John Hughes , usually set his movies in Chicago , Illinois . Winnetka , Illinois is the residential area seen in Home Alone 1 and 2 , Ferris Bueller , Uncle Buck and She's having a baby ... Evaston , Illinois is in 16 Candles and the glass house in Ferris Bueller is in Highland Park , Illinois ... all in Chicago metropolitan area 🙂
National Lampoons vacations movies , with Chevy Chase , are about the father of the family , kids are played by different actors in every movie , they are side characters .
Boss in this movies was played by Bill Murrays older brother Brian and Randy Quaid , cousin Eddie , seem to have gone mad in last years .

Today is my birthday 🎂 Mary and this video has brighten up my day a little thank you 😢😭♥️✌️
As far as Doris Roberts goes..way before Everybody Loves Raymond she was a series regular on a series called Remington Steele
The actress that plays Aunt Bethany, Mae Questel, played the famous classic cartoon characters, Betty Boop and Olive Oyl back in the 30s and 40s. Have a Merry Christmas Mary ❤️🎄🍒
She even reprised her role as Betty Boop in Who Framed Roger Rabbit
@@ARC5555Fives that’s right
Holy cow!! I never knew that but it now makes so much sense!
I was just going to post that!
@@misterprickly sorry lol
This is one of the most popular Christmas movies here in Germany! It's almost a tradition in my family for over 30 years to watch this film at least once at Christmas time!
You really need to see "National Lampoon's Vacation" to 'get' Clark. Plus it's hilarious!
14:57 Mary mistakenly thinking Chicago is New York in reactions has become a running joke at this point. 😜
I was thinking the same thing.
Does she think USA only has 1 big city
@@deckzone3000 I’ve noticed a few non-US reactors instantly assume any heavily populated US city with tall buildings is New York. At least Chicago is the closest in appearance to New York. I saw another non-US reactor that thought Detroit was New York.
As a Chicagoan it is funny, but it also breaks my heart a bit.
To be fair, there aren't many mountains covered in fir trees in Chicagoland. It's not clear where it is.
There are a lot of famous actors in this. The kids as well, Juliette Lewis is well known for roles in From Dusk Till Dawn or Cape Fear, and Rusty is played by none other than Johnny Galecki, who plays Leonard in Big Bang Theory (or Darlene's boyfriend in Roseanne).
I keep forgetting how long ago this movie came out until I see Juliette Lewis and remember she's a year younger than me. Jeezuz.
Not to mention Kalifornia / Natural Born Killers / Strange Days / Hysterical Blindness!
Juliette Lewis is now playing Johnny Galecki's partner in 'The Connors'. From sister to lover lol
@@adamclifton29 Alabama approved relationship
My family watches this every Christmas Eve. I can recite Clark's rant about his boss verbatim.
My in laws have watched it Xmas eve for years too. My mother in law (she was in her 80s) loved it.
Clark’s rant is everything
Holy shit, where's the Tylenol!?
It's quite funny that Chevy's Scrooge boss is played by Brian Doyle-Murray, who acted with his younger brother Bill in 'Scrooged'. Two Murrays play a Scrooge!
As a kid in the Chicagoland area in the 90’s I always wished we got the snow around Christmas like these movies showed. Sometimes it happened but it usually isn’t until January. This year however…..
way too much babbling on this movie WTF???????????? Is she even listening to the Dialog?????????????????????
The joke about Clark forgetting the saw actually has more to it. There’s been promo shots (I remember seeing some on the back of the first blu-Ray I had of it) of the Griswold family going to a tree lot to buy a tree. But the lot is very lousy so instead of sucking it up and going to a different lot Clark just walks his family into the woods to find a tree. He was fully intending to just buy a tree, that’s why he didn’t bring the saw.
Where did you hear that?
@@OfficalHoDawg It was in some of the original TV ads. The trailers played so much, I always forget that the scene got cut.
@@OfficalHoDawg I figured it out after I got my first copy of the film (after the VHS era). Like I said the manufacturer put images from scenes of the film on the back of the box, but one of those images shows Clark and his family in front of a tree lot. And it looks like they’re talking to the owner/employee who’s sleeping on the job (possibly drunk)
I’ve watched this film a million times and I’ve NEVER seen anything that looks remotely like that image. So it seems likely that it was a scene filmed but ultimate cut.
