  • If your store room is getting filled up with left over bits of fleece that you can't bear to throw away, why not spin up some super bulky yarns with them, and weave a peg loom rug or cushion cover? I'm showing a cushion cover project in this episode, but the principles of this project could also be done just the same for a rug. I also show my peg loom I purchased, but it could easily be a home-made loom, made from scrap wood. This is a very ancient form of weaving going back thousands of years. Often peg loom rugs were (and still are) made without spinning the wool, and with greasy fleece, as sleeping mats, and the grease kept the wool semi-water proof, and stopped the damp rising up to the sleeper. This could still be done for camp beds. So, there are lots of uses for this type of weaving, and also it can be done with stipped rags instead of yarns or fleece.

    If you're like me, you don't throw anything out because I'm too lazy to do any carding or spinning, but I'm thankful there are people on UA-cam who can do it all for me!! Quality editing and an exciting episode!

    What a lovely project to use up that yarn that wouldn't be next to skin soft, very inspiring!

    I’m absolutely loving the colors & textures in your cushion😍 it must be incredibly comfy too. I had to laugh thinking about when I first learned to spin on a drop spindle how my teacher kept emphasizing how to try and be as consistent as possible to create a smooth non bumpy yarn. As with most beginners I ran the gamut of thick to thin and bumps in between. Fast forward to watching you have big amounts winding onto the bobbin and thinking just how cool of an art yarn you’re making and what a huge price it would command in the shops. I can only imagine my instructor’s face😂 I haven’t spun in ages, but really loved it and want to get back to it again. Eventually I’d love to get a wheel. A couple years ago for Christmas, I surprised my bestie with a peg loom I made ( I gifted myself one as well). We’d seen sleeping mats being woven using them and wanted to be able to make and donate them as well. They are a great way to upcycle the plastic grocery bags. I must say the simplicity of the peg loom drew me in and I just love working on it. It also gave me a way to weave without having to have a giant floor loom. There’s just something about weaving along on the peg loom that is so much fun and relaxing. It brought me back to my childhood when I wove the potholders on a frame. I still love that concept of weaving. I’ve seen people on YT who’ve built huge frames and make 5’x7’ rugs on them upcycling t-shirts. Needless to say building one of those frames is on my projects list. I’m sure I’ll have to make 2 as my bestie will probably want one as well😂 I think I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of weaving😂 I want to make a twinning frame too. If it’s fiber arts, I’ve definitely tried it, want to try it, or will be trying it asap. As the saying goes it’s cheaper than a therapist. 😂😂😂 Looking forward to watching more of your videos - just subscribed. The scenery where you live is absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from FL😺

    What a perfect use for the leftover bits of fleece. I also found a new appreciation for simple peg looms thanks to this video. I really enjoyed the tension modification you came up with for the warp strings. Happy spinning and weaving to you.

    I have a whole woolshed full of wool 🥹
    It’s just not worth sending to auction 😢😢
    Been like this for about 6y now!
    I do spin some of the softer fleeces (I also had Gotlands) but our weather makes the wool prone to cotting.
    I think your project is beautiful!!!!!
    ((Another craft on my list, perhaps 🤔🤔))

    Hello from the state! Your video just popped into my feed today and I love your covers!! I have been thinking about making a peg loom for myself. My retirement plans were to learn to spin and weave. I do spin and think the peg loom will be a good fit for me. I have a rigid heddle loom that I haven't used yet (that's a long story)! I wove baskets for 30 or so years but weaving with fibers is a whole new arena. Looking forward to more videos from you!

      Thanks debbie! Yes it's a delightful hobby. If you are making a peg loom, I would advise you look for a hard wood as it is more durable. Also, if you can make the pegs a little longer than the standard pegs available (like I have), then you can weave a bigger section before moving the warp on. Happy spinning!

    Can I ask what wheel you spun the yarn on for this project. I’m hoping to start spinning soon , I haven’t a clue what wheel to get to learn on but I do know that chunky and art yarn is what I want to spin. Just came across you today and have definitely subscribed .. Love what you do .

      @@lindacalver773 this was spun on the ashford country spinner. They also have a bulky electric spinner, but i personally prefer foot power for bulky yarns. There are others on the market, but ashford is probably most available world wide, and quite reliable.

    How would you clean it..

    • @highlandcolours7675
      @highlandcolours7675  7 місяців тому

      You can soak a rug like this in a big bath of very hot soapy water, drip dry outside on flat surface, then put somewhere for heat to get it thoroughly dry. But wool repels dirt, and you shouldn't need to clean it that often.

    Thank you for sharing your processes here. I love that super bulky textured yarns and the peg loom seems perfect for it. Do you think it could be done on a rigid heddle, give an large enough reed?

    • @highlandcolours7675
      @highlandcolours7675  Рік тому

      Hi there! Thanks for your comments. I think that you might be able to simulate something on the rigid heddle, but it's a different type of weaving. The chunky bits of the weft I'm using really need to be fed through the pegs one at a time. I think that would be difficult on a rigid heddle warp. Also, the resulting woven piece on the peg-loom is very dense and spongy because there's not really any tension on the warp and the wrap disappears, which wouldn't happen on the rigid heddle. So if you are looking for the same 'look' then I'd say probably not... but..you could try it and see! let me know!

      Hi, you are asking what length are the posts and how far are they buried in the board? My pegs are 12cm, and they go in about 2.5cm. But some people like to have longer pegs, so if you are making one yourself, I would make them a little longer if you can. Say about 15 to 20 cm in length? This way you can do more weaving before you pull it off. Hope that helps!

    You did not have the mike in a good place as it was barely audible. That would have improved it. Nice pillow top, but I had to l stop watching because of the poor audio component.
