Car thieves in Ontario could see their licenses suspended up to a “lifetime”

- Ontario’s Ford government says it plans to put forward legislation later this week that would allow it to suspend drivers’ licenses for people found guilty of auto theft.
The province’s Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said the plan would “send a message” to auto thieves.
The legislation will propose an escalating scale of license bans, up to a potential "lifetime ban" for those convicted three times, according to the province.

What this is setting up for is being able to add on additional charges.
Because driving without your license is a charge and doing it while in a possession of a stolen vehicle also adds to it

Absolutely bang on. “If the crime involves violence”. So, steal 100 vehicles from driveways or parking lots and you’re golden. Theft WITH VIOLENCE = ROBBERY, not simple car theft. You get convicted of robbery and losing your license is the least of your worries (or, it SHOULD be, but hey this is Canada and since when do criminals worry about justice?)

do you give out licenses to steal cars in ontario? no? do you think that only people with drivers licenses are car thieves? of course not.
this is an idea so dumb it sounds like texas. people with stable lives and something to lose don't steal cars. to get a stable life and important stuff you don't want to lose, you need an income. which comes from a job. which you need a license to drive to and from.
in the us state i used to live in they suspended the licenses of parents who failed to pay child support- virtually ensuring that they could not find and retain a job, so and directly landing them in prison.
Taking someone's License away doesn't stop the one's with no license from stealing cars.
Driving without a license is only a few fines.
But jail time is time without this person committing crimes. Bail puts people at risk of the offender doing it again.

Harcher penalties don't prevent crimes, because their crimes of desperation. The alternative to not stealing a car for some people is not living the life they want - either way. These sorts of penalties disproportionately affect the most vulnerable people
