i like when a product i [finally] like doesn't evolve or get improved or gets discontinued, which happens to me more frequently each year. I miss my Ford Probe.
This was delicious. Made some today and served with some ketchup (or sriracha) because the flavor reminds me so much of hashbrowns. At first they didnt hold together well so I made a second batch that were thinner and i let them cook longer on both sides and that did the trick.
my mom use to make these with left over mashed potatoes after we would have a roast. She would serve them the next day with pork chops :) Haven't had these since I was little. Will have to make these some time this week. Thanks Chef John for reminding me of the good food from when I was little!
Thanks for this! I love mashed potato pancakes - like you, after mashed potatoes for dinner came potato pancakes the next day. I'd tried a couple of times in the past to make them from instant but they were horrible....I'm looking forward to trying your version - they certainly look they way they should! Thanks for coming up with this, and sharing it with us.
A fun and easy recipe- thanks for the idea! I had Idahoan Instant Mashed Potatoes on hand, so I used that. I didn't need the extra salt with this brand and I also had to use a little more of the instant mashed potatoes than what the recipe called for, but it turned out great! I would definitely make them again :D
I tried this yesterday. I didn't use leftovers, tho. I bought instant mashed potatoes just to test. Tasty! :) In fact I added a large shredded potato to it, just to get some real potato in it. The next time I make home made mashed potatoes I will try to fry the left overs. I really like your videos! Thanks!!
One of my favorite memories from my childhood was having these with breakfast at my grandmother's house. She would add finely chopped onion to the potatoes before cooking and the heavenly smell would fill the house. I took things like this for granted back then. Today, I wish I could go back and shake some sense into that little brat.
I have a whole box of instant mashed potatoes i hate...and i dont want.them to go to waste...PERFECT...and i also have a box.of stuffing...going to do them this way. May i suggest topping with bacon chives and extra sharp cheddar???
its kind of like a hash brown and pancake its marvelous how come i didnt come up with that chef john is a innovative chef and we should thank him for this
Chef John I love the videos you do just using random stuff from your kitchen, you should make more! People are just so much more likely to make your awesome recipes if they already have all the stuff they need to make them. Like this, I'm definitely going to try this! Thanks!
This is the best timed recipe ever, because I made waaay too much mashed potatoes for dinner. Guess I don't have to think about what to have for lunch tomorrow!
I tried this recipe a week ago and it was great. The fat girl inside me made some tweaks this time: added 1/4 cup of buttermilk, sprinkles of mozzarella cheese and added a pinch of paprika. i LOVED it. i agree this is not healthy but every once in a while its okay. (: Thank you chef for the inspiration to create other dishes.
haha @tuntee I thought the same thing ... pleasantly surprised here. I keep a box or two on hand because I often use them as a thickener when I make stew but now I am going to give this a try sans sour cream for hubby. Maybe I'll make au gratin instead. Thanks Chef John.
I always use my instant mashed potatoes for thickening soups and stuff. It lets me make a creamy potato chowder without cream that tastes just as rich. :)
I love how you keep knockin instamash here and its like my goto mashed potato option. I just use a lot of little things like some cream/egg/mayo and plenty of seasonin to make the instamash more enjoyable. I personally like how homogenous instamash is compared to even the best made homemade mashed.
I've never had potato pancakes before, but these look quite delicious, so I may have to change that soon! I EVEN HAVE ALL THE INGREDIENTS! It's a first!
I haven't tried it yet, but I love the video. It looks like something delicious that I could do very easily. I really want to try things at home. On a related note. I've found sometimes real cooked spuds get a funny flavor or smell after refrigerating. Anyone have any tips on how to prevent this? I've noticed issues like that with chicken, but found making chicken salad prevents that.
@chef john, my fiance does that with our left over homeade potato salad. the potato salad we make has potatos, eggs, mayo, mustard, TONS of green onion and TONS of lime. it is amazing when fried up the next day like this as left overs. :)
I was absolutely delighted to find this recipe on my favorite cooking channel because I was looking for something different to do with boring, leftover mashed taters. 😘
I have always wanted to make potato pancakes, but I have no idea what to serve them with! Are they breakfast or dinner? I have never had them, assume they are for breakfast but really have no clue. What goes well with them?
Why didn't you make this back when I was still in college (just last semester no less) and living on instant mashed potatoes?! ... I so gotta make this.
Haha, I've never used instant mash, won't start now, but they look good :P I can only eat potato pancaked, no matter what kind they are (though I do prefer the Swedish kinds), with bacon and lingonberry jam... I think everyone should try it at least once ;) It's like meatballs with potatoes, cream sauce and lingonberry jam... A typical example of Swedish food, and absolutely delicious :D
nobody cares if they are perfect looking except perfectionists .. and nobody cares about them... Chef. John is the most quotable youtuber ever! dont you agree
@Tnat1on Yes you're right, cakes cookies, tarts, pies are absolutely healthy.....I actually really liked this....I think he posted it more as a tip than as a recipe...If you enjoyed it,cook it if you didn';t then don't...everything else isn't worth commenting...
@Nur8Nurani because butter has a very low smoke point and oil has a pretty high smoke point, which means if you just put butter it would burn easily but mixing it with oil, it doesn't. and oil has a has a pretty neutral flavour wheres butter is awesome... so basically you get the best of both ingredients, thats why.
I have made these before myself and I know this is going to sound gross, but these are GREAT with a little syrup on them. also, these is also good with ketchup, yes I said ketchup, on them. Great video Chef.
ill give these a try next time I make some food. I have a little pan that I use for making egg patties for sandwiches, and the recipe should fit half a batch in the pan. Maybe pop an egg patty between the two potato cakes and make a sandwich
@Tuntee Yeah, I was shocked at this as well. Even though he had it for an ingrediant in another recipe, its good to learn how to make something good from the "cheap stuff"
Very nice recipe. However, like all recipes you can add your own personal touches to modify them a bit. In ours we added truffle oil, which really added a fabulous depth of flavor which turned it from something good into something memorable. Also, a few mashed strawberries and bittersweet chocolate chips, along with two diced figs really set off that hint of truffle, as well as a couple of sardine heads (just the heads, don't wanna get too crazy), and two slices of meat lovers pizza which we blended until smooth in our powerful blender, but I suspect any blender will do. Pizza doesn't blend well on its own, some liquid is needed to get everything moving in the blender, so we added a half a mint milkshake we had left over from the weekend, as well as the meat from a half dozen buffalo wings, and the blue cheese dressing they came with. It was all a bit loose at this point so we folded in some whole wheat flour, mashed chick peas, and roasted lentils. Unfortunately we added too much of them and it became quite dry. But we found the perfect solution, tapioca pudding! We had a gallon of it which never got eaten during our Kwanzaa party a few months ago, so some of that went in as well. Pro Tip: any mold on the surface of pudding can simply be scraped off and the rest is still quite good, though it will smell a bit unappetizing. In the end we had potato pancakes which were so complex, and had such a wide and varied array of flavors, that our guests were speechless. We'll definitely be making these again. ...but absolutely will be adding some pheasant next time.
Indonesia have some dishes like this, but they are all deep fried! If it is round and filled with carrot and beef, we'd call it bitterballen. If it is longer, filled shredded chicken, and coated with breadcrumb, we call it kroket. If it is shaped like hockey puck, it is perkedel.
Just made them for the first time. I like them my dad he’s a picky eater said they’re not great but he ate the whole thing so 😂 I also added some pepper jack cheese to mine I think next time I make them I’ll put bacon
Most recipes rarely show the instant mash variety, just the normal potatoes. Now I know to use cold water instead of boiling to keep them more firm. Also guess you dont need breadcrumbs or flour either.
Check out the recipe: www.allrecipes.com/Recipe/220323/Instant-Potato-Pancakes/
I added some onion powder, smoked gouda, grated green apple and well cooked bacon chopped into bits. Amazing
If this recipe is 8 years old...I would like to see a 2019 version. It must have evolved over the years.

