Jason, your modes lesson is one of the best I have seen. Clear and concrete use of modes in real playing. Bravo! Thanks for sharing. 👍🙂
Thanks so much Jayagopi!
Yawn 🥱
The context you’re providing here is so helpful. Understanding it conceptually and seeing it used in context are very different and you provide both. Great work!
Awesome Andrew! Glad it was helpful!
Finally I understand the purpose of modes and how to use them
Glad you did, Alan! Thanks for watching!😄
I frequently revisit this, for Jason’s playing and simply the best explanation on modal flavors out there. Thank you 🙏 so much!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for the support
This is the best video I’ve seen on modes yet. Thank you.
Wow, thanks so much Mickey!
Can't wait to try this tomorrow on the piano!! Thanks so much!
That's killer! Have fun 🤩
Excellent instruction,... I watch these lessons in full with a notepad no keyboard, then watch again with keyboard, pausing at points of instruction, then I watch again with a chord/scales book.... works 100%
Awesome! Thats always a great strategy!
This is the most helpful information I have learned in 10 years
Wow! Thanks so much Keith!

Very useful session. Thank you Jason ji.
So nice of you Kishore! Always welcome!
This is the best modal lesson I've seen yet
Thanks so much! Means a lot!
Awesom lesson. Oh man there are so many beautiful lessons to learn. I could sit at the piano and practise for hours. It's very easy to get lost in everything. But luckily I am disciplined and learn with structure, but at the end of all the exercises I always allow myself to experiment with your beautiful lessons. And no idea why, but somehow my soul seems to feel so comfortable with your sounds. I get up from the piano every time with such a beautiful feeling and joyfully walk the dogs and sing. Thank you so much for everything.
Most welcome! Keep at it! Will continue to do my best on the channel!
the ending solo is very beautiful!
Thanks a ton Bo!

@@nathanielschool Just a quick question on the membership. Would the structured video lesson membership is good for beginners? Thanks a lot!
Absolutely amazing.. Your musical knowledge is stupendous. We are blessed to listen and watch your program and youtube videos.
Wow, thank you Shashank!
Jason, a natural musician.
Thanks a ton. 🤘
This may sound like a harsh comment, but sorry I have to say it. Why are tutorials from Indian people always so much better then American tutorials. This tutorial was so good!
Thanks a ton Levin! Keep supporting!
Great lesson 🙏
Glad you think so Karthick!
I'm just beginning and learning my scales. You just gave me another homework assignment in this language of music. It's like you said, why wait several years and call this advanced music theory?
Merci beaucoup.
Wonderful!
Thank you!!!!
My pleasure!😇

Awesome! Most welcome! Will keep the notes coming. They are all available on Patreon!
Awesome tutorial about modes Jason. This video provides a lot of information on how to use modes in making music. Cheers🥂
Glad to hear Pasan. Have a few more lessons planned on this sort of Theory. Will be preparing more lessons. Do stay tuned!

This video is very useful to understand the diatonic chords of modes and apply to use it in the music. Especially classic musician like me, Thanks!
Glad it was helpful Miki!
You have made a very complex topic very understandable and for that I thank you. Awesome video. A must see for anyone wanting to learn to compose or solo.

