My thoughts about the BMPCC 4k after one year of extensive usage!
A very non-technical review about the camera that impacted my filmmaking like no other before.
Check out my latest short film "Breaking Social Distancing" : • Covid 19 Film "BREAKIN...
Senpai please pin me
Very true! This is what the film-philosophy is. Make every frame for the story. That's why I like this channel very much.
Filmmakers are not the guys who are addicted to the meaningless “B-roll" and transitions.
The emotion, the atmosphere, the story, and the performance are real kings in a movie. In the film industry, if a filmmaker abuses the shallow of the field, it feels cheap, for they don't know how to set the story stage or don't have the budget for lighting.
Liam Ren well said my friend! Agree all the way
I would say for amateurs like myself I'm still in the “B-roll" and transitions stage. I do really want to be doing stuff with much more narrative but I guess I'm just having difficulty starting. Films are definitely my endgame and watching that Jo and Laurie scene in the field from Little Woman definitely made me realize that!
@@AxiA Thank you, my friend. I like your work very much. You encourage us a lot.
Blackmagic should add this video among those which serve as a promotion for their cameras. Very well thought but simple at the same time. Plus, your experience is one many of us can relate: I, for one, became a better DoP for the exact reasons you mentioned in the video. The BMPCC 4K (same thing can be said for others cameras in its league, I guess) forces you to be aware about stuff one can easily forget unless is a professional. In that sense, it makes you a professional, because otherwise it wouldn't be impossible to cope with this little beast, despite its flaws. So, the BMPCC 4K it's a school, like an academy, where you have to be your own teacher. Very spot on, kudos to you AxiA.
In other words. It’s time to grow up! We as Dslr filmmakers have been spoiled rotten with autofocus, electric gimbals & a ton of other things & the BMPCC 4K & 6K are here to snap us back into reality & prepare us for the real world of cinema which means actually having to frame our shots & be creative instead of temporarily satisfying the audience with useless Ronin movements... it’s time we get back to cranes, tripods, focus pulling & creativity! Great video bro
Just bought my Bmpcc6k last week. Out of the box began shooting and got discouraged. But every thing you said is true. It’s frustrating at the beginning but it sure makes you better at filmmaking
The Bmpcc4k and your short films changed me! Thanks!
Delachi One you’re too kind sir ! Thank you
Love your videos. I feel like your telling my story. I bought the red komodo from the fx3 and felt so bad because I was so used to autofocus and ibs. When i got the komodo and had to learn manual focus and how to slow down and learn handheld I thought it was over. I spent so much money into rigging it out and lenses that I couldn’t afford buying a big gimbal let alone have a crew pulling focus for me, but im learning to work on myself innorder to operate it like a pro.
Absolutely true.
There is an entire industry of camera manufacturers that is taking advantage of shooters who are afraid to put their hands on the lens. And the industry has moved into that space to sell compensating features. It is holding filmmakers back. Keeping them undeveloped as story tellers.
Here’s a simple truth. If you hold your lens your camera is less shaky AND you can focus. Amazing I know. Pop a variable ND on the front and hey presto, exposure control too.
Once you start driving your camera everything becomes more deliberate and you start to make better decisions.
Autofocus and gimbal moves are your camera taking you for a ride. Sure you’ve chosen the ride but you are a passenger.
You want Hollywood, you are going to have to take part in making a lot more decisions. You need to learn to drive.
@@inSurfersParadise yes sir
@@AxiA Love your work. As a designer/studio photographer I really misunderstood the breadth of new skills required to make footage worth showing. So I trusted the gear to do it for me. That hybrid camera held me back for 2 years. I traded it for a BM 6K and what an expansive experience it has been. What I did not comprehend is how a filmmaker must anticipate the viewers eye - being there the moment before the viewer so the footage feels like reality. And human curiosity - how to build a scene the way our brain comprehends.
Understanding just these two fundamentals makes every shot more compelling.
This is exactly what I learned too. I used to rely of the camera to make my shot. The BMPCC 4K taught me composition. It made me learn how to have the camera work for me instead of me working for the camera. Great video. Big like and subscribe from me. Thanks man!!
