Currently every football fan in Germany except BM celebrates that BM is not champions again. But I would say everyone also feels a bit sad for Kane who was their only bright spot and his greatest season was not crowned. I also like Thomas Müller and he is "excused" for being Bayern Munich because he was made for his club.
Tbh if the stuff that happened to Leverkusen in between 1997 and 2002 happened in the prem everyone would be saying its the most exciting league, the bundesliga was the best league in the late 90s early 2000s
Serie A was stronger, now its a mess.
Don't forget this was (even despite their UEFA cup win in '88) by far the best season Bayer Leverkusen ever had... until now.
One thing that gets to me is the disrespect for Ballack. Dude was tall/strong, had great technique, could pass/shoot with both feet like they were his natural ones (which is sth thats going missing in todays game), had under appreciated ball control/skills/passing ability, sure he was no mbappe but he had some deceptive pace as well, and man those headers?!?! Michael Ballack was an amazing all around talent.
Not a jack of all trades cuz he was amazing in multiple aspects of the game, not to mention his fight/will to win (despite his many failures to do so which honestly were not his fault).

Bayer Leverkusen was the first team to reach the final of the Champions League without ever having won a national championship.
In addition, five members of the Bayer Leverkusen team were also members of the Germany national team which lost the final of the World Cup of 2002.
2001-02 season, Bayer Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga and lost in the 2002 DFB-Pokal Final.

As, a german i can say. Michael Ballacks career and story is just crazy. Carried Germany for a decade, carried Leverkusen and partly Bayern & Chelsea to great success many times. Yet he was, kinda rightfully proven Germanys performances at WC 2010 & 2014, cast aside. Great player of his time but he was eaten by modern football since people like Lahm, Neuer Schweinsteiger and Kroos took over

Leverkusen unlike in 2002 are now one win away from breaking the curse. Until now Bayer Leverkusen has never won the Bundesliga title in their history and now Xabi Alonso are one win away to achieve history. Alonso took over a side that was fighting relegation last season and since then they could become the first team ever to win the treble without a single loss. Incredible.

Fun fact: The teams that beat Leverkusen in 2002 in each trophy were not that "winners" either.
Bundesliga champion Dortmund lost the UEFA Cup final that year against Feyenoord.
DFB Pokal champion Schalke failed to qualify for the Champions League, a year after narrowly losing the league title.
And Champions League champion Real Madrid (which was celebrating its centenary) lost Copa del Rey final in Santiago Bernabeu and dropped from league leadership in 33th matchweek (finished 3rd).

I was lucky enough to follow the season of this team on champions league back on the day, the team was so good, and was the base of the German national team that they also lost on the final.
The champions league final was an amazing match with one iconic Zidane goal. And the debut of maybe the best spain goalkeeper on history. Because of the injury of Cesar. Casillas was a wall in that match

Most youngsters are gloryhunters, but I was almost on the other opposite. This season was my 2nd football season overall. I was little child and didn't understood a lot. But when I saw how Leverkusen suffered in the end, they became my favourite team and also I hated Real and BVB a lot back then(because I blamed them for 'stealing' what was Leverkusen's. After a while I stopped hating on BVB because I saw they are not so great and just were lucky that season, but for Real(and some other similar teams) till this day I hate them for so many different reasons. They are just full of them. But that year was so bad for Leverkusen that made me suffer with them in the end like they are my home town team.

I never seen this as a failure. But i remember the importance of their Libero Jens Nowotny....playing phenomenal.... holding the defense together. Then he had a incredibly bad injury....and it all went downhill.

I have seen numerous air crashes and pilots almost saving and sometimes saving unsaveable situation.. but I have never seen a pilot fuck up a savable situation this bad ... Even after all those breaches if he didn't lay the gear down so quick in the last approach maybe they could have somehow make it to the runway.. even people with no flight experience will have the sense to not add extra drag when already stalling.. ( yes it was in stress ) but come on , it was so savable untill the last ...

That combination confused many people who first put him on a pedestal because of his talent (he was the nations sole world class player of his entire generation) but then ditched him as a loser because he is "just an Ossi". Through all of this, Ballack was the most unlucky. He got through this treble of horrors not once, but TWICE. And when he got the chance to redeem himself, all he got, was a career ending injury a week before the 2010 World Cup. He deserves a seperate video tbh
