Giác Thanh
Vietnamese Zen master and poet (1947-2001)
Giác Thanh, born in 1947 in the quiet and remote village of Sóc Son in Rạch Giá province, was the third child in a family of three sons and two daughters. In 1967, he became a novice monk at Thành Hoa temple in the village of Tấn Mỹ. In July 1981, he fled Vietnam by boat, crossing the dangerous Bay of Thailand. In 1991, he began living in Plum Village.
In 2000, he became abbot of Deer Park Monastery in the United States. Giác Thanh knew that this place would be the last of his life. That is why he used all his remaining strength to build the beloved community, expressing his gratitude to his teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh. His illness ended up endangering his life, and eventually, like the cycle of birth and death of all phenomena, he returned the impermanent body to Mother Earth. As enlightened beings say before stepping into ultimate freedom, “The most important task has been accomplished. Giác Thanh passed away in the fall of 2001.