@@Waldorf-2020 I know that, it's just that what they're saying is not correct. The scene with the family in the lot takes place after Clark finds the tree in the deep woods and asks for a saw.
And practically speaking, in the 'real world', it would have been impossible to dig that tree up the ground was frozen. But we're in the movie world and its funny.
The National Lampoon movies are such a fun time. They hold so much nostalgia. This is probably my favorite out of them
She should've watched Vacation before this one though.
@@jsmithers. Yeah, they make fun made in referencing things that happened in the prior movie which she has no knowledge of.
Hope you and your family have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year! 😊
"I haven't seen Chevy Chase act before as a younger actor."
Two words: Caddyshack, and Fletch.
"FROHE WEIHNACHTEN" from Germany! 🎄❤️
The boss is played by Bill Murray's brother. This is one of my absolute favorite Christmas movies.
Thought so. 😁
Come to think of it, he was also in Ghostbusters II, where he played the shrink talking to Peter Spengler and the gang right after they were committed.
My favorite Christmas movie. The scene where Clark is looking at the film reel of his childhood to Ray Charles singing Spirit of Christmas brings back so much nostalgia.
That was a sweet scene. I want to believe that those videos were of him when he was a child. His emotions seemed real.
That scene hits a lot different as an adult when you've lost people you love.
This was a movie that me and my family would watch every night on Christmas Eve we would always laugh at Aunt Bethany and Chevy’s performances. Thank you for uploading on this on my 20th birthday. Have a Merry Christmas Mary!
Happy birthday.
Don't throw me down Clark....🤣🤣🤣🤣
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Chevy Chase's first name pronounced with a hard CH sound like in Chase, or chips or chat, rather than like the car company?
NEVER tell someone who's pissed off to calm down.
Here's what does: it takes all their anger and frustration and gives it a target: the person who told them to calm down.
A lot of fun. You so need to see the 1st VACATION (that's the best one) - Mary Christmas :D
You really need to see the other Vacation movies to full appreciate what great a character Clark Griswold is.
I've seen Vacation, but are European and Vegas Vegas needed / worth it too?
@@jsmithers. Yeah, they aren’t as good, but are still worth watching. I also recommend the more recent movie which is just called “Vacation” without the National Lampoons name. Lots of people think it’s a reboot, but it’s actually a sequel. It’s about Clark’s son and he is now grown up and has a family of his own.
@@jsmithers. I like European Vacation (sadly the daughter from it died in the mid 90s) and Vegas Vacation is okay.
@@BasketCase-rr7tx And the newer movie made Ed Helms officially the 5th actor to play Rusty.
@@jsmithers. European Vacation is awful, but Vegas Vacation is pretty good.
National Lampoons “Vacation” and “European Vacation” are highly recommended. You will definitely enjoy them.
If you enjoyed this movie you should really check out the original National Lampoon's Vacation and National Lampoon's European Vacation! This was actually the 3rd movie in the series.
True anecdotal story. My mother's name is Bethany. She was at a gathering at a church. They stood up to pray, everyone had their head down. She turned to the flag and put her hand over her heart. My dad absolutely lost it. Couldn't stop laughing. We have watched this as a family every year since it came out. So it made it that much funnier 🤣
I love stories like yours. My dad watched this, and laughed until he cried when cousin Eddie talked about forgetting who he was and pissing himself when Catherine used the microwave.
I know it's difficult to realize because Chevy is a brand mispronounced a particular way for decades, but it's actually pronounced the way "Chevy" sounds, instead of "Shevy," the car brand. Chevy Chase.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year 😄
I usually just watch specific parts of reaction videos, but this move is too good. I had to watch this whole video. Nice job, Mary!
Chevy Chase didn't get "cancelled", but he is legendarily difficult to work with and has a tendency to lash out. A lot of Pierce's behavior on Community was written as an exaggeration of his real-life behavior and Chevy became increasingly aware of that fact.
