An earlier M.R. James adaptation from BBC radio, this one from the late 1950s...
MYSTERIOUS MAGPIE is a channel devoted to ghost and horror stories on British radio, and to dark tales of every kind. I have another channel, MYSTICAL MAGPIE, which is all about stories of fantasy, mythology, and adventure: / @mysticalmagpie-wo5fn

This channel has become my favorite. A really entertaining version of the story and one that I have not heard before. Thank you for sharing all of these wonderful radio dramas.
Great find. Many thanks for sharing 👍 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it. The same team (writers Michael & Molly Hardwicke and producer Charles LeFeaux) produced several other spooky plays, including M.R. James's Martin's Close and Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You, which are both on the channel already. 'Whistle' is fascinating because it stars Michael Hordern, a few years before he gave a totally different performance as the same character in Jonathan Miller's TV version of the story...
What a marvellous radio version of this story..I love M R James and
any adaptations are a welcome treat.Thank you for such amazing work in bringing these gems back into the light...or better still the dark....
I just curate this stuff, but thank you! I thought it would be nice to have it all in one place, you see...
First broadcast on the BBC Light Programme on 28 April 1959.
This is stupendous. Need more M R James adaptations pls
The channel has a whole playlist of James, including versions of "Oh Whistle..." and "Martin's Close" from the people who made this one...
