      I did hear one or two distress calls from the parent birds when the cats were there, but overall it sounded and looked like it was ok in the end. An update from the person who filmed would be helpful. Edit: it seems the birds fledged fine later that day, the poster did leave a message about the birds wellbeing so spot on for me.

    There are plenty of livestream here on YT about tits nesting- it’s astonishing how much work it is for the bird parents to raise their young ones. It’s a tragedy when these birds are killed by a cat, just because the cat is bored and needs some distraction. Cats and birds should just be kept away from each other, there is nothing, absolutely nothing cute about cats who are interested in birds.

  • @clearpass5001
    @clearpass5001 3 роки тому +4

    Dear Sir, every minute the cats were nearby, are minutes, when the parents BlueTits didn't feed the baby fledgling. Plus, these babies must have fledged too early, their plumage is too short, their tails are too short, they can hardly fly and they need constant feeding and sleeping. The nestbox must have been too shallow. It must be much deeper, so that chicks can only fledge when they are more developed and fully ready for living outside. These nestlings stayed mostly on the ground, instead they should be flying easily in the trees, if they fledged not so prematurely..
    So I do need to give you two advices, dear friend.
    1. Make a deeper nesting box, so the chicks can only fledge then they are fully ready (21st day), so they cannot fledge by accident. This means that the hole must be high above the floor and the nest cup inside (at least 20-30 centimeters or 10-12 inches); and
    2. Please always keep the kittens/cats inside when nesting season. Little chicks need to be fed every 30 minutes. A cat around, even if it is very friendly, scares mom and dad, and they cannot feed the chick on schedule. Fledglings are fed by the parents for at least 2-3 more weeks outside the nest. So each missed feeding, means the chick is losing weigth, starving, getting weaker, etc.
    I am not blaming you, I do not mean anything bad. We all make mistakes and learn from them. The video is not bad, and I hope the chick has grown up and has made it, even though the dangers it has been through. Thanks. Cheers!
    PS. Technically - good camera work, good focus, good quality.

    Oh, no! NEVER leave a cat near a bird! This could be fatal and tragic for the bird. It's not the cat's fault, it's its nature. But as a human being who takes care of birds, you always need to bear this in mind.

    Blue Tits currently nesting in our garden and my curiosity of what the chirping chicks look like is what brought me across this delightful video recording. • @MoogieSRO
    @MoogieSRO 2 роки тому +3

    Here's a slightly different perspective: By letting the chicks get used to having a 'friendly' cat around, they are less likely to survive their next encounter with an UNfriendly cat... because they'll be more inclined to trust it. Never forget that our actions, even the smallest ones, can have repercussions beyond our immediate knowledge or understanding. Cats are non-native. They are invasive. They kill wild native populations of all sorts of birds and mammals, and if you keep cats as pets, they should not be allowed to free-roam. Period. It's time we collectively dumped the antiquated belief that cats don't belong on leashes, and start taking responsibility for the impact our choices have on the environment. Thanks for reading.

    It's a well shot video, but I read your piece, in response to previous comments, and what you obviously fail to realise is that what you are doing here is teaching these fledglings that cats are no danger to them. Your cats might mean them no harm, but by your own admission, other cats (like your neighbour's) would kill them instantly. Throughout this video you can hear the parent bird's alarm calls, but the fledglings are to young to know better. From this moment onwards, these fledglings will think of cats as being no threat to them. This was a really bad idea!

    no wonder they didn't show it. The baby blue tit was terribly stressed and was being harrassed by two cats. You may not have found it particularly worrying but you had no guarantee that your cats, nice though they may be, would not have unintentionally accidentally harmed that baby bird. It looks like baiting. The bird was so stressed that it had to put it's head under its' wing because it was so tired from the stress you put it under. I'm not at all surprised that this was not shown. Most cats that other people have would not react like that and even picking the bird up out of curiosity which the cats may well have done if left alone with the bird long enough, would kill it. Cat saliva is toxic to birds and even a scratch from a claw will kill a bird if it is not given antibiotics.

    what a strange video. I can't honestly say I enjoyed it except the early bit. I loved those early pics, especially with a sweet looking cat BEHIND a door in the kitchen. I can see why you thought it ok for the cats to be filmed with the chicks, looked cute etc and you obviously love them (and care about birds). But as others have said, distressing to watch, (although some comments have been positive). Just goes to show how diverse humans are! You have had some strong (and offensive) comments. It's amazing what people will say online. But cats and birds co-existing? Not really. The chicks had to put up with a lot, but maybe they were saved from the neighbours cats. What a precarious world birds live in, no wonder many species are in decline.

    Mrculps, I believe wholeheartedly that you never meant harm to these birds, and until the cats make their entrance this is beautiful footage. I really enjoyed watching it.
    I also totally agree with you that not all 'assumed' enemies will act to stereotype. But... I think you're missing the point as to why people get upset about this video.
    The point is, you were taking the risk.
    One of the cats was actually in stalking mode, and while it only played with the chick, at any moment it could have suddenly struck with its claws out or gone to bite the chick and you may not have been able to stop it happening.
    I don't think everyone is assuming the cats will definitely attack, but we all know that cats cause devastating losses to our song birds every year, and I hope that most people, on finding fledglings in this position would have not wanted to take the same risk that you did.
    Had one of the chicks been hurt, I'm sure you would have been really upset and it obviously wouldn't have been intentional, but it would have been avoidable - and that is the point.
    Hopefully you would act differently if in the same situation again. There is some beautiful footage like I said (before the cats), so thank you for that... :)
    A few people have made this very same point, so I hope you understand what we're trying to say now... :)

  • @starb9138

    Absolutely appalling that you let cats so near them! They are confused and terrified when they leave the nest, and they beg for parents attention and to reassure them and you just let them get even more terrified. And how do you think parents felt seeing a cat around their babies???
    Terrible!

