I focus big time on finding ways to simplify my home cleaning life. For instance, we just got my husband a C&C Shelving unit for his clothes, because I was getting overwhelmed by the fact that folding clothes takes forever but if I don't do it, it all piles and we are digging in hampers and piles on tables to get what we need. I am no long going to fold most of our clothes. His can go straight into the c&c drawers mostly unfolded and it freed space in the regular dressers for me to lay my shirts length wise and I am not folding any undies, socks or pretty much anything that won't wrinkle. We live in a different world now. Wives like us don't have hours to be folding clothes and dusting every square inch of our houses.
I am slowly getting rid of all the old fashioned blinds in favor of easily removable and washable curtains because blinds are disgusting too and a pain to clean.
I am blessed that I get to rip up the carpet in my living room soon because I realized the hard wood extends under it. So, I am excited for that!
I used to hand wash all my dishes but finally realized I am being stupid and started using my dishwasher for more than a drying rack and I am planning to slowly replace things that aren't dishwasher safe with versions that are. And I try my best to avoid any containers that I have to use a bottle brush for because I used to just let them pile and pile next to the sink.
My point is, if you are struggling to keep up, you've gotta look at you processes and find ways to save time and simplify.

I’ve been cleaning carpets for 13 years. I appreciate what I do because of what Melissa says. Carpets are gross. Rainbow Vacuums are my preferred vacuum because the dust/dirt is caught or filtered through water. Not in a bag or filter. A lot of vacuums will resend the dirt and dust back out of the vacuum once it’s turned back on. Her comment is true about shampooing. It leaves a nasty foam residual on carpets. Stay away. Go with steam cleaning to avoid costly problems or just use hot water in your household machine. Will save you a lot of hassle.

I have a very good Bissell Pet carpet cleaner with upholstery attachments, I keep it clean, and after 5 years, it still cleans my carpet and furniture like the day it was bought. I pass over forward and back with the spray on, then go over again twice with just the suction, and my carpets are dry in about an hour. I use hot tap water and only the recommended amount of shampoo for my machine. I love the results! So clean, so fresh, and leaves my carpets smelling neutral with a slight hint of scent

I used to work at a store where we rented a popular brand of carpet cleaning machines. It's up to the employees of the store to make sure any machines rented out are returned clean and functional. I've worked with employees who didn't truly care to check the cleanliness of the machine before returning it. That said, at least once a month, the rental machine company would send a representative to clean and maintain all their machines. I trust they aren't disgusting cesspools of bacteria, but I strongly recommend doing what you can to check the machine before spending the money.

One correction to make. Those who use the steam cleaning/ hot water extraction method typically do use cleaning solutions. I know, I clean carpet for a living :) Most of the stuff in your carpet falls on the acid side of the PH scale. What we are doing when we spray a cleaning solution prior to the actual steam cleaning is trying to balance the PH level in your carpet in order to make the soil/dirt water soluble so that we can more easily extract it. What my business uses is gentle, has almost no odor and does not leave any residue behind. Hot water is rarely sufficient to get all the dirt out of your carpet.

when we replaced the carpets with laminate, t first I was upset because ' the floors seemed to be dirtier than before and seemed to be more of as magnet to dust and gunk. Then I realised that the only difference was that I was now seeing the stuff and this had always been there. A wake-up call that made me thrilled that we had chosen the option we did.

As an allergy/eczema sufferer, it's always much better to not have carpets. But I do like low-pile rugs. I do have a carpet shampooer and I use hot water and a little Oxiclean as it is one of the few cleaning products that can kill dust mites 👍👍👍

    • @TerryElisabeth
      @TerryElisabeth 6 років тому +4

Barbara K Hi Barbara! You know, I haven't done it in a while but I learned from Clean My Space that it's best to use as little product as possible in order to avoid attracting dirt sticking on the product residue. I go over the carpet with water first and then with product if it still needs brightening. I use as little product as possible ... maybe a tablespoon. I did use a drop of dish soap in the past but Oxiclean is enough. It's easier to rinse out as opposed to dish soap. I definitely follow up with lots of cycles of just water. The most effective part of the cleaning is how well the machine sucks up the water. I think I will eventually make a video as well 😊

@Melissa: I really enjoyed your video tutorial on carpet cleaning. However there is one important point you didn't hit on and that is using chemicals on carpet if you have a baby crawling on it or small animals that are closer to the floor. With a carpet cleaning machine you don't need to use the shampoo or cleaning chemicals the company recommends. Instead use a mixture of white distilled vinegar & water. Not only does this clean the carpet & remove odors but it's environmentally friendly, kid & pet safe. 🖒 Thank you for sharing.

