10:08 I’m mixing a song with live drums for the first time. I use SSL channel on most things. I was trying to get rid of cymbal bleed on the snare with the build in gate on SSL. I could not get the bleed out without killing the snare sound. Then I thought, dynamic issues require dynamic fixes. This trick worked. Amazing!
automating the threshold to kill the string squeak is a great tip. i usually use a de-esser and try to zone right in on the offending frequencies, but it can kill the frequencies you want to keep in if you set it too hard. i'm gassing for that SSL multiband as well, but i'll wait for it to go on sale!
What a fantastic video. I have been in home and professional studio audio production for about 25 years and this is absolutely one of the best i've seen. Cheers, Legend!
Pro-MB in dynamic mode is actually a dynamic eq, it doesn't split the bands (unlike minimum phase mode which does split the bands). Nice vid! Great ideas
I've always been weary of multi-band compression for a number of reaons, but this demonstration shows it can be a very powerful tool! I tend to use dynamic EQ instead but I will surely give a try to all these techniques. Thank you!
Your tips are all great. Many I've learned the hard way but it's great too see your solutions to very common issues. Great channel. I rely on Pro-MB alot myself. Another one is Focusrite FAST Reveal. It has a fast mode or detailed mode it's great to for frequency specific ducking.
Thanks man! I've been looking for a straightforward multiband compression video. I'd been eyeing that SSL multi-band comp for a while too. I love the fact that you can set specific things on the frequency graph just by dragging around with the mouse instead of using the knobs. That's pretty cool!
Always had questions about this topic and it always seemed rather daunting top tackle. Will def apply this in my coming mixes. BTW Rhys; you mentioned in your studio tour about the whole mic thing and recording in GB and Logic at the same time. There is a much easier way: Download OBS, assign a screen record device, assign the mic from the interface, the screen capture and also your camara and you would be recording all of them literally at the same time. All in a single file you can import into CapCut (or whatever you are using to edit). No syncing audios no latency, everything recorded all at once. The draw back is it requires set up in order to get all the levels right since you won't be able to separate them after the fact. But this is what streamers do in order to get everything at the same time.
Thanks mate! I’ll definitely look into that. I do like having the ability to adjust the vocals and audio examples separately, surely there is away to get them as seperate stems? Hmm
@@spinlightstudios There might be to be honest but as is, it is all in a single file and stereo audio file. There is a LOT of videos on the subject so I assume you will def be able to find out quickly. I myself just do the set up so signals are as I want them before recording too. I am sure you will figure it out m8!
Those subtle changes on the mix buss made a big difference. The MB is still the one thing I have trouble understanding such as why would you boost a band high but also reduce its threshold? I don't understand that part. It's like boosting a frequency but also lowering it?
Hi friend, which drum sample packs have these kick, snare sounds from the song you mixed, country made by Jake Davey?? I'm interested in this incredible sound of drums. The dollar is very high here in Brazil, if the dollar value was the same in reais as here, it would be incredible, congratulations, your mixes are excellent.
Hey Mate! Thanks so much! I used some of my “one shots vol. 1” samples blended with the real drums. If you join the mailing list you should receive a discount towards a purchase if that helps! When you visit my site an email subscribe form should pop up shortly after.
The challenge I have when mixing, is knowing where to listen for issues in EQ. How have you gone about training your ears to hear issues that need EQ treatment?
It just takes time... listening to lots of music on your monitors - getting to know your monitoring is the only way you can make good decisions with EQ.
Hi Rhys. Off topic question if that's okay... if you were to use only a SSL G bus compressor and Pultec EQ on the mixbus, which would you put first? Thanks heaps!
Hmm honestly either way will work, it probably depends if you are compressing the mix bus heavily which you would put first. If you don’t want the compressor to react to the EQ moves, you might prefer to use it after. For example if you’re boosting some low end and it’s making the compressor work harder.
@@spinlightstudios Okay, thanks. I was thinking only 1 or 2db of reduction with the compressor - will experiment and try both ways. Loving your content btw.
Thanks for the videos Rhys. I've noticed in a few of your videos that you often create a track lane for your auxiliaries then move it in and out of the track stack folder. I can't seem to find an explanation as to why you do this? Maybe you don't and I'm just not paying attention. All the best.
Sometimes if I make a send/bus I add it to the global window and by dragging the channel out of the track stack and back in, it changes the output of that channel to the track stack. Usually when I create a new send it goes straight to stereo out. This is just a quick way of getting the output to change to the track stack without having to look and change the output manually. Hope that makes sense.

But then you would end up with an awkward silence? doing it this way, only the High frequencies get duck and the low end remains intact and it sounds natural still.

Rhys, you have the gift of teaching. God bless you man !
Thank you Garth 🙏🏼
the best MB compression tutorial in whole internet Love you
Haha thanks legend 😘

Thanks man! Sneaky automation is always good! I keep forgetting how good that ssl multi comp sounds, need to use it more often!
Yeah the de-esser is a keeper. Sounds very smooth.
Promb is actually a really good de-esser 😅
Love it! Thanks brother✌️
Thanks legend!

Cheers Ken! Much appreciated!
Simple but so effective 🫡🤌🏾
Always the way!

That’s great man! Let me know how you go :)
These are some great examples. Can't wait to try the room mic technique.
Thanks man! Hope you find them useful!
Nice . It did take out some of the beauty from the violin sound so I would only apply it to that part . But the demonstration is good

That ssl multi bus comp is pretty awesome!
the snare part was great! love it
Thanks Mate!
Very powerful stuff. I use it very often for my orchestral percussions like Timpani in order to control dynamics of this very specific instrument.
That’s awesome!

Need a go to industry vocal mix process from you goat
Not a bad idea!
pure gold!
Thanks mate!
thank you for the content, really enlightening

It makes the frequency range more consistent, it brings up the highs and compressors anything that jumps out.

those drums sound sick
Thanks!

Isn't there a phase cancelation at x overs? What about linear phase for mixbus?

@@spinlightstudios thank you chef
would be the same result using a pro q 3 in dynamic mode? thanks
Not quite, I find dynamic EQ to be a little slow compared to what Pro-MB can do.
Great video, whats the name of the pop punk song you are working on at the end?
I think it’s called Awake, but I don’t know if they have released it yet.
Jake Davey !
great artist.
He is very good!

The "legends" salute is killing me 😂 thanks man for always sharing your knowledge!
Haha gotta have that trademark intro 😂😂 thanks mate!
Those drums tho!
Thiccc
Clip gain those guitar squeaks- gone

If engineers don't sound like this I'm not interested. Lol
