One thing that gets to me is the disrespect for Ballack. Dude was tall/strong, had great technique, could pass/shoot with both feet like they were his natural ones (which is sth thats going missing in todays game), had under appreciated ball control/skills/passing ability, sure he was no mbappe but he had some deceptive pace as well, and man those headers?!?! Michael Ballack was an amazing all around talent. Not a jack of all trades cuz he was amazing in multiple aspects of the game, not to mention his fight/will to win (despite his many failures to do so which honestly were not his fault).
I grew up watching Soccer in Germany only with the highlights of the Bundesliga Games as Ballack was playing for Bayern (between 04/06) and i swear he made a Header in every Game😂
Currently every football fan in Germany except BM celebrates that BM is not champions again. But I would say everyone also feels a bit sad for Kane who was their only bright spot and his greatest season was not crowned. I also like Thomas Müller and he is "excused" for being Bayern Munich because he was made for his club.
Tbh if the stuff that happened to Leverkusen in between 1997 and 2002 happened in the prem everyone would be saying its the most exciting league, the bundesliga was the best league in the late 90s early 2000s
I liked this Leverkusen team had outstanding players from Lucio, Pogatez, Placente, Ze Roberto, Remelow, Basturk, and Neuville, I was heartbroken when they fail to win anything
Michael Ballack suffered the most. He carried Bayer Leverkusen to every single trophy and germany to the 2002 World Cup final and loses it all. Then he loses the ballon dor to Ronaldo, who did NOT deserve it. Ballack deserved it
He missed that 2002 world cup final cause of suspension as well. And in 2008 he finished 2nd in the PL, lost league cup final and UCL final with Chelsea, and lost Euros final to Spain
Bayer Leverkusen was the first team to reach the final of the Champions League without ever having won a national championship. In addition, five members of the Bayer Leverkusen team were also members of the Germany national team which lost the final of the World Cup of 2002. 2001-02 season, Bayer Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga and lost in the 2002 DFB-Pokal Final. UEFA Champions League final 2-1 to Real Madrid, which also led to some of the English-language media dubbing them "Neverkusen".
Imagine NEVER winning the title but when you do you go the ENTIRE season unbeaten.. THAT'S how you banish a curse 😅.. I bet Harry Kane feels sick to his stomach 🤢

It sucks that it has to be against Werder Bremen of all teams, since we really need the points in the relegation battle... but if it comes to that, so be it. At least the champion won't be Bayern this year.
Leverkusen unlike in 2002 are now one win away from breaking the curse. Until now Bayer Leverkusen has never won the Bundesliga title in their history and now Xabi Alonso are one win away to achieve history. Alonso took over a side that was fighting relegation last season and since then they could become the first team ever to win the treble without a single loss. Incredible.
Not quite the treble with the Europa league instead of the champions league but still if they win all three undefeated that's gotta be up there with one of the best seasons

As, a german i can say. Michael Ballacks career and story is just crazy. Carried Germany for a decade, carried Leverkusen and partly Bayern & Chelsea to great success many times. Yet he was, kinda rightfully proven Germanys performances at WC 2010 & 2014, cast aside. Great player of his time but he was eaten by modern football since people like Lahm, Neuer Schweinsteiger and Kroos took over
That team was soo good back then! Just take a look at the players they had. It was such a shame they didnt win a single trophy, maybe one of the best teams to never win anything.
Botafago last season was a bigger choke. Leading with 13 points half season and finishing outside the important top 4, which qualifies you for South American Champions League.
OMG im getting shivers of how good football was back then! Seeing all these legends and the matches they played! This will never, never, never be the same! :/
Fun fact: The teams that beat Leverkusen in 2002 in each trophy were not that "winners" either. Bundesliga champion Dortmund lost the UEFA Cup final that year against Feyenoord. DFB Pokal champion Schalke failed to qualify for the Champions League, a year after narrowly losing the league title. And Champions League champion Real Madrid (which was celebrating its centenary) lost Copa del Rey final in Santiago Bernabeu and dropped from league leadership in 33th matchweek (finished 3rd).
That Bayer Leverkusen with Ballack, Ramelow, Schneider, Ze Roberto, Lucio and Neuville was soooo fun to watch... one of my favourites ever the team was totally dismantled after the champions league final... a pity.
I was lucky enough to follow the season of this team on champions league back on the day, the team was so good, and was the base of the German national team that they also lost on the final. The champions league final was an amazing match with one iconic Zidane goal. And the debut of maybe the best spain goalkeeper on history. Because of the injury of Cesar. Casillas was a wall in that match
Leverkusen made me know who is ballack and his nickname (Mr. Runner-Up). At first, i didnt understand it. But after i see his carrer, i have sympathy for ballack. The only man who get 4 runner-up in the same season twice (2002 & 2008).
As a Spurs fan I felt I could fall back on calling Leverkusen bigger bottlers than us, but I will probably not be able to do that anymore because one of our own legends joined a team in the same league as them bringing an even bigger curse 😭
I never seen this as a failure. But i remember the importance of their Libero Jens Nowotny....playing phenomenal.... holding the defense together. Then he had a incredibly bad injury....and it all went downhill. Leverkusen was playing above normal level...in the end it was the lack of experience and leadership. But damn....what a year.
