      I used ammonia vapors in a closed vessel

    • @bkmesser
      @bkmesser 7 років тому +1

      Koss I've tried this trick after reading this comment because I really like the way this aged brass looks.
      It didtn't really work out (the brass still remained shiny) but the wooden handle of my knife now smells terribly like ammonia...
      What did I do wrong?

    • @Koss-channel
      @Koss-channel  7 років тому +6

      Dont worry the smell will disappear. The brass must to get aged after 20min ammonia vapors influence, if this really brass you use. Make sure that brass doesn't covered any oil or other finish you use on handle. And better degrease it.

    • @nogamegaming6852
      @nogamegaming6852 6 років тому +2

      Milo Man you can see at around 12:27 that he is putting the blade in a bottle. The bottle most likely has an acid in it that corrodes the outside of the blade, making it oxidize and turn black.

    • @k-entertainment
      @k-entertainment 6 років тому +4

      That would be a very dilute solution of ferric chloride; it's often used in damascus projects to allow the grain of the steel to be seen via etching. You can also use a cold blue solution, but here he used a dilute ferric chloride solution I believe. You need to wear gloves to use both and wipe off excess with acetone after bathing in water. Both will work; albeit cold blue gives a more (hence the name) blue-grey finish to the metal.

    Beautiful piece thats for sure the only concern i will have is at the begining you show its 60 hrc but thsn u put grinder to it to cut it out and never heat treat it , i bet ur temper is off now from ur grinding heat transfers! :) love the idea with the pomel.

    • @JohnSmith-tz9qf
      @JohnSmith-tz9qf 7 років тому +1

      Casey McCracken I presume it was pretempered.
      If you start this video again in the first seconds you see a "60 HRC" written on the steeel plate.
      Watch closer next time

    • @robertgiggie6366
      @robertgiggie6366 7 років тому +4

      that is true, but I believe he ruined the temper by cutting it with a cutoff wheel like that

    • @user-pr2fy2oi5k
      @user-pr2fy2oi5k 6 років тому +2

      to robert. hello, no he didn't if you look better, you'll see that he spray some water several times with a brush to cool down the blade. also he made many cuts with low depth instead one but deep. He is know what he do

    • @robertgiggie6366
      @robertgiggie6366 6 років тому +5

      repeated heating and cooling ruins the temper, that's why in machine shops we use continuous coolant, if the metal is too hot to touch you have ruined the temper

    • @ecidemon5672

    • @bryanelwell3470
      @bryanelwell3470 7 років тому +1

      It's an etching solution, most likely ferric chloride. You can find it at electronics stores because it's used for etching circuit boards. When making knives, ferric chloride is used to darken the blade (and make it look cooler) but more importantly increase the rust resistance of the blade

    • @Koss-channel