STILL MANY MANY SONGS I PLAY.
I certainly adore your lessons. If I understood modes correctly, you can take the white keys and the white-key-chords for all modes, but your tonic changes - D-Minor is tonic for dorian, E minor for phrygian, F major for lydian and so on. I find modes easier to understand if I think about them this way. A lesson explaining typical chords or melodies for the modes using only the white keys would be very interesting as well. Thank you for all your inspiration!
Awesome Klaus! This method looks at Modes at their own scales, having no neccessary relation to the Major Scale. This bring out their unique flavour by identifying the unique note!
@@nathanielschool Yes, I see what you mean. Maybe a lesson about modes with the C major chords (but different starting notes) would show what to avoid in modal music, or how to sound modal albeit using the C major chords. I will transpose the C Tonic to other starting notes and use your instructions. Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much for all your kindness in providing excellently thought and executed lessons...
Bohat zabardast aur shaandaar (urdu)
Wonderful lesson Jason. Would be amazing if you could recommend some indermediate level songs that I could practice to improve my command over the piano
Supergood
Thanks much Sandor!
Great video as always. If you don't mind me asking, what program are you using to display the notes that you are playing on the keyboard??
By the way, you are my favorite piano channel on youtube. Ive been playing for about 30 years, but one of the things that i love about piano is that there is always something more to learn or improve on. I've gained many usefull tips from your videos. Thanks
Thanks a ton Mataleo! Using a lot of apps. Maybe I should make a video on the tech I use. The app for the notes is usually Chordie by Matkat music
I so wish I had started my music journey with you as an teacher. I have learned so much since I started using your site. While this particular subject is maybe a little more advanced for me at this time, I will most deffinatly be slowly injecting it’s concepts and practices into my learning program!!! THANK YOU!
Wonderful Robin! Do stay glued to the channel. Will continue to do my best with new videos, lessons & courses!
The way I find easier to think about it is to play another scale from the same root. So C dorian is just a Bb major that starts from C. Or C Lydian is G major played from C.
Awesome suggestion. However, this lesson focusses on using these modes as scales on their own. Without any prior reference to something Major or Minor
@@nathanielschool Yes indeed, thanks for sharing! Great content an practical suggestions all the way ;)
So basically , relative modes are temporary scale shifts ? For few bars. And since there is no key signature change as the sharps or flats are the same itslf.
So , key signature notations (the flats and sharps in the staff start ) are defined only for few scales like major minor etc. baaki all the scales are defined as mode wrt to the parent scale. Ryt ?
Yes! You can also watch this video to learn more about this - What are Relative & Parallel Minor Scales? (Music Theory Tutorial)

Jason, I’m trying to figure out what is the difference between Phrygian and Ab scales, or Ionian and Eb scales, since they have the same flats, 4 and 2 flats, etc?? You have the c in the base...is that the difference from the major scales, I don’t think so, becuz c is used in major, so, really, there is no difference? Please. Thank u, bro, I love this video, thank u, thank u!
Most welcome!
Sir at 6:30 I didn't get that , combination of minor 3rd with a major 6th? How? Not getting that, Can You please explain it again or in different way.
And yes thanks a lot sir for all this informative videos , i m learning lot of things in MUSIC , Day by day watching you🙌🙏.
These 2 intervals make it sound very DORIAN and give it it's unique flavour. Try to see my other lessons on Modes. Like this one: ua-cam.com/video/w2gCx0ulWiQ/v-deo.html
@@nathanielschool Thanks.
Hi, whats software that he is using to denote chords?
Chordie by Matkat music
Thank you for the Modes video Jason, learning a lot from your channel.
I have a question, it might not be related but am not sure though. I have seen videos on Cinematic composition orchestral music, and noticed how they compose with so and so keys/chords/scales for the various instruments used, and in one of the videos the chords used where 'D min, F, C, G min and G Major', now, does Modes helps in borrowing chords from other scales, so to create a complete sounding composition? Just curious as to how to they make the overall composition sound meaningful. Hope the question is not confusing.
We need to do one lesson on Borrowed Chords. Will plan. However, this lesson covers at bit. Please watch: ua-cam.com/video/gczKhShkdTI/v-deo.html
@@nathanielschool thank you so much Jason, I'll look forward for it ... Meanwhile I will check out that video, thanks again 🙂
Are these Greek modes? Wow!? My daddy would love that as he’s Greek!
Not entirely sure that they are from Greece! Derived using Maths I guess 🤔
Jascon i have problem to understand ...the perfect fifth or flat fifth every time you say. Is there any playlist that you had introduced the thirds, forths and fifths? can you share the link?
ua-cam.com/play/PLrNNL05e9FT-GHvpugWvYgEuLAL4f01ZK.html See our lessons on Intervals Prashant!
WHY do u have the c in the base, u call drone or write the C in front of modes like a C myxolidian, why, Jason, please?
Tough to explain via chat. Perhaps you should come for a workshop or one of our courses!
Soooo much Elton John like!
Oh yes! A huge isnpiration!
When this dude starts singing. 🧿👄🧿
Waiting for salary Sir, once I receive, then I will donate to your efforts...
modes are confusing. they are indeed scales.
True that!
Speech over practice little and speed... Your talent no help to me.
You're not supposed to copy what he's doing. That doesn't teach anything. You're supposed to listen to the concepts and apply them on your own. He explained everything you need to know in order to work with modes.
Hello again Teacher Nathanael. My questions are as follow:1) When playing in any mode -let say C-Dorian-,in the left hand will it be always recommended to use the tonic only over any chords in the right hand? 2)If no,when to change and how to do the changes? (For example,as we do in C Major for 4 magic chords)
hi Jason thanks for your video - your runs are very fluid - may I ask did you have any rules to help you become fluid ie prepare to pass the thumb by moving it along as the fingers go down, so that it is directly over the note when it comes time to strike the note ? also do you use the "free fall" method [Dr. Marian Lee/Gyorgy Sandor "the 5 basic motions of piano technique"] ie let the hand drop using gravity - : the primary reason I am writing is to ask - I believed that the modes of a scale use only the notes of the original scale - in your first example you say flat the 3rd and the 7th of the original scale for Dorian mode -- which going on the notes of the original scale method what we get is really the Phrygian mode of the B flat major scale ? - also your Mixolydian mode - you say flatten the 7th - using the original scale notes method that is really the Dorian mode of the F major scale --- could you please say what is the method by which you come to find which notes to flatten etc for your modes thank you regards Ian
Wonderful ending….but discouraging that I can’t make anything sound like that
Thank you Jason for those video's.
You explain the theory so easy...
🤘👍
So glad you like them George!
Hearing the first number of chords you played, I was reminded of the sound of "fly like the wind" by Christopher Cross.
Now that you mention it, I hear it too!
Fantastic Jason modes were always very vague. I presume ur based in India do you do residential courses?
Based in Bangalore, but all my courses are now online. You could fill up a form: forms.gle/zjYzJzPyNMon2Dhm6
Anything you play that just totally mind blowing... honestly sir, your creativity level is something, very few can reach. Truly you are a god gifted musician.
Thank you so much Sumit. Your support means a lot 😀
I’ve been putting off trying to understand modes but you’ve made things much easier. A fantastic explanation. Thanks so much 🙏 ❤
Glad you found this video helpful, Will!😊
Thanks Jason, how you describe and give examples using the modes, really really open my understanding bout it. Love this so much 💜
Awesome! Glad it was helpful!
I am not the same after watching this video! Thank You Jason!