Exactly. It wasn't really a social campaign against him, it was the fact that he always treated everyone around him terribly...including the bosses.
He is a pain in the butt, and a habitual bridge-burner
Years of alcohol & substance abuse didn't help the matter. He's better now but already burnt all the bridges.
I find it best to avoid all info on actors personal lives for untainted viewing experiences.
@@Johnny_Socko That's BS. He's great to fans and people that work under him. The Reason he was difficult on Community was becuase Dan Harmon was incompetent and had people working until 4 in the morning on Saturday. For young hungry actors in their 20's that wasn't such a big deal. For a movie star pushing 70 it was a tall order.
A really goofy movie is The Three Amigos, with Chevy Chase, Martin Short, and Steve Martin.
This movie is one of my favorites. You don’t need to watch the other movies to get it, although I suggest more people watch them. But it’s hilarious, getting older I feel like it becomes more relatable every time I see it, my parents love this one and we watch every year.
You try to bring too much logic into comedy movies
the fireball that burns the tree gets me everytime. I'm in tears!
Cousin Eddie outside in a robe that is balls high drinking a Schlitz, smoking a stogie at 7 am and Clark's Christmas rant make this movie Iconic
Stogie is slang for cigar. Eddie is Ellen's cousin. Eggnog is quite tasty! It is very dessert-like like a sweetened creamy vanilla ice cream drink, people usually garnish it with a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg. Aunt Bethany is 100% my mother. When she comes into the house and they tell her to go say hello to everybody and she replies with an ecstatic "Hello Everybody!" I die laughing every time. That is just like my mother. She is not all there but we love her nonetheless.
This is one of the most iconic Christmas movies of all time, surprised you've never seen it! There are also three other National Lampoon's Vacation movies starring the Griswolds. They're all worth watching!
The order of the NL movies are:
1)National Lampoon's Vacation
2)National Lampoon's European Vacation (which has Erik Idle from Monty Python in it)
3) National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
4) Vegas Vacation
They also have a recent movie called "Vacation" that starts with Clarke's son, Rusty, and his family.
One of my favourite Christmas films!
The car, Chevy, is pronounced with the soft CH, but the actor, Chevy, I believe is pronounced with a hard CH.
Correct
As some others have pointed out, this is the third _Vacation_ movie. If you watch the two that preceded this one, you'll learn that with Clark Griswold, anything worth doing is worth overdoing. That's why he always gets into these zany situations. However, as you so beautifully noted, he is a family man at heart. He wants to please them more than anything.
It's worth looking up Chevy (pronounced with a hard *ch,* like in the word *check)* Chase's other films, because they're very funny. Most of what he made in the 1970s and 80s is good. The quality of his movies trailed off in the 90s and beyond.
Russ is played by Johnny Galecki, who's most known for his role as Leonard in _The Big Bang Theory._ Audrey is played by Juliette Lewis, who has a bunch of other roles for which she's better known. I recommend _Natural Born Killers_ or _Strange Days_ as a couple of her good dramatic turns. One of the gags for the _Vacation_ series is the kids are played by different actors in each movie, and they trade places as to which child is the elder child. William Hickey (Uncle Lewis) was a great character actor. His stature and nasal voice were his calling cards.
Trivia: The house next door to the Griswolds is the house used in the Lethal Weapon films for Murtaughs house (the exterior)
You should check out the other Vacation movies, there's Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation, and Vegas Vacation
National Lampoon’s Vacation and Europeon Vacation are also worth a watch.
Since you enjoyed this one, you should definitely check out the first of the series, it's absolutely hilarious and, in my opinion, the best of the bunch (two and four were also pretty good too).
Happy Holidays Mary. ✌❤
Yeah I think the 1st is the best but this one has that seasonal magic that keeps it evergreen.
1st movie Eddie is the king slob. He's good on this and a cartoon in Vegas.
Mary, I loved you singing along. You were really in the spirit! I 💚❤ your reactions! You put so much thought and time into your after-movie breakdowns. I always either learn something or gain a new perspective! Keep them coming! p.s. If you get a chance to watch the drama, "Rainman," or "Good Will Hunting," I'd really enjoy that!