  • @gemmashepherd3563
    @gemmashepherd3563 Рік тому +1

    I understand that you trust your cats, I do, but I think the key issue here is, the baby is very impressionable and if it doesn't have to fear your cats, it wouldn't know to fear others. Also, all the time your cat was there, the parents would be stressing about their baby and unable to feed it. Baby blues tits need around 100 feeds per day, whilst they're still fed by their parents and the time the cat took away from the baby, could have been damaging and a waste of valuable time, energy and resources by the parents.
    At the end of the video, you could hear the adult bird, giving a stress signal. You were inadvertently beng seriously cruel and watching the chick, face to face with a cat, did you notice it's chest. You shouldn't be able to see a bird breathing like that, you probably helped enormously, by shortening it's already short life.
    This is not meant to be a nasty comment, I honestly believe you had no idea what anguish you were inflicting on this poor bird family.

    This time of the year (May and June) I'm on tit patrol in the garden. Always get a few that fledge and crash land in the back garden, then attract next doors cats, so as soon as I see the cat(s) in my garden I know there's a fledgling out there somewhere and the cat's get shooed out and then I try and spend the day watching out for the baby tits. Lost a few to the cats but also helped a few to gain strength and fly up into the trees.

    even if your cat is well behaved... cat claws can contain a lot of bacteria, and even a light graze from a cat can cause a fatal infection for tiny animals like this. responsible pet owners who own both well mannered cats and small birds or rodents know to prevent any contact between them. irresponsible owners usually allow it becuase of the disbelief that the two animals can "get along". and theirs many owners who carry the "my pets are special" to blanket carelessness. its different to google "bird and cat co-exsisting" and "can birds and cats co-exsist?" and seeing how clearly their needs to be no physical contact between the two animals in order for them to be under the same home.

    how about an update?
    im guessing because the cats were let out and the parents saw the cats at some point, the fledglings were possibly abandoned, and id have been supprised if 1 of the 2 left int he garden would have survived anyway, not to mention even if the fledglings did fine, now they may be less curious of cats and will probably end up as cat food because of that, even very well fed cats will kill out of sport, my parents cat the kindest cutest cat, fed extremely well, would kill anything in the garden purely for fun, and they didnt (and still dont) have a bird table or feeders, though the cat died of old age a few years ago.

    Why would you think that BBC would use this footage? Your cats ruined the video! NOBODY wants to see your cats harassing a fledgling!

    Dude stop stressing out the parents and the babies. Don’t hold them or let your cat near them!

    birds are just adorable...however I would NEVER trust my cats around them...I do not think you are a bad person at all and you obviously are fond of animals..just not the best decision with the cats

    • @captainboing
      @captainboing 7 років тому +7

      agree with this. obv you like the animals but it is also clear the cats were excited by the birds movements and were stalking them. This will have caused problems for the parents of the chicks who are not so niaive as the babies and you risk them being abandoned. Great footage, just keep your cats in around fledging time.

      Yesterday one of my cats brought a dead body of blue tit baby and I rescued one baby from my other cat's mouth. It was so devastating. My cats are looking for birds to kill which I hate and I have decided to move blue tit's wooden home from my garden now.

      Why not keep your cats indoors; safer for them and wildlife.

      Wonderful footage!
      Different cats, different behaviour...some cats simply don't want to kill little birdies. For nearly 30 years I live with cats, some like only mice and some only want birds, some only want to play and sleep...and some kill everything what's not fast enough.
      Sated with food doesn't change anything. Cats are natural born killers.
      Well, nature is sometimes rough.

    Thanks for sharing! My daughter and I watched your film with glee. We have cats and one brought us a tiny baby blue tit this morning. We have tried the advice 'leave it in the bushes' but this afternoon it was still there. So home feeding it is...

    thankes god and your queen, you are not living in croatia. in case u live, activists for animal rights would grab you and teach you valuable lesson which your parents did not. offcourse you would pay also few thousand euros law penalties because that birds are protected by law.

    that is brilliant footage, well done! must be a very well fed cat not to bother with the little fledgeling , or a clueless one.. but next time it might feel like eating it.. cats eat MANY fledgelings, feral cats are a real menace to many species :(

    Fluffy little birbs sleep everywhere ! so lovely
    it seems their parent birbs also knew cats are gentle and just curious. They built their nest in his garden despite they knew there were two cats in the house. I enjoyed the video so much. Thank you for uploading this lovely video and don't mind the offensive comments

    That is the coolest video, I love how the cat wants to play with the little chicks. Although I think I would be wary for that cat, those look like ninja chicks, and the poor cat might get his eye poked out.!!!

    What a complete knobhead to let that happen AND to film it! Most people who show cruel tendencies like this go on to be serial killers! It's a fact.