Sir , it sounds to me like lydian is yaman and phrygian is bhairavi taking C as Sa in hindustani classical music. Am i right sir ? Thank you for the lovely content btw. 🙏🙏🙏🙏😀😀
I'm no Classical expert Chadakash! But your answer seems bang on!
@@nathanielschool Thank you sir 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Awesome Rezi!
You have a great knack of bringing music theory to life!
So nice to hear. Thanks a ton!
@@nathanielschool hi, why does Emin9 in the key of A minor or E phrygian have an F#? What other 9th chords have to be flattened?
Thank you! I learned a ton
Great to know Erik 🙏🏼
There are so many different ways to absorb the information concerning Modes. This is not only refreshing but an insightful concept.
Well done!
Thanks so much! Will continue to give my best for the channel!
I feel that. Nothing replaces the feel of coming up with a genuinely good idea.
YOU ARE FANTASTIC
Thanks so much Ali!
Thank you
You're most welcome, Delys🙏🏼
I have only just found this channel and commented on the inversions video a few days ago. That video had quite a profound effect and unlocked something that has been locked away for a long time.
Now the same thing happens with modes. I always knew that modes were important for emotional expressiveness, but the traditional ways of teaching this (play the C scale from D to D and it is Dorian) made no sense to me - it just felt and sounded like I was playing the C scale, but just starting on a different note to the root. This truly exceptional demonstration and clear explanation unlocked another door to my understanding.
Once again I am in debt to your musicality and clarity of teaching. Thank you so much.
Last time I said you were 'one of the best teachers on UA-cam' - gotta say - I am amending this to 'you are the best.!
Oh Chris, you are too kind!😊
Thanks so much for listening in and glad that you were able to develop through this content as well✊🏽
Keep at it and you will break through more barriers like this one😃
Practiced a 2/5/1 using the Dorian scale in Bb. It’s a nice reprieve from the blues scale. Thank you
Great to hear!
This here video teaching could get me out of the intermediate level, approaching advanced level, as I’d not only be playing music of others, but starting to compose, WOW, Jason you’re AMAZING!
Glad it helped!
Sir Modes are beyond our fingers🙏🙏🙏
It's a tough topic but keep at it. Perhaps you can consider more beginner lessons on the platform
