wrong with it
@@DuffyAg machine shop
@@DuffyAg they will rebuild it all the way through .
@@DuffyAg they can take out all of the false problems with it will be brand new rebuilt
Are you gonna put Duffy ag stickers on the white truck
He has said he was going to previously, he has a set with white borders for it already.
Love it! Keeping the Ol’ Mack a trucking.
18:35 better inspection cylinders 1 thru 3 are wet in manifold, there's your problem.
Yes as I said it was sending out to them from the turbo
Look into a k31 turbo aka Borg Warner p/n 172743. It’s off of a 12.7 Detroit but works well in other applications.
If you get the landoll lose, try the mack again
I know what you mean I drove truck for 27years there was two or three in the shop all the time.
You can get the turbo rebuilt
hope ya get that mack fixed up. I like the older trucks.
Being around them old 300 series Macks, you should know they are not race fans, them ol gals just love to clunk along at 1800 rpm. and shift between `1200 and 1400 rpm. durring my 49 years on the roads, and allot of off road, I did steer a few old R's in my Days. And found through advice from old timers and what not that them ol Macks will go for ever, and pull for ya at steady low rpm. they do not like high rpm.
They are a hand full...
You need to get turbo off of a E7 427 bolt on to your 300 and it will come alive.
because they all break and when these break and get fixed they just goddamn preform, and they love to work. freakin trucks. lol
light the fires turn the tires dont let er to yer head ya got shit to spread!
Have to come show you how to shift the ole dog ❤😊 love the content.
Hi Chris before I start no I am not self thought mechanic I fully qualified motor mechanic I worked on cars, truck's, and earth moving equipment
For many years rebuild so many cars trucks repaired so much earth moving equipment.
Now your truck gas an air leak on engine or we call it vacum.
Your tako meter is fluctuating and when it stop still for few seconds I notice it's idling high. U would check your vacum with vacum gauge and then try to find leak .Or get that tacometer fixed or replaced get that engine tune in proply it's idling to high and your disel income it's to high that's way it smoking black
smoke . Light smoke is oil burning that is n o t a good sign it could be several things gone wrong.
You don't take care of your trucks what I seen so far only when they stop. And you just repair to get it back on road , with your work truck must be 100% at all time band aid fix is not the way to go I know it cost but that's your fault for letting it go that far. I had my own trucks on road so I know what is
like but if you service them on time re p air when you pick up problem early cost less. So don't tell me or you haven't farmed no I haven't farmed but I did all sorts of truck driving more than you have in your life time you still need to work 30 years before you catch up with me. Guys like you with big chip on there shoulders we call would bee's so don't tell prop l e they don't know if you don't know them I don't know way I watch your chanel but more I watch it n o w more it upsets me just the way you do things the way you carry on . Unorganized is not the word I use, I seen little kids m ore organize than you. I better STOP before I really rip in to you.
I am thinking to sell at you .
You my friend need to take a good hard look at yourself. Have you watched 1000 videos on this channel? Preventive maintenance is very much a part of this farming channel.
I've seen little kids that can put together a much more coherent sentence than that jumbled up, marble mouthed mess you just "typed" up. Back to 2nd grade for you Mr. master mechanic/trucker/everything else!
And just look how much exercise you're getting who needs a treadmill or a bicycle LOL
Hey,let a mechanic work on this older Mack type stuff.
People go to school to do this kind of work.
Pay the money, focus on the total bussiness.
Huh odd I went to school for it. So should I pay my self?
@DuffyAg 😂 😂 I swear so many of these guys are spoiled rotten, never having to fix there own shit.
@mattg1987 ha ha,
I work on my shit, but since I work on my shit it's real easy for me to spot a guy who "cant"wirk on his own shit.
I'm just trying to nicely say DA is a shitty mechanic.
@DuffyAg apologies when.
You just look so stressed dude.
No more,no less
@Wayfarer001 shit most would probably say the same when I work on my stuff, but I always get it done just not maybe the "correct" way.