I love how it’s not only a review about the camera itself but your profession as a film maker !! By the way your last creations are amazing !
Thank you so so much !!
This is honestly the best video I've seen regarding the bmpcc4k. I appreciate your input! Im looking forward to those growing pains
Very honest and insightful video.
You really are an inspiration, man.
Simple Sandals Media thank you so much! Very happy you liked it !
Subscribed. Just got the BMPCC 4K and waiting for it in the mail. I have a lot to learn but I'm dedicated to learning everything on this camera.
Right thoughts and conclusions. And thanks for your shorts. It's inspiring
Вячеслав Бабийчук thank you so much for leaving a nice feedback ! More shorts are coming soon
Thanks for making this video. It helps to boost our confidence.
I'm coming into my second year with my BMPCC4K and still finding my feet on how I want to go about what I'm aiming to do (documentary) and how to to do it well. I always look forward to your videos as they, as I mentioned once before, are a breath of fresh air from the usual stuff and shows rare creativity. Subconsciously it sinks in and appears from time to time. And please don't do any horror - we have enough of that in the world already.
Australian Image thank you man! Glad you like the content! And don’t worry i don’t like horror movies myself and I don’t see myself making a horror short anytime soon lol
I’m getting the Packet 4K and I will be shooting Horror & mostly Sci fi, There is a lot of crappie horror out there, it’s actually not enough good horror content.
You are my Idol for color grading. Just bought Bmpcc6K last week. Try to figure out color process like what you did :)
Oh wow, well thank you so much! I’m sure you’ll love that BMPCC 6k! It’s a beast
Great story - thanks for telling it...
Great vid. What lenses do you like to use in your short films for your bmpcc 4k?
Great breakdown and tips
We need a color grading video from you! Great work!
Will do that at some point!
Best advice I’ve had in 2020
Love to hear that
I can feel you sir. Same story here. Started with a6000 59 a7 iii to black magic 6k 🔥
Love this honest review!
you should make a video about your rig. looking to get the camera and would love to see the different parts you used to make your rig
Dominick Puleri thank you! Yeah I’ll consider doing that
Please make more videos like this
Lucid Ter will do !
Loved this. Your work has gotten INSANE since you got this rig. Stoked to watch it all unfold!
Thank you brother, you are literally the most impressive/talented filmmaker director I’ve ever known , so reading this makes me super happy 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You’re really my inspiration
True.
Thank you so much 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
this was really helpful. Thank you so much!!!
Thanks for the sharing.... Really need your opinions
Willdan Mus 🙏🏻🙏🏻 thanks !!
Dude. You 're another Greek fellow creator? Im currently on the a6500 and thinking of making the leap to the a7 iii or the BMPCC 4K as well. Your other video with the BMPCC was one of my inspirations to think about the Black Magic.
Great points !
When you said that you went back to the Sony and your images got better......I felt that!! Felt the same way when I went back to my a6300. My friends said "That BlackMagic puts in work". When I told them it was the a6300 they lost it! Glad someone said this!
Yes sir!! Exactly!
I love watching your vids. Your skills with the 4k inspire me so much!
TimewarpedCo glad to hear that!
Amazing work man! You are going to give us some from your lighting sets & CC, it will be fantastic...
Barak Ishay i posted last week a little tutorial where I explain a little bit my process !
THANKS!
If you sold LUTs, I would totally buy them.
Such an astute observation man . It's not the tool that makes you a great filmmaker or crazy sensationalised money shots with "gimbals" its about how you use the tool and vision . I applaud the back to basics approach. Keep on making good content my friend. 😃🤙
Man this is my story exactly. I too came from the A7III and bought the BMPCC4k and immediately I was like my footage doesn't look as good as it did lol. It is really a shock to the system when you get a camera coming from a traditional dslr/dslm that does most of the heavy lifting for you. However, I aborted the growth process early because I had a malfunction with my bmpcc4k and returned it and took the easy route and kept shooting with the A7III lol. But I'm ready to make that journey again whether that be with a Bp6k or Zcam.