Be very careful when hiring people to clean your carpets. My parents hired a reputable carpet cleaning service and evidently they didn’t clean their machine because my parents got carpet beetles. It was horrible because Mom and Dad saw them and they thought it was bed bugs which it wasn’t and spent thousands of dollars and a lot of man hours just to find it didn’t kill them. It wasn’t until they hired a third, yes I said a third, exterminator and he immediately recognized them, treated the carpet, BOOM problem solved for about 100.00. My Mother was beside herself when she thought she had bedbugs and drove herself crazy cleaning. It was a harsh lesson. Me I have hardwood floor!

Lived with only hardwood for 15 years. When I moved I put large area carpets in the bedroom and living room and am so glad I did. I vacuum daily but it is so worth the warm feet in the winter. And I don’t regret spending less time on my hands and knees cleaning hardwood-the white bloom and the streaking with a mop on hardwood drives me crazy-so much worse than vacuum lines that can be avoided with a carefully chosen carpet. Love carpet. Would never go back.

Great video. I only have larger area rugs, no wall to wall, on hard wood floors. I find that putting a plastic drop cloth between the rug and the carpet pad prevents spills, pet accidents, etc, from sinking into the pad and staining the wood floor. I also do not use foam padding as it breaks down into crumbling powdery bits. Use fiber padding if possible. Rug materials determine the cleaning method. Wool/silk rugs should be professionally cleaned. High temps can cause wool rug colors to run. Know your rugs.

The beetles hatched throughout her rugs and she had to have new rugs replaced throughout the whole house. She sued the store and the manufacturer.

Carpets are a nightmare times 2 for a wheelchair so the first thing I told my mom to do when we moved into a house is to throw them away .... we only have one left but that is because some genius glued it down.

I love oriental rugs. They are woven very tightly and have a short nap. They almost read like a solid surface. I prefer those beautiful rugs on a hardwood floor. I bought a Dyson stick after watching your videos; I LOVE it! So, I’m glad to know about the baking soda. Wall to wall carpeting, however, is NOT my cup of tea. NEVER in a bathroom!

I removed the carpet in my house. I thought it would be much easier to manage with our 6 cats. That still holds true, but we've got warped planks in a corner I missed that the cats were peeing in. (I know, I know. How do you miss that? A combination of never going into that corner and neglect. Honestly, no excuse.)

Vacuum the carpets with a spinning/rotating brush bar giving it a good deep clean then spray diluted zolflora on your carpet to kill germs and after that get a steam cleaner and steam the carpets 3 or 4 times a week and shampoo and rinse the carpets every 3 or 6 months even though you can't see any dirt, rinse the carpets 3 or 5 times after emptying the container and then once carpet is dried up you can steam it as a finish off then go wash your feet with soap and warm water then dry it... You're ready to go, I'm very good with hygiene, after cleaning your floors always wash your feet so you don't get the bacteria and dirt back on your floors...

Which is why I prefer hard wood floors. Carpets are nice in their own way, but I find taking care of wood easier. Less hassle with stains, etc.

I can not WAIT for the day I can afford to rip up the carpets and replace them with something easier to clean! But in the mean time, thanks so much for whatever information you can give. Oh and I love the baking soda trick. I think I don't want to call because I don't want to know that I am ruining my vacuum because it works so well.

Vinegar's a good cleaning agent for spills. U don't have to worry about whether or not u rinsed well enough, since it's not going to leave a sticky (dirt attracting) residue.

