Mysterious Magpie

Mysterious Magpie is a collection of radio programmes on a dark and atmospheric theme. There are lots and lots of ghost stories, but also tales of murder and mystery and horror, dark psychological thrillers and ominous costume dramas...
The Price of Fear The Speciality of the House, starring Vincent Price
Support me on Ko-Fi: ko-fi.com/mysteriousmagpie
Before The Man in Black returned in the 1980s his role was filled in urbane fashion by Vincent Price for a horror anthology series entitled The Price of Fear. The slightly tongue in cheek concept had us believe that each macabre tale had happened to one of Price's friends or acquaintances - improbable, but it allowed Price to be an active participant each week, rather than just a narrator.
This series wasn't Price's only work on BBC radio - he also starred in a full-length play, Night of the Wolf (also uploaded to this channel) and co-starred with Peter Cushing in the science fiction thriller Aliens in the Mind.
MYSTERIOUS MAGPIE is a channel devoted to ghost and horror stories on British radio, and to dark tales of every kind.
I have another channel, MYSTICAL MAGPIE, which is all about stories of fantasy, mythology, and adventure: www.youtube.com/@MysticalMagpie-wo5fn

Support me on Ko-Fi: ko-fi.com/mysteriousmagpie Though primarily concerned with supernatural stories, this channel does often dip into the genres of crime and thrillers, particularly if a story is especially dark in tone. Support me on Ko-Fi: ko-fi.com/mysteriousmagpie There are two dramatisations of Jane Eyre on the channel already, but here's an old reading that I used to have on double-cassette. It's very much a reading and some may find the tone of the performances somewhat declarative, but the voices in question belong to Clare Bloom and Anthony Quayle, so I think that's reason enough to forgive that. The Rivals: The Murders In The Rue Morgue
I'm reading Faust in school right now and this is AMAZING, I'm going to show my teacher this (if I remember).
It's not a ghost story. Just bad science fiction. 😢
I think it was just yesterday I was listening to your other upload of this story....and I remarked there are so many good versions of this....this has different characteristics, but both are good.
🤔
Cylindrical shape, with an opening end and hollow. 🤔 Pringles have taken this advertisement way too far! 😧
Excellent play. Most enjoyable!
Wow! What a story!
Fantastic acting, but wish I hadn't listened at bedtime 😂
Love these audio drama's,, thanks for putting these up,😊
I'm enjoying these stories so much that I'm actually losing sleep but make up for it during the day. It's not just the stories but the voices and lack of loud sound effects that make them so pleasant. Thank you.
Didn't expect that creepy ending. 😅👏👏
I've listened to this for two nights dropping off. Wonderful stories and brilliant narration🤗
SPOILERS: its puce
Really enjoyed this, thanks so much.
You'd likely enjoy the 2013 adaptation of 'Double Indemnity', also by James M. Cain, which is on the channel too.
@mysteriousmagpie have enjoyed that too, thanks x
Superb adaptation, top work, cheers 👍
Perfect ghost story 😊
A tell-tale heart story. Short, but directly to point. A father figure marrying a child, should expect a child. 🐒🐣🙈🙉🙊 However, a sophisticated partnership with similar tastes, values, & class will weather a lifetime of social storms with elegance & style. Elegance & style is rarely pulled from “the ready” of simple child’s bag of qualities. One’s lifetime of experience is not changed by someone else’s good will, that often just ends with regrets by both parties.
Thank you for introducing me to Dorothy K Haynes - I’m hooked!
She's been neglected for a while but happily a whole volume of her short stories was reprinted in the UK just last October - "The Weird Tales of Dorothy K. Haynes", from The British Library.
@ I got the book on Kindle, thanks to you, and it contained so many memorable horrifying takes! I’m still looking for “The Peculiar Case of Mrs Grimmod” and “The Cure” - they are apparently in some out of print horror anthology but the search is still on.
Really enjoyed this!Thankyou x
I love this story. Good and scary.
The same author, Robert Forrest, also wrote a version of Dr Jekyll & Hyde which is an interesting companion to this one - the whole thing with the voices of dead characters being demonically revived appears there too - that's the 1993 version of Jekyll & Hyde which I've got on this channel too...