And I think it is important that you point out that there is more to shooting than gimbals. Even with my A7III, I have found that I do a lot more handheld and manual focus and I really prefer the look of a well developed well thought out shot that is handheld than a whole bunch of big sweeping movements with a gimbal. I found that when shooting with a gimbal I don't think about my shots and I don't think about story and framing as much because it is so easy to lean on the crutch of big sweeping "cinematic" movements that are easy to make with a gimbal. But the thing we forget is that nothing is cinematic unless it is first well thought out and if it doesn't lend to the story then it won't mean anything anyway. Sub'd!
same feelings
eszesfilm 💪🏻 glad to hear that
Thinking about getting the BM 4K. This gives me hope lol
"This camera changed me" ...me too :D
Tonda Damborsky love to hear that :D
Great Video! Totally get your perspective on the cam :) Such an inspiration!
Toon Labs glad you liked the video
More of these videos pls
Will do more!
Fantastic video
Very inspiring, thank you
You’re welcome 😁🤞🏻
Thanks , keep doing videos like this!!!!
Thanks again brother!
well said sir :) this is gonna be a great video for future people who wanna purchase this amazing camera ;)
just dushawn glad to hear you liked the video 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
great video) thanks for sharing your experience) love your work, man!
Axia your channel is dope, the quality of your upload is always excellent. I hope you can do like a horror short film in the future cheers 🙏
Tatsūkiji I’m not a big horror movie guy ..! I’d love to do something dramatic or a thriller. The problem with those genres are that they are hard to make in a 2/3 minutes format
Bravo :) love your work and cant agree with you anymore :D cheers! heres to many more films and years of getting better :)
this would probably be my journey if i could afford this camera. I want one of these so badly
Mobile Filmmaking you might find some good used deals!
True wards 🙏
Hey thanks for this insight. This is exactly how I feel about this camera right now. You should do a vid on your rig for the pocket 4k
CraftyRice I Will think about that!
Hello there,I have the blackmagic production 4K and it’s much difficult to handle and the pocket but with practice and time we start to make better shots even without the gambling lol
Good job.
猛倫影像 thank you
Loved the video
SaberGaming glad to hear this !!
Really impressive footage brah! I remember when I bought the P4k, and I had to relearn everything I thought I knew about working with cameras, even though my previous shooting camera was a Canon 5D MkIII. I can't wait to see more content. What lenses do you use?
Kerey Viswanathan mostly sigma 18-35 and also Tamron 17-50
great video
Good to see you in front of the lens!! That’s also a good fit for you.
As many, many others I hope to get a view intro your grading process. I pay my rent as a colorist and even I am humbled by what you,ve achieved with this camera. So far you are the top-ranking imo. Keep up the good work and everything else!
Oh wow, that’s an honor! I don’t think I have any secret as far as what I do for coloring. But I will do a tutorial at some point !
Can u please please do a colour grade tutorial ???i have bmpcc4k and I am struggling
Karma Yeshi Namdak will do one at some point !
This is great. I really hope for more success for you in the film industry and maybe a little for me as well!
Rivera Films yes please I need that 😅
@@AxiA what do you do as like your day job? Do you work on film sets?
Rivera Films no, I do a lot of food photography and videos for small businesses stuff like that. Classic small creator, but still I feel lucky that I can make that a full time job. I also do some acting here and there, working as background for movies can actually be the only way to get into a film set and spy a little bit!
@@AxiA It would definitely be awesome to see more and varied content from yourself. I guess I have loads to ask but that would be content better for a Q&A down the line. I guess also the only thing about UA-cam from what I've heard from the likes of FreddieW is that UA-cam doesn't really help you get into Hollywood which I'm assuming is your end goal.
Man!! Same sentiments when I moved to bmpcc4k from Sony!!
so true man!!!
Love to hear someone else felt that way!
Great video! Is there any chance you could create a color grading tutorial for us? Your footage is fantastic!
