Splunk. I am referring to a standard end mill which usually do not have center cutting capabilities. Thus making plunge cuts with those non center cutting will cause wobble. However center cutting end mill will plunge. I used a mill drill cutter but really did not like the way it did a plunge cut either.
There are many ways to mill slots in plate, you gotter done! Thanks for the plug and watching my videos. I'm glad to see a welder / fabricator, which I'm presuming, expanding interest into machining. Becoming diversified with most relating trades to a job shop, will keep you in work during a slow or depression time period, that is what I owe much of my success in keeping Turn Wright Machine Works going, since 1994. ;{)-----
I wish I had a milling machine to do this kind of work. You mentioned the bit wobbles a little, and then the wobble disappears. How does it disappear? Is it making contact with the edge of the metal and that contact smooths out the wobble?
how much would it cost to get a slot like that?i need 2 slots on a go kart rim bracket i took off the ones from a wheel chair.but my go kart axle its flat to round.so my tire wheel rim needs to be sloted.
Hi, really enjoyed the video, well explained and illustrated. This is a newbie question, is a end mill and slot mill the same tool. I thought that the end mill was only to dress the end of work but then when I thought about it cutting a slot is very similiar except you are cutting material on more faces. I guess I thought that a slot mill was a bit like a hybrid drill/end mill in that you could plunge the drill through the plate and then move the table to cut the slot. The way you did this would be how I would do it. NSW, Australia
I am new to milling machines, but as far as I know, an S.D is commonly called S.E.M slotting end mill. A S.D will do what an E.M does, but an E.M will not plunge straight down like you can with a SEM (slotting end mill / slot drill). Although, as I understand it, you can cut downwards into a slot with a regular E.M. as long as you ramp at an angle into the slot.
Tip: Whenever you setup your datums with the edge finder , don't have the quill extended. Loses a couple of thou hear and there