This is the only channel I make sure the video is set on highest quality!
my fave!! I personally love adding shredded onion, squash and zuchinni! Best side dish to meatloaf..
Minced mountain oysters really sets this dish apart.
I have really got to stop watching your channel when I'm hungry.....
Thanks for this! I love mashed potato pancakes - like you, after mashed potatoes for dinner came potato pancakes the next day. Chef John, you cease to amaze me on the things you make. Good Work!
*never cease
haha, I laughed when you said that no one cares about the perfectionsts. I love you natural humor
I have a whole box of instant mashed potatoes i hate...and i dont want.them to go to waste...PERFECT...and i also have a box.of stuffing...going to do them this way.

Thank you for all of your recipes, and humor!!❤️
i love how you added your personal favorite dishes
its kind of like a hash brown and pancake its marvelous how come i didnt come up with that chef john is a innovative chef and we should thank him for this
There is perfection in randomness. Odd shapes are perfect.
Thank you, Chef John, for the only instant potatoes pancake recipe that actually works! Just terrific.
I’m here from the recent baked brisket video
Chef John I love the videos you do just using random stuff from your kitchen, you should make more! People are just so much more likely to make your awesome recipes if they already have all the stuff they need to make them. Like this, I'm definitely going to try this! Thanks!
There are only two categories of potato pancakes..
Wonderful
Sublime
Thank you big bro...mine came out good...also mixed some minced onions in mine..

