Rudolf Kempe began his musical studies at the age of thirteen at the Orchesterschule of the Staatskapelle in Dresden, where his first instruments were the piano and violin. He later turned to the oboe. After only four years of study, he found himself playing the oboe with the Dortmund Orchestra for four months, and soon after, he was appointed principal oboist of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig at the age of eighteen. He performed both in concerts and in the opera pit in Leipzig under the direction of conductors such as Strauss, Furtwängler, Beecham, Walter, and Klemperer.
Although the orchestra did not record albums during Kempe’s tenure, a few radio tapes have survived, allowing us to hear Bach cantatas conducted by Karl Straube. Kempe's first conducting experience was with a local amateur orchestra. Reports of his skill quickly reached the Opera House, and he was soon invited to make his professional debut with Lortzing’s opera "Der Wildschütz."
Kempe remained in Leipzig during the war years, although his career was hindered by military service, which he undertook reluctantly. In the immediate post-war period, he worked in the opera houses of Chemnitz, Weimar, and Dresden, in a culturally isolated East Germany, building a vast operatic and symphonic repertoire under often less than ideal conditions.
Orchestra musicians remember Kempe as a musician of absolute professionalism. He had an intimate knowledge of all the scores he conducted, ensuring preparation and execution to the highest standards. He never took conducting courses, but while he was an orchestral musician, he observed the methods of great conductors and developed a technique known for its clarity and reliability. He was an objective interpreter who avoided any demonstrative behavior both on and off the podium. His interpretations were renowned for their luminous expressiveness and exceptional orchestral texture.
