in case if we want to retube the exchanger, and if the thickness of t he spare tubes available in the warehouse is (say 4mm) a bit more than the nominal thickness as per the data sheet say (3 mm ) , how can we determine if that can be allowed or not ?

Mechanically it should work, but thermally it will negatively impact the heat transfer across the tube wall. In this case you need to verify the adequacy of the thermal performance / heat duty of the exchanger

what if we enter a higher thickness value ? can we find out a maximum thickness allowed ?

Usually thickness is identified during thermal design as it contributes in the heat transfer Calculations
This check can be used in either during obtainable design to confirm the adequacy of the assumed thickness as per code
Or to verify the min thickness to be compared with the inspection findings and support in the decision for plugging or retubing

@@baherelsheikh4942 currently we are planning to retube, but the available tubes thickness is a bit more than what we have in the exchanger data sheet , did some calculations and found that the area of the inner tube diameter is 20% less in that case

@@inaraamatullah4449 minor thickness change practically should not have great impact on the heat transfer. But ideally, you need to verify the thermal design /performance of the exchange. HTRI or Similar simulation software can be used for that.