This film caught my smile indeed Merry Christmas Mary.

Clark's boss is played by Bill Murray's brother. He also makes a cameo in quite a few of Bill's movies.
Loved your reaction, Mary! FYI, the sing Aunt Bethany sang at the end is the American national anthem.
Your reactions always brighten my day. Merry Christmas, Mary!
The actress the plays Aunt Bethany was the voice of Betty Boop
"I didn't go berserk, I simply solved a problem. We needed a coffin... I... I... I mean... a tree"
Greatest line of the movie 🤣🤣
This is one of my favourite Christmas movies. Great cast. Even young Johnny Galecki (Big bang theory) is great.
That's so strange because it's such a Christmas staple here. It's one of those movies you think EVERYONE has seen.
"Rusty" was originally played by Michael Anthony Hall (The Breakfast Club), In the First National Lampoon Movie, but he outgrew the part.
THIS Rusty is none other than Johnny Galecki, "Leonard" from the Big Bang Theory!
Not every city is New York
Line Faris Buelers day off
This is Chicago. All Jon Hughes’s movies are in the Chicago suburbs where he grew up
This is my family’s favorite Christmas movie!!! We can quote the entire movie by heart, and my dad is the living embodiment of Clark Grizzwald !!!
This isn't New York. This is Chicago. It's John Hughes, after all.
Johnny Galecki who played Rusty is also Leonard from The Big Bang Theory

I highly recommend watching "Violent Night." It's hilarious and a bit scary (to other people.)
I would not recommend Mary to watch the other National Lampoons. I’m sure she’ll thinks the movies have aged not well. A lot of people find it funny, because the situations are so bizarre, but I think Mary will take it too seriously. Oh, if I remember she didn’t like Seinfeld, I wouldn’t promote viewing that reaction.
more Chevy Chase (with Steve Martin) in Three Amigos which is worth checkinog out.
Cousin Eddy was introduced in the first movie of the series called "National Lampoon's Vacation." Cousin Eddy is played by actor Randy Quaid who is the brother of actor Dennis Quaid. Randy Quaid has won the Golden Globe award, and has been nominated for an Academy Award and for several Emmy awards in his career. Randy Quaid is both a serious actor and a comedic actor. His career is quite accomplished. One of his best movies is a movie called "The Last Detail" with Jack Nicholson, and one of his funniest movies is a movie called " Kingpin" starring Woody Harrelson. Thanks for the reaction Mary, and your intelligent point of view.
"They're never gonna get rid of that sap." Well, Clark is the man of the house...
Mary Christmas!!!🎄🎄🎅🏽🎅🏽🎁🎁Yep, it's a thing now! Great reactions to to enjoyable holiday film Christmas Vacation, Mary!!!🎄🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
7:04 - Oh man... I remember those incandescent Christmas lights. They were always breaking, burning out, and used so much electricity. The LED bulbs are sooooo much easier.
I remember one year as a kid, my father took us out to cut down a tree for Christmas. Yeah, it was cold.
When you asked how he remembers what the girl from the store looked like...well, guys have a thing called the Spank Bank. When we meet or see a female we find attractive, we make a deposit in the bank. When the time comes to spend some alone time, we see what kind of "funds" we have and make a withdrawal.
Christmas movie idea:
Santa Claus The Movie (1985)
You need to watch the original National Lampoon's Vacation to understand the Griswolds better and Cousin Eddie. There's 5 total including the 2015 reboot-quel.
Have a... MARY Christmas! 😀
Chevy Chase was also very good friends with the founder of National Lampoon and did a lot of work with him in the 70s. And then John Hughes wrote for it in the 80s.
I remember finding old issues of National Lampoon in my grandparents basement, that presumably belonged to my uncles.
It was like Mad magazine, but with raunchier humor, laid out like a more typical print magazine than Mad was, and much to the delight of my 14-year-old self, had naked ladies in it 😁.
