As usual this term 'the squad' was originated and is perpetuated by the news media. It was coined by New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd who used it in an interview with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The news media loves to use nicknames to lessen or diminish the influence of Democrats. Just in the same way the news media perpetuates all the negative nicknames given to people that Trump dislikes or disagrees with. Which with the continued negative nickname usage in the press reduces the impact and presentations of all of Trump's opponents. As sadly, the American public identifies Trumps opponents with their respective negative nicknames rather than their policies or beliefs. So in large part thank the American news media for Trump being our president.

Well considering three of the four are natural born citizens, where exactly would they come back from? I also have this for fun: according to Trump logic, he inadvertently called the United States corrupt and inept three times; therefore, complaining about the same thing he has done.
They missed it intentionally because in that part he also talks about supporting Nancy Pelosi. Trump has often spoken fondly of her. I don't think CNN wants people to start wondering why.