❤️❤️❤️🙂
Great story!
thank hell for this! i ordered my copy and it came with the first 36 pages missing😭😭
These short stories are BRILLIANTLY UNIQUE. Such deep shadows of one’s soul peaking through in each story. So well written. Excellence. How nice to have ancient word forms recalculated into unique stories with such stirring of the audience’s imagination. Thank you! 🪭🎉🎁🪄🪅🎊
This story has been used a lot for some great interpretations. Thank you.
I am now convinced, that Susan Hill is grossly unaware of the actual/literal meaning of the word "revenge". Both in The Woman in Black and in this one, how is it revenge when you're targeting irrelevant people? -"She had her revenge", my ass.
That Christmas story with the carollers is very spooky, more questions than answers.
Great story, golden oldies 😊
This is probably one of best audio drama`s ever produced Charlie Dickens had a few more strings to his bow than I first thought very enjoyable thank you for bringing this to my attention ❤
Yes, it's one of my all-time favourites and made me a fan of Anton Lesser because of his performance as Tulkinghorn. Most Dickens adaptations keep the narrative voice but by dropping it here they manage to intensify the story and make it feel almost Noir-like. The same people used the same 'recording on location' approach to sound design when they made an adaptation of Thomas Harris's 'Fatherland'. That's also on the channel - and also stars Anton Lesser, as it happens.
Great Channel!!
Yes, it is the best audio drama of The Midwich Cuckoos. I’m a huge fan of John Wyndham’s work, and have a collection of somewhat ratty paperback books encompassing everything he wrote under his name ( & most of those published under his pseudonym). It’s one of my treasures, that little collection. Mostly bought for me by my grown up son. Little perfect gifts. This broadcast, with the really thrilling adaptation of the novel- so true to the feeling of the original work and the delightful Bill Nigh as Richard is superb. Enjoy❤
Glad you enjoyed it; I've got a lot of Wyndham on the channel... actually your own story reminded me of a very good friend of mine who was a huge JW fan - but she lived on a different continent and could only get the major titles. I ended up tracking down those odd collections you mention, of his 'pseudonymous' works. I even bought her Plan For Chaos when it first came out - though originally it was only available as some obscure academic edition. If I'd know Penguin were going to publish it, I would have waited...
Is this the whole book?
The guy who announced the episode goofed. It couldn't be 1967 because the baby was born in June of 1966. The 6th month in year 1966. 666.
Ira Levin's novel was published in March 1967 - though perhaps you're thinking of The Omen, where Damien is definitely born in '66...
THIS is horror! Thank you for this episode.
Excellent all around.
Enjoyed it very much!! Thank you!
Glad you liked it. Series 2 is also up on the channel, you'll probably enjoy that too...
@ Sweet!! 🥳
A new twist on a well loved tale.
I like her writing but I don't recall hearing this one before. Thanks very much.
I hadn’t heard any of these stories before and enjoyed all of them - thank you!
Glad you like them; in fact, after the first two series of these stories had been broadcast on the radio, Connolly kept writing them - there are now three volumes of these ghost/supernatural stories, published as 'Nocturnes', 'Night Music', and 'Night and Day'. All of the stories in the two videos I've uploaded here can be found in that first volume.
Yay!
I work with a bloke called John Connolly. He's a total arse! 😂
Same bloke or different.
Connolly wrote some of the best horror, like Stephen King after him he used that wry bit of humor just lightly sprinkled in.
Fyi: “prior to”, “before” Connolly, King used humor in his horror would be historically correct as King’s writing began several decades prior to Connolly’s body of work. 😊 📝🖍️🪭
Truly a great compilation of chilling stories! Thank you!❤
number 13 likes LOL
The suspense on this one was fantastically built up, really good listen. Thanks as always for uploading
Who is the narrator? Deserves to be named💢
I quite agree - and Tony Doyle's name is on the screen for almost the whole duration of the video, and in the second paragraph of the video description, for that reason. Sadly he passed away relatively soon after recording these 25 years ago, but they remain as one of many testaments to his work as an actor.
Really appreciate your daily uploads. And such great stories. Thanks!
Lots of Brits and Scots in Japan? 🤣🤣 where are the local? Haha
I know it's a little incongruous (I certainly noticed it the first time round), but if you think about it, it's no stranger than having English accents in The Three Musketeers. I suspect that having the entire cast put on bad Japanese accents would have sounded weird or silly if they'd gone that route.
Great atmosphere. Love this. Great for later winter nights. And I am always enthralled with anything out of Japan.
Sadly, this twisted tale did not hold my attention.
