Overall California tourism bounces back but Bay Area lags

Be honest with yourself and just look around this city. Boarded up, graffitied shops, poop on the streets, drug people passed out on the streets, crime so bad that grocery, drug and retail stores have given up. Everything is still incredibly expressive. No need to scratch your head and pretend you don’t get it. The city has been allowed to descend for too long, too deep and too wide into a state of “dysfunctional chaos.” It has pretty views and a pretty Golden Gate Bridge but Detroit it knocking at the front door. I completely understand not wanting to believe it but that is not going to solve problems and revive this beleaguered city.

They are fooling us with these numbers. Prices have gone up so much, fewer tourists are spending the same amount as 2019.
I avoid visiting SF because I don't want my car broken into.
My friend from back east came to SF to visit his daughter in the Richmond district about 2 weeks ago. After dinner, they found her car had been broken into as well as her catalytic converter was stolen. My friend spent the weekend trying to get his daughter's car fixed but learned that catalytic converters are on a 6 mos wait time. Not exactly a good look for tourism in SF.
Funny thing is the smog emission test is just a Ca thing (maybe other states have smog test). If law makers and DMV are aware of cat converters being stolen, can't they offer an exception to have ppl like your daughter drive their car before they have to renew their registration?
Government expects you to take care of your affairs when they are making these problems for you.

I refuse to visit the Bay Area, my last time down there was not good. Oakland in particular is far too dangerous to visit

Honestly for tourists SoCal has a lot more variety to offer than the Bay Area and costs less, it's no big mystery.
If you are considering Disneland then yes, otherwise its a wash.
I feel like north has more and not just being bias living in the bay area. Northern CA has lots of variation of scenery. The south has the theme parks and Hollywood.
Definately no, as somone who has lived in SoCal before the Bay area, I can tell you that is not true. There are more things to do things here! Unless you vount Universal or Disneyland, I think LA and SoCal is overrated.

I agree with you. LA has world class museums that are very inexpensive if not free and you can still find parking for these museums for less than $10. Museums in SF are very expensive and parking is like three times the cost of the museum. Not all of us can always ride public transit. I find plenty of fun things to do in LA when i visit and I feel very safe in the locations I visit. i especially like the observatory in Griffith Park and the zoo and it's practically free. I ride the train from Burbank to downtown LA and visit breweries and China town and it's fun. Pasadena is a lot of fun, too.
Tourism, yes. Local no. I work in Union Square, and theres rarely locals. No one is here anymore.

I live in the bay area but I wouldn't go to SF Downtown due to excessive crime and homeless humans.

That's not the entire picture. We also are missing all the local tourist CA state tourists and then the out of the state tourist. The mid 2000s until 2016 was the golden age of tourism in SF. people locally would go to SF as much as they could on the weekends. SF used to be a vibe man especially weekends. Now people avoid SF at all costs and dont want to go or can't afford to spend gas bridge parking, food broken glass regular high prices.
Just like crime is down. Nobody believes you.

Having recently from vacationing in Japan and speaking with tourists there, another reason why the number of Chinese tourists is down is because the US Dollar is expensive for them and many others in Asia. In contrast, the Japanese Yen is at its lowest in decades which is proving incredibly attractive to many tourists.

I'm from Brazil and we visited SF three weeks ago and it was tense from beginning to end, I stayed in a hotel close to Peer 39, the place is no longer safe, we were chased at 9 AM by a homeless man, already in union square I was almost robbed and returning from Castro we were scared to death with 2 homeless people freaking out inside the bus. I had the worst tourism experience of my life, I couldn't wait to leave SF, God bless this city!

Tourists visit LA because it is a lot better place for tourists than sf. Not only does it have better weather, and better beaches it has millions of tourist attractions that sf doesn’t have! So for this news organization to blame the numbers on marketing is ridiculous!