Adam Smith once this channels grows a little bit I will do one for sure
Very well done ty for sharing. I came from original pocket system went to the Sony a7ii,every time I used it for video hated it missed my pocket. Now I am well established fashion photographer and I was wondering if I could or should add the bmpcc to use the many met lenses And focal reducers I own plus two very good m43 power zooms I own to be utilized with the rotolight leds I use for lighting scenes and your video convinced me I should get bmpcc 4K.
This camera took you from a videographer into a filmmaker.
Your bmpcc footage is awesome! Those colors are just great! I'm a total beginner and i'm looking to buy my first mirrorless camera, coming from a sony slt a58 dslr...
I was thinking of the sony a6400 without the ibis or the a6500 with the ibis, or maybe a camera with 4K 60 fps. Do you have any other suggestions about what camera to pick as a beginner? I do like editing in resolve but I think the bmpcc is a little bit to advanced for me at the moment... My hardware is the 16 inch mb pro i7 32 gb RAM and 8gb vram GPU, so I think it would be able to handle 4k 60 fps, especially in final cut.
Hope you can find some time to answer. Thanks in advance!
Iason Visser i think for starting out those camera you picked are good! I think the Sony a6400 could be good, if you pair it with a stabilized lens like the 35mm OSS from Sony. The Black Magic requires more work and might be less fun for a beginner I agree. In the beginning is all about having fun to fuel your enthusiasm! Also the a6500 is good, maybe you can find it used for a good price.
AxiA thanks for your quick response! My only concern with the sony is the rolling shutter everybody seems to be complaining about... I’m planning do most of my shooting on a gimbal, do you think the ibis of the a6500 weighs up against the improved auto focus, better color science, less overheating, and no record limit of the a6400? Because at the moment the a6400 and the a6500 are more or less similar priced at the moment.
Hehe :) josh of make art now always have the coolest shit and make it look easy 😆
Yes I agree!!
I love your videos, I subscribed! Question: I've had the BMPCC 4K since it came out and I'm stuck trying to get clean, beautiful and cinematic footage out of this camera. Just like you did at the beginning, I've filmed a lot but at the end of the day the footage never turns out cinematic. What was the turning point for you to get that look? What's your advice to achieve this? I've tried all sorts of things, bought many lenses and gear, but I can't never get that clean beautiful look that I'm trying to achieve.
Thank you in advance!
Great..!!
This was pretty dope question can you do a tutorial on your color grading process
David Simon will definitely do that at some point
You' re the best
Senpai
Thanks for the video,
I buy bpmcc but still cant find the color that i want... then i sell it.
I know the problem is tho volor grading.. can u teach me the simples color grading to pull of the color like your videos?
Thanks before
I will do some videos soon!
Are you in my head? :D you just told everything whats in my mind.
Thank you! Which lenses do you use with bmpcc 4k?
Awesome channel and videos . Are you using gen 4 or 5 ?
I'm still on Gen 4, waiting the for the Gen 5 update coming to BMPCC4k
@@AxiA thanks for responding . I know I’m premiere there’s an option to change from gen 4 to gen 5 I’m new to the BMPCC4k so I’m trying to see which works best
Hey love your content i'm thinking about making this purchase. I watched The Colors Of Colorado and had some question about the lens you were using and whether it had OIS built in and also if you could please make a tutorial on your handheld movement without camera shake, we would all really appreciate it.
And did you use a gimbal for any of the shots?
Are you using a speed booster at all or all 4/3 lenses?
Ah man, I'm stuck in the cycle again haha. Would you recommend going with the bmpcc4k and rigging it up, or going with the GH5s? I have mostly just used my phone for video, but the battery life is horrible. Still have to practice my framing and composition though.
Wish I were in the LA Area, I'd pay $$$ to have you intern me for like 2-3 of your shoots lol.
Right
Chris Wynn let me know you are in the area ;)
wow 4:21
how did you light this shot?
Mullins Media yes I did !
I agree with you totally. Can I DM you or shoot you an email? If you have Instagram I'm @medgery
Nzo CEO my email is axia.official@gmail.com
Nothing else? You clearly also need a very cinematic girlfriend.
Kristen Wiig looks terrible these days...
yes it s a very good camera for film maker ,I get the 6k I feel good and study more about davinci
You'll love it