Thanks, I wanted something to do with instant mashed potatoes. This is great.
@Tuntee ive tried that onion ring recipe and it was awesome
haha @tuntee I thought the same thing ... pleasantly surprised here. I keep a box or two on hand because I often use them as a thickener when I make stew but now I am going to give this a try sans sour cream for hubby. Maybe I'll make au gratin instead.
Thanks Chef John.
can i use regular mashed potato instead?
My Mom used to make something like this, not with instant however. I loved to crack that top crust and put a big glob of butter in there, so good.
I've been trying to perfect an instant mashed potatoes pancake recipe so I'm glad I found this
I always use my instant mashed potatoes for thickening soups and stuff. It lets me make a creamy potato chowder without cream that tastes just as rich. :)
@Tuntee Maybe you saw the onion rings recipe?
dear lord........ this looks sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo goood.
This is like a home made Knish! Yummy!

Awesome idea have a box of instant & made some homemade mashed potatos yesturday, going to make this now!!!!!!!
Would love to see Chef John do a pantry based series, since so many are stuck at home and have a lockdown pantry to use up.
@chef john,
my fiance does that with our left over homeade potato salad. the potato salad we make has potatos, eggs, mayo, mustard, TONS of green onion and TONS of lime. it is amazing when fried up the next day like this as left overs. :)

Looks good, no reason we can't enjoy some instant potatoes every now and again.
Bomb! Thank you big hit at my house in no time at all.... You saved the day.
God, I love everything you make pretty much. Everything.
That looks good. (This college student is going to the bulk store for some instant mashed potato, now.)
Would you recommend these as a use for leftover mashed potatoes?
half the reason i watch your videos is because of your soothing sweet voice xD
I really need to stop watching these videos at 2am, it makes me too hungry for how late it is.
It is time. I finally have left over mashed potatoes. Thank you Chef John.
Thank you! Now I know what to do with the rest of the box in my cabinate. I am so making these!
man youre vid are truly inspiring me to make food
I have always wanted to make potato pancakes, but I have no idea what to serve them with! Are they breakfast or dinner? I have never had them, assume they are for breakfast but really have no clue. What goes well with them?
Yummy, and I love how you also just wanted to touch everyone elses potato pancake LOL
I tried these but i didn't have cayenne, so used chili instead and they were fantastic. Thanks Chef John :0)
@LanceLawliet92 That's just one of the reasons.
Why didn't you make this back when I was still in college (just last semester no less) and living on instant mashed potatoes?! ... I so gotta make this.

Wouldn't using a chive seasoned instant potato work for chive flavoring?
nobody cares if they are perfect looking except perfectionists .. and nobody cares about them...
Chef. John is the most quotable youtuber ever! dont you agree
@moirasa Are you implying that you use ketchup and apple sauce or is it on or the other? =P

@Tnat1on Yes you're right, cakes cookies, tarts, pies are absolutely healthy.....I actually really liked this....I think he posted it more as a tip than as a recipe...If you enjoyed it,cook it if you didn';t then don't...everything else isn't worth commenting...
sounds good
Wow, that looks good! I think I'll just improvise with fresh mashed potatoes. I'd never have instant in my cupboards. lol. ;)
I love everything u make chef john :)
Love them

YAY!! I JUST MADE THIS!! TUT So cool!!~!
with left over mashed potatoes do you still need to add the egg?
ill give these a try next time I make some food. I have a little pan that I use for making egg patties for sandwiches, and the recipe should fit half a batch in the pan. Maybe pop an egg patty between the two potato cakes and make a sandwich

you just made me really hungry...jack. wait...that's instant pancakes. never mind.
can i make this with regular mashed potatoes?
I made these for dinner tonight! Mine don't look quite like yours though, lol.
hahaha no body cares about perfectionist :) your a winner Mr. Chef
GENIUS
OMG that looks amazing!
Indonesia have some dishes like this, but they are all deep fried!

Hmm I think I'm going to try this but I wonder if it'd be possible to stuff them with some cheddar cheese...
@berukblue He uses oil because it doesn't burn as easily, so he can get a better crust. The butter is just for flavor.
Just made them for the first time. I like them my dad he’s a picky eater said they’re not great but he ate the whole thing so 😂 I also added some pepper jack cheese to mine I think next time I make them I’ll put bacon
Blanched quail meat really made our attempt at this recipe shine. We also added a crumbled up Snickers bar and some raw leeks. It was divine.
Most recipes rarely show the instant mash variety, just the normal potatoes. Now I know to use cold water instead of boiling to keep them more firm.
Also guess you dont need breadcrumbs or flour either.
Tried this - they were great. Thanks so much for sharing. ~Jeri