My carpets are gross!!! They are the originals in the condo and probably about 30 years old now. I need to replace them and not sure if I should switch to some other form of flooring. Hard decision, as I do like the carpet under my feet especially in the winter. I'm thinking, after this video, that maybe I should just put in vinyl flooring and put some rugs over that where I need them. Thanks for the good video!

I notice when I use baking soda on carpets, it clogs my filters in my Shark vacuum, leading to over heating and loss of suction. I have to wash my filters after using baking soda as it doesnt shake out of the sponges. So I can imagine that it would damage the machine after a while

We ripped out all of the carpet in our house! Replaced with cheap vinyl floor strips. They do not hold up very well but I will still take that over carpet any day! Some day I will replace it with a nicer hard-surface floor .

When I moved into my tiny flat (apartment) it had carpet in the bathroom...the very old, mouldy bathroom. The first thing I did was rip that damp ole' carpet out (along with the bathroom) - then kept on going until my house was completely carpet free. Love the idea for cleanliness and the look of a hardwood floor, but not so great for where I live, in Christchurch, New Zealand, where the winters are rather 'brisk'.

Our first home had carpet in the bathrooms. Wall to wall to base of toilet. Yeah, mull that one over. Our next house now has carpet everywhere except the kitchen and bathrooms, for now. I really do like them in bedrooms for the warmth, comfort and softness on usually naked feet, but at some point well likely remove it from all other areas.

I haven't fact checked this: Sealed filtration system hilighted in a video titled "Vacuum Wars" . Suggestion is that it is needed to prevent the vacuum from blowing particulates up into the air and any that cost less than $150 USD, even containing a cleanable HEPA filter, probably lack it.

Also - some quick advice - one issue with Dyson vacs is that they are not air-tight, i.e. there are leaks in the machine before air goes thru the filter upon exiting, this is the reason baking soda might get into the motor. You should invest in a Miele canister, or a similar, high-quality bag-vacuum. Miele's C2 or C3 canisters are 100% air-tight, and would have absolutely no problem picking up baking soda, or PM 2.5 (and even smaller) particles without kicking it back into the air or into the motor.

We’ve put hardwood floors in every room except the master bedroom and the master closet. The rooms with hardwood floors are a breeze to take care of. We use a Roomba on a daily basis and once a week hit the corners in other spots with our Dyson. I hate vacuuming the carpet it’s so gross. But, my wife wants warm floors when she gets up in the middle of the night. Slippers anyone?
Oh, I put tatami mats in my office. It smells awesome.

Try the new LifeGuard carpet from Shaw. It has a spill proof back that keeps things from passing though the backing to the pad. I just put it throughout my house and it is amazing. If you spill things on the floor, it sits on the top of the carpet until you can get them up. If you drop an ice cube on it, and fail to get it picked up, it can be a cold surprise when you step on it later. I bought it because of my pets.

Before kids. Not too bad. After kids. Disgusting and gross and I hate cleaning them because 5 seconds later someone else has made a mess 😂 I especially hate apartment carpets. Ours has been here at least 8 years. We knew people who knew the family that lived here before us and they didn't replace the carpet. I'm on board with hard floors now. Just gotta get some slippers lol

Many years ago we ripped up all our carpets and replaced them with hardwood flooring. In my daughter's room we had to scrape the underlay off because the previous owner kept pets that used the room as a toilet. We had noticed that after steam cleaning there was still a smell in that room but since it disappeared quickly we didn't worry about it. Needless to say I was horrified when we lifted it up and nearly gagged at the visible stains and odour. Now we only have a few rugs that I hose down every 6 months.

When renting a carpet cleaner check everything before signing the contract. Most say you have to return the product clean. So if it’s dirty at the time of renting. It is on them to clean it. Because it was their over site. Oh and then do clean the machine before returning.

An advise: use potato flour foor spilled water. Make like a mountain (don't worry it's cheap) on top of the spill untill you cannot see any water, the top layer has to be dry. Leave it for a few hours and vacuum it away.

I personally hate carpets because of dents and ripples. The furniture glides or leg cups always do that. I ask my apartment to get rid of carpet, they said carpet is actually reducing noise whenever we walk... so 1st floor people can sleep good. 😅