Hes gonna need that 20% bonus just to pay the electric bill from all of those lights have a merry christmas mary
To look into some of Chevy Chase’s best movies, check out:
- Foul Play (1978)
- Neil Simon’s Seems Like Old Times (1980)
- Modern Problems (1981)
- National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)
- Fletch (1985)
- Funny Farm (1988)
- Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992)
If the kid who plays Russ looks familiar; he’s played by Johnny Galecki, best known for playing David on Roseanne and Leonard on The Big Bang Theory.
6:40 You have a good eye. That’s Doris Roberts (Everybody Loves Raymond) as one of the in-laws.
If you want to see other movies with Beverly D’Angelo, check out Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980) with Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. It’s the bio pic on country singer Loretta Lynn, and D’Angelo plays Patsy Cline.
The actor who played Uncle Lewis also played Dr Finklestein in Nightmare before Christmas
i recommend you react to the original :

It's my family's tradition to watch this movie every Christmas
Also the son is played by Johnny Galecki, who would play Leonard in Big Bang Theory
I saw this when it came out on VHS and nothing has made me laugh as hard as SPACEBALLS like this one (not even HOME ALONE). Clark absolutely losing his shit and punching Santa in the face and kicking him into the bushes is without question the funniest thing I've ever seen in any movie and it never gets old.
Watch the first one which is national lampoon’s vacation
If you want another movie with Raymond's mom, check out Grandma's Boy.
It's a fun movie and she was adorable in it.
You should watch Spies Like Us next.....
The daughter is played by Juliette Lewis, an excellent actress in her own right. Cape Fear(the remake), Natural Born Killers, From Dusk Till Dawn, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Kalifornia all excellent movies of hers.
An American song? Thats our national anthem! lol great reaction love your channel! Merry Christmas!
You should also react to GREMLINS. It's a Christmas movie and it's very cute.
I find it funny when people get hurt in comedy movies, but that's fictional, they do it on purpose for laughs. On those compilations they're real people actually getting hurt, that's not funny.
I highly recommend the other 3 National Lampoon Vacation movies - National Lampoon's Vacation, European Vacation and Vegas Vacation. They are summer movies, more or less.
Also worth seeking out are National Lampoon's Animal House (college antics in the 50's) and Loaded Weapon 1 (a parody of Lethal Weapon for once you have seen Lethal Weapon 3)
Merry Christmas, Mary. Have a wonderful one!
Chevy was a master of pratfalls, he was on Saturday night live and would do them live in front of and occasionally on the audience.
Why do so many people take bonus for granted?!
It’s a BONUS!
Get a dictionary, people!
@MaryCherry_1... I hope this is real!
If you like this, you'll like the original Vacation movie, follows a lot of the same beats. Euro Vacation is also fun.
FYI the boss is Bill Murray's brother, he also appears in one of the Ghostbusters movies and a lot of other movies that feature Bill.
This is one of my favoueite Xmas films.
This is actually the third one with Vacation and then European Vacation being the first 2.
Chevy Chase had a ton of 80s comedies. I recommend Modern Problems.
This was the first Vacation movie on NBC back in the early 90's.
All Clark wants is a normal family Christmas but not everything goes according to plan.
Great reaction! Thank you.
You might also recognize Russ from Big Bang Theory or Roseanne.
Must watch Vacation. Some of this will make more sense.
This is so funny great reaction Merry Christmas Mary🎅🎁🎄🤶❤
Thank you! You too!
Love you, Mary! Merry Christmas!❤
Man I love seeing Lola the cat! She's so adorable 🤗 also have I been pronouncing Chevy Chase wrong
There are a few other vacations, national lampoon's, European vacation, Vegas vacation followed this one. Then there was simply "vacation" focusing on Rusty's family about 5 years ago. There was also a lesser known Christmas vacation 2 about cousin Eddie's family (nowhere near as good as this one)
Randy Quaid's character is Clark's cousin Eddie, whom was first introduced, along with his family, in the original National Lampoon's Vacation from 1983. You have to watch the first movie to understand who he is because people who watch Christmas Vacation first tend to get confused by his arrival.
Eddie is married to Beverly D'Angelo characters cousin. That's how distant they are.
@@wyrmshadow4374 Very distant. 😂
